This was an ask from @daisy-like-a-cow
It was for hidden injury, fainting, and I think infected, tumblr ate your ask and it won’t pop up.
First of thank you!! Second I’m so sorry for this taking so long ❤️❤️
Ao3 link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/25815538
“Good job Parker good job, can’t even go one lousy patrol without getting stabbed.” Peter muttered to himself as he attempted to swing back to the apartment while trying to keep the knife from jostling. He remembered from his field training with Natasha that you aren’t supposed to remove a the weapon from a wound without getting proper medical attention, but he wasn’t going to bother Mr. Stark. He had gotten stabbed enough times to know he could do this by himself. It was also barely a stab, it was more like a really deep cut, a scratch if you will, at least that’s what he kept trying to tell himself. So when he finally had gotten back to his apartment he had a plan. First he had to somehow sneak into May’s room without waking her up to grab a needle and thread. Then he would go to the bathroom and carefully take out the knife and clean it with rubbing alcohol. And finally he would use his very little knowledge of stitching to stitch himself up. The plan commenced.
Instead of going into the apartment from his own window, he decided just going into May’s would be easier. So he slowly eased her window open and crawled inside.
“Peter what are you-“ May sleepily asked from her bed.
“Uh-Nothing! You’re dreaming, this is just a dream, go back to sleep.” Peter whisper shouted, as he rummaged through May’s sewing box until he finally found what he was looking for. He grabbed the needle and thread and quietly left her room and went into the bathroom. He quickly took out the knife and placed it on the counter, next he grabbed the bottle of rubbing alcohol and poured a little on the wound. Then Peter took the needle and thread and quickly pushed the needle through the skin and began to stitch. It took around 20 minutes and he almost passed out but he did it. It was around three am and he still had school the next day, so he climbed into bed and instantly fell asleep.
—-/—/—-/
When he woke up, the first thing he noticed was that his side was itching like crazy. He lifted up his shirt to look at the wound and gasped in surprise. The area around the stitches were red and inflamed and there a watery pus that had started to come from the wound. “Well shit.” Peter thought to himself, he decided the best thing to do was to remove the stitches, so he snipped them and some how doing that the wound looked worse than it did before. But he had to get to school, so quickly got dressed and ran into the kitchen hoping that May had already left. But like most things in his life recently, it wasn’t really going the way he hoped.
“Hey sweetie, how did you sleep? I had the strangest dream last night and-“
“Hey May, love you, gotta go bye” Peter said as he rushed towards the door, snagging a banana on his way out.
Peter ran to the subway station and made it to school. Barely. He almost passed out on the subway because he got so dizzy just from standing. But if he didn’t do anything too strenuous it would be fine right?
Wrong. Peter was so very wrong. Getting through first period was practically torture, his side burning and twinging with every movement. And next he had gym. He changed his clothes in the bathroom instead of out with everyone else because he hadn’t wrapped the it and didn’t want anyone to think he got stabbed or something. Which of course he had but that wasn’t the point. But at least today, all they were doing was the rope climbing test. He could do that. All he had to do was just climb to the top of the rope and ring the bell. He’s climbed higher on patrol, this was going to be no problem at all. Except it turned into a slight problem. When Peter reaches midway on the rope, he got really dizzy all of the sudden and black spots filled his vision as he let go of the rope and passed out.
“Peter!” He heard a voice call out. He let out a loud groan and slowly opened his eyes.
“Wha- happened?” Peter asked as he slowly sat up.
“You took quite the tumble there Parker, I’m sending you to the nurse to go home for the day.” Coach Wilson said as he helped the boy sit up.
“Uh- thank you sir.” Peter said as he stumbled out of the gym to the nurses office.
When he arrived to the nurses office the nurse had him lay down on the cot as she called his emergency contacts.
“I can’t seem to get a hold of your aunt let me try this other number.” The nurse said as she bustled around her small office. Peter zoned out after that knowing Tony would be absolutely livid if he found out why Peter passed out.
—-/—-/-
Peter just have fallen asleep waiting for Tony to arrive because he woke up to someone softly shaking his shoulder.
“Hey buddy, time to go.” Peter stood up slowly and needed to lean on Tony the whole way to his car.
“What’s going on with you bud?” Tony said as he buckled Peter in.
“Nothing I just- it’s nothing Tony.” Peter mumbled as he let his eyes fall shut.
