Secret Projekt 3: "Your Name" the book

This book fully broke me, it's an old meme that Brandon Sanderson cannot write a romance to save his life, (see Mistborn eras 1 and 2), but good lord he has improved a lot since then. Tress and the Emerald Sea was obviously a romance, but it felt more like a fairy tail that someone would tell you you on a roadtrip. There was some romance in Frugal Wizard but that was barely a factor and did feel more like in movies when the main character meet the Girl Character(TM).

But Yumi and Painter hgggggh. They make me deranged, the awkwardness, the bond slowly forming, they are so cute i am going to dieeee.

5. what inspires you to write?

I am going to try to walk the line between sentiment and insanity and probably will touch both. I read Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn (Era 1) series when I was younger, and was completely captivated by it. I think I read the entire series five times in the span of four years. Ever since I've been trying to write. I love the works of Neil Gaiman, Sanderson, and Stieg Larsson (yes that one). Up until this year, I hadn't written fan fiction in four years due to burnout. It was really a lot of the writers in the Warrior Nun fandom that inspired me to get back into it. I really credit Casper, Bee, Storms and the whole lot of them with inspiring me to get back at it.

finished Rythym of War!! many rambly thoughts below

this was def Navani and Venli's book. immediately just before this book, i also read all of oathbringer, so not having the regular Dalinar povs felt like the homer-simpson-disappearing-into-a-bush meme.

I knew navani was going to become a bondsmith too! i knew it!! it was pretty nice that all the events in urithiriu resolved without their armies needing to come back and help. and kaladin finally said the fourth ideal!! it was a long time coming

even before the end of the book when odium and dalinar finalized the contract, i knew something had to go wrong because there's still 6 books in this series left.

it's still so funny to me that we get to see 2 very different ways an encounter with hoid at a perpendicularity can go (especially if your name starts with a K). option 1, a story and a meal. option 2, get your ass beat

the adolin and maya stuff was good. i figured maya would end up doing something (even if i wasn't sure what that something was) by the end of the trial. adolin was already able to summon her faster by the end of oathbringer, so i wonder if there will be more changes to how she behaves as a "dead" shardblade

having read most of the cosmere stuff already, it was cool to make all the connections to previous books and knowing (in general) how investiture & connection work.

vasher & hoid using breaths, Nightblood and vasher sucking the color out of things, hoid's smoke storytelling (it was in oathbringer too) -> Warbreaker

the ire and their tech and the seon (as soon as it was shown faces appeared, i knew it was a seon) -> Elantris

i'm pretty sure Sazed/Harmony was writing to hoid during part 2, kelsier and the ghostbloods -> Mistborn

i read yumi & the nightmare painter before row, but design showing up in both books

other random thoughts:

i hadn't really thought about it before, but Wax's coinshot powers (the lines that he can see from him to the metal) sounds a lot like how dalinar was seeing the Connection between people

i liked that the radiants powers being partially taken away means they had to get more creative with what was left, like with how kaladin was forced to practice adhesion. its a little silly, but my favorite marvel movie is iron man 3, mostly for the scene where tony uses stuff he got from the hardware store for the final fight, because he's forced to rely on his ingenuity and creativity under limited resources

i wonder when tress happens in the overall timeline. i havent seen hoid using the dor, but that doesn't he mean he doesn't have it. yumi & painter seems to be after the way of kings series (or maybe the time skip?)

the obvious timeline connections i can think of (-> = 'before'):

elantris, warbreaker, the emperor's soul, 1st mistborn trilogy -> way of kings

way of kings -> yumi & painter (bc design is present in sp3)

2nd mistborn era -> tress (bc the kandra are free to move)

emperor's soul -> 2nd mistborn era (but probably not by much, it depends on how old shai is)

i'm not sure when the 2nd mistborn era and way of kings happen in relation to each other. hoid was on scadrial for mistborn, but i don't think he had design yet

Imagery of Steel Inquisitors

[spoilers for Mistborn Era 1, I suppose] Recently finished era 1 of Mistborn last summer (yet to start era 2, trying to pace myself through the sanderson-verse/cosmere thing????) and I just wanna talk about my thoughts behind how characters looked and specifically changed through the story. Specifically, Marsh

Marsh, being Kelsier’s brother, made me reckon they’d be similar. I had in my mind that he was a brunette to Kelsier’s dirty-blonde, mainly an auburn, reddish-brown shade. In terms of build I imagine he’s built well, but not super buff or anything

This of course changed when he became a Steel Inquisitor. I imagined/headcanon'ed these fucking monsters being built like a 40k Space Marine. Huge as hell, almost engorged with muscle in a way that gives them the build of an un-plugged fridge. Dwarfing characters like 5-foot-weighs-100-lbs-soaking-wet Vin and a great deal few heads taller than characters like Ham (HC'd as tall and built like a strongman) and Sazed (HC'd as tall, but more willowy/lanky). At the end of The Final Empire Marsh'd be bald, I HC'd him sporting a bit of short hair growth in Well of Ascension, but I couldn't see him as sporting anything else than wearing a wild chestnut-brown mowhawk and short beard in Hero of Ages. I don't know why. I just did and it was great?

I was advised to avoid fanart for the books until after I read them by a friend (Wise friend, she is). That's when I saw that most depictions are much different than what I headcanoned. Outfits, spikes, and tattoos were good but it was the size that was the most different. They were jacked, ofc, but they weren't as monstrously massive as I had imagined.

I feel like the imagery I imagined... idk, fit more? Mostly on a subtle-body-horror thing going on with Mistborn era 1 and the logic behind some of their powers

IMO, some of the creatures in era 1 are ghoulishly scary. You can see bones of the corpse-eating mistwraiths through their skin. Similarly, Kandra eat people, wear their skins, and (when not wearing people bodies) wear bodies of stone and crystal. Koloss. GOOD LORD THE HULK SMURFS. The baby guys have flabby blue skin that tears and bleeds as they get bigger. And they're all creatures made with Hemalurgy. Steel Inquisitors make due in the body horror with the whole spikes thing, but them being the size of the average dude is not enough. I Need Them to be huuuuuge.

Plus, their immense strength comes from a combo of burning pewter and using the stored strength from feruchemy, right? Specifically with Feruchemy, we see in tFE that when Sazed taps into strength he gets jacked as well. I think hes described as growing taller due to it, but I don't have the books with me to double check. Either way, if they're constantly burning MAD GAINZ MAGIC™, I'd imagine they're roided out the wazzoo

I need more art of Steel Inquisitors to make them MONSTERS. The offical art and fan-art thats out there is (Chef's Kiss) beutiful, but I'd love to see this kind of take on steel inquisitors
