Hiii, I'm glad the ask box is open!
Idk if you already did a rec list on this, but can you recommend me old bls, like 90/2000s? I watched Seven days movies and its really good
Oh yay! Seven Days is the best. Actually, I have never done this. Here's a list of...
10+ BL's rated 7/10 or higher that aired prior to 2018
Tumblr media
Just Friends?
Korea 2009 Gaga
This is Korea's first (kinda) upbeat version of a BL featuring already established boyfriends, one of whom is on military leave, trying to decide on coming out, family life, and the future. All of these are themes Korea will pretty much never tackle again, retreating as they would to their bubble. But what a fun little offering this little show was and is to this day. You should watch it.
Tumblr media
Love Sick & Love Sick 2
Thai 2014 YouTube
This is one of those BLs that owes almost nothing to yaoi, although it started a number of tropes that are now endemic to Thai BL. What it is, instead, is a well scripted story of bisexual self-discovery and the inherent chaos of loving someone of the same gender for the first time, all wrapped up in hormones, existing relationships, and communication issues. It is high school queer angst at its messiest. Nothing is going to be easy for these boys because queer isn’t easy but also because life isn’t easy… welcome to adulthood sweethearts.
I'm actually considering a rewatch of these beginning of 2024 in honor of the 10 year anniversary if anyone wants to join.
Tumblr media
Seven Days
Japan 2015 grey
The asker already mentioned it but still, never doubt my ability to recommend this show. One of the best live action yaois ever made, with perfectly structured angst, fantastic characters and acting, and no problematic tropes (rare in Japanese BL). The leads have excellent chemistry although it’s low heat there’s still some really cute mutual kisses.
Tumblr media
Addicted: Heroin
China 2016 Viki
When Chinese BL was good it was very dirty good and when it was bad it was censored. This is the model for that statement: rich kid falls madly for the genius poor kid in his class, starts an aggressive pursuit, includes kidnapping for love, obsession, stepbrother trope, plus some cheating. I love this BL because of what I could have been. Just stop watching it after The Sex Scene. Okay?
Tumblr media
SOTUS & SOTUS S & SOTUS Our Skyy
Thai 2016 YouTube
This is the BL that launched a hundred BLs. No literally, it was SOTUS’s international success that pretty much built the Thai BL industry into the juggernaut it is today. People have baggage around SOTUS, I have nostalgia. Trigger warning on bully hazing. Review and discussion here.
Tumblr media
Make it Right 1 & 2 (but not Beach)
Thai 2016 YouTube (Cheewin warning)
What to say about this show, the origin of the Thai BL pulps? It’s objectively terrible, and not just the leads but the side couple too - yet I love it. I tend to call myself the “world’s foremost Make It Right apologist.” I recognize the issues but I find it utterly charming, especially Tee’s utter devotion to Fuse the baby bi disaster.
Tumblr media
Long Time No See
Korea 2017 Gaga
Catfishing assassins on either side of a turf war who fall in love not knowing they are on opposite sides. Or do they? Good fight sequences, mature characters, high heat, very suspenseful, AND an HEA. If you like KinnPorsche or Kiseki you will LOVE this one.
Tumblr media
HIStory Obsessed
Taiwan 2017 Viki
I weirdly love this but you should know what you are in for: that title. It has a stalking theme meets fated mates and quite a bit of dubious consent. Uke obsessed with seme to the point of losing himself and his identity dies after being rejected, and then has a chance to reboot his life. He decides to save himself by never falling in love. But destiny is a bitch, and this time the seme becomes obsessed with him. This one owes a lot to dark Chinese and Japanese BL, but kind of corrects for the expected sad dead finale by ending happily and playing with a ton of BL tropes. The leads have good chemistry, it's higher heat and the first time Taiwan starts to push that, and VERY DRAMATIC.
Some Others you might consider
Candy and Kiss - Japan 2015
Silhouette of Your Voice (Hidamari ga Kikoeru) - Japan 2017
Red Balloon - Taiwan 2017

