When I see "In order to know virtue, we much first acquaint ourselves with vice" I think Bataille said something very similar when talking about literature, in that he said that a profound understanding of morality comes from evil.

"Justine is a good woman in a man's world. She is a good woman according to the rules for women laid down by men and her reward is rape, humiliation and incessant beatings. Her life is that of a woman martyrised by the circumstances of her life as a woman."
Angela Carter, 'The Sadeian Woman and the Ideology of Pornography' (1978)

She awakens
to a dream within a dream,
but struggle though she might
she has been too long
wrapped in Morpheus’ arms.
She can hear the rakish laugh
of her beloved rogue
as he calls her name
and bids her
to begin anew the hunt.
— Sebastian Crow, Gothique du Grotesque: New and Selected Poems, (2015)
