MSA: Mushi sealed in Vivi ficlet

I have no idea where this was going but it's based on @answrs ‘s "shit's fucked AU' plot-shell thing from a few weeks back. So go read that if you want better context.

It was supposed to end with Mushi sealing herself back up and leaving Mystery alone to deal with the fallout of the cave. But I ended up making her more sympathetic so a guess she would probably stick around and try to help maybe. Figured I’d post it now I’ve had some time to go back and edit stuff.

Summary: It’s the cave but Vivi gets possessed and Mushi is there as well.

Mushi is shocked from her stasis to the sound of mental alarms ringing as the wards, carefully constructed it protect her host’s mind, crack.

A mental attack? For where? Who would dare?

The seal holding her in place shatters like glass, its built-in fail-safe releasing her to defend her bloodline. The invading threat has wormed its way downward, sinking in deep, hooking itself onto the human soul to which Mushi's own essence is tethered.

Angry, she lashes out at the poisonous creature, slicing through its connection, forcing it to shy away least it be shred to ribbon. It takes a few more targeted strikes before she has it in full retreat. Around her is the sensation of fear and apprehension. The fear is from her host, panicked and confused, and the apprehension is from the invader, surprised and equally irritated to have its plan foiled.

/Well, this is unexpected./ It voices, skittering away, attempting to hide. /I don't suppose you would consider a timeshare arrangement?/

/You dare intrude here./ She snarls, following, chasing it back to the point of infection. As she goes, she increases her control, wrapping herself carefully around the human girl- bundling her up to protect her from further harm.

Suddenly, there is light, and she can see, hear, touch and smell. The area is cold stone. She is balanced on a rock shelf with a steep drop on either side. She slips forward, feeling out the body that is not hers. Before her stands a familiar seven tailed kitsune, and it has been a day and an age since they parted. Her relief at seeing him after, what she assumes to be, several centuries, is tempered by the circumstances. Now is not the time for reunions. The evil, though contained to her right arm, is still very much present. Mushi may have successfully forced it away from her host's fragile soul and quarantined her mind, but it remains too strong to simply banish without a proper ritual. For the first time in a long while, she draws on her connect to divine power. A cold frost gathers over the infected arm, hardening till its surface is coated in a layer of thick ice.

/NO!/ She hears the invader screech but pays it no mind, continuing with a grim determination until it falls into a silent stasis. The arm goes completely numb, and she breathes out in a long exhale. This temporary seal would hold for the time being. Her exhale mists in the ethereal chill now surrounding her.

"It has been too long, my old friend. Now, tell me what folly has led to my premature awakening."

She doesn’t get a response because her Kitsune leaps off the rock shelf in a bust of bright red which carries him down among the many tall stone spikes dotting the cave floor. Perplexed and realizing that perhaps the danger has not entirely passed, Mushi summons her blade to her remaining hand. It will be tricky balancing and fighting with one arm encased in heavy ice, but she would be a poor example of a swordswoman if she let it slow her down. For a moment, she examines the drop, contemplating whether she should follow and jump. Maybe, if this were her own body, hardened from years of training, she would make the jump and channel ice to maneuver more safely. Unfortunately, this body is soft and unused to such magic, so she quickly decides to find an alternate route.

It takes her longer than she would like, as she is forced to backtrack up a stone tunnel, searching for a separate entrance, but, eventually, she makes it to the stone floor. What she sees is no danger, but two humans dressed in brightly coloured clothing. The one with blond hair is obviously dead and the other, purple one, is unconscious. Uncertain, she watches, scanning the area for threats. After several seconds she concludes that they are alone. Mushi moves closer, examining the two humans’ more thoroughly. The cause of the blond one’s death was most likely partial impalement on the stone spikes. Not a quick death by any measure. It is also not the result of any attack. She lets her sword turn to mist and ice crystals which scatter and hang in the air, catching the red light.

Slowly, she approaches, reaching to place a hand against her friends’ shoulder. It is a gesture intended to comfort and never had she imagined using it for him who's poor opinion of humans had remained constant even after several decades of their friendship. It appears that much has changed during her rest. Silently, she waits for him to mourn.

/Vivi? Is she okay?/ He speaks after his period of silence, voice subdued and pained. No indicators of respect or deferral to what was definitely one of her direct descendants. No, there is only worry and concern. Odd. Things really have changed.

"I assume Vivi is one," She motions to herself, keeping her surprise contained. A nod of confirmation.

"She is well. In shock, but not in any danger. I have put her to sleep for the time being. When she is no longer in danger, I shall relinquish control."

