2. What was your favorite film as a child?
It was very probably Toy Story. Depending on what you consider "child" aged, it also could have been one of several disaster movies.
4. Is there a film that you love except for the ending? What would you change about the ending?
Yeah. Return of the Jedi. The part where Vader goes "NOOOO!" It undermines Vader's subtle acting, which is really tough considering it's all body language.
7. Has a film ever given you nightmares?
I've had ones after watching war films where I'm suddenly at boot camp. Twister gave me nightmares for a while, because living in the Midwest, you know there's a non-zero chance of encountering a tornado, especially in the middle of the night (I've slept through sirens, oops).
12. Which movie has your favorite soundtrack?
Lord of the Rings The Two Towers
14. Who is your favorite director? Why?
Spielberg, hands down. His direction elevates already good material, for the most part. And you never feel cheated. If you want to feel a certain emotion, there's a Spielberg movie for that. Saving Private Ryan will sober you up, and Tintin will make you feel elated.
18. What film do you think has the coolest poster?
Tumblr media
This one. A friend from Scotland ordered this for me and it hangs right next to my desk.

Character ask game
Thank you @nitrateglow ☀️🌴
Tumblr swallowed your ask when I tried to draft it so I’m making a text post :)
Rico, Rico, Rico :))
1. My first impression of him
My first impression was bad. I thought he was a terrible homophobic little man 🤢.
2. When I think I truly started to like him.
It’s difficult to say because it’s been such a long time since I first watched the movie but I guess I think I can say I truly started to like him (after gradually finding him more and more amusing) in the scene where Joe wakes up from his nightmare. Joe says he doesn’t look gay and Rico says “what’s that supposed to mean” (he’s gay) and Joe says he’s so dangerous he’d kill Rico if he’d gotten to him earlier and Rico unimpressed says something like “I’m impressed, you’re a killer” (both iconic lines) and “I invited you didn’t I?” and it’s revealed he has no ulterior motives (other than getting that fridge up the stairs and some company). In that scene I just got him and I just fell head over heels for him as a character. Such an interesting little guy. And then that liking just grew as I got to them living together, dancing and Rico having his gay little fantasy ❤️ Definitely a character of all time.
3. A song that reminds me of him.
I don’t think I have a specific Rico song. I’ve got plenty of Joe and Rico songs however. So… I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. You Got It by Roy Orbison is a classic Joe/Rico song from Joe’s pov.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It just makes me think of Joe fighting for his life to get Rico to Florida, and his goal of taking care of Rico once they’re down there. (Although he knows in his heart it won’t happen).
4./5. How many people I ship him with / My favorite ship of his.
I’m combining these because it’s just Joe!
If he’d survived they would’ve gotten to grow old together 🥲
Thanks again 💕

Tumblr wouldn't let me tag you in a reply so I just wanted to say I have no problem with you leaving comments! I love talking with other Buster fanatics :) And yeah, Joe is basically a hot air balloon-- everything the dude ever said should be taken with a grain of salt.
hooray! and yeah that was my exact opinion when i was reading the doorstopper, lol, i was sitting there going "damn this man pioneered the field of used car salesmanship before used cars even existed"
you can tell he worked in a snake oil show :p

Do you know about the 1982 TV version of Wait Until Dark? It's basically just a filmed version of the stage play, but it's worth seeing at the very least its version of the Susy vs Roat showdown. Because the Roat in this goes the opposite route from Arkin-- he acts coked up as hell. Everything else is rather meh, especially compared to the awesome 67 movie, but you might get a kick out of the end.
oh wow that sounds hillarious XD. i was afraid to try out the play version because who can outdo what Arkin did for Roats? but now drunk Roat acting up would be so funny. he probably be saying to susy 'hey babe you should try this speed its great!' XD LOL

Movie friends!
Quick Poll:
A
Tumblr media
Or B:
Tumblr media
I'm buying one of them...I love them both and I cannot decide!
I love the design in Option A with Claude Rains' head in the key.
But I love the moodiness of Option B.
Both work with my paint and I need opinions!!
Though about putting a poll on Instagram, but none of my friends on there are classic movie fans...my tumblr pals get it, lol.

Thoughts on We Live Again (1934)
Tumblr media
Quick plot summary: A Russian prince who briefly dabbled in socialist philosophy abandons his ideals once he joins the military and rubs elbows with decadent high society. He seduces and impregnates an innocent peasant girl, who bears his child alone. Eventually the two cross paths again when the prince is serving as a juror and the young woman is tried for a murder she did not commit. Guilt-stricken, he aims to redeem himself by saving her from hard labor in Siberia.
Here's another episode of "Nitrateglow is super curious about so-called Hollywood failures and has to investigate every one."
Most classic movie fans have probably heard of Anna Sten, but if you haven't, she was a Ukranian actress who made some Soviet and German movies in the 20s and 30s. She caught the attention of producer Samuel Goldwyn, who saw in her a potential successor to Hungarian silent film actress and talkie casualty Vilma Banky. He also saw Sten as a potential competitor for the likes of Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich.
Sten was hyped to the skies, but her Hollywood vehicles didn't click with the American public. Goldwyn released her from her contract after three films and she's become a footnote in movie history ever since.
But does she deserve to be? Opinion on Sten's acting ability seems to be divided among movie geeks. The writer of She Blogged By Night finds her performance in We Live Again, a Hollywoodized adaptation of a late Tolstoy novel, cringeworthy:
"Still, it’s difficult to feel sorry for Sten, because her inability to relate in an accessible way to the camera is astonishing. It’s as though she had no idea how the camera perceived her, and often moved in such a way that she looked silly, like a hilariously untalented little kid pretending to be an actor. Her line readings were consistently line-by-line, in that each line she uttered has a certain inflection and was matched with certain actions, but these actions were outsized and obvious, and there was no cohesion to her entire performance."
However, reviewing Sten's silent Soviet comedy The Girl with the Hatbox, Fritzi Kramer of Movies Silently feels Sten was a talented performer whose chances at success were unwittingly sabotaged by Goldwyn himself-- he forcefed her image to the public and made them tired of her quickly.
Tumblr media
Having only seen We Live Again, I cannot make any definitive judgment of Sten as an actress. She is undeniably beautiful and charming, though I found her stiff and unconvincing in the big emotional scenes. I was far more impressed with her in the quiet moments, like when she is burying her infant son and finds herself unable to fill the grave with dirt. It's not a bad performance by any means though and I'd be interested in seeing more of her films.
The movie as a whole is fascinating. It's explicitly socialist and it carries over a lot of Tolstoy's subversive religious philosophy, which one would think would have been purged from the script before cameras rolled. I have the strong feeling the story works better as a novel than as a glossy Hollywood movie-- it's very interior. But director Rouben Mamoulian puts it over well and I left the movie feeling satisfied.

recently i found out that before the 1939 wuthering heights movie was made, there was a project to make another movie with the same script with charles boyer as heathcliff and sylvia sidney as cathy. thoughts?
I don’t know who those people are so I can’t say much. Charles Boyer seems a bit more fitting for the role than Olivier, maybe?

Tagged by @maudeboggins to list 5 topics I can talk on for an hour without preparing any material. I agree this is hard! Like Vincent Price says in Laura "I don't know a lot about anything, but I know a little about practically everything"
Figure Skating. - I never even realize how much I can go on about it until someone makes the mistake of asking me my opinion on something about it like my friend did last night and suddenly my life long obsession for it takes over my mind and I talk more than I knew I could.
Cats/pets. - I don't know if this counts because it's more that I like to converse and exchange cat/pet talk with other people but I could go on and on about all the cats I've had and known and converse with others about their various pets too.
Medical/Health stuff - my life time of experience and observance has led me to know a lot about a lot of different things that apparently is not normal for the average person to know? I can talk a lot about it with the right people but I don't know if this really counts since I wont talk in depth about this topic with most people, I have to be exceptionally close to someone and then it's more tmi than they ever cared for.
Old Hollywood Actresses/movies - but mostly just the movies they are in and why I like them and their movies.
Geography/maps/weather - I blame my dad it's the one thing we always connected on and I'm so interested in where everything in the world is and what the weather is like in each place.
I haven't been very active online so I'm not sure who may have done this already but I'll tag a few people and you can skip/ignore it if you want to! @nitrateglow @grusinskayas @valancystirling48 @murderballadeer @oftwodarkmoons @toyourlovemp3 @jwclapton @joanleslies

Hi @nitrateglow! Thank you for asking!
2. is your room messy or clean?
Ehh sort of in between. I’m usually quite a neat freak but I just haven’t had the time or motivation to clean lately.
30. whats your favorite candle scent?
I don’t use candles, as much as I’d love to. My parents don’t let me :/ The fact that my dad is a firefighter is probably a big part of that, I guess
34. favorite actress?
Hmm maybe Mabel Normand?
46. whats your go to hair style?
A bun. I wear some variation of a bun basically every day
55. what is your dream job?
A historian and historical re-enactor!
62. do you still watch cartoons?
Yes! I grew up on a lot of old cartoons and it’s fun to rewatch them. I love Looney Toons, the original Scooby Doo cartoons (from 1969 and 1970), and Tintin.
98. favorite month?
Either October, November, or December!
Thanks again!