“Wanna try that again? Your lying skills are somehow getting worse and worse every time you open your mouth.” Tony said, running his fingers through Peter’s hair. “Are you sick? Not sleeping good? Are you not eating what’s wrong bud? Just talk to me. Tony said softly. Peter saw his life line and took it.
“I’ve just been not sleeping well recently, it’s nothing, I’m fine.” Peter said, trying to sound as believable as possible.
“Pete, you need to come with me with this kind of stuff, I can help you, I’ve dealt with all of this, I know all the little tricks and tips. I’m going to bring you back to the tower and we are going to have a little slumber party.” Tony said taking his hand from Peter’s hair and starting the car. Peter let out a snort at the slumber party part.
“Seriously Mr. Stark? Slumber Party?” Peter asked with a smirk.
“Yeah kiddo that’s what we’re doing. Seriously Pete, I can help you, you need to tell me when you’re not feeling good or can’t sleep or anything.”
“Yeah okay.” Peter said, feeling oh so guilty. They were quiet for the rest of the ride to the Tower.
—-/—-/-
“Okay bud, here’s the plan, movie first and if that doesn’t work I’ll have to pull out my secret sleeping tactics.” Tony said, leading the boy over to the couch. Peter sat down on the couch and waited as Tony gathered some blankets and pillows. He then put a pillow on his lap and made Peter lay down while he covered both of them in a big fluffy comforter. And to make it even more sleep inducing he put on a nature documentary about jellyfish. He waited until they were about 15 minutes into it before he pulled out his real weapon. He started to slowly run his fingers through Peter’s curly locks. And it almost worked. But Peter’s side was really starting to hurt now and he just couldn’t get comfortable, so he stood up to get a new position when Tony stopped him.
“Is that blood on your shirt?” Tony asked peering at him in the darkness.
“What!? No, no it’s uh- wait, yes actually. Mr. Stark, I am uh- on my period, I’m menstruating? I’m on my menstruation.” Peter said trying to remember what he learned from sex ed.
“Peter.” Mr. Stark said unamused. “Lift up your shirt.”
“No, I uh- can’t, I-.” Peter said backing away from the man.
“Peter, come over here and let me see, I won’t get mad.” Tony said lifting his hands up as a gesture of peace. Peter slowly walked over and lifted up his shirt and Tony gasped. The area around the wound was turning purple and it was leaking pus and blood.
“Friday tell Bruce we need him.” Tony yelled as he took Peter by the arm and helped him to the Medbay.
—-/—-/—
“Septic shock!?” Tony called out as he paced in front of Peter. “Do you know why what you did was so incredibly stupid?”
“Yes Mr. Stark, it won’t happen again. Peter said, looking down at the floor. When they had gotten to the Medbay, Bruce told them that Peter was in the beginning stages of septic shock and it was good that they caught it so early. They got him hooked up to an IV with antibiotics and fluids, and Bruce also cleaned and stitched up his wound. But Tony was still freaked out about the whole thing and finally stopped pacing and sat down next to Peter.
“Don’t ever do that again bud.” Tony said softly grabbing Peter’s hand. “You could’ve died, you know that? Next time please tell me these things, I can help you, I promise I won’t be mad.”
“Yes sir.” Peter said, his eyes full of tears.
“C’mere kid.” Tony said, and Peter curled up into his arms as Tony rocked him back and forth to calm him down.
“I- I didn’t mean- I didn’t think-“ Peter said between sobs.
“Hey, it’s fine buddy, at least we got it under control, next time talk to me, I can’t help you.” Tony said softly running his fingers through Peter’s hair.
“Thank you” Peter whispered into his chest.
“Of course bud.” Tony replied, holding him tighter.
And that’s how Pepper found them the next morning, curled up in each others arms.

2022/04/07 Winslow Culottes Wrap Hack :: Flat Felled Seams
Tumblr media
Date started: 04/02/2022
Date completed: 04/07/2022
If someone told me it would be more than a decade before I tried flat felled seams again I wouldn't believe them, but here we are, in 2022, and the last time I tried this seam was in 2010. It's not rather complicated to do, but I tend to become quite confused when sewing things that are not familiar, and flat felled seams just happens to be one of those perplexing to me things like french seams that 50 percent of the time I end up completing wrong. On our recent vacation to the Mendocino coast, I took my machine outside and watched the same video numerous times until I was clear on which version of the flat fell I wanted to use.
