I feel like I learned a lot from the pile of Theaster Gates interviews, talks, and articles I just went through. Mostly it's about his experience as a Black potter, and his engagement with Japanese pottery traditions. Also the work of Dave Drake, a 19th c potter who incised his name and poems on the pots he made while and after being enslaved in South Carolina. Making something good from complicated things is a useful skill. Gates just opened an exhibition at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo.

fuck I NEED to talk about mingei/民芸
So the concept is coined in the 1920's by Yanagi Muneyoshi, a mix of 民衆, minshû (common people) and 工芸, kôgei (craft): the closest translation would be something along "folk art".
The idea is pretty simple: seeing art in the "simple" crafts that isn't necessarily celebrated in museums, and most importantly, isn't unique. Something that is reproductible not necessarily because it's easy to do (even though it will often be, more than say the Mona Lisa), but because it is the result of local artcraft, and can be widely produced for all people to have and enjoy. It has to be simple, rely on local traditions, anonymous or not necessarily made by a renown person.
So of course with a modern viewpoint, this is just capitalism with an extra step, and also the guy who came up with the word for the concept also said some weird shits about the crafts of Korean people having an inherent sadness despite being openly against Japanese colonisation of the peninsula so keep in mind there's always a stain of good ol' 20's nationalism in a lot of thought movements of the time in Japan.
But I think that removed from capitalism and the weird celebration of Japanese people as a totally unique culture that often uses this movement as an argument, this idea is actually...kind of beautiful? Art in your kitchen. Celebration of the anonymous work of a potter, of a tailor who never strived for recognition, for the tradition of little paper dolls people for a specific area do in a specific way. While I know that "widely produced" isn't too viable morally, I still think that some amount of distribution would add to the beauty of it. I personally think that letting many people have beautiful objects in their home is a noble goal, as long as you don't exploit people for it. This is just nice to think of
