A Blessed Destiny - Shylock September Seasonal SSR

From the event Reminiscence of the Unfinished Wine, ft. Shylock and Bradley. Card story, training episode, and home screen line :] thank you to keyk for the raws!!

Card Story

Chapter 1

Shylock: Sir Sage.

Akira: Ah, Shylock! …And Bradley?

As I was strolling through the sunny Western wine town, I heard a voice call my name. I looked up to see Shylock seated on the terrace of a café, lightly raising his hand to beckon me over.

Beside him, Bradley sipped from a cup of coffee.

Akira: You two are enjoying a café? I would have thought you'd be enjoying a glass of wine somewhere.

Shylock: Your instincts are not entirely incorrect, Sir Sage. In fact, earlier this very afternoon I was enjoying a fine glass of wine.

Bradley: Listen, when a drink aficionado like this guy tells you a spot has mindblowin' Café Royale, you drop everything t' check it out.

Akira: Café Royale?

Shylock: That's what they call this specially-prepared coffee with a hint of brandy.

Shylock: First, you place a sugar cube on this special spoon with a hooked tip, and allow it to soak in brandy…

Shylock: Then, touch the sugar to a flame to burn off the excess alcohol. Once the brandy has been burnt away, the sugar is stirred into coffee and consumed.

Bradley: Brandy's made with grapes too, y'know. That's why it's also a harvest festival specialty.

Akira: Whoah… sounds fancy! If the alcohol is burnt off, though, does that mean I can drink it too?

Bradley: If ya can handle it.

Akira: Eh?

Shylock: Under normal circumstances, it would be fine. But this particular café only lets it burn for a moment, and leaves a significant amount of alcohol behind.

Bradley: It's basically just regular booze at this point. Otherwise, I wouldn'ta wasted my time drinkin' coffee instead of wine, would I?

Akira: Ah, is that so…

Akira: (I have to admit I was curious, so it's a shame I can't try it…)

Akira: Ah, is Café Royale available at your bar, Shylock?

Shylock: Unfortunately, it is not. I do not have the special spoon used to make Café Royale.

Shylock: I had always hoped I would come across one, but I never found one that met my standards.

Akira: Ah, yes… you're very particular about the style of your serviceware, aren't you?

Shylock: Of course. But, at your insistence, I will redouble my efforts at finding a Royale spoon for my collection. If you happen to come across one, Sir Sage, please do let me know.

Shylock: If one earns my approval, it will be my pleasure to make Café Royale for everyone at the manor. After all, it seems that you desire it rather passionately.

Akira: Was it that obvious…?

Shylock: Fufu. Your eyes keep enviously drifting to Bradley while he drinks.

Bradley: You're down bad, man.

Akira: Wah, I'm sorry…! but I do appreciate the offer. If there's anything I can do to make it possible, please do let me know…

Shylock: Hmm, I just may take you up on that generous offer. How would you feel about accompanying me to browse shops for appropriate spoons?

Shylock: There's a good chance we will be able to find something suitable in this very town.

Akira: Yes, I would love to!

Shylock: Bradley, I would like for you to join us as well, if it's no trouble.

Chapter 2

Bradley: Whadda ya need me for?

Shylock: You have a magnificent eye for aesthetics, and are excellent at treasure hunting, are you not?

Bradley: Naturally.

Shylock: Furthermore, I feel as though we are birds of a feather when it comes to our tastes.

Shylock: Even if a jewel was scratched up and rejected by the rest of the world, would you not desire it with your whole heart if you believed it was your destiny?

Shylock smiled softly, as if he had seen through a thinly-veiled secret. But Bradley snorted derisively, resting his chin on his hand in an arrogant gesture.

Bradley: Ya really love talkin' circles around people with all that flattery, dont'cha? All yer really sayin' is that you think the act of wantin' something is what gives it value.

Bradley: That's pretty much what I think, too. But, see, the moment I get the feeling of wanting somethin' that bad, I just take it by force before anyone can stop me.

Shylock: Fufu. Such an impatient man.

Bradley: I ain't got the luxury of lettin' shit like "destiny" control me.

Bradley: …But I'll make an exception n' go along with ya, just this once. But only 'cuz this Café Royale is insanely good.

Shylock: Thank you for indulging me.

Akira: (Listening to these two talk… For some reason, I was holding my breath the whole time…)

[screen fades to black, then returns]

Akira: Hmm… I don't even know where to start looking for something like this.

Shortly afterwards, the three of us began walking through the town's market, poring over stalls that had tableware on display. But no matter where we looked, we couldn't find the perfect Royale spoon.

Bradley: Oi. Didja check that one already?

Bradley stopped walking and pointed to a small, inconspicuous storefront tucked away in an alley. Shylock and I both followed the direction he was pointing.

Akira: It has a strange atmosphere around it.

Shylock: …Then, shall we go?

[screen fades to black, then returns]

The store was small and cramped, and wares were packing every shelf. The narrow aisles meant that we were all nearly bumping shoulders with each other as we looked around the store.

Akira: These items all have such unique designs.

