500 Follower Celebration
Word Count: 728 words
Warnings: A touch of spice
A/N: Thank you so much @forever-a-night-owl ! I'm not sure how well I delivered on the fluff, but I had so much fun with this!

“This is so unfair,” you groan, following your commanding officer along the dimly lit corridor of the budget hotel’s seventh floor. “It’s like having to sit next to the teacher on a school trip.”
“Would you give it a goddamn rest,” Rick grunts, dragging both his luggage and yours across the ugly worn carpet. “This ain’t exactly what I imagined, either. But it’s just for one night. ‘Sides, would you rather be back in your cell?”
Harley’s shrill cackle fills the air. “Ya know sweetie, you could always smother him in his sleep. We promise not to tell.”
The rest of the squad trails behind you, similarly bickering about the sleeping arrangements for the night and debating who has drawn the shortest straw. As if ARGUS was really going to pay out for you all to enjoy individual rooms. Rick had already reminded you to be grateful to have a hotel room at all. In this line of work, you are rarely afforded such luxuries.
“Don’t tempt me, Harls." You smirk over your shoulder at the blonde villain. "Sure you don't wanna swap? Think I'd rather share a room with Boomer.”
Harley snorts. "No chance. Flag's such a drag. You'll be tucked up in bed and lights out at nine."
“This is us.” Ignoring Harley’s thinly veiled insult, Rick stops abruptly in front of Room 77 and reaches into his pocket. "The rest of your rooms are straight ahead. For the love of god, try not to break anythin'. We ship out at 0500 hours."
Leaning against the wall while Rick fumbles with the key, you fold your arms and shoot Harley a resigned grimace. "Have fun. Know I sure won't."
Harley offers you a sympathetic pat on the shoulder before sashaying away with Boomer and the others in tow.
Exhaling a long breath as your teammates disappear along the hallway, you turn your attention to Rick. He’s still having trouble with the door. “Give it here.” You snatch the key from his broad hands and jam it into the lock. A couple of twists and a well-placed shove with your shoulder has the door flying open. “Magic.” You flash him a grin and stride inside.
Like the rest of the building, the room is small and dated. A solitary queen-sized bed takes up most of the space. “Cosy,” you remark, flopping down onto the bed. A large brown watermark stains the corner of the ceiling; pretending not to notice, you close your eyes.
The door slams shut in Rick’s wake and a moment later you hear him drop the bags. “Think they bought it?” you wonder, cracking open one eye just in time to find him approaching the bed.
Rick’s tall figure looms above you, his customary frown melting into a soft smile before he sits down beside you. The bed sinks beneath his weight. “Oh, they bought it alright. You’re a pretty convincin’ actress.”
“I didn’t hurt your feelings, did I?” You reach out and squeeze his thick muscled thigh. “I was only joking about Boomer. I hear he snores worse than you do.”
“Careful, darlin’.” In the blink of an eye Rick shifts position so that his huge body is hovering over you, biceps straining under the tight black t-shirt as he cages you against the bed. That muscled thigh is now wedged firmly between your legs. “It’s not too late for me to assign you to a room with Blackguard.”
Biting your lip, you temper down the urge to laugh. This wouldn't be the first time you’d called his bluff. “We both know that’s not gonna happen.”
Rick’s expression darkens, sending a familiar rush of heat straight to your core. “You’re right. I’m keepin’ you all to myself tonight.” He leans down further, until his lips brush your own, just the ghost of a kiss.
“Guess Harley was right when she said it would be lights out at nine,” you muse.
“Oh no, darlin’. The lights are stayin’ on. I wanna see all of you.”
It’s all you need to hear. Grabbing Rick by the collar of his shirt, you tug him down until you feel the delicious pressure of his hips against yours.
Rick’s lips trail a path along your jaw, before he whispers into the shell of your ear. “Know you’re gonna have to be quiet, right?”
“I can be quiet, Flag. The question is, can you?”

(the watermark for the thranduil photo is still on there - this pic was found on pinterest and i was unable to find a link to the artist)
<><><>
Thranduil was drunk. That much was clear. The king loved his wine, that was for certain. And there were many nights where you knew he had drunk his fill. But tonight was something else entirely. You did not think it possible to imbibe as many goblets as he had and the fact he was still standing astounded you. He was full in his celebration of the New Year.
He was looser, his laughter hearty. It was a thing to behold – him sounding genuine in his laughter. You were unsure if you should feel touched by the sight of the generally tepid king so jovial or if you should keep your distance. Not that you could wander far, especially with the guard. He spoke of past parties’ memories with his court, warm memories, and you listened.
Thranduil merely guffawed when one of the court wandered off and it was reported back that they had drank themselves sick. Apparently that happened to at least one of the court at celebrations such as this.
Legolas was relaxed, leg swung over his chair, and loosely holding his goblet as he drank. He had not said one bordering on rude comment or sent an unkind glance your way throughout the night. There was no way you would let your guard down around him though; you kept your drinking to a place where you were warm, but the world was not a blur.
The celebration dragged on into the night and the food never seemed to disappear – the servants kept watchful eyes to make sure plates were full. The candles burned bright still, the music swelling and dipping. Some elves had pulled down ropes of the snowdrop and daffodil garlands to weave individual crowns. They danced, although now it seemed harder to keep their footing, but the mood was high.
Despite the energy still thrumming, your eyelids were beginning to become heavy. Thranduil found his seat beside you again and you opened your mouth to speak but he was not paying attention. His glass was empty and before he had a chance to beckon a servant, your hand came to rest on his arm that he had raised. It stalled his movement and his head turned to you. The intoxication was swimming in his eyes.
Leaning towards him, you told him quietly, “This celebration has been grand, and I’ve been pleased to partake. A beautiful party for your people. But I am finding myself fading from the excitement and would like to retire.”
Thranduil’s hand moved to come to brush at your cheek. His tongue peeked between his lips as his eyes trailed over your face before coming to meet your gaze. A smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth and something lit in his expression.