She looks to the two humans again, “I am sorry that I did not awaken sooner. Perhaps I could have been of greater use.” Her condolences are met with more silence. Mushi wants to mention that they should attend to the exorcism of her arm post-hast but holds on account of how heartbroken the other looks. They still have a little time. She releases a sigh. What has she gotten herself into?

Post Zombie Apocalypse MSA AU(?)

Been re-reading my copy of “The Zombie Survival Guide” by Max Brooks and playing ‘Ghost’ and ‘Hellbent’ on repeat, so this idea popped into my head. Just jotting down ideas so I can figure out how to write this, but feel free to add your own thoughts if you have any.

*The signs have been there for months, a mysterious illness with no known cure, but everyone is passing it off as a new strain of the flu or something similar.

*Vivi is immediately suspicious and wants to scope out the infected areas. The only reason she doesn’t is because Arthur and Lewis convince her otherwise. They don’t have the money to head out at the moment and wouldn’t it be a good idea to research it a little before running off?

*Another case pops up, something big, that completely distracts Vivi from the issue. Lewis and Arthur are relieved.

*(I’m imagining this happening before Ghost, possibly to never happen in exchange for all this.)

*Then some government people show up. Vivi is determined to figure out the real link between them and whatever ‘illness’ is going on.

*They’re doing mandatory health evaluations, claiming to be looking for the ‘illness’. Everyone’s tests come back clean, but for some reason they take a few people: Lewis is included.

*He doesn’t really get to say goodbye, he manages to get a text out to Arthur and Vivi to let them know he’s leaving, but nothing else comes up. The Peppers remain though, for whatever reason.

*Vivi gets more suspicious and sneaks out to investigate new areas claiming to have the illness. Arthur tags along, but something stops him a lot of the time (maybe Uncle Lance getting worried? I’m not sure, haven’t fleshed this out quite yet)

*Eventually, everyone begins to leave their little town, either heading north where people claim that it’s too cold for the ‘illness’ to survive or out to the country, where it seems to be less prominent. The Yukinos are among the first to move away.

*Vivi promises to write as often as she can and call whenever she has service. She promises to be careful and send back her findings to Arthur. (Maybe even leaves Mystery with him until her family comes back? Or he gets forgotten in the commotion, leaving him with Arthur till the Yukinos come back?)

*He gets a few updates, but she stops replying after a week or two. Arthur gets even more worried.

*Eventually, almost everyone is gone. Arthur, Lance, The Peppers, and a few stragglers are all that’s left behind.

*One morning, Lance leaves Arthur behind, telling him to ‘Not open the door for anyone’ and ‘To be ready to leave at a moment’s notice’. He figures they’re going to be heading north too.

*Lance doesn’t return though. Arthur is alone till someone begins pounding away at the front door.

*Whatever is going on, Arthur is sure it’s something supernatural at this point. He knows Lance said to not answer the door, but he wants to know what’s going on.

*He makes sure to grab Lance’s shotgun first. Something tells him he’s going to need it.

*Opens the door and, of course, it’s a zombie. Arthur freaks, barely manages to avoid getting bitten, and accidentally manages to blow the thing’s head off.

*Cue the complete and utter panic over killing someone, even though they had been trying to bite his face off. Mystery (if he’s there) tries to comfort him without revealing himself before dragging Arthur to the van. He knows they can’t stay and wait.

*Arthur doesn’t need to be told twice. They head to town, hoping that someone can tell them what’s going on. Maybe even find Uncle Lance.

*What they find is a completely abandoned town. The few stragglers are nowhere to be seen. No signs of life till they reach Pepper Paradiso. (Maybe the girls are screaming?)

*Arthur and Mystery rush in, Arthur in order to help his missing best friend’s family, Mystery to make sure he doesn’t get eaten alive.

*Find Mr. and Mrs. Pepper either dead or already reanimated, girls trapped in a corner while zombies close in on them.

*Cue big brother Arthur coming in and saving them, despite all his fears.

*He sends them to the van with Mystery while he takes care of Mr. and Mrs. Pepper. He tries to honor their traditions, remembering the one funeral he went with Lewis for one of their family members. It isn’t perfect, but he’s sure Lewis would have appreciated it.

*He marks their graves so, if they ever come back, the girls can at least visit. Lewis too if he comes back. A note is left for him to find, explaining what happened and where they’re heading.

*(He has not clue where they're heading. All he knows to do is head to the East/West coast. Maybe his radio picked up on a message before everything cut out?)

*They head out, Arthur with only two things on his mind: get the girls to safety and find his missing family (A.K.A Uncle Lance, Lewis, and Vivi)

Not really sure what would happen from here. I was thinking maybe Arthur loses his arm protecting the girls? Mystery revealing himself in order to save the entire group? I’ll figure it out eventually.

