I love your country by country BL breakdowns and your trope discussions! Are there any tropes that are specific to Thailand, Korea or Japan or that show up extra often from a particular country?
Oooo, very good question.
Country Specific BL Tropes!
Visual tropes that specific countries seem to like more than others. Which is not to say everyone doesn’t do them, or Thailand doesn’t do the most (because they do the most BL). It’s a matter of in-country statistical re-occurrence.
Taiwan’s Beloved Tropes
Crash into me, AKA proximity alert and the pratfall kiss (I actually call them out for this one) I don’t think I have ever seen a Taiwanese Bl that hasn’t had this trope
Head in lap (also China & Japan)
Boyfriend sunshade
OTHERS
Weak seme uke dynamics
Masc presenting physicality
Friends to lovers
Casual physical affection and domesticity (heads in laps are popular)
Childhood crush & long term pining (also China)
Stepbrother trope (and other taboo power dynamics like teacher/student, age gap)
Kidnapping for love (also China) - old and rare
Korea’s Beloved Tropes
Korea is really strategic about their tropes and seems to be aware of the entire scope available but only deploy them as required to move along the narrative. As such they don’t really have ones that reoccur all the time or that they lean into (aside from the usual romance beats like first kiss, jealousy, etc...)
Beach frolic - this seems to be used (like Thailand) by the tourist board to remind people that they have beaches too.
Back hugs - yeah I didn’t realize this either
Wound tending, a variation on this one does seem to get into all their BL, it is a very useful plot device and excuse for physical contact (like messy eater, with is pretty rare in KBL - they don't like messy)
Extreme height difference (Japan & Thailand do this too, but no one pushes it as hard in BL as Korea)
OTHERS
Food (kitchen) or small business settings, and eating
Love triangles
Hyung AKA age gap (also Taiwan)
High production values, yoai framing, careful wardrobe and lighting
Japan’s Beloved Tropes
The wall loom/bang AKA Kabedon
The rooftop assignation
The water bottle drinking seme
OTHERS
Blushing maiden
The crisp blue school uniform (also Korea)
Whipping boy
Office settings
The running of the gays (one boy has his romantic epiphany at the moment of nearly losing the other guy and then absolutely must run, usually through city streets, to find to him)
Out of control seme (repressed desire spurts out)
Vietnam’s Beloved Tropes
Lap sitting
Household domesticity & gay families (also Taiwan)
Thailand’s Beloved Tropes
Thailand, because it dominates BL, dominates a lot of tropes, but here are some that specially BELONG to them, started with them, or are so very ubiquitous that we think of them as Thai.
Sing Your Feelings
Pillow Clutch
Shared Earbuds (dead trope)
Sharing his closet
OTHERS
University & high school settings
Sleep facing,
Mosquitos leave hickeys,
Forehead kissing, (others do it but Thailand LOVES it)
Hand kiss (Taiwan will do this too),
Car kissing,
pink milk,
pealing shrimp,
he’s in engineering,
post-it love note,
pinky swear (also Korea),
clear umbrella,
white wet towel sponge bath,
punishment language,
More on Thai BL & Romance Tropes
I don’t talk Chinese BL much (because for me, censorship goes both ways), but boy are they BIG fans of the fated mates AKA soulmates trope.
Other Country by Country stuff

🧡 - What show did/do you have the most fun watching?
Oh this is a tough one. I'm going to list a few because some shows are just fun.
Love is Science? - Specifically Mark and Ou Wen. Their story line was just the most fun. The rest of the show was fine and I did enjoy it, but those two were just a good time.
Triage - This was a fun show to watch and theorize on. It was also just a solid show overall and I hope it gets released on an international platform soon because this is one of those shows that everyone should watch.
What Zabb Man! - This show was much better than I was expecting it to be and again, it was mostly just fun. It's not the best BL in the world, but it is a fun watch.
Kieta Hatsukoi (aka My Love Mix Up) - Again, just a fun show with fun and wholesome characters. Aoki and Ida might be two of my favorite characters ever.
Something Crunchy Crunchy - Don't judge me, but I loved this. It has the perfect blend of unhinged chaos that I love. Would I recommend anyone else watch this? Absolutely not. But did I thoroughly enjoy it? Yes, yes I did.
My Mate Match - This show started chaotic and ended with a lot of heart. And I fully believe that the three of them end up together in the end. I will go down with this polyship thank you
The Devil Judge - Apparently I have fun being on the edge of my seat and also being in a state of near panic. This show is phenomenal, though not technically a BL. I really thoroughly enjoyed the plot twists and watching this game of intrigue and political chess. Eiljah is the best character.

I'm watching Blueming and it got me curious about BL shows that are about actors or set in the film/television industry. So far I've seen Blueming, War of Y, Lovely Writer, Vice Versa, I Promised You the Moon (& I Told Sunset About You, peripherally) and Utsukushii Kare/My Beautiful Man.
Do you have a list of these somewhere? Apologies if you've already posted one, I searched your blog and couldn't find anything.
Thanks!
I don't have a list of this, so I'll post here an hope others will add, I'm sure I'm missing some. And you basically started one for me.
BLs that Feature Actors/Film Sets/Crews
Blueming (Korea)
War of Y (Thailand)
Lovely Writer (Thailand)
Vice Versa (Thailand)
I Promised You the Moon (Thailand) - also sort of I Told Sunset About You
Utsukushii Kare AKA My Beautiful Man (Japan)
Theory of Love (Thailand)
21 Day Theory (Thailand)
Call It What You Want (Thailand)
To My Star 1 & 2 (Korea)
Love Stage!!! (Japan & Thailand)
Love With Benefits (Thailand)
Method (Korea) - don’t do it
Stage of Love (Vietnam)
Mr. CEO is Falling in Love with Him (China)
HIStory: Stay Away From Me (Taiwan)
My Pistachio (Korea) - Strongberry short
Sonnet 18 (Korea) - short
Love Lie Hide Fake (BL side, but an early meta take on the BL industry)
Idols/Singers Other
Close Friend (1 installment) & Close Friend 2
Coffee Melody (song writer, band)
The Miracle of Teddy Bear (screenwriter)
You Are Ma Boy (musician idol)
Wish You (music industry)
Our Days (tangential)
First Love Again (writer who’s being adapted)
Cutie Pie (singer)
DNA Says Love You (vlogger)
My Secret Love (vlogger)
My Mate Match (vlogger)
My Lascivious Boss (vlogger)
Given (band)
As if You Whisper (musician)
There are also quite a few play within a play (or film within a film), like Nitiman or My Love Mix Up or HIStory 2: Right or Wrong, but as the characters are usually dragged into this and don’t identify as actors I didn’t include them. I dithered over Love Sick, music club centered, and ended up leaving it off the lists.
This is opposed to actual idols who star in BLs, that list is here.
