Part 2: The fun Bits

Inspector Morton, yet another one appearance Scotland Yard detective. One that Holmes clearly trusts.

"The pink radiance of a tinted electrical light" Sadly Neon lights were invented in 1910. But colored and tinted glass has been around since humans began making glass on purpose, some time during I believe Egypt's new kingdom. Anyway, this is your weekly reminder that Victorians were gaudy.

There are some physical similarities between Culverton Smith and Moriarty, which I'll discuss in the wrap up.

I desperately want to know more about Smith's microbio setup. Many of the basic tools of my current profession were invented during the 1800's, including agars, plating techniques, and growth broths. I believe that, lacking sufficient refrigeration, Smith is solidifying his cultures in jars of agar, but I can't be sure.

"I have a note of Mr. Holmes' address" is a LOT more sinister when you realize that Holmes' work has only been put before the public in two novels at the time the story is set. It's explainable because they had dealings with each other on one of Holmes' cases before, but Holmes' address would not be known to literally every reader of The Strand until 1891.

"I need you to hide behind my bed" Holmes has a knack for making things awkward.

For those of you who forgot the actual reason Holmes is faking sick, he's engineering this confession from Smith, with Watson as a witness. Smith apparently murdered his nephew by infecting him with the disease Holmes is pretending to have. He's also been conducting human experiments on people, specifically infecting indentured or low wage workers on that plantation in India already discussed.

Watson is CRAMMED BEHIND THE BEDSTEAD listening to all this. Nerves of goddamn steel.

Holmes is also dehydrated as hell. He may be pretending about the illness but he's definitely not well - not eating for three days is severely uncomfortable, not drinking for three days is fucking dangerous.

The idea of forgetting Watson adds insult to injury. It's possible that Holmes, wrapped up in his denouement, did forget. It's possible Watson added this for flair. It's also possible that Holmes is delaying the moment that his friend is, understandably, pissed as all hell at him.

Belladonna constricts the pupil of the eye. It is also fucking poisonous. I'm not surprised Holmes has some handy.

A reversion is when a piece of property is returned to its original owner, such as when a lease ends. My guess is that this poor nephew inherited some land or money that would revert to Smith if he died without heirs, likely because it was inherited via his mother's line, his mother being Smith's sister.

I kind of forgot until I just watched it now but innnn *checks notes* S1E25 Ratchet says “you havent built up an immunity [to dark energon] like Megatron has.” hearing that I thought my headcanon of the robots only having a first line of immune defense was #over…BUT. I can think around this.

I mean…they’re aliens. And words, even when translated, mean different things in their context. And in the case of Cybertronians, immunity doesn’t mean our immunity, where our body adapts and creates antibodies to fight off infection, remembering and using that memory for bolstering defenses. Immunity for Cybertronians simply means tolerance.

The joke of dark energon being crack for Megatron literally works here. It doesn’t affect him as badly as it does for people like Arcee, because he spent so much time looking for it, holding it, standing next to it, and literally injecting himself with it. It’s not a virus his body had to conquer via human immunity. His processors and engines and whatever the fuck organ systems they have just adjusted to use it as regular fuel. The same way people need more and more caffeine the more they drink. I don’t need to explain this analogy further, you get it.

Vaccines still wouldn’t work because there’s no memory cells, there’s no antibodies being made in their bodies. It just learns to use a substance, but it doesn’t learn how to fight it and remember it. And a virus that breaks cells and leaves it dead as its duplicates spread out to cause damage at a tenfold rate…without an immune system to learn how to fight it, it cannot defend itself and succumbs.

Had to finish all my pendings and stuff so that I can enjoy a breather vacay w my family 😮‍💨

Some list that I (somewhat) accomplished:

find an rrl for an upcoming proposal in my microbio class

finished organizing my lecture notes

finalized our CWATS project plan

curated a perfect playlist on spotify XD

I used Google Calendar for listing all my tasks and upcoming events/webinars. But, I also use Google Spreadsheet for an accurate and complete lists of all the general things that I need to do. Very helpful if you wanna be organized !!

Letters from Watson, catching up

Study in Scarlet part 1: the fun bits - “I am not strong enough yet to stand much noise or excitement.” Famous last words from someone about to spend a significant chunk of his life sharing his space with an insomniac violinist, Watson. - Holmes’ laboratory practice makes me itch, from the standpoint of a modern scientist. Of note regarding his current experiment, he’s keeping the bunsen burners pretty low (lower than I’ve ever routinely needed to, but I only ever use them for microbio stuff) - Watson really appears in their introduction scene to believe he’s signing up to be roommates with someone whose primary occupation is research.

Starting #100daysofproductivity

Right.

I have to stop being a thot (figuratively. Mostly I'm an ass because I don't study) and start taking my life seriously. T minus 60 days and I also must realise I can't study about 10 days in that. So basically 50 days left.

Last 10 days for last revision (consisting of First Aid, PYQ books, Pearls, Zainab Vora pdfs, other notes pdfs and my own handwritten notes)

15 days before that for last minute catching up (rapid revision marrow, everyday 100 Qs custom module, along with mcq videos and integrated videos, revise my handwritten notes and finish all unacademy videos remaining)

Leaves us with the 25 days now - Just try and fucking finish the syllabus! PYQ, marrow videos, notes I read last year, all MER+MKTs, 100 image and other ZV videos, solve solve and write down volatile topic headings and where to read them from, mark Pearls and shorten down notes.

I'm left with
