Infinity of Now The Heliocentrics 2020, Madlib Invazion (Bandcamp)

Music increasingly eats its own tail—I read a review that (correctly) notes how the Heliocentrics’ sound feels like the raw material for RZA beats, only this stuff has already been run through a RZA filter, pre-darkened and pre-chopped for ya. A jazzed up Portishead was the act that I first thought of, for the brooding grooves, cinematic dust, and singer Barbara Patkova’s nightshift chanteuse vocal stylings. Whatever comparison you personally choose to assign to them, the pleasures of the Heliocentrics are in how they fuse (rather than synthesize) a bunch of cool influences (some Afrobeat here, some Beat Konducta there) into throbbing, protean jams. It’s music I could imagine being played by some hideous, sunglasses-wearing ifrit with too many limbs in a jazz club in hell.

I snagged Infinity of Now on a clerk’s recommendation, and haven’t listened to anything else by the band, so I can’t speak to how it stacks up to the rest of their catalogue. On its own merits it is a supremely vibey piece of work that seldom loses the listener despite wandering down many garden paths. Even for extraordinarily gifted players, as these guys are, that’s no small accomplishment: it’s easy for self-consciously retro-cool stuff like this to start wafting top notes of premium light beer commercial electroswing. I think I’m most partial to “Venom,” a bass-led creep that keeps teasing a complete loss of structural integrity before it manages (just) to not.

The Madlib Invazion Music Library Series was created by Madlib and Egon over the course of the Pandemic, and was a chance to give their creative friends the ability to stretch out and indulge in whatever type of music they wanted for release on the label. The music had to be great and able to be presented as a stand alone album – like the best “Music Library” releases of the past, on labels like Italy’s Sermi, Germany’s Bruton, France’s MP2000 and the UK’s DeWolfe. And, like those albums, it had to work as easy, one-stop clearance for background cues in film and television production and, as producers have been indulging since the 1990s, for sampling. The series contains 12 releases by DJ Muggs, Karriem Riggins, J-Zone, the Heliocentrics’ Malcolm Catto and Jake Ferguson, JJ Whitefield of Karl Hector/Whitefield Brothers/Poets of Rhythm, Motif Alumni and Music Research Library, Mario Luciano of Polyphonic Music Library, Henkel, Gabriel Rowland of Los Yesterdays, Dan Hastie and Terin Ector of Orgone, Dan Ubick and Joe Harrison The albums will be released on the Madlib Invazion Bandcamp on the first Friday of each month over the course of one year. It’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since Freddie Gibbs was at a low point in his career, in between labels and surfing couches, and Madlib was a skinny, stoned, sampling beatmaker, trying to forge his way with his own Madlib Invazion imprint as he divested from the label his music built, Stones Throw.

Pinata, their sprawling collaboration, changed the courses of these two musical mavericks. Now, on the 10th anniversary of its launch, artist Jeff Jank returns to his iconic cover with faux-Zebra hide, and Madlib Invazion presents the single LP, half speed-lacquered version of this hip-hop classic.

The Madlib Invazion Library Releases Karriem Riggins's To The Jungle

Karriem Riggins releases his To The Jungle album via The Madlib Invazion Music Library founded by Madlib and Egon during the pandemic. Riggins works out various rhythm patterns with a collection of songs that will entertain beat junkies and provide source material for producers. The drummer also released "Massamba Afundance" with Madlib from their forthcoming joint album YHWH is LOVE. Their newest collaboration will be the first release on Riggins's Law Of Rhythm label he co-founded with Jae Barber. YHWH is Love comes out on March 1st.

“Prolific is an understatement when it comes to the world of Madlib. Diving in head first, people might know him from his most recent work with Freddie Gibbs. Or they might have heard about his acid tinged alter-ego, Quasimoto, in a dorm room or coffee shop (ahem, imagine you weren’t born post 2000).

Going further back, a lot first learned of ‘The Beatkonducta’ with the legendary Hip Hop trio, Lootpack. Regardless of where you learned of him or how you came across any of the ever growing catalog of creations, it is a safe bet there is almost ALWAYS going to be something you never knew was another ‘Madlib Invazion’.

