1. But instead, almost too fast for me to catch it, Luke spun on his heels and nabbed something out of the air with his gloved hand—something so small I could barely see it. After examining what was between his fingers for a moment, he looked up at me with a smile brighter than the sun reflecting off the ice outside.

“Glacier fly!” he yelled over the noise, holding his palm open toward me. I looked down into his hand. Sure enough, there was a tiny little ice-looking bug sitting there calmly.

I didn’t really know what to say. I decided on “Looks like it.”

Luke nodded with all the seriousness in the galaxy. “I heard the fork-nosed ice worms native to the area used to live symbiotically with the glacier flies, before they all went extinct. Must have been a sight to see!” Suddenly, the laser cutter shut down, leaving a ringing silence in its wake. Into the emptiness, Luke said quietly, “Can you imagine?”

I blinked at him. “No.” Then I stuck out my hand to match his. “Sergeant Reyé Hollis, Alliance Special Forces. I’m to familiarize you with Echo Base.”

Luke looked at my hand, just for a second, before gently shaking his glacier fly free. He gripped my hand with a surprising strength and that same big smile. “Luke Skywalker. I’m here to help!”

2. I couldn’t exactly explain all that to my shockingly grumpy new base buddy, Reyé—Sergeant Hollis—as he marched me through the icy halls of Echo Base shortly after meeting, though, so I focused on the moment at hand. I thought the glacier fly was really neat. He, apparently, did not.

3. “Where are you from, Sergeant?” I asked pleasantly, trying to break the silence in a way that wouldn’t make either of us feel too awkward. We’d be spending a lot of time together down here; we might as well get to know each other.

He looked sidelong at me through thick dark lashes. “What, it’s not obvious to you?”

“Well, I don’t like to do that uninvited,” I answered. “But if you’re asking …”

I paused in the middle of the hall. It took Reyé a couple of steps before he realized I was no longer beside him, and he came to an abrupt halt. As he turned, I closed my eyes. Deep breaths. Wind over sand. Reaching out—I saw…and I felt …

“Ah!” My eyes flew open. “So much water, and so green. Your home is beautiful.”

Reyé just stared at me. Really? I was sure I’d gotten it right….

“I meant my name,” he finally answered, his face inscrutable. “The é at the end of my name. ’S a Naboo thing. People sometimes know what planet I’m from, because of that.”

I felt my face going red. “Right,” I nodded, rushing to catch up with him as he started off with his long stride again. “Naboo. I’ve heard of that. For sure.”
