A little review of yesterday's Cabaret in Baden is in order. I didn't know anything about the show beforehand, so everything was a surprise. The curtain already sets the mood of Berlin in the early 1930s. Absolutely in love with the design. The set design was minimalistic but it worked great.
Now the cast: Ann as Sally Bowles was brilliant. Her voice has a chanson-like quality, which fits the sound of the Roaring 20s quite well. The acting was also on point. It was great to see Maya Harkvoort in a role that fits her age. Voice and acting top-notch. And lastly Drew as the Conferencier had by far the most extravagant costumes. On high heels most of the time and doing what he does best: playing with the audience and singing his full range. The rest of the cast was really great as well.
It was a wonderful evening but the show leaves you with a bitter aftertaste because of the paralelles of the rise of the Nazis in the 1930s and the rise of far-right parties worldwide nowadays.
If you have the chance to see this production in Baden, I can highly recommend going. Tickets are also not as expensive as in Vienna and you can get to Baden easily by train.