It was then you had a sinking feeling it would still be awhile before you chased sleep.
Standing once more, he turned – a small stumble as he faced you – before holding out his hand to you.
“You’re quite right. The party has been splendid – one of the best. But it is growing late and I do not wish to see you fall asleep in your chair. You should be comfortable. Come.”
Thranduil bid his crowd to continue their jubilee in his absence before leading you away. A gaggle of guards fell in line behind the pair of you to escort you to his chambers.
A hand skirted across your bare shoulders. Twirled up into your hair and skirted down your neck. He was not keeping his hands to himself as you made your way through the halls. Soon his fingers were pulling at your bodice strings, and you tried to walk quicker to get to the stairs leading up to his chambers. He was impatient and you did not want him to continue trying to undo your gown before you were in the privacy of his room. In his state, he seemed to have lost care for propriety.
You did not make it up five steps before he was on you. His movement was swift and pointed much to your shock – his hands swooped you up underneath you and placed you onto the stairs above where he stood. Before you could ask what in the world he was doing, he knelt on the stairs to position himself between your legs. Your eyes bugged, realizing he was meaning to take you outside his chambers. You frantically looked over his shoulder down the hall where the guards had not ascended and had instead taken places against the wall, not paying mind to what was about to transpire. They acted as if they were statues.
Your skin was set alight as his hands dove up your dress and his fingers came into contact with your bare legs. And your cheeks burned knowing that you could so easily be exposed to the guards below if Thranduil happened to move a certain way to give them or anyone else who happened to come into the hall view.
“My lord?” you squeaked, hands coming down to push at your skirts to try to cover yourself again.
“I’m here,” he assured you, slapping your hands away. He trailed kisses up your thigh towards your sex.
Not deterred by his slapping, you tried to push him away again and his fingers dug into your thighs in response, and he came up to catch your mouth with his. When he pulled away again, you were breathless.
“What… what are you doing?” you asked him, voice shaking.
His eyes were dark, and he informed you, “I will taste you. I’ve thought about your sweetness all night. It was not until you asked to retire that I realized I could not wait any longer.”
“My King, you have had much wine. We are not in your chambers—” you tried to reason.
“I can do as I please,” Thranduil cut you off, pushing your skirts further up.
He was coming at you again and it took everything in you to not place your hands on his head through the bunched-up fabric to push him away from you. That would certainly not go over well to accost him in such a manner, especially in front of his guards. You looked towards them again, but they were still standing, staring straight ahead stiffly.
“Please, you must—” you raised your voice towards them to try to plead to them to intervene but squeaked again when Thranduil nipped at your inner thigh, his breath hot. You adjusted, trying to move your sex away from his desperate kisses.
He was not listening. His hands gripped your hips tight, yanking you to his waiting mouth. His tongue lapped up flat and hungry, teasing to dip into you.
“Your grace, we should retire before indulging in the other,” you spoke rushed, still squirming to halt his advance to no avail now with his grip on you. Another lick and his tongue did dip now. Your breath hitched, “What your people will think if they find you and I in the halls engaged in such an intimate act?”
You went ignored and gasped erotically when his tongue delved, licking at your nub. Your neck was burning with embarrassment at the position he was putting you in.
“It is unbecoming!” you snapped, losing your patience. You shifted roughly, using your knee to push his shoulder in a fluid motion. You succeeded in getting his tongue away from you but you had irritated him. He jerked away and his mouth was in a thin line. Your voice was still raised, “You told me I was not to be treated like a whore like my father meant for it to be. Are you going to break your vow?”
The crackle of the torches lighting the hallway and the party far off in the distance were the only sounds beside yours and Thranduil’s heavy breaths as you stared the other down. You had already irked him and you wanted – nay, needed – to stand your ground. It was one thing to have his people know of your affair but to treat you this way? He was far too drunk, and you wondered if he would have shame in the morning. If he would recall it at all.
His gaze was boring into you, threatening you to say anything further. There was no need, you had said what you had wished to – made a very damn good point if you were honest.
A sharp exhale left him, and he stood abruptly, swaying. You braced for him to tumble over onto you at the movement, but he caught himself on the wall.
“Get up,” he ordered. You did so and began to straight out your skirt but he stopped your movement as his large hand grasped your face roughly; you winced at the pressure. “You forget yourself, lóth. You will not raise your voice to me. Ever. Do you understand me? I rule over you, not the other way around.” You nodded and his fingers flexed, eyes searching your face. He seemed satisfied with your answer. “Good.”
Letting go, he told you, “You may continue to my chambers.”
Turning, you hid your hands that were shaking. But thanking the stars above that you would find privacy upstairs and that the guards had witnessed you trying to protect the dignity of their king. You could not imagine what rumors would have swirled about you allowing him to take you apart in public when he was intoxicated as he was.
You hoped that would win some favor amongst the elves and help to continue your assimilation into their society. A bitter win for the night.

hello! i'm really interested in using your dazzling light doc for a multimuse masterdoc (but i want to use all of yours, they are all so pretty!), but i'm kind of new to google docs in general... sorry if this sounds dumb but i was just wondering how i could duplicate pages within a doc? i have 8+ muses i'd like to include but every time i tried ctrl+c then ctrl+v i think i kept breaking the page ;__; i hope u can help and tysm in advance!!
Tumblr media
thank you for the enthusiasm & lovely words, anon ! there's no shame in not knowing your way around a site that's unfamiliar. even as an experienced doc - maker i'm still learning, i literally only found out about watermarks the other day.
