Shin sat alone at the fire. The bandits she’d made good company with went to sleep hours ago. Shin stayed, intently watching the darkness over Peridea.

“Little one? I’m not here to harm you.”

She drew her saber off her belt, turning it over in her hand.

“This is a padawan braid. It’s an old Jedi tradition used to show one’s rank.”

She gripped the hilt tightly, rubbing her thumb over the iron.

“They hurt you.”

“Is that why…”

“Don’t look, Shin. We need to fix you up.”

She ignited her saber, closely watching the orange glow in front of her and how it illuminated the dead grass.

“As long as you’re safe.”

She pulled at the braid over her right shoulder, passing and twirling it between her fingers.

“Will you ever leave?”

“Shin-“

“Will you?”

“Absolutely not. It’s never once crossed my mind.”

She pulled her loose hair out of the way and brought her saber up, cutting the braid off as high as she could.

“One parting lesson, Shin…”

He left her—no connection to her any longer.

She’d leave her last connection to him behind, too.

Just a Friendly Reminder for those who don’t interact with nature often (and those who do but might need the reminder)

Most people tend to live in a world of luxuries and comforts very separate from the wilderness and with modern technology it gets downplayed as less dangerous. But it takes 2 seconds for a “quick run up the ridge line” to because a six day SAR run. I’ve seen it with tourists in my area, I’ve seen it abroad, I’ve heard scathing comment about being ‘over prepared’ when the subject was basic preparedness for a 10 mile hike.

The weather is going to get warm soon, people are going to go out and that’s good! Go to your local parks, the wilderness centers, take a hike! But do it with respect and don’t get cocky because Mother Nature will slap you down, chew you up, and you will be lucky if she spits your bones out somewhere that humanity will find you.

another thing that’s really shitty about the recent uptick of people who call themselves allies still refusing to stop using “dude” and similar for trans women is that i thought we all agreed ages ago that we shouldn’t call people things they don’t want to be called even if it IS something you’d consider inoffensive to call a person under most circumstances. like seriously how hard is it to respond to “please don’t call me that” with “sorry, i won’t do it again” even and ESPECIALLY if you didn’t mean any harm when you first said it. if it’s a habit that’s hard to break just try your best and take a moment to apologize briefly when you fuck up, exactly like we’re always telling cis people to do with pronouns they’re not used to using. it’s really not that hard

#like i’m in circles where it’s common to use in a gender neutral way too but if you know someone is likely to be uncomfortable with it then #just say something else! for fucks sake. we all know a lot of trans women are uncomfortable w it bc they said so repeatedly #so just save it for people who are not trans women and/or trans women who told you they’re ok with it #similarly when i was growing up ‘young man’/‘young lady’ was considered a term of respect and/or formality for children. #like the children’s equivalent of calling an adult ‘sir’ or ‘ma’am’ #but these days it’s often used as a racist micro aggression so EVERYONE NEEDS TO TRY TO STOP WITH IT.
