Phantom of the Opera feels like this really dramatic story until you break it down to the bare essentials. We have a ballerina who upstages the lead singer, a French nobleman who knew the ballerina years ago and is in love with her, two dudes who bought the opera despite warnings of it being haunted and who are SO unprepared for this and really just want to sit back and make money, the dramatic lead singer and her equally dramatic partner who just follows her around to make her look better, a mysterious ballet teacher who knows way too much about the opera ghost and is here to remind everyone they’re in mortal peril, and her daughter. These bumbling theater kids are all dealing with a supposed Opera Ghost, who is actually just a totally mortal man with a facial disfigurement hiding up in the rafters, killing people, demanding money, and confusing the poor ballerina by giving her voice lessons, using her grief for her late father, and also being in love with her.

Tl:dr - phantom of the opera is about a bunch of theater kids trying to catch a traumatized man hiding in the vents of the opera house

CHAPTER 1: Prologue.

Summary: In which Raoul de Chagny, the Victome and noble man, meets a young lady working at the opera house while looking for his childhood friend, Unbeknownst to her affiliation to the renowed Opera Ghost.

CHAPTER 2: The Phantom's Misery/A Girl's Solitude

Chapter Summary: As the young woman journeyed her way towards The Phantom's lair, she couldn't help but dwell on her loneliness and her friendship with The Phantom.

CHAPTER 3: Christine! Christine!

Summary: The Opera Populaire was growing more and more chaotic, Carlotta's screeching could be heard even from the below, where the Phantom resided, Madame Giry's booming voice and words that singed like that of a snake's bite shaking the young ballet girls and making some even quit, The older Chagny trying to ease everyone and the managers having given up from trying to calm the chaos. But it all grew quiet when they saw the supposedly missing Daae girl in the flesh, just below the stage, and near the audiences seat from where the chaos was happening.

CHAPTER 4: Second Sightings.

Chapter Summary: Ah yes, Christine Daae! The young beauty was the talk of the town, ever since she had her debut in Hannibal the audience was entranced by the young lady's beauty. However, some wondered why she only appeared in that one play. Some were delighted to see somebody lead the stage aside from the primadonna Carlotta, some were curious as to why the opera hid such a talent, and some with controversial opinions, one of which where they stated that the young soprano was better than the experienced primadonna.

CHAPTER 5: Sweet Melody Of The Night.

Chapter Summary: The Phantom visited her once again in her dreams. His songs that usually lulled her to sleep now wakes her violently.

CHAPTER 6: A Chance Encounter.

chapter summary; True to her word, [Name] made an effort to see Christine Daae whenever she had time, well- whenever Erik would order her to do so. But the difference was that [Name] was no longer a spectator of Christine's life but rather apart of it.

melanie gowie will be the alternate madame giry for '23/24! i've heard of the christine to giry and christine to carlotta pipelines, but have any other actresses gone from carlotta to giry?

My first thought when she announced it is that I will be somewhat surprised if she doesn't do an emergency cover of Carlotta at one point... She's an excellent Carlotta. But equally, I'm sure she'll be a good Madame Giry! Can't wait to see and hear more.

There's been several actresses covering the role of Carlotta and Madame Giry in the past, either as understudies, principals, or a mix. At the top of my head (and not a conclusive list by any means):

Marilyn Caskey: Principal Carlotta on Broadway 1989-1992, principal Madame Giry on Broadway 2001-2007, and again in 2011. I also wanna say she filled in as principal Carlotta in the US Tour at some point... 1996-ish?

Rebecca Spencer: Principal Carlotta in Hamburg 1991, principal Madame Giry in Las Vegas 2006-2008, principal Madame Giry in the World Tour in 2012-2013.

Kimilee Bryant: Principal Carlotta in the US Tour 2008, u/s Madame Giry and Carlotta both in the US Tour and on Broadway. She furthermore was principal, alternate and u/s Christine in multiple runs in Basel, Toronto, US Tour and Broadway.

Robin Botha: Principal Christine in South Africa in 2011-2012, u/s Carlotta in the World Tour 2019-2020, and also (I think) emergency covering the role of Madame Giry in the World Tour 2019.

Kris Koop: u/s Christine, Carlotta and Madame Giry on Broadway (and the first to cover all three roles there)

Rebecca Eichenberger: Principal Carlotta on Broadway 2001-2003, and principal Madame Giry on Broadway in 2016. She's also been in the ensemble, understudying various roles.

The intersections are very important, because, for example, Meg and Raoul are both not actually dumb, but also, yes they are. Especially Raoul where Christine is concerned

Phantom and Madame Giry are the only really smart people in this whole opera it’s insane

Christine does have a functioning number of brain cells, but her grief around her father and genuine reasons do bring her down a little in how people perceive her. Basically she cries too much for everyone to realize she’s smart

Andre and Firmin are on opposite ends and that’s the only way they can survive the opera