CORONAVIRUS – Prévention et contrôle des infections : Le Msas annonce l’élaboration d’un plan d’appui pour le Magal

Les services du ministère de la Santé ont publié le 57ème numéro du rapport sur le coronavirus au Sénégal. Le document confirme la tendance baissière du nombre de cas confirmés et annonce la poursuite des actions menées jusque-là pour lutter contre cette maladie. Il est également prévu «l’élaboration d’un plan d’appui à la région médicale de Diourbel en vue du grand Magal de Touba».

Dans le rapport 57 de la situation de la pandémie du coronavirus au Sénégal, le ministère de la Santé et de l’action sociale annonce, dans la rubrique prévention et contrôle des infections, «l’élaboration d’un plan d’appui à la région médicale de Diourbel en vue du grand Magal de Touba». Dans ce bilan, il est confirmé la tendance baissière des cas positifs qui justifie d’ailleurs, comme souligné dans le document, le renforcement des actions menées jusque-là. Ainsi, le rapport du ministère de la Santé informe de la «poursuite des activités de désinfection/décontamination des domiciles des cas et des corps sans vie», «l’encadrement des activités d’inhumation des décès Covid+». Dans la même dynamique, il est prévu, dans le volet «Communication sur les risques et engagement communautaire (Crec)», la « revue intra action des activités de communication sur le Covid-19, la revue des activités de communication de la région de Thiès, la formation des femmes médecins sur la Crec, et la poursuite de la mise en œuvre des activités de communication dans toutes les régions». S’agissant des perspectives, le ministère de la Santé a mis dans son agenda la «préparation des activités Crec à dérouler pour le Magal de Touba, la revue du référentiel en appui psychosocial aux enfants affectés par le Covid-19 et leurs parents, la finalisation de la synthèse des plans d’action Crec des régions médicales». En outre, il est annoncé la «poursuite de l’assistance psychosociale des cas, des contacts, de leur famille et du personnel soignant». Concernant la situation épidémiologique, le rapport du ministère renseigne que sur «71 districts sanitaires touchés depuis le début de la pandémie, 56 sont encore actifs dont tous les districts des régions de Dakar, Thiès et Kaolack». Autre information donnée dans le document, c’est le taux d’occupation des lits qui «est en moyenne de 25,6% à Dakar, 21,5% dans les autres régions et 48,6% dans les sites de prise en charge extrahospitalière». Le document informe qu’un cumul «de 11 458 patients sortis guéris soit un taux de guérison de 78%» a été enregistré. Par ailleurs, il est noté un cumul «de 174 649 échantillons testés par les différents laboratoires à la date du 21/09/2020 et un «taux de positivité de 2,41%» à la même date. Dans le cadre de la surveillance épidémiologique et points d’entrée, les services du ministère informent de la continuité des «investigation des cas suspects et des cas confirmés, du suivi des contacts par les équipes des districts sanitaires, l’enregistrement des données dans le Dhis2 Tracker ». Il en sera de même pour le «screening des voyageurs entrants et sortants (prise de température, testing et remplissage des fiches du voyageur)». Pour le renforcement de la prise en charge, le ministère informe de la «mise en place d’un nouveau Cte au niveau du Centre hospitalier régional de Diourbel».

‘The Trouble with Mers’

note: the more I searched this the worse it got, and even harder to fix. some quotes and links will be thrown in below (and one in the text). we'll claim magic shenanigans and size for the lack of very quick orange sushi.

also, it’s google search info. I did skip over all the reddit/google answers links but they made up the majority of what popped up :T so take it all with a handful of salt (*badum *tss*). it’s just using what random info i found at 5am and jumps from there.

also note!!!: this is not prompted by any particular fic or au or even fandom, I was just thinking about the trope and decided to consult the googles. made it into a msa thing because that was honestly the first thing that came to mind, but as it’s a trope, it’s present everywhere (seriously, name me two fandoms that don’t have at least one mermaid au somewhere in them)

something always niggles at me when a story has a human befriend a mermaid from the ocean (or rescue one from an aquarium/lab) and then keeps them totally fine for days in their tub, leading to a number of humorous shenanigans. there’s even dumping waterbottles on them when they have to be moved, but uh. very rarely (if ever? I can’t actually recall any atm) are these mers from a lake or river. there really aren't many fish (or at least rarely the ones that mers are based on/made of) that can survive in both fresh and saltwater, and even then, they need to be acclimatized to the switch. and with lots of other variables in play too, there's a reason saltwater tanks are not recommended for beginners.

anyway, small snippet of something here under the cut. idek anymore, it's 830am writing this and I have yet to go to bed. please don’t take it too seriously.

arthur is turned into a mer somehow on a case (as he is). maybe a spell rebound or something, doesn't matter. He can still breathe air, but it's hard to do and hurts and he's drying out fast and needs water.

cue frantic running to the nearest place they can and throwing him into the tub, already half filled up with water. he's relieved at the sudden plunge that wets his gills, but suddenly starts convulsing as he tries to breathe through them.

he's a saltwater fish.

