there really needs to be a name for the trope where a piece of media makes a very obvious fantasy stand-in for an irl marginalized group--or just straight up people from an irl marginalized group--so they can conflate them with their oppressors, whether directly or with sly innuendo and imagery to evoke it. this is never used as an opportunity to explore lateral violence, let alone done so with sensitivity; it's bait dangled in front of an audience who's just aware enough of political movements, structures, and ideologies to go Ideology Very Bad and instantly shut off any examination of the messaging behind it.
(which is, often as not, either shifting the blame to marginalized people so the audience can hate demographics they're already comfortable with hating instead of grappling with the discomfort of real privilege being called out or held accountable, 'so the horrific and violent bigotry leveled at that group irl is totally justified and we should Do More of That Actually,' or both.)
like. i keep seeing this over and over and over. don't get me started on how SF/F media in particular seems completely unable to restrain itself from having at least one black character in a setting that breathes anywhere near fantasy racism say and do just the most ungodly racist shit ever. every time, jesus fuck, it's awful.
this trope is not at all limited to racism or antisemitism--it shows up for pretty much any marginalized group you can think of, BOY i have rants in me about a lot of portrayals of abuse survivors in various media i'm into--but it seems to pop up most blatantly and obviously for those. and fascism in general, which, i HIGHLY recommend these excellent essays for a more articulate and in-depth analysis of than i could give in a paragraph of one post. they're fantastic go read them and come back. especially the second one.
more specifically, it's a special favorite of these fucking people to evoke this with nazism. so the closest term i've got to what i'm describing is naziwashing, which i think is still useful as a descriptor of a subset of that phenomenon but again does not nearly cover all of it. so i'm a bit stumped.

Trying to draw a Hitler reference from Henry being an artist took me out. Op really did too much with that post, on god. I guess Will Byers must also be Hitler since he's also an artist and he's a mirror of Henry. 🤔 Damn, I'm totally on to something here /s.
I think the implication Henry didn't like his father because he's a WW2 vet who fought for the allies and Henry was on the N*zis side deserves an honorable mention too, lol. Like Henry wasn't literally born after the war had ended and like we weren't canonly shown that Henry's father was responsible for the shelling of countless innocent civilians which resulted in, AT LEAST, a literal infant being burned alive in its cot, and Henry witnessed these horrific memories and was traumatized by them as a little boy after he read his father's mind. But no, yeah, for sure it was totally because baby Henry was on the N*zi's side and he was pissed with his dad because his dad was an ally.

the "it's okay to punch nazis" sentiment is never gonna be as woke as you think it is. hating nazis is a nearly universally agreed on concept, to the point right wingers use it to try and dismantle the left
however "it's okay to love and support the jewish community" seems to be far more controversial and less universally agreed upon, despite being the arguably more important statement

finally figured out my issue with sam mendes cabaret. how can it be a political cabaret if the whole fucking point is that ALL YOUR TROUBLES ARE OUTSIDE!!! it ends up blaming the victims for ignoring the nazi problem. the attempts to humanize and radicalize the emcee just do not make sense with the concept, even if that focus is interesting. in the film, and the original + 80s musical, my impression is that the emcee/the cabaret is exploiting queer, poor, sexual eccentricities of performers for culture tourists. which at first feels welcoming, but Because of its nonexistent moral standing eventually ends up a nazi spot. the mendes musical (and maybe the original + 80s?) has the cabaret performers reveal themselves as nazis at the end of act 1, which WOULD be powerful if it mattered outside that scene. if the emcee is marginalized, if he wanted to protest that horror, his cabaret being taken over by nazism would mean something. there's also the reintroduction of "i dont care very much", the emcee looming and not interacting, sometimes THROWING the brick thru schultz's window, performing willkommen with cliff at the end... none of that makes sense with making emcee a jewish, queer, political prisoner, making "if you can see her through my eyes" sincere, making him take back "tomorrow belongs to me"... IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE. it's been driving me insane for one and a half years.

so sorry to everyone who did not know about nazi-nurse and wtnv, they were a semi popular/prolific podcast fan artist who's url was literally nazi-nurse and they doubled down on keeping the url after people pointed out that it was Not Good to have that as a url, and people really loved their work because it was Skinny Man In A Suit and they were willing to excuse the everything else because tumblr loves a Skinny Man In A Suit. if you google search nazi-nurse and wtnv you'll find a decent amount of people gushing over this person's art. so.

mmkay some thoughts
1. tabor you’re doing great I care about you very much
2. this paper moset proposes at the end would not be accepted by any reputable scientific journal today let alone 300 years from now. it’s a case report, so typically it wouldn’t require a statement of ethical approval from an institutional review board, but standard procedure for a case report journal with any kind of ethical standards will require a statement that consent was obtained from the patient. b’elanna would not consent to that and the other alien could not, and if you get caught faking a consent statement you’re FUCKED. obviously they were not going to go ahead and actually write this paper but this is related to my fucking job lmao I had to weigh in.
3. some people are way too flippant about this for comfort imo. janeway making like. jokes to b’elanna toward the end of the episode was really uncomfortable. I can see her making the decision, but everything around it was kinda gross.
4. idk I have mixed feelings about this in general? like the central ethical question isn’t bad there’s definite merit to it and there are some decent arguments laid out that warrant legitimate thought, but moset is a very clear comparison to mengele, and as is often the case with voy episodes it seems like there are unconsidered consequences, this time in terms of legitimizing science that was generally just. really fucking bad from a scientific perspective (and an ethical perspective, but like. obviously.). idk taking that establishing shortcut really feels like a misstep here because there are still real world ramifications.
5. also there’s just so many confounding factors in this episode. just like as one example the fact that the hologram didn’t have a record of the things his real world counterpart had done just seemed like an unnecessary additional variable in this moral dilemma. this is a really frequent problem with trek biomed ethics episodes where they kind of just start throwing in other factors, and I don’t know if it’s a lack of material or an attempt to kind of back out of dealing with the core dilemma or what.
6. gotta be honest every time there’s a cardassian episode I just really wish I was watching ds9. voy’s whole take has just not been great.