Tumblr media
honestly, i'm not surprised that beginner doc users would have trouble with something like this; there's a lot of fiddling to do and it can be overwhelming. let me explain below the cut.
quite unfortunately there's no button or magic wand to duplicate the page real quick, though it'd be dreamy of google docs to actually add something like that. instead, i'd assume we're just dealing with a case of copy & pasting with care to making sure the entire table is selected & the fact we're gonna need to manually move images.
to recap: copy & paste. make sure the entire table is selected. the images may disappear but you can just paste them back in. you might need to eyeball the positions, but you can also refer to positions in image options !
however, i understand that all of this might be a bit intimidating. if you let me know what version you want to use i'll hop onto docs really quick and add another page for you myself, as it should only take a minute or two ! then i'll link the adjusted document in another ask ? :]

[Image ID: Chibi Lars in front of a blue background. A thin gold frame with golden vines surrounds the image. His name is written in white and teal cursive font in the bottom left corner. There’s a watermark over part of Lars’ head with the text “Tumblr @ wizardessheart-sideb” on it. It’s in the style of the event “Sweet Providence I.” /End ID]
As soon as I fell into the sofa in the prefect’s office, I knew I was done for the next couple of minutes. Who knew teaching the Unus students about tarot would be so hard? I was the only one in the office and it was the perfect time to unpack my stuff and take up space before the others got here and her barely had room to breathe. They really should give us a bigger office since there’s so many of us, I  thought as I started pulling things out of my perams and placing them onto mine and Yukiya’s desk.
The door opened and my stomach dropped a little. I was really hoping for some extra time. I didn’t want to have to shove everything to my side of the desk. But it wasn’t Yukiya that came in. Lars bounded into the room, looking as cheerful as every. A smile found its way to my face.
“Hey, Lars!” I reached out for him and he took my hand before sitting in Yukiya’s chair next to me. “How did classes go?”
“They were fine. Almost set something on fire, but I didn’t,” he replied.
“You… you set something on fire?!”
“I almost set something on fire.” Lars sighed, leaning back in his chair. “I kept running into setbacks with a magic tool and wasted too much time, so I didn’t measure something right because I was rushing and it almost caught fire.”
“Lars…” As much as I was worried, I guess at least he was okay? “Were you okay?”
“Oh, I was fine. I managed to finish the assignment by the skin of my teeth, but it was fine.” Okay, not exactly what I meant, but he seemed fine, so I dropped it. “How were your classes?”
“They happened,” I responded. Lars made a sympathetic noise and let go of my hand. His hand gently rubbed my shoulder. “Thanks. It was just tiring. I had to teach them tarot card safety and basics and for some reason, the safety aspects just weren’t sticking with them.”
“That’s a bummer.” Lars leaned in for a quick side hug. At least at the end of the day, I could depend on Lars for emotional support. “If you need help with the next class, I can help you out! You don’t need magic to read tarot cards!”
“Are you sure? I don’t want you to miss a class because of me…”
“No, it’s totally fine!” He was basically bouncing in the chair.
“What’s fine?” We looked towards the door and saw Elias come in.
“I’m going to help my amazing partner with their tarot card class!” Lars said happily.
“Lars was offering to help me out. I don’t know why but the class just wasn’t grasping the basics,” I told him. Elias nodded at sat at the desk he normally shared with Alfonse.
“The Unus students this year are having trouble with safety basics. Yukiya and I have been running into that issue too,” he said. “They don’t seem to understand that you need to properly finish Ouija board sessions.”
“Oh, yikes,” I shuddered.
“I don’t know a lot about ghosts, but I can help with tarot cards! Let me show you that I got this!” Lars was bouncing again, eyes shining bright. He honestly looked more like a puppy than a boyfriend. And although his enthusiasm was great, I just didn’t know if that would translate well into teaching about tarot.
“Well, okay,” I said slowly, pulling my tarot cards out of my peram. It… It wouldn’t hurt to let him try, right? He eagerly snatched up the cards and started shuffling them. At least he was better at shuffling than I was. He spread the cards out a bit sloppily, though. And I guess I couldn’t fault him for that, but still, was it really a good idea to pull him out of class to help me? I picked a card and Lars flipped it over.
“The upside-down Empress!” he called out.
“It’s called ‘reversed,’” Elias corrected him from his desk.
“Haha, oh yeah. Reversed.” Lars laughed a bit sheepishly. “Uh, okay, so it means celebrations, light…. Uh, everything becoming clearer. Does that apply to anything in your life?” I guess that last one sort of did. It was clear Lars could at least do this. But still, I wasn’t confident in having him help.
“… Yeah…”
“Awesome! Then I can totally help next Friday!” he exclaimed.
“Wait, next Friday?” Elias perked up.
“Yeah, that’s the next tarot class I have,” I told him. Elias frowned.
“Lars, you can’t go help with a class. We’re going to be gone all day at that press event for that tool you worked on with Father,” Elias reminded him.
“Oh, shoot! I completely forgot!” Lars’ grin quickly disappeared. He turned to me. “I’m sorry, I guess I can’t help after all.”
“That’s okay. The thought alone counts.” I gave him a small smile. Thank you for the out, Elias and tarot cards.

THE SAIMON FAMILY CASE recaps [11/13]
In which Ajiro finally tells us what’s going on via a long Wordplay Hell, we learn many things about Tensui and the Saimon family, and the author won’t let you forget how much he loves Maijo Otaro. [tw: talk of anti-Korean violence]
--
On September 1st, the detectives are in the middle of their usual work in the Club (though Ajiro for some reason seems to be paying more attention to a TV documentary looking back on the Great Kanto Earthquake). They learn from a phone call that Hyousen’s wife, Shima, died of heart failure. It seems that she grew sick from exhaustion while helping his husband manage the entire Fujita-gumi after Kyuuzou’s passing. It’s worth repeating that her death did not happen on the 19th.
After the funeral, Ajiro heads alone to Hiroshima Prefecture where he was born. Kirigirisu learns from more knowledgeable Arito Tarou that Ajiro actually pays regular visits there, checking on a child that was orphaned during the Ajiro Family Murder Case. Arito doesn’t intend to share any more details.
--
“You know, Kirigirisu,” Ajiro says once he comes back on September 5th, “there’s a lot of people around me who have the kanji for “horse” (馬) in their names.”