...fish which have only minutes in freshwater before their cells rupture (among other bad things). the best (or, honestly, worst) case scenario, most captive/pet species can last 7-10 minutes, the majority of it being a confused, horrible, painful death.*

luckily he can still breathe air somewhat, so lewis grabs him out before the delicate side and throat gills/tissues are damaged beyond repair, wrapping him in the hotel towels in a desperate bid to stop the hypersaturation.

“The fish won't swell, its cells will. The skin cells and Gills rupture and it dies. [...] The death is something between water toxicity, suffocation, and chemical burns.”

mystery and vivi on a frantic trip to the van to grab all the salt they have (which is barely a fraction of what it was before, now Lewis is back as a ghost), in a desperate bid to try and jerry-rig a mix to hold him over. meanwhile lewis is panicking on the phone with the nearest fish and pet stores. just some poor owner freaking out because it's late and his big tank just shattered and his very important large fish doesn't have enough water for the makeshift holding pool. or something to that effect, whatever works.

they end up buying out the nearest two pet stores of their (admittedly very small amount of) packaged saltwater. (the fish warehouse would have had plenty, but they asked too many questions. they know their fish facts and lew's cover that he refuses to add specifics to sounds, well, rather fishy (*badum tss*)... they do want to come help, though, the poor animal(s) shouldn't have to suffer regardless how shady their owner is. they even offer to hold his “pet” for him until its tank is fixed, which, obviously, bad idea. they probably think he’s keeping some illegal exotic(s) or some such thing, but still want to help.)

arthur in pain finally lifted from the wet tile (far too little salt and not enough time to dissolve what they did have meant pretty much no makeshift water for him, apart from maybe some small towels soaked in the saltiest water they could make to put on his gills) to a shallow kiddie pool (they can't risk any leaking out through the tub’s drain), and there's just enough water to submerge his gills if he flattens himself to the bottom. it's too small for him to curl up in, his spine can't bend like those mermaids in the cartoons, so his tail is almost completely hanging out the side. it's hooked over the tub’s lip so the weight doesn't crush the flimsy plastic and spill even more of the precious water. every few minutes vivi and mystery have to struggle to lift him up by his torso to re-wet the long appendage, arthur too exhausted and overwhelmed and in pain to stay aware of much.

thankfully with the money from arthur's patents they're able to get a wading pool or other would-be-huge-tank-if-the-fish-in-question-wasn't-say-human-size-with-an-even-bigger-tail-on-top is set up by lance, filters and recyclers and temp control and everything. they're close enough to home artie only suffers for an hour or two trying to squeeze his torso in the repurposed equipment case without too much water splashing out. wet towels help to get his neck and tail, but they can only do so much.

the worst part, even before they finally get him stable, is anything after that first ‘make-your-own-saltwater’ attempt lewis hasn't actually been able to really touch the blond, too much residual salt covering his body. (especially with the added stuff to try and level out the imbalance caused by the fresh water.)

lewis is obviously distraught, especially when the others are sleeping and he's keeping watch, unable to reach down to the bottom of the tank to shake the cursed fish out of a nightmare, even hug him for more than a moment of comfort. it hurts arthur worse to see lew trying to ignore the burning just to help him. he feels guilty he's hurting the ghost more, even indirectly, and shies away from the contact he and lewis both desperately want.

(if this was a musical now would be the time for a sad duet with them both lamenting being so close yet worlds away, hands touching through the glass dividing them with longing looks and parallel/synced phrases and everything.)

* interesting side note tacked on a few days later, this is apparently actually used as a quick treatment for some infections in larger fish, but the assorted variables must match their other tank exactly, and they generally shouldn’t stay in there for long. it’s also possible/absolutely needed in some !fresh water! fish cases to slowly acclimate said animal to salt in the water if they need to be in for longer**. but just dumping a clownfish into a goldfish tank is not a good idea at all. **now I think about it, I had to very slowly add small amounts of dissolved salt to fritz’s hospital tank day by day to try and help his fin rot. didn’t even think about that. but eh, whatever.