one thing that does make me a little nervous sometimes about writing up pericles meta is that like.... quite a lot of it goes in-depth about the extent of how incredibly vile and cruel the things are that he does to other characters, and his reasons for doing them. that's Important, and i do my best not to try to cushion it, despite discussing how it plays into his trauma and the shit hand he was dealt and vice versa. if anything the juxtaposition of those things is the point of all this meta for me, and it gets to the heart of so, so much that resonates with me about sdmi. erasing that would be a disservice to him and basically every other character in the show that i'm invested in.
.....and at the same time it's always really sucked how often i see people talk about how one-note pure evil he is, how it's impossible to write him as a complex or sympathetic character without making him totally OOC, how people who genuinely like him are [insert apologist here], how you're not allowed to enjoy exploring the awful dynamics he gets into with people, how they want him to be gruesomely murdered by the protags and think it'd be funny and satisfying and the show would be better for it, and just generally talk about How Much They Straightforwardly Hate Him Because He Does Bad Things. not everyone does this, thankfully, but enough of them have over the years that i just don't really want to see it anymore.
i know i joke all the time about how 'i love him and he makes me sad but i am going to peel him like a banana,' and i'm not going to try to tell other people they can't dislike him or anything, especially since i know a lot of the stuff he does is going to be really fucking triggering for some people. i do my best to just curate and block, mute, or scroll past if i need to. but he's genuinely one of my favorite characters ever and he means a lot to me--especially since i can relate hard to a lot of the sympathetic themes behind his being a piece of shit--and when i write my meta posts about him, i do it to share what i love about his character, and maybe get some people to appreciate him in a new light. and the idea of actively adding to the torches and pitchforks instead is..... kind of depressing to me and i really hope that's not how it turns out.
basically i guess this is me asking preemptively, before i start writing up posts Really Getting Into His Awful Shit at Great Length and in Great Detail, that folks please be mindful with 'i hate this fucking bird' comments on posts i make. i do hope people enjoy reading what i have to say about him, and get something out of it, but.... yeah. he sucks real bad but please be nice.

“The DSM and the ICD are not the only formal classifications of mental illnesses. The Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual, CCMD, RDOC, and HiTOP, among many other classifications such as WKL and Millon's personality inventory, exist as well.”
I’m curious then, is there a reason why I’ve never heard of these manuals (except for the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual)? The post is tagged as psych history, so are these old manuals?
Thanks for the ask, anon!
The post is tagged as psych history mostly for my own classification of my blog, although some of them are indeed old. The rest are not really clinically used in Western psychiatry as far as I'm aware, which might explain why you haven't heard of them.
The CCMD is the Chinese Classification of Mental Disorders. I haven't read it myself.
Given the existence of Japanese psychiatric diagnoses like taijin kyofusho or modern-type depression that don't exist in Western psychiatry, I would expect there to be a similar Japanese manual, but I haven't been able to turn up any evidence that one exists.
RDOC and HiTOP are not manuals for clinical use, but research frameworks. Instead of classifying the spectrum of symptoms into discrete conditions, they try to identify the underlying factors that produce mental illnesses. So for instance, both anxiety and depression are part of HiTOP's "internalizing" spectrum, and all the schizospectral conditions are part of the "thought disorder" spectrum.
Tumblr media
Millon's personality taxonomy was somewhat incorporated into the DSM and somewhat stands alone as its own thing. I believe that some psychometrics derived from it, such as the MCMI, have some clinical use in screening for personality disorders.
The WKL, or Wernicke-Kleist-Leonhardt, classification of mental illnesses is mostly historic at this point, although there are a few European, mostly Francophone, groups that use it. It was developed in Germany, first by Wernicke, then by Kleist (who was a Nazi), then Leonhardt (who worked in the DDR and was as far as I can tell from what I've read his writings, against the Nazis). It isn't a classification of every mental illness, just the "endogenous psychoses", which would correspond to the more mainstream categories of melancholic depression, mania + bipolar, schizophrenia, and catatonia. WKL also has a category of "cycloid psychoses", which have primarily psychotic symptoms but follow an episodic course similar to bipolar disorder. This is the main contribution of the system to other areas of psychiatry. There's a little bit of intriguing research relating cycloid psychoses to limbic encephalitis, although not nearly enough to be conclusive.

IDK why I find it so funny at the fact of how squishy Craig is.
The poor boy is so light that Damien's windy powers or whatever literally blew him into the wind literally of all people.
Then there was an incident with the school bus. I forgot what happened, but the poor boy flew out of the bus.
He had an eye injury from Tweek to the point he needed stitches
The poor boy gets shot with Cupid Ye's arrow and turns into a Nazi
The poor boy also got KO'd by Eric Cartman in the post covid special and then gets hung up on the ceiling, upside down
Let's not forget how he also got yeeted by Cartman's literal fat ass

When I was like 9 I read this article about teenage hate groups and about how these teen nazis would apparently charge their phones to 88% bc the number 88 is used as a dog whistle and ever since then whenever I accidentally charge my phone to 88% I get scared that I’m secretly a nazi.