Ajiro’s father, who died during that mysterious Murder Case, was called Souma (壮馬). Incidentally, the Tsukumo family member who took care of the hammer sharks was also called Souma (蒼馬), and he had brothers Tsushima (対馬) and Ranma (乱馬). That orphan that Ajiro regularly checks on also has some sort of a name ending in -ma (Kirigirisu isn’t told the exact name, as the Ajiro Family Murder Case is still a confidential L Crime). Even the building where Nihon Tantei Club is located is called Madano (馬多野).
Ajiro doesn’t say what he actually means by pointing this out. Instead he makes a phone call to the journalist Uyama Hideo. Uyama has been investigating the Shiroyasha Case closely and confirms that it’s still going on. He acknowledges with his usual sighing that (oh…) it might be dangerous for him to investigate any further, but (oh, oh…) he’s determined to get to the bottom of this.
After the call, Ajiro says that Uyama would make a fine detective, as his words hid an important hint.
“What word leaves the deepest impression when you listen to Uyama?” he asks Kirigirisu.
“Do you mean… all that oh he’s doing?”
“That’s right. That oh is the key to the case. Or rather, the fact that it’s a repeating oh, oh. Not only that, Uyama’s presence itself hints at the secret behind the case.” Ajiro makes sure they won’t be heard by others in the office before continuing.
First, he explains the Rising Flag Card, the illusion in which a spectator had to choose one of the flags. The truth is, the spectator assisting in the illusion was cooperating with Koyomi—but in a different way than one may expect. He wasn’t a planted assistant, but a so-called impromptu stooge. First, he was chosen from the audience using a quiz that would require a certain level of adult intelligence. The spectator would get on the stage, be asked to select a card, and choose the exact card Koyomi wanted once he saw the magic words written on the table.
The magic words were simply “Please choose the flag of Japan!” and a promise of getting a cool souvenir if he cooperated. Secrets really are that simple sometimes.
For his next explanation, Ajiro pulls out that 500 yen coin gimmick out of his pocket—but wait, why does he have it? Gensui made the coin disappear at the end of his last lecture!
“Kirigirisu, do you still not understand the method even after I’ve just explained it? I was the impromptu stooge in Gensui’s illusion.”
Ajiro performs Change The World: he puts the coin on top of his open left palm, moves his right hand above it, the coin disappears in an instant… and just a moment later falls on the table from above.
The method is once again simple. Ajiro first threw the coin up into his right hand using a sleight called the Muscle Pass. Then, when Kirigirisu was paying attention to the magically empty left hand, Ajiro simply threw the coin in the air.
When Gensui performed Change The World for them, he threw the coin to Ajiro, who hid it in his pocket. As we remember, Ajiro was also an impromptu stooge in the sponge ball multiplication illusion. The magician making someone their accomplice just by giving them a right look is a very fun aspect of magic.
It stops being fun when a similar technique is used by a murderer.
“When we were given the investigation request, in a sense we became assistants chosen from the audience to participate in the illusion. I can’t ignore the possibility that we unwittingly became impromptu stooges, helping the magician do exactly what he wanted.”
“Then… we, who represent the audience, were intentionally shown Yumeji’s murder, were shown that we could be together with the suspects all day and a case would still happen, all so their alibi would be demonstrated to the rest of the audience—the rest of the world…”
“The reason why I reveal the impromptu stooge secret to you today is because I finally decided to confront Gensui. He has to either be the culprit, or at least be involved with them in some way. Uyama’s words inspired me. You see, one time when he said his usual oh, oh, I heard it as houou.”
Houou… and what on earth does that mean? A phoenix? A pope? An emperor turned monk? Kirigirisu can’t guess.
Ajiro doesn’t explain it yet, but adds that Uyama used other hints as well. For example, one time when talking to Ajiro, he mentioned this “Maya” author that he wanted to help debut—not an actual person, rather his concept of an ideal writer. In fact, he dreamed of two writers like that and even already created pen names for them.
One writer’s name would be inspired by the name Uyama Hideo, an anagram of which was maya-o-dehiu, so basically Maya wo debiu— (“let’s have Maya debut”).
The other dream writer, the true personification of Uyama’s ideals and concepts, a writer-y ultimate weapon of sorts, would get Uyama’s oh put in front of the common first name Tarou. Uyama would want for that writer to evoke strong feelings about concepts he loves beyond anything else, ma (“evil influence” or “devil”, also "magic") and ijou (“strangeness”). It would be a bit difficult to make a coherent writer nickname out of all that, but Uyama still longs to find that Outarou of Mai and jou.
...but we’re getting off-topic here. As for this ideal “Maya” writer, Uyama once told Ajiro what seemed like drunken nonsense at the time:
“Oh… I’d like to meet that Maya soon. He’s like a prince for me. Oh... oh, Maya the prince...”
Ajiro still refuses to explain just what on earth could this mean. Instead, he talks about another illusion Gensui showed them, the one with the gimmick pen seemingly penetrating a bill. It seemed like it would work with any place on any normal bill, which leaves two questions. One, why was Gensui so against using a 1000 yen bill? Two, when he did perform the illusion with the 10,000 yen bill from Ajiro, was it just an accident that he aimed the pen between the portrait and the watermark, instead of just having it go through the portrait for a better effect?
As for that second question... maybe there’s a reason why Gensui wouldn’t be able to pierce the portrait. Ajiro shows Kirigirisu two bills, 5,000 yen and 10,000 yen. Both look normal, both with Prince Shoutoku on them as usual, nothing strange.
“I don’t know if Gensui was even aware of what he was doing,” Ajiro says, “but the reason why he couldn’t pierce through the portrait was because he would be stabbing an image of himself. The true identity of Soga Tensui is Shoutoku Taishi.”
Which sounds completely nuts.
But Ajiro seems completely serious, so Kirigirisu has to accept it for now.
“So when you jumped to the occasion to lend Gensui the bill, you were aiming to test this theory?”
