So Howdy is basically that one annoying ass kid in high school who’d call everyone around him ‘queer’ as an insult when it’s pretty obvious that he was gay himself and self projecting? Lmaooo i love it and it really does explain a lot!

Ngl though and I’m not trying to bash on laughingstock but i think it’s EDDIE that Howdy might be crushing on since in the banner on the previous update, Howdy’s icon is looking at Eddie’s.

I think he treats him hostilely is because he has feelings for him and he doesn’t know how to process them and so it comes out as anger and passive aggressive resentment.

Ofc I don’t think he’d be the best partner for Eddie due to this… I do think though that when it’s revealed that Eddie and Frank are madly in love that it’s going to cause Howdy to feel more anger and maybe even hatred towards the two.

ehhhh.... not buying it, sorry!

i'd be willing to hear this theory out if there was any evidence other than "Howdy is looking at him in the banner" (and Home is looking at Howdy, and Barn is looking at Wally, and Wally is looking at Us, and Julie is looking at Frank - it doesn't necessarily connotate romance) and the idea of Howdy's treatment of Eddie being a "get out of my school" type of thing.

but if that were the case, wouldn't we have seen more evidence by now? like... Any?? Howdy and Eddie have had minimal interaction, and in each one Howdy was fully disinterested and dismissive of Eddie. there is literally nothing in his behavior or dialogue that implies romantic feelings, repressed or otherwise. you'd think that Howdy would at least get a little flustered or defensive, but he doesn't! all he expresses is disinterest and slight annoyance.

and this just... doesn't feel like a story where a major plot point is "character A is jealous of the established relationship because A is in love with one of them". it's a bit... how do i say? Tacky, perhaps? a touch basic? a teeny bit uninspired...

and character-wise, Howdy having feelings for Eddie doesn't make much sense (the thought that Howdy's treatment of him stems from romantic feelings Definitely doesn't). it doesn't really fit him and what we know about him? there's a reason Howdy views Eddie as a rival, i think.

the issue with seeking publication for my manuscripts is in order to do that you have to be willing to really strongly advocate for yourself and why it would be better for your manuscript to be published than any other, and, as a white guy whose manuscripts both draw very strongly from chinese literature and history, i’m not sure i can like. ethically do that lol

#i’ve attended plenty of seminars that are poc promising white women they are still allowed to write non-white characters #but i also know how systemic racism works #like my whiteness makes me HUGELY preferable over actual members of the culture and community that i owe a lot to in my works #and that’s unfair and i don’t want to contribute to it #but. i’d also like to be published. i’ve worked very hard on these #luckily i’m not in a place to start querying yet and my abysmal social media preference is a big turn off to publishers anyway #so that’s a problem for later me to deal with #ryddles

how in the world is mobile compatibility akin to accessibility? a big swath of neocities users are there BECAUSE they hate the way smartphones have become so widespread that many people have them instead of a computer. it's a pretty important part of the movement. "accessibility" is important because disabled netizens deserve to be able to view websites as much as everyone else, not because it can cater to more users. not having a computer is so far from being a disability that it's almost insulting to imply that the two are related in any way.

not everyone has access to devices with bigger screens. devices cost money. some people do not have enough money to purchase device with bigger screen. intentionally excluding people who cannot purchase bigger screen device is classist. (also some ppl just don’t want to have another device, or could buy another but aren’t for which reason.) denying access to someone who cannot afford a device is in my mind pretty similar to things like not providing image descriptions or being wary of eyestrain during creation. PLUS. is there potentially a link between someone being disabled and not having the money for another device? That would be crazy to think about wouldn’t it /sar

mobile support on the small web doesn’t have to be perfect, but how is not trying—or worse yet just being an ass—any better than not having image descriptions? if someone needs yet another several hundred dollar device to engage, what is the point of the “movement”? A web movement that does not try to be accessible is not free. Classism and ableism (just like every other social issue) are linked. What’s insulting is to imply that they aren’t. And if you can’t find some way to make your site more accessible, you aren’t a good webmaster.

This might’ve been said before… maybe by me, but I hope not since I intend to remain anonymous. If you know who I am, no you don’t ♥️. Anyways, Tam and Linh definitely have tummies! Tummy representation!

It’s natural for fat to be stored there especially when eating more than you’re used to at first. Since they likely had a large diet change when they were first introduced… tummies! Linh’s fat has likely redistributed itself throughout her body in a healthy way, but since Tam was recently held captive by the Neverseen (where they have nasty food and he admitted to skipping some meals), he’s likely still got a tummy. And I think that’s wonderful. Consider this my annual tummy appreciation.

I've heard of Tam with a tummy before (which was also accompanied by a reminder to be mindful of one's perception and attitude towards asian men), but I haven't heard of Linh yet!

I think both are wonderful ideas, exploring more of the effects of what they've been through and additional body types, shapes, and fat distribution. As that's definitely an area Shannon lacks.