Review: HIStory 1: Obsessed (2017)
Tumblr media
Region: Taiwan
Aprox. Length: 01:11:11
Viewing Source: Viki
Summary: Another part of the HIStory webseries follows the story of Shao Yi Chen, a man who dies in an accident involving his boyfriend, Jiang Jing Teng. Shao Yi Chen is reborn and sent back 9 years. To save his future self he avoids Jiang Jing Teng and avoids his feelings for him. Problem is Shao Yi Chen has loved Jiang Jing Teng for a long time and has written about him in his diary. While destroying the diary, Jiang Jing  Teng discovers a few pages. Causing Jiang Jing Teng to become curious about Shao Yi Chen. Will he resist the love of the handsome man Jiang Jing Teng and save his future self, or will he fall for the same man twice and risk his life?
Overall Opinion: Woo-boy, if I could play the word association game with the third installment in the original HIStory webseries my word would be capital “T” Toxic. But of the three, Obsessed is arguably the best and most watchable. If you’re okay with dumb, manipulative choices and aggressively possessive characters you’ll have no problem with History 1: Obsessed. The title honestly says it all about this installment and I thought that, outside of considerably good acting, the plot was also interesting and offered some questions for the audience to sit with and answer for themselves. Honestly, give the two prior parts of HIStory 1 a miss (eventually I’ll do reviews for them as well), but I think that Obsessed offers an interesting enough experience that it should be watched. That being said, please don’t go into it thinking it’ll be cute and unproblematic. This is a GUILTY pleasure show for me, emphasis on guilty. Neither of the main characters is ultimately a good person and their relationship is codependent and destructive to themselves. I enjoy it despite, perhaps even for, how they revolve around each other.
Technical Rating: ★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆
Personal Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆ (this is a direct reflection of my personal bias)
(See under the cut for a deeper analysis/opinions of character/plot/technical aspects. Beware of possible spoilers.)
Main Characters:
Shao Yi Chen:
Tumblr media
Yi Chen, out of our two main characters, is arguably the least problematic. His reaction to thinking that Jin Teng is going to marry a woman while they're in a long-term committed relationship is reasonable and it’s not like he intentionally got hit by a car. Then when he finds himself back in time he tries to get away from the impending downfall of his relationship. Ultimately he’s unable to break the cycle of his relationship with Jin Teng and ends up falling into the obsession that Jin Teng brings with him. I was actually blown away by Teddy Ren, and that could be because I watched HIStory 1’s episodes back to back and the other two parts of the first installment are… not good, but I think he really expresses Yi Chen’s conflicting feelings strongly and you can feel how much he constantly wants to give in, despite how he feels the future will turn out.
Jiang Jin Teng:
Tumblr media
This man is so toxic, manipulative, and yikes, but because of how he functions in the story I am led to believe that he might not have been this way before the time travel event. We only really experience Jin Teng through Yi Chen’s story and so we don’t have a really good baseline for how he is before and it is heavily implied through the story that the direct changes Yi Chen has made causes him to be like this. Jin Teng doesn’t even fully understand why he’s drawn to Yi Chen, but he knows that he has to be close to him and it’s because Yi Chen keeps trying to avoid him, and avoid the future, that it drives his obsession. Now, that’s not an excuse for the shit he pulls because, let me reiterate, yikes. Still, especially in the latter half, he nails the “I don’t know why but I have to have you.” It’s uncomfortable but you can’t help but be invested. My biggest complaint is that original timeline Jin Teng is a fucking moron and could have prevented the entire show from happening.
Rating: ★★★★☆
Side Characters:
Even though there are a couple side characters and even a side ship they don’t actively establish important enough characters for themselves for me to dedicate a whole section to them.
Rating: ★★☆☆☆
Story/Plot:
Like I’ve said, this story is toxic. I can understand why people wouldn’t like this show, Jin Teng is awful and the situation that he and Yi Chen go through is not healthy, but there’s something in the way that they’re both so intertwined with one another. Is the fact that Jin Teng pretends to lose his memory and uses it as a chance to inject himself into Yi Chen’s life after he forcibly kisses him (regardless of how Yi Chen gives into his obvious desire) really not great? Yes. It’s disgusting. In and out of the context of the show, not good, very bad. But I’d be lying if I said a part of me doesn’t see the appeal in having someone want you that badly.
Depending on if you guiltily (or not, different strokes and all that) enjoy the toxicity will greatly impact your enjoyment of the final because, spoiler alert, Jin Teng wins. He, after all the manipulation, force, and corrosion, gets Yi Chen to succumb. Now, I personally, do not have a problem with this, and honestly, the last scene where Yi Chen does finally give it, where Jin Teng breaks down and admits he doesn’t understand why he's like this either, is probably my favorite in the whole show. It’s both characters laying it out, their insecurities, their dependence, messed up as it is, on one another. It’s some of the best acting in the HIStory 1 series and to me, and while not fixing anything, is a satisfying ending to the show.
They try to explain in the last episode exactly what’s caused the time travel, which was fine but unnecessary though I appreciate that it explains what happened during the opening before Yi Chen’s accident and led to Jin Teng's “cheating” on Yi Chen.
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Technical/Visual Execution:
HIStory 1 crawled so that the further HIStory series could run. Visually, History 1: Obsessed is probably the most palatable of the HIStory 1 series even if it’s got “I was shot on a camcorder” vibes and the overall color pallet is a washed-out grey. They don’t try to do anything fancy but it’s all fairly solid for when it was produced, the genre it is, and the budget they likely had.
Rating: ★★★☆☆