“Precisely. The other bill also has its own meaning.” Ajiro points to the 1,000 yen bill that Gensui and his family didn’t want to use, the one with the politician Itou Hirobumi.
Kirigirisu once again has no idea what this means. However, he now realizes that those strange words Ajiro once said about “ambassadors” (taishi) and having “ambition” (also taishi) may have been him dropping clues.
Ajiro starts a lengthy explanation of his reasoning.
--
Shoutoku Taishi is famous for introducing Buddhism to Japan and thus becoming a religious leader of sorts—the word for such a religious leader would be houou.
Uyama’s words about “Oh, oh, Maya the prince” were a hint about “Oh, U-maya-do prince”. Prince Shoutoku’s actual name was Prince Umayado (or Umayato)—Umayado no Ouji or Umayado no Miko (lit. “the Stable Door Prince”).
As for Ajiro’s claim that Uyama’s existence in itself pointed to the solution, the name Uyama Hideo is an anagram of umaya (w)o hide, “came from the stable”. Legend has it that Prince Shoutoku was born in front of a stable, which is where his name Umayado no Ouji came from.
Also, Uyama had that other nickname, Hideomi (日出臣), the kanji possibly referring to “the (land of) rising sun” (日出処) and “minister, subject” (臣). Prince Shoutoku famously wrote in a letter to the Emperor of China: From the sovereign of the land of the rising sun to the sovereign of the land of the setting sun.
Okay, but all those wordplays just link Prince Shoutoku to Uyama. Where's the relation between Shoutoku and Soga Tensui?
First of all, that shrine in which Tensui loves to hide is called Shouryouin (聖霊院). That’s suspiciously similar to Shouryoue (聖霊会), a ceremony held on the anniversary of Prince Shoutoku’s death in Shitennou-ji, a temple built on Shoutoku’s own request.
Oh, and another temple connected to him, Houryuu-ji, has a part actually called Shouryouin—a hall dedicated to Prince Shoutoku’s soul. Another part of Houryuu-ji is Yumedono, the Hall of Dreams that looks highly similar to Tensui’s Shouyrouin and is associated with—you guessed it—Prince Shoutoku.
Shitennou-ji and Houryuu-ji have one Sword of Seven Stars each in their collections, both weapons allegedly having belonged to Prince Shoutoku centuries ago. Shiroyasha’s sword looks awfully similar to them.
As for that entire spiel about names that have a “horse” in them—it also fits the name of Shoutoku’s associate Soga no Umako (蘇我馬子). The historic Soga clan was probably where the name Soga Tensui came from (although it uses different kanji). Considering that Prince Shoutoku had some blood connections to the historic Soga family, he would be a Soga himself.
Kirigirisu can’t help but notice the entire theory is flimsy. What next, are we going to claim that the Club’s own four Young Shitennou are a hint about Shitennou-ji?
Ajiro seems to think that is the case. In fact, if we look at those four, we have two whose names resemble temple names (Raiou-ji and Yakushi-ji), Mikuruma whose first name is read Noritaka, but spelt just like Houryuu(-ji) (法隆), and then Gotou, whose real name is Gojuunotou, “five-storied pagoda”, just like one of the buildings of Horyuu-ji.
“Kirigirisu, meaningful coincidences—messages from God, you could call them—are scattered all throughout this world. It's an undeniable fact that Uyama and our detectives all really exist and are named the way they are. Obviously it's not because some writer came and gave all characters of his novel convenient names. Yes, I know that my grandfather’s reasoning method, mushindenshin, is defined by being able to access “godly knowledge” by freeing oneself from obstructive thoughts, but the phrase doesn’t refer to any actual god. Just to detecting those coincidences—those godsend messages.”
[Mushin can mean both the Buddhist concept of becoming free of obstructive thoughts, as well as simply innocence; I feel like the first definition fits Soujin better, but the second one may fit the book more, considering how much we talked about the relation of childhood innocence and magic.]
Ajiro agrees that even though all the coincidences point to there being a connection between Prince Shoutoku and Soga Tensui, it’s a weak proof. However—
“Kirigirisu, all of this doesn't mean that Soga Tensui actually is Prince Shoutoku. I myself don’t believe that’s the case. What matters is whether or not Soga Tensui himself believes it.”
If Soga Tensui really is convinced he’s Shoutoku, then surely it's not just a coincidence that the Sword of Seven Stars was used as a murder weapon.
When Ajiro talked with Ryuuguu Jounosuke, the boy didn’t want to answer the questions about whether the name Shakuya was related to the Big Dipper, and whether the word shaku had another important meaning. His silence proved that it was indeed a part of yossha no ojisan’s secret. Ajiro explains that aside from a dipper, the word shaku can also mean a ritual baton often seen in portraits of noblemen… for example, held by Prince Shoutoku in his portrait on the bill.
Another hint is that when they met all the children that one day in the winter, Tousen Matoki was pretending to be Prince Shoutoku, as if he got that idea from somewhere. Ajiro thinks it highly possible that Soga Tensui, for whatever reason, told only the children about his “real” identity being Prince Shoutoku. It’s likely that adult members of the family like Taishi have no idea about his belief.
Speaking of whom, Taishi’s first name is of course yet another coincidence leading to Shoutoku Taishi.
But back to what Jounosuke told them, the phrase yossha no ojisan was also a clue: ojisan is similar to ouji-san, “prince”. The young wordician could definitely mix those two meanings together as a form of wordplay.
Then what does the yossha part mean? Ajiro thinks that it was the result of young Jounosuke substituting a better known word for an unusual name: Yoshua…. also known as Jesus.
“Oh my god!” Kirigirisu shouts when he realizes just what that means.
“God indeed,” Ajiro gives him a wry smile. “Jesus Christ himself. Soga Tensui believes himself to be not only Prince Shoutoku, but also Jesus.”