I am appreciating tummies alongside you! Good for them, tummies and fat are good for the soul. And this specific instance ties into a theme (I can't think of a better word) that I've been seeing/hearing more and more recently, which is about the portrayal and focus on gaining weight as healing. Which I think could be a very potential-filled topic/area for the song twins, and that a lot could be done with it. Their bodies not just a representation of the physical hardship they went through (but that also being addressed), but of their mental well-being.

I think the tummy appreciation (along with other changes to body type/shape/etc) would be delightful to spread beyond the song twins! We can take it even further! There are so many characters to insert our own representation using, and I love seeing when people do so :)

So we’ll start with my main two since they’re the ones I’ve made known and will be easier to sum up first

Homeless!AU

Based on the ‘what if’ question of: “What if Vegan-Su didn’t help out Sheriff & defended him during the scene where their locked in a cage & Sheriff being a mutant has been revealed to the whole group”

Basically, I’m this Au, Vegan didn’t help out Sheriff in convincing the others that’s he’s still the same person regardless of being a half mutant. So once they’ve escaped & gotten the mushroom they just..kick him out. No real remorse or empathy. They don’t try to hear him out or anything. They just make him leave.

He does leave without a fight or anything, after all he’d unfortunately been expecting this outcome. And it’s not like he can really go back to the life he lived before so he hangs around the abandoned city.

Nothing is being done to prevent his mutation anymore aside from the occasional stealing vegetables from his old friends so it spreads (slowly) up his arm. He also ends up being able to understand the mutants unique language & speak it.

With a growing addiction to coffee beans, a hoodie that he found in the dumpster and no friends he lives his life in the city for a few months, at some point during that Shooter starts coming to the city to try and find Sheriff, feeling incredibly bad. Sheriff doesn’t particularly blame Shooter (though he still does partiality) he actively avoids Shooter and any potential interactions.

I’m a bit unsure on how to go about the group seeing Sheriff once more and the angst that will follow with, I’ve tried writing out some possible drafts but nothing seems to stick yet.

ZA!Au

My most recent in this list actually, it’s basically a post apocalyptic world filled with zombies and there’s no saving the world or anything like that, the story mainly just focuses on the group slowly building trust and a family they care about.

It starts off with just Sheriff, a 20 year old man who’s a known wanderer, never staying in one place for too long and never getting close to people, he stops at one town to stay the night and that’s where he meets Shooter where, against his will he enjoys the company of and quickly sees as a friend. He pushes those feeling down for the time being though.

The story (imo) truly kicks off once Shooter decides it’s a good idea to steal from this town. The townspeople are not fond of this at all and find stealing punishable by death because of scarce resources. So they’ve got Shooter at gunpoint, on his knees begging for some kind of mercy (it’s around the middle of the night I feel the need to add). Sheriff who was previously asleep sees this shit going down and it sets him off. I’ll spare most details but just know he gets his hands on a lighter, a car and a shitton of gasoline.

Shooter and Sheriff run (drive) off and end up at Brutux’s place, a guarded lighthouse. Going against anything they’ve ever heard about this guy they enter seeking refuge for the night, which they get. It’s pretty calm despite everything.

Until the next morning when the trio wake to yells of guards down below and a lot of crashing. Turns out two people (Vegan and BP) are stealing supplies and are getting away with it too. Brutux drags Sheriff & Shooter along to catch them to pay off him letting them stay the night.

They catch BP and Vegan at some point, probably when their in the fortress/lab thing. Surprisingly the sibling duo offer to let the trio stay with them since it’s high up and much safer. And despite the suspicion they agree.

There’s a lot of mistrust in the start but slowly. Like snail pace slowly they build up trust.

In this Au, Ryan and Dr. White are both dead fully, both being turned to zombies. With Ryan being killed by a 15 year old Sheriff but not before biting him, leading to Sheriff cutting his own arm off with an axe. And Dr. White being killed by Began & BP, having forced his children to kill him.

Time loop!Au

This one is a little under a year old.

It’s an AU where Sheriff is forced to repeatedly die during the final confrontation with the SM, the SM killing him each time (before the reveal of him being Ryan I should add) he’s got no idea why he’s being forced into this, at first being in denial, thinking he’s dreaming up until the fourth loop.

He keeps track of his deaths on a wall in his room in the ship, carving into it with a knife. There’s hundreds of marks, each signalling another death. There’s a small corner in amongst his tally’s. For when he ends the loop early.

Any scars that may’ve been obtained during a previous loop stay with him for all other loops and becomes normal in future timelines. How does he figure this out? When in one loop the SM fully takes his eye out before killing him. He wakes up and can only see out one eye. No one asks him about it.

Eventually he tries telling someone (I’m still not saying who 😈😈). He tells them everything, about the loops and his deaths. They think he’s crazy at first. At least until he shoots himself infront of them and they come running into his room, panicked he was dead. So now two people know.

That’s as far as I’ve gotten with this one, it’s been awhile since I’ve thought about it, might needa dust some cobwebs from my mind.

Hero!Au

The Au title speaks for itself. It’s a hero Au. In a world where powers exist, hero’s and villains do also.

Sheriff and Shooter are popular vigilantes, both being the laws nightmare and best friend. They help out with things though their method of doing so is sometimes questionable.

