I'm not sure how many of the old writeblr folks are still here who might remember me talking about my novel and my OCs, Victor (l) and Alistair (r)? I know I talked a lot about them on here for a while.
Anyway I recently picked it up again and fell in love with them all over again so! Whether or not you've seen them before, ask me some questions for/about them and I'll answer them with a lil doodle!

Identity redraw featuring Rudy and Nihi. Did my best to replicate the original art style because I found it very sexy. Ramdayo's art is very sexy.
Don't tell people that Rudy isn't human but actually a sentient danmaku bullet.

😎 Alistair!!
@bloodlessheirbyjacques 👀🔥
Aaaa thank you!!
My boy Alistair is from Impartial, the second protagonist!
WIP Page | WIP Tag | Vibe Tag | Character Tag
Alistair is an expert at deflection. He doesn't like talking about himself and he doesn't like probing questions and he's really good at redirecting conversations to the point that you won't notice until hours later that he never actually did answer your question
He can act like everything's fine like nobody's business, but when directly confronted, he's actually a pretty bad liar. He gets evasive, avoids eye contact. You might not be able to guess the truth, but you can definitely tell he's lying.
He actually loves hugs and cuddling and platonic closeness, but there are very few people that he'll let close enough. pretty much only his sisters and, later on in their friendship, Victor. He really misses it, though, that closeness. He's pretty touch-starved.
Pretty much everyone in Pravafield prefers sweet liqueurs and cocktails when drinking, anything that's sweet and easy to drink. Alistair is one of very few people who habitually drinks straight liquors, preferably brandy. People always look at him funny for that, but he doesn't like things that are too sweet.
Send 😎 and a character name and I'll tell you 4 fun facts!

Happy Blorbo Blursday! Hope you are having a great day.
This is for a character of your choice: Is your character more dominant or submissive to the people around them? Do they tend to follow others' orders and wait for people to give them instruction in life, or do they charge ahead and make decisions on their own?
Thank you so much for the question! And I hope you're having a great day too!
This is such an interesting question and I have a hard time deciding who I want to answer it for. But I think it would be most interesting to consider it for a character where it's not clear cut and I have to actually think about it. So I'm gonna pick Finch, a supporting character in Impartial.
Finch has never been good at following orders or doing what they are told, even when they were young. Even among the fairly anti-authoritarian Roamers where they grew up, they defied any and all structure and rules. They always preferred to make their own choices, even if it ended badly for them.
At the same time, I wouldn't call them dominant, exactly. They don't like taking charge of anyone but themselves, they're not interested in the responsibility that brings. Finch will gladly leave the giving orders to other people, as long the orders aren't directed at them. Most of all they want to be left to their own devices and look after their own interest.
If they take charge in any way, it will be in the shadows, pulling strings from where no one can actually see them. They're not interested in recognition, power or respect. They just want results.
Ohhhh this was fascinating, thank you!