What kind of a ridiculous sect thing did they stumble into?! Prince Shoutoku and Jesus at once…
Ajiro explains that the concept of Shoutoku and Jesus possibly being connected isn’t that new. There’s even a fringe hypothesis that they were one and the same person. After all, there is no definite proof of Shoutoku even being a real historical figure, so maybe all those legends about him were created later. As for Jesus, there’s so many theories about him that some Japanese people insist that he avoided crucifixion by switching places with his younger brother, escaped to Japan, and was buried in the quiet village Shingo. Soga Tensui no doubt made use of that vagueness of history to prop up his belief.
And here’s where another part of their conversation with Jounosuke comes into play. Ajiro asked him about the word juuku, then about Golgo 13. Both these names actually mean the same thing. Golgo 13 references Golgotha, the place of Jesus’s crucifixion. With juuku, you have to imagine both its kanji written vertically, 十 on top of 九... which, if you squint, may look like a cross on top of a hill—Golgotha.
What’s more, nineteen (十九) refers to when all the deaths of the Case happen: the 19th day of every month.
The Saimons live in Shimane Prefecture, the location of the legendary Izumo known as the Land of Gods. According to legends, it's the place where gods would gather (though they were much different gods than Jesus). Their exact gathering place is said to be the shrine Izumo-taisha, more specifically a part of it called Juukusha (十九社)—yet another juuku.
Ajiro at first thought Juukusha could be the only inspiration behind Saimon Juku’s name, but the Golgotha hypothesis was more likely. After all, the phrase juujika no kyuu (“the hill of the Cross”) could be shortened to juu-kyuu, which can be written down as 十九.
There's still one other hidden meaning that Ajiro discovered in words.
The “Land of Gods” (神の国) that Fujita Daisen so passionately spoke about might mean something other than Izumo. When using alternate readings for the kanji of that phrase, kan for “god” (神) and koku for “land” (国), together it would make kan(no)koku = kankoku. The land Daisen wanted to see before his death was kankoku, South Korea (or maybe Korea in general).
“But why would Daisen want to see Korea so much?” Kirigirisu asks.
“Because Korea is where his family is from.”
“Do you mean that Fujita-gumi had a lot of Koreans in it and Daisen’s father Kyuuzou married one of them?”
“No. The Fujitas aren’t of Korean descent. I meant that many people from the other side of Daisen’s family, the Saimons and their relatives, are Zainichi Korean.”
Kirigirisu is utterly baffled by this statement. Didn’t Ajiro himself tell him about how the Saimons had been living in Tsuwano for seven centuries?
Well, Ajiro himself didn’t know the entire truth back then, and what he told Kirigirisu wasn’t technically a lie: the Saimon lineage does reach that far.
However, all three Tamakos are Korean.
As Kirigirisu forgot a lot of basic history due to his amnesia, Ajiro gives him a much needed lecture. [This is told in the same way Ajiro tells it; possible biases are on him and the author.]
--
First, we have to take a look at how the relations between Korea and Japan looked like over the last hundred years. After the incident of 1875 when Japanese soldiers attacked Korean Ganghwa Island, Japan pressed Korea to sign the unequal Japan-Korea Treaty of 1876.
Near the end of the 19th century, a lot of Koreans moved to work in Japan. Among them were namsadang, groups of travelling entertainers performing various circus acts. The three Tamakos were a part of one such group. They did a lot of shows in Japan’s coal mine towns, and it happened that two owners of these mines—a Tsukumo and a Tousen—along with their Saimon friend set their eyes on the three Tamakos, and then essentially bought them for marriage. The love-struck men used their riches to establish the Soga Tenju Troupe for their wives.
Soon, things started getting worse for Korea, until finally Japan annexed it with the Japan-Korea Treaty of 1910.
Korean people faced many human rights violations at that time. Japanese police killed thousands of Korean protesters during the March 1st Movement in 1919. Thousands more were massacred in the aftermath of the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, when false rumors claimed that Korean residents would poison wells or commit arson.
During World War II, huge numbers of Koreans were forcibly relocated to Japan to serve as laborers and soldiers, and at least a hundred thousand Korean women were brought into sex slavery as “comfort women”. The policy called soushi-kaimei came into effect, pushing Korean citizens to change their names to Japanese ones in order to facilitate assimilation. Teaching the Korean language and history in schools was eventually prohibited, and visits to Shinto shrines were compulsory no matter the faith.
After the War, Soviet Union occupied the north of Korea, while USA occupied the south. In 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea attempting to unify the country under its rule. The Korean War reached a stalemate in 1953, leaving the two Koreas still separate.
(The narration, which unlike our detectives knows the future, adds that this armistice is still in effect in the early 2000s, but efforts are being made to officially end the Korean War, for example with the 2000 Inter-Korean Summit.)
[And we, the readers from 2020, may add that even more efforts to resolve the conflict are being made lately, many summits between the leaders of both Koreas and US going on since 2018.]
--
“Then… boss, could the motive behind the Saimon Family Case have something to do with the past events between Japan and Korea?” Kirigirisu asks, moved to tears by all the bloody history he just heard about for the first time (or at least for the first time since his amnesia).
“I can’t say for sure, but the possibility is high.”
Then… If we assume Soga Tensui really is the culprit, what exactly is the motive? It's true that both Gensui and Tensui are Japanese by descent [as in, none of the Tamakos and presumably no other Korean person can be found among their close ancestors, see the family tree]. Then again, Tensui’s closest ones are descended from one of the Tamakos; his wife Miku could count as being third generation Zainichi, and his son Juku as fourth generation. [I'm not sure if the term Zainichi would actually apply here, but this is how Ajiro uses it. Note that by his definition, Nemu and Yomiko are also fourth generation.]
Out of the twelve victims of the Case so far, nine were of Korean descent (the remaining three being Daisen, Daisetsu and Kyuuzou).
The question is once again: who is targeting who?
In Kirigirisu's mind, it looks more and more like Soga Tensui isn’t actually the culprit, but one of the targets. Someone from outside may be trying to destroy the entire giant family.
