i did very much love the last episode of mp100 but i do want to encourage everyone who only watched the anime to read the manga - at least for chapter 100 - because whilst the changes they made weren’t bad they were very much different and reigen’s part in particular really stood out for me. 

this page, for one... taking his shoes off feels a lot more... idk, chaotic in the anime? just sorta arbitrary? whereas the manga definitely frames it as a sort of deliberate acceptance that he very well could die doing this, and he’s accepting that. as much as i can see why they dialled back reigen’s fear, i do sort of miss it - the mix of fear and his determination to save mob anyway is important to me.

Also - whilst Reigen gets absolutely clattered in both versions, in the manga it comes across like it’s just the debris and tornado incidentally giving him a hard time and THIS is the first time where Mob clearly uses his powers directly against him. Which I think hits harder too. 

Don’t get me wrong - I do like how the anime did this scene... although 99 did make it a little long & “epic” rather than desperate so maybe I also didn’t like it alsdjff I have confusing feelings.

So Reigen put his hand on the poster after running from the people, right? I think that's a strong hint for when he was hypnotized! But do you think he's just playing along? Could he be pushing Mob to do this by himself? What do you think?? Why does this episode hurt so much???

I... I actually didn't realize that might be when he got hypnotized!! I kept my eyes peeled for a hint during my second watchthrough, but I ended up figuring that he might just have "basked" in the hypnotism wave across the city long enough that it affected him, even without a proper "trigger". I just thought the framing of the moment where he hits the poster was really epic, BONES are just insanely good at what they do :')

I definitely think Reigen's under control for real though. The way he fell under was so subtle, and the way he expresses himself even while hypnotized is still so very Reigen-like... but I think poor Mob is gonna be on his own for a bit there. (Assuming Teru eventually got overwhelmed too ;w;)

This episode hurts so much because ONE is an amazing writer and BONES is as much of an incredible studio ♥ can't wait to get hurt even more with ep5 :D

Acknowledging Some Uncomfortable Truths in the MP100 Canon

I wanted to make this for two reasons: 1) I often see fanfictions attempt to gloss over certain things that made MP100 so compelling, which are the character flaws that are designed to make a character more real but, as a consequence, more unlikeable, which dissuades a lot of writers from ever acknowledging them. These writers need to recognize that these are core elements of these characters and they should be bold in exposing these flaws in their stories. And 2) Because these are uncomfortable truths, I am often times unwilling to acknowledge them, so I figured writing them down would help me come to terms with their (vital) existence in ONE’s story. -

1) Reigen is (not always) a good person.

This one has been talked to the ground, so I won’t spend too much time on it, but it’s one of the most common issues I see glossed over in fanfiction. Reigen has pointedly decided to take advantage of people’s misfortunes and/or delusions by the mere act of lying about being a psychic and then taking money from them when they are satisfied with his advice or bullshit actions. Yes, he does help them, and yes, he does give them good advice that can change their life for the better. But, I see people try to justify this immoral behavior because the results are still beneficial for both of them, but they never acknowledge the fact that Reigen makes the conscious decision on a day to day basis to con people, to lie to them, and to scam them for money or goods. 

Reigen has also refused to pay for a taxi service and scared the shit out of the taxi driver in the process, has asked for 30% of a man’s farming income as payment for an exorcism that he himself won’t even do, and, most obvious of them all, HAS BEEN USING A CHILD FOR 4 YEARS AS HIS PRIMARY INCOME-GETTER, REQUIRING HIM TO DO ALL LEGITIMATE EXORCISMS, SCAMMING HIM ALONG THE WAY BY LYING TO HIS FACE EVERYDAY THAT HE IS WHAT HE ISN’T, AND PAYS MOB VERY LITTLE AS COMPENSATION.

So, yes. Not always a good person.

2) Mob technically “broke the rule” in Mogami-land.

The rule being, “Don’t use your powers on another person.” By the end of those six months in Mogami-land, Mob finally began to agree, at least somewhat, with Mogami, and finally used his powers against Minori and her thugs. 

This means that Mogami had already gotten through to Mob. It wasn’t a matter of Dimple getting there “just in time.” Dimple actually got there a little late. Mob had already snapped. Dimple just got there before he went too far.

3) What happened in Seperation arc, Reigen deserved.

Or, he at least earned it. This ties into the first uncomfortable truth, but Separation arc is the real-world example of “You reap what you sow.” Reigen’s constant lies, constant scamming, finally boiled up to an uncontainable amount and reached a point to where Reigen couldn’t hide the damages anymore. 

Let’s remove ourselves from Mob’s point of view, where we see Reigen as a core part of Mob’s moral structure and conviction, a supportive adult who constantly gives Mob advice and comfort, and what we’re left with is a conman who has used people. In the public’s eyes, he’s the scum of the earth. The television exposure was something he earned. He agreed to go it. He bit off more than he could chew, and he now has to live with the consequences. 

4) Reigen has been and will continue to be a compulsive liar for a very, very long time.

Reigen cannot seem to not lie. Reigen continued to lie during the press conference, even though he was very close to admitting it. Reigen continued to lie to clients about his abilities, and he even continued to lie to Mob for a length of time.

(Manga spoilers) Even after Reigen finally admitted to Mob that he never had powers, he continued to act as though he was. He kept Spirits and Such open, he continued to refer to himself as a psychic, and he even during the REIGEN manga, he lived on that lie.

Reigen can’t seem to stop himself from lying. Perhaps it’s part of his nature, and so that’s why he decided to become such a con man, but I can absolutely say for certain that this compulsion won’t leave him for a while, and this has a lot of potentials to damage certain relationships. (*cough* there’s some material for ya, fanfiction writers *cough)

Holy... hell

I was so ready for the fire discovery scene to have so much less impact than in the manga - Bones often fails to capture certain things that ONE does with black & white contrast that give his scenes so much impact. This particular comparison comes to mind: 

But... the way they did this scene... jesus christ I’m fucking shaking. The slowing of the music as the door opens. The screechy strings. The desperation in Dimple’s voice. The flashing red of Mob’s pupils, the percentage flying past 100% and up and up and up, his family’s laughing faces, and, and then THIS:

GODDAMN Bones. This execution!!!!!!!! With the addition of the perfectly placed & timed music, this hit me just about as hard as the manga, even though I knew what was coming. And what a place to leave it & the anime-onlies waiting for A WHOLE WEEk, I’m absolutely floored