Hi Ace! 👀 - An excerpt from my WIP
👑 - A random fact about one of my OCs
🦀 - A favourite piece of dialogue
☀️ - Current word count
❄️ - Toughest aspect of my WIP
🍕 - My characters' favourite foods
⚽️ - Genre of my WIP (For the "Learn About My WIP!" game!)
Oh wow thank you so much!!
👀 - An excerpt from my WIP
The Trusty Servant was dipped in gloom and smoke as it always was. It was also full to bursting, a hundred voices melting into a pool of noise. It wasn‘t like the noise in the arena though—it wasn‘t all centred around Victor, piercing him from all sides. Crushing him. It felt like something safer, something to dive into and hide behind. Of course he and Finlay drew a few gazes when they entered—they always did. But their presence here was also familiar enough that people knew to leave them alone. That‘s what you did in the Servant. You minded your own business. Even tonight.
👑 - A random fact about one of my OCs
Victor has actually no idea how to deal with people--at least as an equal. He was taught that he's above everyone else and rarely ever even came into contact with anyone of his own status, besides his parents and his childhood friend Finlay. When he first moves out of Ealdor Hall, he is completely inept at social interactions and it's very much a fake it til you make it type situation. That's the main reason he has a reputation for being rude and arrogant. He does try, he just has no idea how.
🦀 - A favourite piece of dialogue
"Do you need any help or--?" "Piss off." The boy turned his head, glaring at him, and it was more than obvious that he was completely hammered. It was also more than obvious that he was not of age. Victor shrugged. "I just wanted to be nice." "Yeah? Well I just wanted you to piss off!"
This is from Victor and Alistair's first meeting that I mentioned in my earlier post. I really enjoy that whole scene tbh.
☀️ - Current word count
The new draft is at 3,775 words. The previous draft uh... somewhere north of 415,000 words.
❄️ - Toughest aspect of my WIP
Two things, tbh. One is the fact that there is no written language in Pravafield. Makes the worldbuilding so much more complicated, trying to figure out how a major city works without books, newspapers, messages, letters, records, legal texts etc etc.
Second is the strategy of a rebellion/war. I am not a strategist, I know nothing about military tactics. And yet I have somehow to figure out a way to make it realistic and believable.
🍕 - My characters' favourite foods
Victor has a bit of a sweet tooth. He really likes pastries and danishes, esp with nuts and spices.
Alistair loves soups and stews, everything that's warm and comforting that he can cling to.
⚽️ - Genre of my WIP
Steampunk / Dystopian

This is for the character building questions.
3, 4, 5.
aaa thank you so much!!
Character building questions
I'm gonna do these for Victor and Alistair just to feed my obsession djghlkdj
Victor
3. Is your character’s current life anything like he/she expected it to turn out?
I think at no point in his life did Victor envision his future anything like this. As a kid, he knew the only path in his future was taking over his father's position as General of the Guarda one day. Throughout his youth and adolescence and his education this prospect became more and more loathsome to him; he didn't want the position and he didn't think he'd be any good at it and neither did, it seemed, anyone else, his father included. But there was no choice for him in the matter. This went right up to the point that Victor would rather envision no future at all than the one that was laid out for him. I don't think renouncing his title and leaving his family's home was something he ever really thought about or planned, right up until the moment that he snapped and just did it. He was too young to really understand what was making him so miserable and why, he just knew he couldn't stay in that house for a second longer. It was either death or this--and so he made the harder but less drastic choice. It was very difficult for him, those first few years, learning what to do with his new-found freedom, figuring out how he actually wanted to spend his life, until he discovered his passion and talent for fencing at university, and everything just kind of aligned from there.
(man, it is hard to talk about Victor's childhood without giving too much away.... also, this got rather long so I'll be putting the rest under a cut 🙈)
4. Which parent, guardian, family member, or mentor does your character take after most, and is that significant? How?
Haaaaa damn this is gonna be even harder to talk about.