However, Ajiro still seems certain that Soga Tensui is involved in the Case.
Ajiro continues his explanations. Everyone from the family except for the three Tamakos is by law considered Japanese in the family register, and the entries for each Tamako were apparently lost after the war. Basically, there is no easy way for an outsider to learn about their roots. As a part of a marginalized and often persecuted group, the Saimons prefer to keep their identity a secret from everyone, even from close friends like Ajiro.
Ajiro only learned about the family’s roots after Shiranui's detective friend dug out the information, but he had already suspected it based on multiple clues.
For example, the reason why the Circus received a warm welcome touring between coal mine towns could be in part because a lot of mine workers were Korean.
All those posters in the local bar portrayed celebrities of Korean descent, and the bar owner was Zainichi himself—in fact, all of the members of the hiking club except Daisen were. The word for that hiking club, sengakukai (山岳会), could even be a pun on “Korean mountain association” (鮮岳会).
Nagasaki-kai, the group that was once friendly towards Fujita-gumi, had a lot of Koreans in their midst, and their name could also be either a pun or a coincidence. “Nagasaki” wasn't written the same way as the city, but used another spelling (長先) that could also be read as chousen, “Korea”. As Ajiro explains, many Koreans in Japan enter yakuza because of their life circumstances. Many work in places such as pachinko parlors or yakiniku restaurants, and it’s very possible that it was the good relations with Nagasaki-kai that allowed non-Koreans Hyousen and Daisen to be granted supervision of respectively the parlors and the restaurants.
Another clue is related to the Saimon family’s two dogs, Koma and Ria. The name Koma comes  from komainu, the stone guardian lion-dogs at Shinto shrines. While the spelling changed over time, the term komainu originally translated to just “Korean dog”. The wordplay behind the name Ria is harder to guess: one word for a dog is wanko, and this particular wanko is named Ria. It’s therefore wanko Ria, or should we say: “One Korea”, something precious that was lost to time.
Other, maybe less probable details about the family also come to mind. For example, Ajiro thinks their unusual beauty could have been inherited from Korean ancestors, and Miku’s unusually tasting dishes were not the product of her inability to cook, but of her having a different palate than most Japanese people.
Even the magic show provided clues about the family's past: the Rising Flag Card changing from the Korean one to the Japanese one wasn’t a random choice.
The reason why the Saimons never use the 1,000 yen bill is because it portrays the first Resident-General of Korea, Itou Hirobumi, who approved the Korean annexation in 1909.
--
And so we have arrived at the following conclusions: the three Tamakos are Korean, many of the Saimons and their relatives are Korean-Japanese… and oh, right, Soga Tensui is convinced that he’s Prince Shoutoku and Jesus at the same time.
The question is, what on earth does all that mean for the Case?

Rosemary and Rue - Reread
Finally caught up on the series - now to go back and see what I missed before.
Contains spoilers for the series up to The Brightest Fell and the June 2018 Patreon short stories. All the spoilers. So many spoilers.
One hour before the pond - Toby is staking out Simon and enough hints are dropped that something bad comes of it.
Hi Oleander - have we met another Peri in the series? I guess they are anti-social enough to stay out of Toby’s radar.
Why doesn’t Toby know for certain that Simon was involved with the underworld before this? He’s been called a villain since at least the 50s and his magic’s been rotten oranges instead of cider for just as long. I guess the purebloods besides Sylvester and Evening aren’t talking to her.
So all of this was meant to draw October out without giving her allies to draw on - Sylvester’s out of the picture and not in any place to look for her - so that she’s taken out. What did Evening think when Simon turned her into a fish instead of killing her? Toby’s out of the picture - and maybe that’s enough, especially if she dies as a fish.
How long do koi fish live? Did Simon’s transformation help there? Why does he even have such good transformation magic - he should have blood magic and illusions. Transformation is Maeve’s domain. I guess he gets to branch out - transforming Toby’s shoes in TBF never did wear off, and he did turn Patrick’s suit into something more suitable for the party in a short story.
~14 years later~
Apparently we meet the Luidaeg now when Toby’s working as a checkout girl. Did she know of things that were coming? Wanted to see her niece? Is she in her ‘Cousin Annie’ disguise? Toby isn’t paying enough attention to tell me
Hi Mitch - do we ever figure out what Stacy’s fae heritage is? Is it too faint? How exactly do they end up with two Seer daughters? Is Stacy all she claims to be?
I am not sure why Toby is so utterly convinced that people seeing one pointed ear is going to betray Faerie - people will ignore and forget about much weirder things. Chelsea managed to get by fine for 16 years.
-
Tybalt! I don’t recall if we know how they met. Does October even know Tybalt’s history with the Torquill family, or even that he’s of the same generation-ish with them? She definitely doesn’t know about September yet, or that Tybalt was friends with the three of them, or anything else going on in London in the 17th century.
Did Tybalt know that Simon’s her step-father? He must have. The amount of information her allies don’t bother to tell her is amazing. And why didn’t she investigate Simon more? Any amount of digging would have turned up that relationship.
Hi Quentin, your life is never going to be the same.
Interesting that the first description of Amandine we get describes her as a liar. Amandine the Liar. I guess she really did want a human daughter, one that wasn’t going to get involved in Faerie. If it wasn’t for Toby resisting her attempts to make her human, she might have gotten that.
And now it’s her Changeling Choice - that the Luidaeg told Sylvester about. Is October named after August, or is she named after September? Explains why Sylvester flinches at her name. There is so much that October didn’t know then.
Are Moving Days ever explained? I guess it’s either May 1/November 1 or February 1/August 1 for when the courts moved from Maeve to Titania and back. Beltane is a celebration in Faerie, so it’s probably May/November.
June 9, 1995 to June 11, 2009 - I don’t know if those dates have meaning beyond Toby’s time in the pond. Also, does basically everyone in Faerie who cares knows she was there?