Bradley: This joint must be run by a real piece of work. There's a lotta stuff here you'd have a hard time comin' across anywhere else.

Shylock: I agree. It's quite different from… ah.

Akira: Shylock? Is something the matter?

Shylock: This is…

Slowly, Shylock lifted a spoon up to the light. Gorgeous, intricate designs were engraved in great detail on the handle.

Along the very edge of the handle, there were what looked like letters I couldn't read -- most likely the name of the craftsman. It appeared to be a truly special creation.

Akira: Is that an ocean wave pattern? It's unusual, but very beautiful…

Bradley: I dunno the artist's name, but the detail around this part just screams "I'm gonna make it big one day", doesn't it?

Shylock: …I like it.

Shylock: I'll be taking this one.

Chapter 3

Bradley: If that's all, I'm headin' out.

Akira: Could you stay a little longer? Shylock is still paying for…

Bradley: No way. I'm gettin' too sober for my own good. Seeya later, Sage.

Akira: (Ah, Bradley's sleeve caught on a spoon on the shelf…!)

I hurriedly reached out and picked up the spoon that had been knocked off the display stand. When I looked up again, Bradley had already vanished.

Akira: Ah, he's gone…

I looked down at the spoon I had picked up. I could immediately tell it was a Royale spoon, due to the distinctive hooked tip. On the handle was engraved a design of a cat.

Although there were quite a few scratches on the metal surface, it only served to give the impression of a striped fur pattern.

Shopkeeper: Ah, pardon me. I apologize, but that spoon is not for sale.

Shopkeeper: I was preparing to throw it away, because, as you can see, it's terribly scratched.

Akira: Really?

Akira: (I thought the scratches were rather cute, like a tabby cat's stripes, but I guess it can't be helped…)

Shylock: Would you be able to sell it to us nonetheless?

Just as I was about to give in and hand over the spoon, Shylock, who seemed to have finished making his purchase, appeared beside me.

Shopkeeper: I'm glad it caught your eye, but it wouldn't do for a self-respecting merchant to have damaged goods for sale…

Shylock: It's an easy feat to pick out something shiny and new; it is a much rarer thing to come across something which is only made more precious by its flaws.

Shylock: In this way, this encounter is nothing short of a miracle. As such, please consider bestowing upon us your blessing.

Shopkeeper: …I've never heard someone value damaged goods so highly. Perhaps you're right, young man.

Shopkeeper: Okay, you've convinced me! Consider this a gift - you don't need to pay. Please treasure it for a long time.

Akira: Eh..? But…

Shylock: The owner of the establishment has given his word. It wouldn't do to disrespect it.

Akira: …Yes, thank you very much! I'll be sure to take good care of it.

[screen fades to black, then returns]

Akira: Shylock! Thank you for your help earlier

Shylock: I simply wished to support dear Sir Sage in the midst of their fateful encounter.

Shylock: …That said, if you wish to repay me, may I beg a favor in return?

Akira: Of course! Please tell me if I can do anything for you.

Shylock: It is a momentous occasion to have crossed paths with your destiny. Therefore, would you allow me the honor of using that spoon to prepare your first Café Royale?

Shylock smiles at me with his hand resting over his heart, as if he had invited me to a dance.

Akira: Yes, of course!

I nodded and broke out into a grin. The spoon, resting in my hand, glittered brilliantly in response.

Card Episode - The Feeling Of Being Eager To Grow Up

Akira: Drinking Café Royale at the bar like this is really enjoyable, Shylock. It feels like a special occasion, but still somehow relaxes me.

Shylock: It delights me to hear that you're enjoying it, Sir Sage.

Akira: Do any other wizards at the manor order Café Royale?

Shylock: Of course. It's mainly popular among my patrons who can't, or won't, drink alcohol.

Shylock: If I recall correctly, recently Riquet was thoroughly enjoying it. However, as much as I was tempted to treat him to as many complimentary refills as his heart desired, Oz was lingering nearby…

Akira: And that was a problem?

Shylock: Riquet was interrupted by Oz, who told him "If you drink too much coffee, you won't be able to sleep". And being such an adorable, obedient boy, Riquet decided he shouldn't have any more.

Akira: Ahaha, that definitely sounds like it would happen. Speaking of the young wizards, does Mitile enjoy coffee like this too?

Shylock: Mitile has been ordering Café Royale more frequently lately, ever since he saw Bradley enjoying it.

Shylock: However, Mitile also tends to look a little displeased with the bitter aftertaste.

Shylock: I simply can't stand to see such a sweet face becoming distorted with bitterness, so I find myself adding an extra touch of sweetness to his orders.

Akira: I guess he admired how Bradley drank it despite the bitter flavor, and wanted to prove he was mature enough to handle it too…?

Shylock: Perhaps. I, for one, can certainly understand that desire.

Home Screen Line

All that remains of Bennett wine is a scant few bottles from the most successful years. When, and with whom, will I savour those final drops? The anticipation alone is intoxicating, so much so that the thought of it is as fulfilling as a decadent meal.