To be honest, I think he actually takes after his mother the most. He's got her individualism, her sense of displacement, of not belonging anywhere and constantly wanting to be somewhere else. He's got a good bunch of her selfishness and her love of luxury, too, though he does work on that later on. He's even got something of the Roamers' sense of community, even though his mother left her culture behind long before she was born--but some things you never quite unlearn. It's definitely significant, because his father and his tutor spent his childhood trying to shape him into exactly who they wanted him to be, and that was definitely not his mother. His father wanted a perfect successor, a skilled, level-headed and strong tactician and a disciplined soldier, capable of not just giving but also receiving orders (namely, his). His tutor, well ... wanted something else entirely. And he may tell Victor that they are alike just to rile him up, because he knows Victor would hate nothing more. But he doesn't actually know Victor as well as he thought, in the end.
5. What from your character’s past has influenced how he or she currently interacts with the world?
Oh god, I give. I think it's impossible to answer this question without getting at least somewhat into the nitty-gritty of Victor's childhood trauma, so what the hell.
Victor was lied to, a lot, as a kid. Was gaslit, and I mean this in the true sense of the word; a deliberate and systematic web of lies designed to make him question his own senses and sanity. And what's more, a big part of this was that he was made to seem like the liar. His tutor would twist his words and manipulate him to make it seem like Victor constantly lied and made up stories--for attention, to get out of trouble, or any number of other reasons. Very soon, Victor's parents wouldn't believe a single word out of his mouth, no matter what he said--exactly what his tutor was trying to achieve. As a result, the concept of "truth" is a very subjective one to Victor. When he realised that no one believed him whether or not he told the truth, he did start to lie very deliberately, sometimes for specific reasons, sometimes just for the heck of it. He tried to find out how far he could take his lies, where people drew the line, and if there were any lies that he could present in such a way that they were thought to be the truth. After all, his parents had to believe in some truth or another--if he told them exactly what they were already convinced was the truth--would they believe it, or would they still think it to be a lie? Long after Victor moved out of Ealdor Hall, he has not quite lost this tendency of habitually lying, though he does it more subtly now, with gentle exaggerations and careful omissions. He's constructed a thick armour of lies around himself, so no one can use the truth against him ever again.
Alistair
3. Is your character’s current life anything like he/she expected it to turn out?
Kind of? I mean, being part of an underground group trying to uncover the city's secret is definitely a surprise, as is being close friends with not one but two Impartials. but ... going to university to get a law degree, trying to stay out of trouble, looking after his sisters, being expected to find a wife and have kids ... that's pretty much exactly what he expexted his life to entail.
4. Which parent, guardian, family member, or mentor does your character take after most, and is that significant? How?
Alistair and his sisters were raised only by their father, after their mother died during the youngest sister's birth. And, though he certainly wouldn't want to hear it, he does take after his father in some aspects. Though he's learned to control it well, he does have his father's temper and, when provoked enough, he will explode. He also has his father's pride, though it stems from slightly different sources. His father's pride is tied to the MacFarlance family name and he is very careful about upholding respectability and dignity and making sure that no one can look down on them, because they might not be of high rank, but they are peers. Alistair's pride is a more personal thing, and shows itself in refusing to ask for or accept help and the conviction that he needs to carry the world's problems on his shoulders. He never wants to be seen as weak or like he's not in control. In the end, though, both he and his father are all about keeping up appearances.
5. What from your character’s past has influenced how he or she currently interacts with the world?
Because of his father's aforementioned pride, Alistair had a very strict upbringing. His father has a very clear idea of how things are done right, and he expects his children to adhere to that idea absolutely. Alistair, as the eldest and only son, bore the brunt of this expectation. His father taught him very thoroughly that he represents the MacFarlane family whenever he is in public and he is to conduct himself accordingly. This is the source of Alistair's completely flawless manners and airtight politeness that even an earthquake couldn't shatter.
Oooof this did get long, didn't it? It was very fascinating and satisfying to write up, though, so thank you!! I hope this is in any way interesting, and bravo to you if you've made it all the way here jghlkjghlk 💜💜💜

😎 and I gotta go Holly because when I read her intro my brain totally did the Ghostwriter intro. ("We don't know where she came from." "She just showed up one day." "Who is that girl?!" "Holly!")
jahflkja omg I don't know that actually 😂 but it does sound like her! thank you!
Holly is a minor character from Impartial, one of the Nihidealists.
WIP Page | WIP Tag | Vibe Tag |
Holly can never sit still. She loves to move, she loves dancing, but she also likes exercising, and she's pretty good at it. When Victor teaches the Nihidealists the basics of fencing, she's the one who picks it up the quickest.
No one knows anything about Holly's family. She doesn't talk about them and she doesn't seem to be spending much, if any, time at home, so they're probably not in the picture, but that's all anyone can say.
Holly sometimes gets multiple new crushes a day. She can fall in love with someone's vibes almost immediately, and she's rarely ever wrong about her impression. It's entirely intuitive, but she's actually a pretty good judge of character.
She loves to gossip and speculate about other people's love lives, too. She's one of the first people to suspect there might be something more between Victor and Alistair. She doesn't meddle, but she watches very curiously.
This was fun!! Haven't thought much about Holly in a while so thank you for this!!
Send 😎 and a character name and I'll tell you 4 fun facts!

13, 19 & 26 for the character asks!
thank you!!!
Character Building Questions
Once again I'll do these for Victor and Alistair!
Victor
13. What’s one secret your character never wants to share (whether or not said secret does get shared)?
This is a surprisingly difficult question to answer. Victor has so many secrets, but pretty much all of them at least one person knows about. Finlay definitely knows most of them, so I'm trying to think of something Victor wouldn't even tell Finlay. Hmm... I think Victor would hide some of the coping mechanisms he adopts after moving out of Ealdor Hall to deal with his trauma, because he's worried they make him sound too crazy. Finlay knows about the most obvious ones of course, like the drugs and the risky behaviour and spending as little time as possible at home. But he doesn't know that when Victor's home alone he covers all the mirrors in his flat because he always thinks he sees something moving in them from the corner of his eyes. He doesn't know about the hours and hours Victor spends obsessively training, especially at night, to distract himself and tire himself out. He doesn't know that Victor still hears his tutor's voice all the time, telling him to stand up straight or speak clearly or stop shaking and that, most of the time, Victor obeys.
19. How does your character define–or even merely think of–success? Has that character achieved success, even in part?
For a long time, Victor thinks of success as achieving something, anything, on his own merit, without receiving any special treatment because of his name and status. And when he does achieve that, by winning his first fencing title, he realises it's not enough. It's not enough for him to have survived growing up in the Sleywrithe house, not while there are still so many others suffering by the hand of the Sleywrithes and the other Impartial families.
20. What’s one thing you know about your character that he/she doesn’t yet?
Oh, that very much depends on where in the story we are right now. If we are at the very start where I have recently begun my new draft, god, I know so many things. But if we're taking into account my last draft and everything I have written for that, there's not much remaining that he doesn't know. Except maybe that he hasn't suffered his last loss yet.
Alistair
13. What’s one secret your character never wants to share (whether or not said secret does get shared)?
What happened during his First Night with Susan, which is a bit of a sensitive topic that I won't go into here without some trigger warnings.
19. How does your character define–or even merely think of–success? Has that character achieved success, even in part?
Most of Alistair's life his only goal is to take care of his sisters and keep them safe until they're of age and can take care of themselves, which he does achieve, so I think he does consider that a success. Beyond that he has a fairly traditional idea of what success means--getting a good education and a good job, having a career, starting a family, upholding the good family name--the values that his father taught him. He doesn't particularly want to do any of these things, except to get a good education, but he feels like he has no choice in the matter. It's not until he meets Victor that he really understands there are much more important things to achieve in life.
20. What’s one thing you know about your character that he/she doesn’t yet?
That he will be the catalyst for a bigger change than he can imagine.

😎 victor
Thank you for the ask!!!
Victor is the main character of Impartial, the one who started it all.
WIP Page | WIP Tag | Vibe Tag | Character Tag
Victor has a very dry and laconic sense of humour that most people don't detect when they first meet him. They take his words at face value and therefore often think he's much more of an arrogant ass than he actually is. ... not that he's not an arrogant ass. He is. But not as much as most people think.
Victor moved out of his parents' house very young and bought his own apartment with the first prize money he earned through fencing. He wouldn't willingly spend another second in Ealdor Hall - his father's estate - but he actually hates living alone. He hates the quiet and how it leaves so much more space for the voices. That's why he goes out almost every night and spends as little time as possible alone in his flat, whiling away the hours in bars and opium dens and other people's beds.
One of the reasons Victor lets his hair grow out so long and is a little obsessed with grooming it and showing it off is that it sets him apart from the Sleywrithe family. He's got the Sleywrithe eyes from his father and his facial structure carries traits of both of his parents, but his black hair is distinctly and absolutely his mother's. His relationship with his mother is complicated and they are often at odds, but it is leagues better than that with his father; Victor has acquired a hatred for the Sleywrithe family and desperately wants to distance himself from them.
Victor hates someone shouting his name, it still makes him freeze with fear that he's done something wrong. But his fencing career has somewhat desensitised him to it, what with the audience chanting his name in the stands. It still makes him shiver every time, though.
Aaaaa god look at my fucked up, traumatised boy. I love him so much 😭😭😭
Send 😎 and a character name and I'll tell you 4 fun facts!
hahaha fun facts, was it?

This is for the Alphabet Soup Game:
A and N
Thank you!!
A has got to be Alistair MacFarlane, of course, second main character of Impartial.
Alistair is a nobleman a few years younger than Victor--of a lower status than him, of course, but they did both grow up in Hallwich Hill.
The first time they meet, however, is quite outside of their social circles, when they run into each other drinking at the Trusty Servant. Alistair is still underage but very drunk and quite rude, and Victor is amused and curious, but it takes years for them to meet again after this.
By then Alistair has grown up and been forced to learned some manners. He's soft-spoken and polite and attentive, which of course only makes Victor more curious about what kind of guy he is. So he decides they're going to be friends. Alistair is not consulted in the matter.
Alistair has two younger sisters, Nessa and Bonnie.
He always dresses well and is very neat.
He's sincere to the point that you wonder if he's making fun of you.
He does have a sense of humour, but it's very subtle at first. Only once he knows you really well will he let out the snark.
He can keep a conversation going for hours without ever talking about himself.
Very good at deflecting.
You Do Not want to make him mad. He will fuck you up.
Tumblr media
I know I'm not supposed to have favourites but. I love Alistair so much. He's my favourite.
Now N ... N is for Navari, secondary character in Bolt as Brass.
Navari is the third in the main trio, made up of her, Lessandero and Demian, but these days she often feels like it's becoming more of a duo.
When they were younger it was more reliably the three of them together, but as they grew up and their interests and priorities changed, Demian started spending more time with Lessandero than her.
She doesn't really dislike Lessandero, but she does resent him for putting this distance between her and Lucky, who is the closest thing she has to a family--and vice versa.
But she is fiercely independent and Lucky is the only one she'd sacrifice anything for. She does have to give Lessandero credit that Demian is much happier when he's around.
Navari is falcas, but she never really came into contact with her culture, growing up on the streets.
Her name was given to her in the orphanage where she spent her first few years and is one of the most generic falcas names. It means "youngest one".
She secretly hates her irin, the calcified deposits falcas have on their face, in her case on her forehead, that's why she always wears her hair with a fringe to cover them.
She has adapted some serious RBF and don't-fuck-with-me attitude out of necessity, but by nature she's a very outgoing and sociable person who loves to laugh.
Tumblr media
Absolutely still one of my fave pics of Navari.
Send me a letter and I'll tell you about an OC starting with that letter.
Curious?
If you want me to put you on my tag list for Impartial or Bolt as Brass, let me know!

Character Flaws Tag
I got tagged for this by @dreamswithadashofspice. Thank you!
I’ma do this one for Demian from Bolt as Brass!

It looks like very little but I think that 18 flaws is plenty in one character... but now I’m curious. I’m gonna do it for Lessandero too and see how they compare.
absent-minded | abusive | addict | aggressive | aimless | alcoholic | anxious | arrogant | audacious | bad liar | big mouth | bigot | blindly obedient | blunt | callous| childish | chronic heroism | clingy | clumsy | cocky | competitive | corrupt | cowardly | cruel | cynical | delinquent | delusional | dependent | depressed | deranged | disloyal | ditzy | egotistical | envious | erratic | fickle | finicky | flaky | frail | fraudulent | guilt complex | gloomy | gluttonous | gossiper | gruff | gullible | hedonistic | humorless | hypochondriac | hypocritical | idealist | idiotic | ignorant | immature | impatient | incompetent | indecisive | insecure | insensitive | lazy | lewd | liar | lustful | manipulative | masochistic | meddlesome | melodramatic | money-loving | moody | naive | nervous | nosy | ornery | overprotective | overly sensitive | paranoid | passive-aggressive | perfectionist | pessimist | petty | power-hungry | proud | pushover | reckless | reclusive | remorseless | rigorous | sadistic | sarcastic | senile | selfish | self-martyr | shallow | sociopathic | sore loser | spineless | spiteful | spoiled | stubborn | tactless | temperamental | timid | tone-deaf | traitorous | unathletic | ungracious | unlucky | unsophisticated | untrustworthy | vain | withdrawn | workaholic
25 for Lessandero! This is fascinating to see, I actually learned something about them in the process! Looking through these you wouldn’t think that these two are best friends :D I guess opposites attract!
I tag anyone who reads this and is wearing black in this moment!