To commence, you can start RST or WST, and I chose to start WST and finish it on the outside. As lovely as linen is, the tendency to fray is challenging for someone like myself who really wears their clothes.
Tumblr media
For the crotch area, I shifted to RST, and did the method taught in most schools which is trimming down one side and pressing to finish. I know everyone loves to use sergers as they are quicker, but I personally find that finish a bit unnecessary in home sewing. Why make your own clothes if you don't finish them beautifully?
Tumblr media
Storytime Detour: The epic fail of the pandemia was a lovely pair of wrap pants from a Japanese sewing book that I made in a very expensive gauze and got huge holes in the bum area on the second wear as I was working in the garden. I was pretty upset because the fabric was purchased from a well known retailer in our area, and they charge about 2 to 3 times more per yard for cloth. Needless to say, it was an epic failure. Now, I only purchase cloth from Merchant and Mills, Tessuti, and a new to me local company called Lyrical Fabrics that offers lovely deadstock and currently, tonnes of gingham!
My sewing space was incredible. I purchased an extension cord in town and set myself up to sew with the birds and listen to the ocean. So restorative for my sensitive nervous system.
Tumblr media
I think I have enough patterns for the year. In 2022, I am looking forward to rediscovering what I have already purchased and sewing from what I already have. I do purchase new patterns to support makers I appreciate, but I don't need to print anymore patterns at the plotter as I printed more than enough last year.
Size Sewn: 2, no mods. For reference, I am 5' 7"
Project 002/012 of 2022 were these wrap pants. What will project 003 be? Stay tuned for more.

It’s hard to imagine now, but back in 2013 when this Brunswick East property was for sale, nobody wanted it. Rumour has it the property once had established olive trees along the front, which were removed in the hopes the site would be seen as a worthwhile subdivision for a townhouse development.
‘This was before Brunswick East real estate prices went crazy, and they didn’t succeed in selling the property for what they wanted. Lou stumbled across it when it was off market,’ says designer Kim Kneipp, who purchased the house with her partner Lou Weis, creative director of Broached Commissions.
A quick cosmetic renovation sustained them while Kim was pregnant, before a ‘proper’ renovation commencing in 2014. ‘We were in such a panic to nest that we essentially resigned ourselves to the quickest fabrication process imaginable, that being prefab. We added a new kitchen, dining, lounge room and upstairs parent retreat with an en suite’ says Kim.
With Kim’s styling flair, the home has grown over time to reflect the creative family who live here, including sons Felix, 14, and Max, 8.
Kim’s design explores the ‘wabi’ design philosophy, embracing elegant simplicity, and ‘a love for shadow play’, as described by Jun’ichiro Tanizaki in his book In Praise of Shadows. Rather than opening up the house to the bright northern light, large eaves and internal courtyards and zones have been created throughout, providing spaces with a softer, more diffused light, that gently track the sun’s movements throughout the day.
‘The house is mostly white with shadowy, dark zones, which creates a calm backdrop to frame our timber textures and bright green tropical garden,’ Kim says.
Also integrated into the home are details not obvious to the visitor that hold sentimental value. For example, Lou’s love of St Kilda, where he previously lived, is referenced in the salvaged kitchen timbers.
‘I have a good friend who collects recycled timbers, and I knew he had the old St Kilda Pier in his collection, so when we renovated, I bought pieces from him that were then used to make our kitchen shelves and the front face of our kitchen island,’ says Kim. ‘It was the closest I could get to bringing St Kilda to East Brunswick.’
Once appearing as a ‘respectable Victorian dame invaded by a futuristic robot’ (in Kim’s words!), the use of dark exterior paint, combined with the gradual growth of a jungle-like garden all around have softened the edges of this home, and given it a relaxed, lived-in feel. The family have also created a lush nature corridor for birds and insects here, including a frog pond for nature loving Max!
‘All of the vines and plants have softened the exterior relationship of the house and our front deck recreates my country Queensland childhood, encouraging so much conversation and interaction with neighbours and passersby,’ says Kim.
In keeping with Kim’s design philosophy, this home is humble by design, and luxurious by finish. Interiors are built to be perfectly imperfect, using materials that will age and patina over time, and textures intended to soften with wear.

LadyNoir July Day 26: Falling
Part 1 | Part 2
Marinette Dupain Cheng had been a remarkably stubborn little girl; her mother had book after book of pictures to prove it.
Sabine had started to dig those dusty old books out one afternoon when the bakery was not nearly as busy and Marinette had been dawdling. She and Tom had always wanted their daughter to have a sibling, but it just never worked out. Not that they were even sure where to put them if they were so blessed. It just meant that every single scrap of work Marinette had ever made was much more of a treasure.
Alya had sat in rapt--and amused--fascination, as Sabine loudly narrated each and every embarrassing fact. Her friend, clumsy though she was, had been crazy creatively inclined for as long as she'd known her, but she hadn’t known how much she had struggled first.
As expected, Marinette had freaked out, finally rushing to drag Alya out of her house before any truly embarrassing stories would commence.
But the nostalgia bug had already struck. Sabine’s finger traced through the old pictures with a fond smile.
Her daughter always had a sharp eye for colors. As a toddler she got engrossed in a project and not didn't she let you know she was steamed if you took it away. She’d peer into shop windows, stalling when she’d found a mix of colors she’d liked. Invariably, those two would dominate in her projects for days.
When Marinette first started to draw at their kitchen table, she’d huffed in frustration, blowing a sweep of bangs out of her face. The shapes wouldn’t go in the way she’d wanted.
Sabine had been so, so sure she’d given up. The girl simply wouldn’t even look at a pencil for weeks. She hadn’t been sure how to help her
She wouldn't even look at a pencil for few weeks. And then her stubbornness took over. It turned out, she wouldn't do it with anyone watching. Sabine had gone in her room and seen the piles and piles of paper. Tom had given her more paper when she’d asked without a second thought.
Sewing, the same thing, but by then she had figured out what to expect, quickly smirking as she’d caught the first aid kit supplies slowly appearing on her fingers.
Her schoolwork didn't quite take the same direction, as she took to some subjects and struggled in others.
But Marinette had always worked hard. She had come by her stubbornness honestly.
Sabine chuckled, tucking a stray hair back behind her ear. Sometimes it was a bit uncanny in just how much her daughter took after her.
She hadn’t always liked something at first, but when something clicked, it stuck for good.
Ladybug sighed, as the giant Akuma bashed his fists into the building only a few feet wide from her head. There really was no such thing as a day off when you were a superhero.
This Akuma wasn’t made of stone. From the distance she was trying to maintain, it seemed more likely he was made of sand or mud. But his level of damage -- and his rage-addled aim -- was a a little too close for comfort. And with Alya definitely down within striking range trying to snag video footage she had plenty of cause for concern.
She grimaced, swinging up into the air to buy herself a little time while she coerced this new big guy to follow. Ladybug tried to consider all the angles and the range of motion. If it looked like Stoneheart and punched like Stoneheart, it would probably also go down like Stoneheart. But she’d need a little help to pull that off.
On that first day that the Akuma attacks had started, when Stoneheart had appeared, she’d met a boy.
Not Adrien, the one who left her with the most impossibly, hopeless crush. No, she wouldn’t meet Adrien for another day, and wouldn’t really even like him until a short while after that.
Ladybug bit her lip, as she let the yo-yo release from the ledge to search for the next best spot to swing and observe.
She’d met one of the very best friends she might ever hope to find. Or literally fall right into, as it happened.
They had just clicked, even in those first days, when she’d allowed her doubts to flood in. She hadn’t known how much her powers allowed her to do. And she’d allowed her fears to keep her from meeting her full potential. But that strong sense of justice -- and a few truly kind words from her partner -- had carried her through.
She never failed to be amazed, thinking of how their partnership had grown. How they had both grown in the past year. His ridiculous puns had started to grow on her, over time. In turn, he had grown more serious when the situation merited it.
But at the same time, so much had remained unchanged since even that first fight. How much she knew she could rely on him, sometimes without even having to say a word.
Now, there was no one else she would rather have at her side or at her back in the middle of a fight.
And they had the uncanny knack of being at the center of so many of them. But for all the Akuma they had faced, they had only ever seen some hint of Hawkmoth once for certain.
Ladybug frowned. When Volpina had come, she’d had some Hawkmoth illusions as well, but honestly neither she nor Chat Noir had any idea. For all their hard work, they really were no closer to ending his reign of terror.
She glared back at the Akuma roaring behind her, scanning his large form for the slightest hint of an Akuma.
She knew that Chat would be here soon and she’d rather be ready to move ahead with a plan.
Ladybug’s brow furrowed, as she tried to recall exactly what actions were necessary. Stoneheart--Ivan really--had Mylene as his weakness, their closeness the one thing that loosened Hawkmoth’s hold.
The Akuma fists pummeled the building she was standing on, sending a shock wave far harder than she had anticipated that rattled the roof she had landed on, sending her sprawling backwards into the long dark alleyway below.
She hadn’t even had time to grab for her yo-yo before a claw had already clasped around her wrist. “Need a hand, my Lady?”
Her eyes darted up as she exhaled, meeting those glowing green eyes and that all too familiar smirk.
She sighed, rolling her eyes dramatically. But even without looking, she knew that his smile only grew.
Just how did he managed to be as gentle as he did, balanced precariously on his teetering baton?
“What's the plan?” Chat Noir pulled her up onto the baton beside him, steadying them both back against the edge of the building as his claws scratched into the stone to firm up his grip. His other arm extended out to her for balance, offered as gallantly as if this was some sort of formal dance instead of the brawl that was sure to ensue.
And in a way, she supposed, it was. She took his accepted his arm with the slightest smirk, palming her yo-yo in her free hand. “An oldie, but a goodie?”
Chat tilted his head, his eyes chasing her hand where it rested on his arm. “Like Stoneheart?”
Ladybug nodded, her eyes darting to the entrance to the alleyway as the sound echoed close. “He seems to be doing something similar with his fists, but that might be a decoy. I can’t get in close enough on my own to see if he’s been hiding anything else.”
His grin was infectious, as he retracted his claws from the stone with a snick. “Then let’s see what this Akuma has up his sleeve.”
Smiling fondly, she shook her head. "Let's move, Chaton!"

Fashion School Class of 2020 Grads Pivot for Post-pandemic Future – WWD
https://ift.tt/3bClTOQ
The coronavirus has been particularly tough on college students studying fashion, textile and product design, the most hands-on of disciplines, with final collections having to be completed at home rather than in classrooms, and often without supplies, drawing tables, pattern-making equipment or sometimes even sewing machines.
Graduation celebrations have been scrapped, and long-awaited debuts into the fashion world, via the graduate runway show, along with them. And as unemployment soars and fashion retail and brand bankruptcies loom, students are worried about the future.
But there are glimmers of hope in doing things differently — and getting creative about it. In the first part of a three-part series, WWD saluted the next generation of fashion designers and trailblazers at the Rhode Island School of Design, ArtCollege of Design and Savannah College of Art and Design. In part two, we share what is being done differently for graduation at Academy of Art University, Otis College of Art and Design and Kent State University, as well as some words of wisdom from students, faculty and administrators.
ACADEMY OF ART UNIVERSITY, SAN FRANCISCO
New graduation plan:
“Our fashion show and portfolio review had been scheduled for May 15. We canceled that about two weeks into California’s shelter-in-place order. I think we knew this situation would go on longer,” said Simon Ungless, executive director of Academy of Art’s School of Fashion. “Those working on collections for both the May show in San Francisco and our New York Fashion Week show have all continued with collection development. The university has built a new online platform to replace the school-wide spring show. The ‘Alternative School of Fashion Spring Show’ will happen May 18 with Sarah Mower, Lutz Huelle and Sara Kozlowski from the Council of Fashion Designers of America confirmed to participate. Graduation has been moved to December.”
Career counseling:
“I’m working on producing shoots and video of physical collections,” Ungless said of pivoting to create new kinds of assets for recruiters. “To start, we are doing this remotely. Our model agent contacts all have models that have been shooting at home to produce content for clients. I’m casting models right now. Once ready we will ship clothes and then shoot through Zoom, FaceTime or have the models shoot themselves if they’re able to do that. We have several photographers ready to do this remotely. We also have students who have developed collections through CLO. These students can produce AI walking models in their collections and we can send out to contacts. We are also talking with a variety of recruiters and publications such as Arts Thread, Not Just a Label and others, about how to promote students as soon as we have the assets. I think all in all we plan to prove that shows are not necessary and quite a dinosaur. [There are] so many other ways to engage people.“
Words of wisdom from students:
“Challenges make us the people that we are. In a crazy way, I almost like a challenge because it makes success that much sweeter. It’s all about training your mind to block out the ‘what ifs’ and the ‘failures’ that arise through this crazy time and focus on what we, as students, can achieve. Focus on being confident in who we are as artists and what we have to offer for the future.”
— Makayla Godden, BFA Fashion Textile Design 2020
“Try not take everything so seriously. View the world with fresh eyes like a child and move with an open mind. Take everything as an opportunity to learn something new.”
— Donovan Smith, BFA Fashion Textile Design 2020
Words of wisdom from faculty:
“Learn to distinguish between that which is good and that which appears, or is generally acknowledged to be good. Identify the motivation at the source of things, rather than accepting (without questioning) the final product at face value. Fashions, fads, trends come and go…good design will always be good design. Taste is subjective, craftsmanship and technical skill are not — they are either well done, or badly done.”
— Rob Curry, associate director of fashion, 3-D Design
OTIS COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN, LOS ANGELES
New graduation plan:
Otis College of Art and Design launched the 38th annual exhibition online on May 8, featuring new work from graduating seniors highlighting projects in 10 academic departments, including fashion.
Historically, much of the Otis College campus has participated in a campus-wide annual exhibition that displayed a selection of graduating students’ best work in a gallery-like setting. In the move to a virtual event, Otis was able to showcase student work to a broader audience than was possible with an on-campus one. But this year was to mark the first time the college’s annual fashion show was also going to be included during the annual exhibition. Since the pandemic derailed that plan, work from this year’s graduating fashion design class will be included in next year’s show in May 2021.
Career counseling: Otis College has been contacting partners at affiliated fashion and design companies to walk them through the process of navigating the online exhibition, and staying in touch with those companies that had already offered jobs to Otis students to see if any additional opportunities have come up or changed.
Student wisdom:
“These are unprecedented and tough times for sure. However, I know Otis worked hard to make sure that we would still have opportunities outside of school by getting us in touch with recruitment agencies and letting us speak directly to experts who had been through recessions before. Otis trained me to be resilient and to adapt. I believe I have the tools to readjust to whatever the market will need in the future, whether that’s finding mask/clothing solutions or designing adjustable sizing built into the clothes themselves due to people exclusively buying through e-commerce. I’ve been on the receiving end of a lot of compassion and problem-solving from my teachers during these uncertain times. Thanks to that, and the technology we all quickly turned to, I was able to finish up my senior year with confidence. I’ve been handed a lot of tools, and I believe there’s a future for me in the industry.
— Hayley Jo Leibl, class of 2020
“There is always a way to make things possible. I learned to be multifaceted and strong going ahead.”
— Nicole Martin, class of 2020
“As I embark on my new journey as a fashion designer and leave school behind, and the future of fashion goes through its transition, these dark days that plague us will be over soon. I’m certain, being one of the many new fashion design graduates I will thrive and help the world and fashion thrive since again.”
— Román Gonzales Pena, class of 2020
“As we come out from this pandemic, it’s clear that now more than ever, we as future designers in the fashion industry have to hold ourselves responsible for being creative while practicing sustainability.”
— Verona Tu, class of 2020
Faculty wisdom:
“Our students worked diligently and patiently this semester. These uncertain times tested their desire to become great designers, showing that nothing could stop them from reaching their goals and succeeding in the future. They will continue to challenge their ideas and stretch their skills to reach limitless potential. The future is waiting. They will embrace the challenges, go with confidence and create the world they imagined for themselves…”
— Jill Zeleznik, fashion department chair, Otis College of Art and Design
“Otis College of Art and Design is a place of learning that I highly respect for their standard of excellence. When I was presented with this unique opportunity to mentor the 2020 senior fashion students I jumped at the chance. In the process, I was enlightened to a new, even greater understanding of their commitment to learning as displayed by the students’ enthusiasm and the faculty as well. The fashion students are exceptional, supported and talented.
“While students will not experience the traditional ceremony and gathering of a graduation, what this time period shows us going forward is that our skill sets are essential in this world. Students can gain from this experience a far greater lesson of resilience and this notion that ‘I can overcome.’ Fashion is about being creative, forward thinking, ground breaking and pushing boundaries. This situation presents that very opportunity for students to create their interpretation of a graduation cap and gown look and set-up their virtual ceremony inviting friends and family. The foundation they have gained at Otis will give them the confidence to manifest their future. I’m sure we will see more from the students as they grow to take their place as contributors to the world of fashion, art and beauty. Congratulations class of 2020!”
— Ruth Carter, Oscar-winning costume designer and senior class mentor
KENT STATE UNIVERSITY, KENT, OH
New graduation plan:
The university’s spring graduation ceremony pivoted to an online experience held May 9, during which Kent State’s president Todd Diacon, interim senior vice president and provost Melody Tankersly, and college and campus deans spoke. Each graduating senior received individual name recognition and participated in the conferral of their degree. Each student was mailed a gradation package, which included a cap/mortar board, tassel, alumni pin, diploma cover and more. All spring 2020 students will be invited back to campus for commencement when it has been deemed safe to do so.
The annual fashion show also went on. Back in March, after it was announced that Kent State’s campus would be closed and students were sent home to finish their classes remotely, they pivoted to a virtual show they called “Fashion Show 2.0.” Students made final tweaks to their garments in their at-home makeshift studios and held at-home photo shoots in backyards and against brick walls, tree limbs and fences. Then, the senior merchandising team took those creations and turned them into a digital experience featuring more than 100 pieces by 45 students that launched online on April 24.
Career counseling:
Career counseling has continued digitally, with the internship team meeting with students daily via Zoom and chatting over the phone to offer career counseling and guidance. Some students have been able to secure remote internships, but because many summer internships have been postponed or canceled altogether due to the uncertainty in the fashion industry, many students have been offered full-time jobs once offices reopen. Academic advisers have also been available daily for remote counseling.
Student wisdom:
“I think the best way to get through this uncertainty is to keep an open mind. Yes, it’s a rough time for all of us in the industry, but if we take a step back and work together we can get through this. The fashion industry is ever-changing and now is the time to look at how everyone involved can make a difference. This is just one hurdle that myself and my peers will experience. And after, we will see that the world can take a better approach in a slower fashion — along with taking life in a more positive direction and thinking about our family and friends more than our material possessions. Just keep your head up!”
— Zachary Tatoczenko, fashion design senior, B.F.A.
“To answer this question, let me get all of the clichés out of the way first. It’s all going to be OK. We’ll get through this together. It may be hard now but you’ll come out on the other end stronger. Now let’s get real. Before this pandemic began, I was already having a rough year personally, so when all of this happened it kind of felt like I was in a minefield where no matter which way I turned everything kept blowing up in my face. I quickly realized though that everything that had happened to me this year was something I could use to my advantage. One of the most insightful things someone ever told me about the fashion industry is to never stop working. If you aren’t in your desired field of work and you’re still job searching, don’t stop designing, don’t stop paying attention to trends, don’t stop whatever it is that your employer would want to see, because what they want to see is that you still have the skills and the knowledge to do your job and to do it well. So do this. Use the age we live in to your advantage. Yes, companies may no longer be hiring, and yes, you may have to move home and live with your parents, but that shouldn’t deter you from following your dreams. Use the time you now have to boost your portfolio, work on new projects, increase your online presence or even just to create an Instagram to display your work, anything helps. You never know who may stumble on your feed or your web site (or who may receive an unsolicited email that you sent with your portfolio attached). Use this time to create your own opportunities, don’t just wait for one to come to you, because once you overcome the obstacles that you’ve put in your own way, there should be no one and nothing to stop you from following your dream.”
— Isabella Diorio, fashion design senior, B.F.A.
Faculty wisdom:
“Everyone in the nation is facing similar challenges and coming to terms with a new normal in modern times. When you are applying for jobs in the near future, use this experience as an opportunity to highlight your adaptability and creativity on how to overcome these challenges to complete your degree and showcase your work in an innovative way. Take this time to challenge yourself to think outside the box!”
— Chanjuan Chen, assistant professor, Kent State University School of Fashion
“Fashion voices are needed now more than ever! Opportunities for innovation abound despite the obvious obstacles associated with the current crisis. The intimacy of fashion need not be compromised, for example, but can be reconsidered via virtual interfaces. In addition to providing access to new market segments, online Zooming invites emerging designers to tend to an almost microscopic scale of craft and detail. Curation, performance and choreography are also being transformed.”
— Sue Hershberger Yoder, assistant professor, Kent State University School of Fashion
