october 2022

always comforted by a long october, each week a month, rendering the first unrecognizable from the last. a lot of prep for mostly silence, not a picture taken of the orange trees next to the light clouds hanging over the smooth bike lanes. i finally got to see stereolab, got to get back to asheville, back to sally. electrically possessed. embracing how casual everything is right now, nothing is heavy, all thoughts have an outlet that opens into the moss, the broken fence, the air vent that cools my steering wheel. i just sit in the back patio at foxy loxy, the left corner, into the early night, not aiming to grasp at anything anymore.

the last week overpowered the whole month, another return to la roux, this time more comfortable and enlivening than the last. all consuming pop melodies, the subtleties of coming out, wanting to be seen, wanting to keep things hidden. debating a separate post to elaborate on this one, if it ever comes about, you can find it here.

the earlier half of the month was sunk in a resurgence of last fall's music--more stereolab, salon music, pine*am. late afternoon reference desk music, weeding books and tshirts and unpacking boxes that had been taped shut since march 2020. still listening to why by donna regina and most of the disappointment by evening lights (specifically make yours like mine and pillow-soft landing). these are wrapped around the pnw, early september, the 5am drive to the airport.

andy shauf stuck around too, green glass and wicked and wild. palatable indie pop with words revolving around the euphoria of a lost love that's always lingering back in a place you can't bring yourself to return, everything feels better when i'm thumbing through the past. not entirely relevant at the moment, but a feeling that's always welcome, almost always against my best judgement.

sweets by jim james is delicious and the 2022 companion to the light that springlike by hiroshi fujiwara draped over me this time last year. tomato flower crafted my song of the year (red machine, obviously) and another great EP i'll be listening to to see this year through. taking my time, i always will.

Josh and Donna Headcanons That are 100% Fact Because I Said So

For the period of time that they’re apart, Josh finds what he misses most is eating lunch together. When they’re in the Santos White House, they make sure to share their meals as often as they can

Donna spent a lot of nights at Josh’s apartment when he was recovering after Roslyn. She took a liking to sleeping in his sweaters. He liked it too. Neither of them said anything

They almost got together the night of Bartlet’s second Inauguration, but knew they couldn’t because of the scandal it would cause. Josh started to tell Donna he loved her, but she stopped him and just said “I know. Me too.”

Donna never gets rid of the Skii book

Josh never deletes the emails from Gaza

They talk about their longtime feelings and establish that this is long term on that first vacation. The topic of marriage comes up.

Josh suggests “eloping” right then and getting married the next day

Donna says no, because she’s loved him for so long, and she wants to stand up and tell the whole world how much she loves him

Even though she’d marry him in a Broom Closet if she had to

About a year into the Santos administration, he tells her that they have to go to New Hampshire to attend a fundraising dinner on the President and First Lady’s behalf

When they get there, he instead takes her to the building that was the original Manchester office where they met, and that’s where he proposes

They have a White House wedding, at Santos’ insistence

Bartlet officiates

They get married in April, so then their anniversary actually is in April

But Josh still sends flowers to her office in February and April every year

The stories Josh told Jack Reese always remain his favorite stories about Donna, and he reminds her of this fact often

They are each other’s emergency contacts while working in the Bartlet White House

Josh is the first to suggest starting a family, after Donna has a pregnancy scare

They have two children: Joanie and Leo

The kids call Bartlet “Grandpa Jed”

One night, Donna gets into a minor car accident. On the way to pick her up at the hospital, Josh runs every red light

When they get home and she’s relaxing on the couch, he brings her a beer

Over the years, they’re both woken up by a lot of nightmares. But they come to recognize each other’s sleep patterns so well that the other doesn’t need to be woken to notice, and is always right there to hold and comfort them.

Donna has nightmares about Roslyn

Josh has nightmares about Gaza

She still calls him Pumpkin Patch

He’s still the only one who calls her Donnatella, and does it often.

They’re a very affectionate couple

They make it a rule to never go to bed, or leave each other, mad.

And they make it their goal to love each other always, and to do whatever they can to make up for lost time