OC Creation Q&A: Victor
I got tagged by @converginglives, thanks so much! This is so cool! :D
1) What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)?
Weirdly, the first thing I knew about Victor was “his” genre. I had just learned about Steampunk, and I wanted to create a Steampunk character.
2) Did you design them with any other characters/OCs from their universe in mind?
Nope. Victor was the very first to exist, before I even had any significant kind of universe built around him.
3) How did you choose their name?
The day I created him I was sitting and chatting with a good friend and we considered names that a character like that may have. I knew I wanted it to be a name starting with V, and we considered some possibilities, but we quickly settled on Victor. I chose his last name (Townsend) because I wanted a typical upper/ upper middle class name for him (tho I might still change it; I’m not particularly attached to it and it seems there are some associations with that name). His second name (Samuel) I knew to be his fathers name, which I chose because of Samuel Vimes from the Discworld series. His third name was at first Vladimir, because he was supposed to be born in St. Petersburg as a son of diplomats, but as his background changed, I changed that, too.
4) In developing their backstory, what elements of the world they live in played the most influential parts?
The political and social structure of the world played quite a big part in positioning him within his universe.
5) Is there any significance behind their hair color?
Not necessarily, I just always imagined him as having black hair.
6) Is there any significance behind their eye color?
There is within the story, but originally I chose it again because I just liked the aesthetic of them.
7) Is there any significance behind their height?
No, he’s pretty average height.
8) What (if anything) do you relate to within their character/story?
I relate very closely to Victor - I relate to his depressive mindset, to some of his trauma, to his sarcasm as a defence mechanism, to his desire to take control of everything, to his perfectionism, to his attachments to other people and how he handles them, later on in the story to his apathy and inertia.
9) Are they based off of you, in some way?
I believe Victor got his depression from me. Sorry about that. I also think that his abuse trauma has a few aspects of my own experience in it.
10) Did you know what the OC’s sexuality would be at the time of their creation?
Not at all. Like most of my characters at the time, I believed Victor to be straight when I created them. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
11) What have you found to be most difficult about creating art for your OC (any form of art: writing, drawing, edits, etc.)?
To be honest I’ve never struggled much with writing Victor. He’s always come naturally to me, though sometimes it’s been hard to keep him sympathetic, to not make him too unlikeable in the reader’s eyes. As for art, though, I struggled for years and years to draw Victor the way I imagine him. I’ve got such a clear image of him in my mind, but I could never get it on paper. Fortunately, though, I’ve managed it by now.
12) How far past the canon events that take place in their world have you extended their story, if at all?
I know pretty everything significant that happens in Victor’s life before and after the events of Unanfechtbar, regardless of whether it appears in the story or not.
13) If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?
Control and Appearances.
14) What is something about your OC can make you laugh?
What I always say about Victor is that he can be remarkably stupid for a clever person. He’s really thick sometimes, particularly where social situations are concerned.
15) What is something about your OC can make you cry?
When I think about the events at the beginning of Unanfechtbar II, it’s enough to make me cry. Same goes for the time (before Unanfechtbar I) when he first moves out of his parents’ home. The way he struggles and loses his way is just heartbreaking.
16) Is there some element you regret adding to your OC or their story?
Not really. There’s a lot of bad stuff in Victor’s story, but it all makes sense and it all adds up in my eyes.
17) What is the most recent thing you’ve discovered about your OC?
I recently learned more about what Victor’s life was like after he moved out of his childhood home, the ways in which he struggled with being alone for the first time, the way being away from his abuser for the first time ironically made his life fall apart.
18) What is your favorite fact about your OC?
Victor is really good at public speaking and can easily captivate an audience, no matter what he’s speaking of. He could probably hold a speech about the digestive properties of cabbage and people would be fascinated. As someone who can write well but is rubbish at speaking well, that is amazing to me.
