i’m probably not the right person but fear not i’ll say some bullshit anyway. obligatory preface but i have never taken a graphic design class in my life so take everything i say with a grain of salt, or several, because idk what the fuck i’m doing

a good thing to keep in mind when editing is your focal point—that is to say, whatever it is you wanted people to be focused on. in most cases it’s probably going to be a character, but you might also have text or something else as your focal point. after you’ve picked your focal point, find ways to emphasize it—people usually do this with stroke (outlines) or with things behind the character like splatters, laces, etc. it should be relatively easy to spot a focal point in most people’s edits, even if they didn’t knowingly pick one. if your edits look janky, you probably ended up with too many things your brain is trying to focus on at once—try simplifying it or making one part pop out more than the other! this also comes into play with text. using my pinned as an example:

(still frames so they’re easier to see) you can see that len and rin are the focal points of this image because they’re outlined and because they’re in front of the text. the text is in the back because i deemed it less important than the characters—i mean, you can read my url without the image anyway.

also, sizing is a pretty big thing in composition. your brain looks at the biggest part of an image first—this is the concept behind newspaper headlines! your brain looks at the big text first, then at the smaller. you can see this reflected in my current header (displayed below, in case i change it at a later date) where “canarysage” is bigger than “resources for editors” because I wanted you to see “canarysage” first

how you align your elements is important to. generally speaking, you’ll want to keep everything pretty centered, but, as with anything, you can break this rule for the sake of creativity. when you’re making things like this directory graphic:

it’s cool to do a zig-zag sort of pattern. when making something like this, it’s probably better to do from left to right—that’s the way english-speakers (and speakers of several other languages) read things so that’s how your brain automatically goes. you should also position whatever you want to be read first near the top—in this case, the part that says “one” is in the top left, because that’s where most people’s eyes will go automatically. you can also see the central art is the focal point because of the outlines and the shapes behind it. the buttons are kept separate because they’re a solid color instead of the pattern used on the background shape—and the text stands out because it’s outlined in black, unlike the rest, and it has a pattern. if you use patterned text, outline it so it’s clearly seen and read.

you can also avoid centering things to make your edit more ‘dynamic’ (idk if that’s the right word) like i did with this header:

both eirika and the text are off center, which makes it look more interesting. also, they’re aligned differently—eirika is aligned to the right while the text is aligned to the left. this helps it seem less empty and is more fun visually

if you’re doing an edit with an even number of characters (like a ship edit) you’ll want to keep any one character out of the center, as this makes them the focal point and can kind of shunt the other off to the side. unless you’re doing matching graphics, in which case you should keep one centered, so it’s clear which is the “main” one in each piece of the set.

sizing is also important in terms of literally how small or big your edit is. headers tend to be pretty large (tumblr uses a 16:9 ratio, and twitter uses a 3:1) but things like icons or stamps are pretty small. especially with stamps, you’ll want to make your character pretty large in the stamp so they’re more easily seen. tumblr icons show up on your dashboard as 128x128, which is pretty small, so you’ll want to make sure your icon is easily discernible from that size.

also, i dont think this is necessarily a hard and fast rule, but when you’re making icons and you have to crop out a portion of the character’s head—crop out the top of the head, not the chin. i can’t tell you WHY i think this is a rule or even if anyone agrees with me, but it’s something to keep in mind. here’s an example of the two different kinds of cropping:

since rentry graphics are just sort of dependent on the user, there’s no real hard and fast rules to composing them. just keep in mind whatever your focal point is and try to keep people’s attention on it, whether by adding random shit or outlining or whatever.

same thing with replycons, really. i like to keep my replycons semi-simple, but if you’re doing a collage-type of replycon, it’s better to keep the collage in the background for the most part, except for one or two focal pieces:

you can see that most of the collage pieces are behind rin except for the flower stickers, which are off to the corner so they don’t detract from her. the stripey-line things help a lot, too, as they lead your eye to the main part of the reply icon even without being centered—the main part being the character, of course

with moodboards or stimboards, it’s best to keep your character in the exact center—unless you have two, in which case keep them both in the middle so they’re easier to see. there’s no hard and fast rules with moodboards, but i like to keep images with similar composition near but not directly beside each other

the top middle and bottom middle of this one are both pretty minimalistic, so i kept them adjacent from but not beside each other. as for the rest of it… well i just kind of did whatever

if you’re doing a moodboard or stimboard with two kinds of themes then it’s best to do a checkerboard type of pattern

you can see that here. the pattern is food-art-food-art-ena-art-food-art-food. like a checkerboard, except ena’s in the middle

i’m being so for real i don’t understand composition at all. it’s really best to just do whatever looks best to you personally and see what happens. i hope this is helpful-ish!

Splash screen!

It's a little bumper so the css can load without it scrabling the home page. It looks alright, but to add some more text to the image, I have to make a new one in the death screen generator, which is not ideal.

The home page!

I've changed the middle window so it fits in better with the rest. Not very visually exciting there in terms of color, but it is for now the best look imo. Text there is aligned justified, I've condensed it a bit more and added the randomized quote section underneath it instead of it being a seperate window on the side.

To do list needs an update but is still accurate. The team is still there, but on the other side, I have set the blinkies to be a bit larger. The music player has been removed because I couldn't find a way to add songs to it that weren't included on the source site. Snufkin is here now. The webrings will need some more. Retronaut is there, but not functioning as it should. it just forwards you to random sites in the ring instead of where it should be, but I can't find what exactly I'm doing wrong with the code.

Another thing that is not working on neocities itself is the "last updated" part. For some reason it doesn't display there what it does display on my local html. Maybe a bug at neo.

And icons at the top on the nav par! Adds some more flair to the place. The footer has also received a minor update: it now has a sitemap link instead of another back-to-home url.

About!

I'm thinking of moving the small window with the short info to the right, but it is here for now. Links that are web-building related are on the right, also for my own referencing. The essentials lists on the left are hidden on load, but can be revealed by tapping the puttons. The lists are in tree-view and the window shouldn't expand over the cassette image once the construction sign is removed. Speaking of, the cassette has a lil playlist.

I might expand on the info a bit more, but that is for me to ponder. I liked including links to tumblr, the guestbook, and a button in case anyone wants to link my site on theirs.

Writing!

Hasn't really changed much. I've been looking at moving the sidebar info to be in the main section upon load, but idk if that would just make things more complicated. Right now it loads to an empty section there, stuff appears once you click a button. PDF support is only available once I'm a supporter of neocities, which i do wanna do but isn't a priority atm just for getting this part running. The links to ao3 will do just fine for now.

Journal!

The space for my rambling. It can be browsed by entry through the post-it, and all that seems to be functioning alright. Added a kitty and a sticker for decoration. The Stop Making Sense bumper sticker will now load a local video of the performance, but once again I won't be able to add this to the site until I get a supporter thing going. It plays/pauses on click, hehe.

Basement!

Decided to add a page for it. Basic info, schedule, link to the room, my letterboxd, and an overview of past movies. It's a nice spot on the site that is also the most cramped, but I like how it turned out.

As for the other page: I might be filing it under the writing page as a section, since the only thing here is WvW atm. It's cool that it has it's own thing, but I'm not sure if something that is basically a fanfic warrants such a space. That, or I keep it and drop all my other-media stuff in here so there's more to look at.

I am so very humbled. You have no idea. I'm still learning as a writer, and I am my own worst critic.

I'm sorry I haven't been online to respond to this earlier because I've been really sick with the flu and binge watching Poldark (again).

I've been technically writing fiction since 2015 and it's been a learning curve with each story. For some odd reason, historical eras seem to fit my style in writing. I can do modern but this era I feel like I can sink my teeth into it.

I'm a huge fan of gothic horror/suspense/romance. So, yeah, I guess you can see that in the choices I make.

I must admit I'm not all together happy with the last chapter of BBNB, I might want to change some things in that chapter before moving on (maybe because it might meld into the next chapter better? idk).

Even though I have approximately 5-6 chapters (depending on how big the chapters get, I'm terrible about posting novel-length chapters) left in Bend, it should be an emotional rollercoaster. There are soooo many things I have left to run with before it ends.

As of the lastest chapter, I'm deviating from Jane Eyre a bit, while still holding onto certain plot-points for context but I want to play more with the Regency Arcane/Silco's world.

I do have other ideas for Silco stories I want to write. One will deal with a younger, hot-head SIlco. Another I'm tempted to play with a Roaring 20's Underground.

Then I have a story that I'm developing into an original gothic novel. I have maybe too much on my plate. LOL

It's moments like this when I wish I didn't have to 'work' a regular job to pay the bills because I would literally write all day, every day.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate you sending me this. It really does brighten my day. That may sound cliche, but it does. I admit I don't have the greatest self-esteem, but I'm working on it.

That someone likes something I've written that much to comment at all and tell me they're re-reading it... my heart is going to explode.

I am working on both Regency Silco stories. When my head doesn't feel like a fog-horn inside of a 100lb bowling ball, I should be in a better space to be creative. It's zapped when you feel exhausted. Working 60hr weeks lately probably hasn't helped my health any.

just in case anyone else is getting these messages, i was going to send money because i typically like to assume good intentions and i would rather pay the occasional scammer than withhold money that i can survive without from people who need it, but i do try to do my due dilligence since i don't want to spread misinformation or cause anyone who follows me to donate to a scam, and this became suspicious very quickly

at first i was inclined to believe it because:

like i said i try to assume people are telling the truth

having a url related to artemis is a very tumblr(tm) thing to have

this person has their twitter linked in their bio, which seemed like a bold move if they're a scammer

the phone number of the vet office is linked in the post

but i noticed a couple things that made me suspicious:

the tumblr was made this month

the content on the tumblr looks very much like someone just searched "artemis" on tumblr and reblogged a bunch of random posts

i searched on twitter using the "from:[username]" method just plugging in their twitter handle and searching words like "cat", "vet", "binx", etc., and there was no mention of anything related to this post (not sure if the twitter is just some rando that they're pretending is their twitter, or if it's actually the scammer. it might be someone they just based the tumblr off of tbh)

this one i'm not sure about, but when i put the paypal address into paypal, it says that they will receive my donation in the form of philippine pesos/pisos(?). i don't know much about like. how paypal works/how money works lmao, so idk if there's a scenario where maybe the paypal belongs to, say, a family member who has a bank account in the philippines but is in the US or something? but it gave me pause when taking into account the other potentially suspicious stuff given that the vet is supposedly in michigan

so anyway i ended up reverse image searching the vet bill since there's plenty of vet bills if you just image search "photo of vet bill" and it turns out this scammer has used the same story recently with a different paypal (linking to some random person's blog, so if this link breaks bc they changed their url/deleted the post sorry haha)

they use one of two paypal addresses: [email protected] [email protected]

if you search either of those paypal's on tumblr, you can see other people calling them out for scamming

some light existential under the cut

last month i was so high and like i dont even remember what this memory was about at this point but i experienced something or other and then was suddenly made very aware of my brain actively changing my memory of what i experienced immediately after. Like i was fully aware that the memory of it that stuck was actually not what really happened, i just couldn't remember what did really happen, because my brain rewrote it in noticeably fast real time.

And it just made me realize how imperfect brains are and human memory is shit and is always changing what really happened and literally rewriting memories sometimes!!

and anyway just now because of that other post i was thinking about how i remembered when i was little like 4 i saw a lizard in the bathtub while i was in it and i got so scared and anyway the memory of it ive always had was it was really fucked up and disturbing looking. And i just suddenly was made aware with that last post of, like.. the distinct linear progression that mustve happened every time i recalled the mental image of that lizard, the memory got a little bit more corrupted and incorrect, so like. Ok this is fucking complicated hang on

It feels like, i remember that the way i remembered it looking when i was a teenager, is the same way i remember it looking when i think about it now, like... it feels like memory would be like opening an old png file on an old computer folder that hasnt been accessed in a long time but is still exactly the same unchanged file. but memory is actually more like an image file hosted on a webpage: in theory you might think it'd be exactly the same (because the url hasn't changed any), but in reality, the actual source image could've been updated at some point and you'd have no way to access the old version of that file, unless you found a cached version of it (aka describing your memories as you remember them in a tangible, unchanging way, like writing them down) or a screenshot of the old version (verbally describing them to (or just experiencing it in the first place with) another person, but you wouldn't actually have any way of knowing for sure that it hasn't been altered since the last time you saw it*

And its just like. Human memory is literally so fucked up and imperfect and scary IDK i know none of this makes sense im just saying fucking words right now. sorry

what you said about tumblr being an echo chamber is real. “dtblr” was a group (or several groups) of friends, and when one or two decides to leave and change urls and layouts and declare dream an awful person, they all do it. they don’t like to think about the fact that just because their behaviour, in their minds, is “correct”, doesnt make it any less hive mind behaviour. imo, the most “correct” stance anyone can take in this situation is to be calm, rational, and survey the evidence. knee jerk reactions are to be expected, but people should not have acted on them.

and if it turns out this whole thing was blown out of proportion and dream is innocent? it wont matter, they publicly decided he was a weirdo freak and they’re going to have to stick by that statement in any way they can. they’ll continue to say “him messaging a fan makes him a creep idc about anything else” fine, whatever, people can think that. but ccs message fans all the time Lol so i mean. yeah idk these people made their beds and they can lie in them

i’m gonna steal what i said on priv again but— i LOVE dtblr and valued being in it so much, and no matter what i think i always will. but… yeah, it was insanely cliquey, and i think ex-members arguing that it wasn’t is a little obtuse. and i’ll admit, once i was pretty well-established i Liked that it was hard to find and harder to get into! it made everything feel special and more close-knit than other subblrs. but you can have that feeling and still acknowledge that it was a clique heavily influenced by a couple big blogs. and once the news broke, and the blogs that were viewed as the spokespeople of the fandom started jumping ship and giving very concrete inflammatory statements as they left, it was absolutely a ripple effect of opinion. and because dtblr was so heavily built on friendship (that sounds corny but you know what i mean), even people who didn’t necessarily share that opinion started drifting because if you’re the only one still here, what’s the point? it was a bunch of dominos and while they might have fallen either way, it certainly wasn’t helped by most of the chain being a circle

although it’s worth noting that i have seen a lot of ex-members say the reason they left wasn’t the accusations themselves, but more so that their reaction made them realize how parasocial and “in too deep” they had gotten. and i think that’s totally fair! it’s certainly been a wake up call for a lot of people (hopefully dream too) and in the end that’s a good thing. i’m inclined to disagree a bit with your last point, though— i think if it ends up that he’s innocent, quite a few people will walk it back and end up rejoining the fandom in some capacity, though maybe not as intensely. i’ve seen it happen time and time again with dream incidents: most people end up regretting their kneejerk reactions, and i think they should be given grace to decide they were wrong

#maybe this will be different because of how Big it was #it’s true that nothing before this had basically shut down the fandom #but only time will tell #bella answers #anon #dream.situation