DPxDC prompt: Danny Phantom is an extremely high-level threat due to his capabilities and experience battling against his ghostly enemies. Batman is creating a contingency plan for him and Constantine's advice, as the one who dances the tango with the Infinite Realms? A bone-weary sigh of "plop him down a telly and put on a NASA documentary or something. It's like you haven't been dealing with teen kids for decades now fer fuck's sake."

I love the implication that when Ryan and the Professor are not trying to strangle each other’s throats, Ryan gives him rides home from Watcher HQ. Like imagine, if you will, the Professor sitting in a lil booster seat in Ryan’s passenger side, sipping on a bottle of Bug Juice, singing at the top of his little puppet lungs to Doja Cat Taylor Swift while Ryan wastes away in rush hour traffic.

I think it's so adorable that early humans took wild gourds - a tiny fruit that hollows out as it dries, making it float - and decided to make something out of it
Tumblr media
they thought the tiny fruit was so good that they bred it for thousands of years, making it larger to form into bowls and cups, and different shapes to become bottles and spoons
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and musical instruments
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, people took the hollow gourds they farmed, and they turned them into houses for birds. We adapted them into the perfect houses for birds, and now there are specific breeds of birdhouse gourd just for making into birdhouses
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And humans dedicated gardening space and time and thousands of years of breeding to make the gourds so absolutely perfect for birds, that there is a species of bird that lives almost exclusively in them

I also would like people to give more appreciation to the great thematic unity in all of The Lord of the Rings. The idea is “do what good you can with what you are given.” Usually your abilities and your chances seem horribly small, even though your responsibility is so enormous. The minutes, the little decisions, the days, the small towns, the small characters, matter the most. The fate of the whole big world of good and evil and languages and races and heroes and villains all hangs on what’s done by a little scholar and his gardener.

Hi I'm new to the BL world, I watched Love in the Air and Secret Crush on You and I don't know what to watch next. I don't like to watch shows with sad endings and the shows that I plan to watch are:
Semantic Error
Cutie Pie
Kinn Porsche
But I don't know what order to watch it in, I've heard that Kinn Porsche is a little on the rough side since it's like a mafia type show so I don't know if I should wait until after I watch my other series or just watch it now. Also do you have any other BL recommendations? Preferably ones with happy endings. I've been debating on watching My Only 12% or The Eclipse but I know there's a lot of angst despite the happy endings.
Sorry for the long ask, any help would be great. Thank you
Tumblr media
Did you like LITA & SCOY? Since you mention them, I'm going with yes.
Should I assume you want stuff in that vein?
So we are talking messy gays, very high heat levels, and no particular need for plot or consent?
Semantic Error is one of my absolute favorites but it doesn't hit... any of that. It's a tight clean little story, lower heat leaves (always from Korea) and not very messy.
Of those 3, I would go:
Cutie Pie
Semantic Error
KinnPorsche
KP is... a lot, it does everything the 2 you mention does though + added fight scenes, kink, and utter chaos. If you end up liking that I have a watching rec list specifically for it since it onboarded so many new BL fans.
Tumblr media
Some others in your wheelhouse?
TharnType (the orig of this style of BL out of Thailand)
Why R U?
HIStory 4: Close to You
Oh! My Sunshine Night
Big Dragon
Generally you’ll be looking to Thailand and Taiwan for this kind of BL.
If you also ended up liking Semantic Error:
We Best Love
My Beautiful Man
HIStory 2: Crossing the Line
Lovely Writer
Addicted: Heroin
HIStory Obsessed
My Day the series
These all have great chemistry but are not high heat. FYI heat and chemistry are not the same, heat has to do with the acts depicted on screen, chemistry with the actor’s abilities to portray physical, emotional, and mental connection with each other.
Both My Only 12% and The Eclipse are kinda the opposite of SCOY and LITA. They are a lot of story and character development and some angst, but much lower heat levels, and pretty clean narrative structures. They’re heavier: 12% deals with the death of a parent, Eclipse with suicide.
They do both have very good chemistry though.

Here’s more stuff on this topic:
