Spot Conlon x Reader [Soulmate AU]
Imagine: Being Spot’s soulmate, but neither of you have even met. Both going through a very lonely time in your lives, and all you really want is to meet eachother and have someone to talk to and to love.
*inspired by the song “IDK you yet” , Alexander 23*
Thinking of making this into a oneshot, tbh.

Jack Kelly wasn't a family guy, but he always wished he was. Not that he didn't believe that the newsies were his family, because they were. Just not in the way that he would've liked. Jack found often found himself needing a hug, some encouraging words after a long day at work, or even just a pat on the back. But he never received them. Not from the newsies, no. He was always the one offering, but he never received.
Not until he met David Jacobs. His first interaction with Dave's family had been slightly awkward. He observed as the family worked around each other, how they seemed to understand each other perfectly. It was as if Jack hadn't even been there. Never one to overstay his welcome, and not one to stay in a situation he felt out of place in, Jack left the second the opportunity came about.
The second time he was around the family, he felt much more incorporated. Esther bossed him around as if he were her own, and Mayer gave him the long-awaited fatherly pat on the back as he told Jack he was 'welcome to stay anytime.'
They took quickly to Jack; they insisted he came over during every holiday and there was never a day he visited that he didn't also stay the night. Soon enough, they were sending him daily lunches and attempting to enroll him in classes at David's school. And although Jack kindly denied the classes, he appreciated the sentiment more than he could express. He was never one who enjoyed being fawned over, but the feeling of familial love had started to change his mind on that fact.
After David and Jack's first fight (the first one post-strike), the latter was ruined. He felt as if he had no-one to turn to. Esther and Mayer had been there for him at every instance since he had met David. It didn't feel right to now talk to them.
Jack didn't know who to talk to, or where to go. He found himself wandering the streets. Beating himself up and wallowing in some form of self-pity. He hadn't even realized they had been in a fight until David had stormed off and told Jack to never speak to him again. It made the boy sick to imagine a life without the Jacob's family.
Santa Fe came to mind. All Jack had to do was run away and pretend like these people had never existed. And he almost did it too. Tears stained his red cheeks and his head pounded from how many times he had hit himself with his palm. Stupid, stupid, stupid, chanted aloud with each smack.
But as Jack counted his money and planned his escape to Santa Fe, a gentle hand grabbed his own. Through teary eyes, he looked up to see Esther smiling softly down out him. She kneeled down next to him and wiped at the child's cheek. "Oh, poor boy. Are you alright?"
"Don't need to do me more charity, Mrs. Jacobs." Jack replied coldly. "Dave already told me where I stand with your family."
Esther shook her head. "David gets passionate about things sometimes. You should know that best. You did lead a strike with him after all."
"Well, I guess I don't know 'im as well as I thought."
"Listen, Jack." Esther started, gently. "You're family now. Family doesn't abandon family. Do you think Mayer and I were entirely thrilled when David came home on his second day of work and told us he was involved in a strike?"
"... I 'spose not."
"But we backed him up anyways. No matter how scared we were. Now, family's fight. I mean, Sarah and David fight all the time! I mean obviously you and David had a different..." Esther paused, contemplating her words. "Relationship than them. But that doesn't mean that you two can just have one fight and never speak to each other again." She pushed Jack's hair back lovingly and rubbed his cheek. "Now let's get you up to the house and get this all figured out."
And just like that, Santa Fe had disappeared deep into the back of his mind. All it took was Esther's soothing voice and the caring touch of her hand.

I’m so glad that we’ve mostly gotten away from making crutchie the “small innocent too-pure-for-this-world” newsie. While he is loyal to the end, I like to think that he has a sort of mean sense of humor and swears and trips people with his crutch just cause he can. But when it really comes down to it he will be there for the other newsies and will stay up all night just listening to them talk, etc. but he’s not this small innocent guy. None of them are. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

actually i can make a whole post on this.
92sies is the better storyline and literally only because jack is less personable, the whole movie gets “tanked” (literally speaking this movie flopped). this jack isn’t in the moment at all and i guess that’s the “dreamer” aspect but also no it’s just lazy acting
like even his backstory is more compelling in 92sies, it’s detailed, it’s filled with lies and tragedy and it makes jack INTERESTING but for some reason like. christian bale was not compelling! like jack’s real name is something totally different (fuck francis sullivan we hate francis sullivan if you don’t look at it it can’t hurt you) and his dads in jail and his mom’s dead and i’m more worried about what davey’s thinking than jack’s reaction. how is that possible bro.
maybe it’s because theater is genuinely amazing as an artistic concept but bway jack no matter which actor is so much more reactive and visual and physicalized. than 92sies jack. like if that jack was in 92sies’s plot? oh my god. i’d be weeping bro i’d be angry and sad and shocked etc the whole movie right along with him tbh…
like 92sies jack is more interesting than bway jack but bway jack is much more characterized than 92sies jack.

the question of the ages-
ralbert, redfinch, or spralbert??????
oh my god ok this is a struggle (thank you for the ask though) - i'm also going to assume you're talking about livesies here because if not it's sprace for me in 1992sies personally
but for me...Ralbert because in the musical it makes the most sense. Race and Albert are seen together quite a lot and are obviously close friends, Race lets Al take his cigar and well he is annoyed (hey! that's my cigar) he doesn't get angry at him (like when he does when Buttons insinuates that "He traded her for a box of cigars" about his mother). they interact more in King of New York and are usually next to each other. also i enjoy Ralbert a lot because they're 2 of my favorite characters!!
on Redfinch, I don't think of them (Finch and Al) as particularly close and Finch is not as much of a character as Albert and Race are, but maybe that was just me not noticing him as much. though I like the idea of Albert liking Race and him not liking him back and ending up with Finch, mainly because of @crystallizedtwilight's art. (go check them out, their art is so good!!!)
Spralbert (just checking this is Spot, Race and Albert) doesn't make the most sense to me, just because Spot doesn't really interact with either of them at all, just in the same way livesies Sprace makes no sense because Race and Spot don't even talk.
hope this was a good answer (i could talk for hours) but Ralbert is definitely my favorite and I just wrote a Ralbert fic on ao3 so go read it if you haven't - it's called "Just Admit You're Wrong" and my acc is pinetree603 (i'm working on a javid prompt fill right now)
RALBERT
edit: i lowkey just realized this is a nonsensical audhd rant so feel free to disregard

Who is the dad of the group in Wallflower AU because I feel like its Specs but something tells me other wise
There are a few dads in the group.
For the Manhattan Bunch, Specs and Jack are both dads in their own ways !
Specs has an open door policy and people tend to crash at his house a lot because his parents aren’t around he he has his own place. His house has this sort of ‘safe’ feeling to it. A lot of the group can sleep easier at Specs’ house than they can in their own - Bumlets’ house is the same but that’s because his parents adopted all his friends, he isn’t responsible enough to be a group dad. /affectionate
Some live with Specs permanently, as in they have moved in with him. Dutchie, Blink, Skittery & Tumble, Spike (OC) and Elmer. (In order of who moved in from first to most recently in the Wallflower Timeline) The others refer to them as “The Specs Household”.
And most of the wingmen have keys to his house ! The wingmen being Specs, Skittery, Bumlets, Racer, Blink, Swifty, Dutchie, Pie-Eater, Snoddy and Katherine.
Jack’s the dad in the sense he’s someone the others go to when they need to talk. When he escapes Snyder he ends up moving in with Medda and Crutchie and Medda also has an open door policy for the group. In terms of Jack and Specs though, Specs has his open door policy, Jack has his “Always available” policy. Meaning the others can message/call him at ANY time. He doesn’t care if he’s sleeping and they wake him, he’ll pick up.
He never has his phone on silent for this reason - He’d much rather one of his friends call and wake him than deal with an issue by themselves.
That and he’s the sort of leader of the Manhattan group? That sort of automatically makes him a parental figure so some of the slightly younger ones.
Henry also sort of falls into a parental role but specifically for The Bros. (Henry, Finch, JoJo, Buttons and Elmer) He just has to babysit them because they’re idiots.
Now, the dads of the BROOKLYN Bunch are Hot-Shot and Graves, as I’ve mentioned in previous posts, they’re some of the oldest. Graves has always been there for everyone through everything they’ve gone through, and Hot-Shot is always on call if people need support.
But overall, the group as a whole (Both Hattan and Brooklyn) It’s probably Jack and/or Specs.

Problematic Aspects of Newsies (1992)
I love Newsies. That’s an understatement. I LOVE Newsies. The music, the characters, the turn of the century time period, the history, the underdog story that ends with children victorious over adults. I adore this story with my whole heart and soul.
That said, I think it is really important to discuss the aspects of Newsies that I love ... less. Weak writing, character assassination, questionable things that creep me out and make me want to ask the creative team behind this musical “WTF were you thinking?” I’ll be honest, I personally think the Broadway stage show has a lot more problematic elements in it’s writing that I’m itching to discuss. I still love it -- but yeah, there are several writing and character choices that make me cringe. This is NOT an attack on the production nor anyone’s love of the stage show. No drama here. Just a conversation I haven’t seen anyone have yet. But in good faith, I’ll discuss the weaknesses of Newsies (1992) film first.
Let me emphasize, I love this movie so much. I spent my fist summer with it watching it daily. Years later, I still love it, but can acknowledge the problematic elements of it.
I think the majority of problematic aspects in this film come from the lack of meaningful female characters. Newsies doesn’t pass the Bechtel test nor is it a feminist film. There are three named female characters, all of which have minuscule screen time. David’s mother Ester Jacobs appears once. Sarah Jacobs is David’s older sister and Jack’s love interest. She has one private conversation with Jack and then follows the newsies around as they organize the Children Crusade outside of the World Building, but has little to no personality outside of her relationship status to David and Jack (as a sister and love interest). Medda appears in two scenes and has the least loved songs in the film.
The lack of these three characters is such a disservice to both the story of Newises and the characters themselves. I know this because I read Newsies original script (when it was still a drama, not a musical) Hard Promises and all three women had more scenes and meaningful interactions with Jack and David. Sarah was vocal about her Socialist political stance and supported the strike. She called Jack out on his decision to scab when no one else would. Ester impulsively slapped David out of fear and anger when he announced the strike to his family. Her reaction raised the stakes and told the audience the newsies may be children, but the strike was more serious than a child’s play and affected more than just the kids. Meda was one of the few adults supporting the strike and the newsies with respect.
Watering these characters down weakens the story. How are David and Jack supposed to react and be influenced by those around them when the people (i.e. women) around them barely say or do anything?
There are also no female newsies in the ensamble cast either. Historically most of the newsies were boys. But girls were newsies too. Girl newsies even had their own Lodging House, so they did exist, but the film fails to represent them in any way. Luckily, the Broadway stage show was able to include them, so at least that was remedied.
Another problematic aspect of Newsies is the Delancy’s sexual harassment of Sarah when they attack the Jacobs siblings. The way they touch Sarah (grabbing her waist and dragging her into an alley) and talk to her (calling her sweetheart and tootsie)/about her “we’ve got the best part of your family right here.”) carries a super rapey undertone. It’s uncomfortable and completely unnecessary.
Compare the Delancy’s attack on Sarah to their attack on Les in the same scene. Neither are their true target, who happens to be David. Les gets pushed into a mud puddle, then thrown into a pile of empty metal jugs. The Delancy brothers are capable of bullying without bullying through sexual harassment. On a narrative level, we already know the Delancys are bad guys. This scene isn’t to establish how bad they or or that they are worse than the viewer thought. So they don’t get any more bad guy points for sexually harassing Sarah. The Delancy’s could have treated Sarah more like Les. Knock her basket out of her hands, push her down -- you know, be bullies -- but ultimately let go of her and keep their hands off her.
Sarah doesn’t have many scenes or dialog in the film, so to still include her being sexually harassed in one of her few scenes is incredibly insulting to her character. Violence against women is too socially and culturally accepted, especially in film. Nothing in the scene demands their attack against her be sexualized. So why was it?
If the story wanted to Jack to come to the rescue and decide his friendship with the Jacobs siblings is more important than turning scab, it could have been done another way. Again, I know this for a fact because Hard Promises, the original screenplay, DID it. In Hard Promises Les was was injured accidentally while striking and Jack rushed to his rescue because Les’s safety was more important than any deal with Pulitzer. So a scene including anyone being attacked and sexually harassed was completely unnecessary.
Newsies is a wonderful, joyful story based on some really interesting historical events. It’s well loved for a reason, but that doesn’t automatically make it perfect or exempt from criticism. I really wish the 1992 film gave these female characters more screen time and agency because imagine how much better Newsies could be! As fans we have the power to “correct” these problematic elements in our headcanons and fanfic and our conversations within the fandom. Instead of saying how boring Sarah is and pretending she doesn’t exist, we can instead re-frame the conversation as damn, the movie really did Sarah (and all of the other female characters) dirty. Because it sure did.

telling someone to kill themselves is boring and unoriginal. telling someone “i hope your significant other hates newises 1992 and loves livesies” is sinister, wicked and a very real possibility.

Blink and Mush’s First Real Kiss
Whenever Blink got a new wound from anywhere, Mush would always kiss it, every day till it was healed, like clockwork. He never meant anything romantic by it, it was a thing that started when they were just little kids and Mush felt like he needed to take care of him whenever he got hurt. Blink enjoyed it a little too much as he got older, until he finally snapped.
Tumblr media
This is sloppy and cringey and hard to follow but it took forever so here it is! (Mush is only supposed to be kissing Blinks cheek in that first part, Ik its hard to tell. he got a scar there from a fight a week before.)