Why would Sylvester’s phone number have changed in that time? Why is Evening so nice to October? Is it part of of her con? Her past actions as described in this book don’t match anything else that come later. Early book weirdness?
Does October know that Cagney and Lacey are spying for Tybalt? Also, what is this about October finding Evening’s sister’s killer? Clearly that wasn’t another Firstborn. Did Eira just fit herself into some other family - but that wouldn’t explain the last name. Someone she convinced everyone else she thought was a sister? This book has so many questions. Evening plotting the destruction of the false Queen’s court? When she was instrumental in getting that queen on the throne? Getting Toby knighted?
This doesn’t make sense with her motivations later on - and I trust the Luidaeg and Simon with their explanations far more than I trust Evening. I think I will chalk it up to the first book and if it doesn’t appear in another book, it never happened.
Wait, dammit. Her sister’s name is Dawn, and Tybalt (or Patrick, I can’t remember) explicitly mentions a Daoine Sidhe by that name later. No last name given. Who are you, Dawn? If Evening’s pretending to be a regular Daoine Sidhe, fitting in with an existing Daoine Sidhe family is a good way to go.
-
“Even Sylvester, the most ‘human’ pureblood I’ve ever known’ - oh October, by TBF you definitely know enough to sense watermarks in people’s blood - you can see that Maida was once a changeling before the hope chest. Did you never think to re-examine your assumptions once you developed new powers? True, I’m sure that the twins were made pure-blooded soon or immediately after birth, but still. There were enough rumors that Tybalt figured it out.
Does August know? Did she think to look?
-
What’s up with Evening’s human body? Did she convince the night-haunts to leave one and just got up and left after healing? The night haunts didn’t actually eat her bullet-ridden body because she doesn’t show up in the flock later. Maybe she did what April did to get January back?
I guess some of these spoilers are meaningless without context because that last sentence makes no sense without April’s short story.
I thought Oberon’s lines had the blood magic? Why does Toby think everyone but the Daoine Sidhe get it from Maeve’s lines? Or does she not know about that yet?
What is October going ‘to end at last’? What mockery? Her being a changeling? Clearly Evening knew what was going on and meant for her to find the hope chest. If Toby is completely human, maybe whatever destiny is in Amandine’s line is gone. Since Evening can’t harm Toby directly, pushing her in the human world and away from Faerie does basically the same thing. Maybe.
Was working with Devin and the other changelings a contingency plan in case Toby came back from the pond? A way to get her human?
-
As far as the false Queen goes, I get why Toby never thought about her ascension. There wouldn’t be any rumors in 2009 that the Queen and King Gilad didn’t share a common race, and Toby didn’t know anything about Gilad. Clearly Mags did, and probably the Torquills, but it wasn’t worth talking about.
That is interesting timing - everyone says August disappeared in 1906, and Simon was working with Evening by the time of the earthquake in April 1906. That is at most 4 months to exhaust all other options and sell your soul to the devil.
-
I am concerned that going to Blind Michael for help is even a consideration. Who are the Tarans of the Berkeley Hills? Do they ever get mentioned again?
Also concerned that Toby can’t tell what blood Devin has.
-
Were the hope chests made to make the fae races ‘pure’? Who sired the Daoine Sidhe with Evening? Amandine pulled every trace of Daoine Sidhe from August before she was born so August was ‘pure’ Dóchas Sidhe but that wouldn’t work for other races. Do it enough times and you have enough for a population.
Tybalt, you know that hope chests exist. Are you just surprised to see Toby with one? Maybe that backstory hasn’t been developed yet.
-
Hi again Quentin. Hi Connor. Hi Raysel - I liked you better when you were elf-shot.
Have we found out how Luna and Raysel got out of Simon’s hidden bubble? I don’t think we have. Does Raysel and Connor know that Simon’s her stepfather? I like how Raysel calls her ‘failure’ just like the Luidaeg calls Simon ‘failure’.
Does Sylvester’s allergy to cats extend to Cait Sidhe? Do purebloods normally get allergies, or is this leftover, like Maida’s scars?
There is no indication that they were as upset by Dawn’s murder as they are by Evening’s.
-
And Toby is covered in blood for the first time! All of it hers.
Hi as-yet-unamed Marcia! Toby can’t make out your blood - are you really a thin-blooded changeling, or something else?
How exactly does Lilly know Amandine? Did she always know who Amandine was?
Hi Julie, hi Ross - you were gone too soon.
Toby’s passing out again, yep.
-
How exactly did Devin save the Luidaeg from burning? She’s been in the city forever. I’d say he was lying if she didn’t confirm it. Definitely lying when he said he called Sylvester though.
I will say that the Torquills and the Lordens don’t care about mixed marriages, but Raysel and Connor’s children would be interesting.
Is it adultery if your affair is with a changeling? Human is a definite no, but changeling?
Why does Goldengreen open on Amandine’s name and not Evening’s?
-
Oh, those times when Luna was friendly. I miss those times.
And Toby wasn’t paying enough attention at the register - the Luidaeg does have her customary face.
Rose goblins being “an accident on the part of a niece of mine” - Luna? Or one of her sisters?
Amandine trying to “fix matters on her own”, oh yes.
Goldengreen wasn’t the first hope chest, but it’s the one the Luidaeg had before it ended up with Evening. The first one was given to Eira? A half-blood child? Not really how I would describe her, so maybe it went elsewhere. Maybe to the first child who descended from both lines?
“It all came back to blood and roses” - Amandine’s magic. I forget what the other half of Eira’s magic is, the one that isn’t roses.
-
At least Devin gets to avoid Evening’s revenge by being dead.
Does Toby still visit Dare’s grave? The books don’t say. She does still have the knife though.
-
Done with Rosemary and Rue! On to Tamed Lightning with January and April.
There’s a lot in this book that sets up the series, but there’s a lot of pieces that don’t fit cleanly. What exactly was Evening up to with October and the kids from Home?