That said, over the last few years I’ve happily dug around for the often overlooked, or dare I say, forgotten (dude is P-R-O-L-I-F-I-C, no diss) Jazz catalog Madlib has managed to pump out. ‘Rugged Tranquility’ is my attempt at finding some of the deeper cuts in the abyss, all the while celebrating 20 years of Otis Jackson Jr’s Jazz masterpieces.” - PK

Gli album degli Heliocentrics attingono in egual modo dall’universo funk di James Brown, dalla disorientante asimmetria di Sun Ra, dalla portata cinematografica di Ennio Morricone, dalla fusione sublime di David Axelrod, dalla musique concrète accesa di Pierre Henry e dal ritmico Krautrock di Can.

A prescindere della label con cui hanno pubblicato la loro musica – il sound degli Heliocentrics è un nuovo tipo di psichedelia, che poteva venire solo da una band di musicisti affermati che sono anche fan ossessivi della musica dai gusti davvero eclettici.

Piñata Freddie Gibbs & Madlib 2014, Madlib Invazion

As of 2023, Freddie Gibbs & Madlib’s Piñata sits at #18 on RateYourMusic.com’s user-generated all-time hip-hop chart, and #113 for all albums. RYM, for the unfamiliar, is sort of an IMDb for music, and if its rankings aren’t as aggressively gauche as IMDb’s (I just looked at their top 250 films for the first time in years and guffawed), they’re still pretty slanted towards the tastes of the mostly white collegiate dudes and divorce dads who feel compelled to, well, rate their music. Though I wouldn’t accuse either Gibbs or ‘lib of trying to curry the white vote or anything, Piñata is perfectly calibrated to pleasure the sort of guy whose hip-hop canon is rooted in AllMusic Picks—and speaking as one of them, allow me to say it’s pretty good for that! But at the same time, there is a consistency to both beat and rhyme that makes it kind of like elite-tier background music, stuff that sounds great when it’s on that I nonetheless have difficulty paying deep attention to.

Madlib, like his friend Dilla, has always been sort of the avant-garde within the traditional. No matter how out there he gets, the beats he makes are still very clearly rooted in ‘90s boom-bap, and the tracks that Gibbs selected for Piñata are among the most conventional ‘lib’s ever done. When you throw the record on, you’re hit with pure soul-sampling nostalgia from the moment the needle drops, and there isn’t really a beat where the energy slacks or loses the groove. The mostly hook-free tracks do that classically Madlib thing (a la his Beat Konducta tapes and Madvillainy) of blending one into the next like you’re listening to a DJ set. As a result, you might have trouble remembering which songs stood out unless they’ve got a particularly memorable guest appearance or sample (a la “Higher” and “Harold’s”).

I have it on good authority that Freddie Gibbs says a lot of very cool shit on this record, but if you searched me for quotes, you’d just find three lighters, a dry pen, two metro cards and some illegible receipts. At no point does he sound like anything less than a stud on the mic, and his flow is faultless. But he has a way of munching his way through his bars with such metronomic efficiency my attention is lulled. Even on the more off-kilter beats like “Bomb,” he just calmly assesses the challenge ahead, nods to himself, and then attacks it with his usual casual, high PER athleticism. I was surprised to find myself perking up when a jabroni like Domo Genesis showed up, but honestly the occasional cameos from rappers both great (Raekwon and Danny Brown) and corny (Mac Miller and Ab-Soul, who uncharacteristically kills it on “Lakers”) inject life where Freddie’s shark-eyed flow just stacks bodies.

This review sounds a lot more negative than I really feel about this record (I bought it! I don’t plan on selling it!), but in the face of the intensity of praise this one has garnered in some quarters, I can’t help but compare it to the records that really seeded my love for rap. Despite its masterly technique, this lacks the flair and personality I’d need to put it on that classic level. (Freddie and Madlib are absolutely crushed, I’m sure.)