Sheriff has electricity based powers and pretty powerful ones at that, people with electricity powers are pretty high up on the danger scale given just how much they can do with their abilities, though it differs depending on the person.

For Sheriff he has to constantly have electricity in his system and so more often then not you may catch him sticking a fork in a socket and just,,absorbing the electricity. He’s capable of causing power outages if his powers are too much on the fritz. So yeah, not someone you want as an enemy.

Shooters abilities (if he truly has any) is unknown to the public, he’s Sheriffs partner in crime vigilante work and is responsible for all their tech and weaponry. Some people theorise that his ability lets him create almost absurd things from pretty much nothing (ima spoil it, it isn’t that)

Vegan Su, BP and Dr. White are all hero’s, top ones at that. Well less so Dr. White since he’s more focused on science and things rather than being out there actively saving lives. I’m yet to decide on hero names for the sibling duo and abilities for them.

Brutux is a villain but not your standard super villain, more so a criminal who deals with illegal things like drugs and certain weapons. He actually gets along quite nicely with our Vigilante duo and doesn’t tend to bother them as much.

Max and Jim are Sheriff and Shooter when their not out being vigilantes, the two work at a fairly small grocery shop (think IGA small- size wise I mean) and their manager is Brutux playing civilian (known as Alex to them) obviously Shooter, Sheriff & Brutux aren’t aware of each other’s double life identities since they do well to keep ‘em hidden. The truth may eventually come out though.

There’s a little bit of betrayal in this Au because at some point, Vegan pretends to be a vigilante to get close with Sheriff & Shooter- either to recruit them as hero’s or arrest them for several crimes.

That’s all I’ve got so far for this Au, like the time loop it’s been awhile.

Okay this is a very long post holy hell. And there’s one or two that I’m yet to talk about but currently my hand is cramping from typing this all up on my phone so I’ll do them tomorrow after school. This took like,, an hour to write ☠️☠️

Anyways though, hope you’ve enjoyed my insanely long ramble on my Au’s that I would never have shared if not asked to (I don’t really mind, the only reason I never shared them is because I came up with them all and thought it’d be too many & people would get annoyed at me for having so many but this fandom is starving, I don’t think people mind if I’m Au central™️/hj)

a few months ago, i installed a userscript that will automatically apply saved filters to whatever search you're making; however, because it was first made in 2014, the way it actually works is that it applies filters as if you were plugging something into the "search within results" box, which will not actually filter out tags, but rather, keywords present anywhere in a fic and its metadata.

this is not very useful on its own, considering the fact that most everyone likes ao3 so much for its robust tag filters. fortunately, there remains an old-fashioned search method from the time before native exclusion filters existed on the site, which allowed people to use "-filter_ids:[integer]" in the "search within results" box to exclude tags proper, as we expect them to work today.

there are, of course, other methods of having sticky/saved filters on ao3, such as bookmarking one's url after applying all the filters you desire to a particular search, but then that requires not only inputting all my filters again when i enter a new fandom tag (thereby necessitating maintaining a reference list), but also maintaining a bunch of bookmarks for everything i might want to regularly check, which. like. boooooo

anyway, another reason i like that userscript so much is bc a while back i learned that the ao3 advanced search box runs off apache lucene to parse its queries, meaning that you can actually get incredibly fine-grained with your requests. for example, to filter out both "slow burn that is complete and under 50k" and "slow burn that is in-progress and under 10k" while leaving all other slow burn fics in the same search:

-(filter_ids:103132 AND complete:false AND word_count:[* TO 10000]) -(filter_ids:103132 AND complete:true AND word_count:[* TO 50000])

or you could develop a whitelist for the tags you're filtering by using "!", like filtering out all ocs unless they're by a particular person:

-(filter_ids:2927 !user_ids:[integer])

point being, the ao3 advanced search box is very powerful, the possibilities are endless, and i am married to that saved filters script these days.

however, i am also a picky little bitch, and i have somewhere around a hundred tags i have automatically filtered out for my current fandom, and about forty additional tags that i have filtered out everywhere. the saved filters makes it a lot easier to maintain these filters, but also i'm lazy about appending new tags, and they can be hard to dig through if i want to take something out for whatever reason, so recently i've been putting together a spreadsheet that will automate the queries i want copy-pasted into the saved filters input box.

most of it has been simple, just maintaining a sheet with the name and filter_ids number of what i want filtered unconditionally, but for the more complex requests, uh.

(this one is supposed to say "22 !(176 || 110)")

(this one is supposed to say "((22 !(176 || 110 || 49838047)) AND expected_number_of_chapters:[5 TO 25]) || [further queries])"

........well, it's going!!!!

one of my friends says i should publish the spreadsheet when i perfect it, since even tho most people aren't as picky as me, it'd be nice to showcase ao3's fullest capabilities with it. for various reasons, it likely won't be much use to most people as a spreadsheet, but i've been Considering maybe figuring out how to make a userscript (or maybe even a firefox extension, if i can get permission from the people who made the relevant bookmarklets/userscripts to use their code And Also figure out enough js for that), so idk. stay tuned for that, maybe!
