Mean Girls AO3 Stats - fandom/ media breakdown
Ship Break Down // Table Version
A visualization of how the different medias of Mean Girls compare on ao3. Technically they're fandom tags, but they're all kind of the same fandom so instead I use the terms media and fandom somewhat interchangeably here.
All data collected from ao3 on March 10, 2024 (Notes 1 and 2).
Total Number of Fics in Each Media (Note 3)
Media Comparison (Note 4)
Can we all take a moment to appreciate the fact that even with tag wrangling, "Lesbian Regina George" is the top additional tag in the 2024 fandom tag at 83 fics (fluff being at 78 and angst at 66).
Notes and Disclaimers
Note 1: Tag wrangling was used to collect data. Data does include locked fics.
Note 2: I manually collect data, so there are some timing discrepancies. I collected everything within two hours however, I'm pretty sure at least one fic got deleted/ added in that time so.
Note 3: [total fics by media] The first graph does not exclude any other tags - simply the fandom tag applied. The second graph only includes the media(s) listed (excludes all others).
Note 4: [media comparison] Calculated as a percentage of total fics in that media. In the case of "total", percentages are of the sum of the total number of fics in each of the media (1996). See table version for more information.
Note 5: [categories] f/f separated for visibility. Please note the difference in scale.
Note 6: I am an amateur (I failed my first year stats exam lol), so take that as you will.

Fastest Growing Fandoms on AO3 This Week (02/12/2024)
Every week I pull data on how many fics are in each fandom and compare to the previous week, then calculate the percentage increase to determine fastest growing fandoms. Since this naturally skews towards smaller fandoms, I have included the same data filtered to Over 1k, 5k, & 10k fics.
Overall:
Over 1,000 Fics:
Over 5,000 Fics:
Over 10,000 Fics:

F1A is really fun, and I think can be beneficial to the future of women in racing, especially if it promotes racing as a viable career for women/if women follow in Marta’s footsteps by using it as a stepping stone to higher level competition/if it helps women gain sponsors & access to team infrastructure they would otherwise be denied.
(It also could potentially be a problem if women get shunted to F1A when they could be competing at a higher level, but I don’t want to borrow trouble.)
One thing I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone point out, though, is there are currently two F1 teams that have signed girls in karting to their junior teams: Mercedes (Luna Fluxa) and Williams (Sara Matsui). This seems to signal a real belief in a future where women have more prominence in motorsport generally and F1 in particular.

A protest against Wattpad's new Content Guidelines
Recently, Wattpad has changed the Content Guidelines on sexual content, declaring that the age of consent is now 18. "Any sexual content between characters must abide by this age of consent and not be in violation of Canadian Law."
This is embarrassing for Wattpad. This is disrespectful to Wattpad users. This is a capitalist company conforming to conservative politics.
Wattpad is and has always been home to teenage writers. When I first learned of Wattpad at age 13, this orange app was everything to me. Wattpad is home to teenage writers and readers all around the world, with its many languages Wattpad is unique, and that is something to be proud of. Wattpad has given a creative voice to a generation and inspired young people to write and with multi media challenge our perceptions of the written word and literature. That is not nothing.
But the thing is, teenagers write stories about teenagers. Teenagers write sexual content that includes teenagers. Teenagers have sex in real life with other teenagers. To declare any of that illegal only has negative consequences.
Wattpad declares they want to create a safe space. They want to protect the community. If they really wanted to do that, then they wouldn't have these restrictions on WRITTEN, FICTIONAL sexual content.
Things that would make this a safer space and create and protect our community of global writers:
- quality sex education
- quality sex education in all languages used on Wattpad
NOW we are in a situation where WRITTEN FICTIONAL depiction of sex between fictional characters under 18 is not allowed. "Illegal sex acts" aren't allowed either. Should we thank Wattpad for clarifying that they mean "according to Canadian law"? Or should we wait with the thanking until they change it to local laws, or LGBT+ stories will be illegal as well?

Mean Girls AO3 Stats - ship breakdown
Fandom Tags Break Down // Table Version
A visualization of how the different ships of Mean Girls compare on ao3, with a focus on "The Big Three":
Regina/ Janis (406 fics total)
Cady/ Janis (334 fics total)
Regina/ Cady (183 fics total)
All data collected from ao3 on March 10, 2024 (Notes 1 and 2).
The Big Three (Note 3)
Top Ships in the Different Mean Girls Fandom Tags
I think the most interesting part of this is how much cadnis declined between the broadway and movie musical. They are very close to top ship in the broadway fandom tag (and was the top ship in that tag until the movie musical came out, from what I know). In the 2024 tag, they don't even make the top 10.
