" Mors et salvatio "
Watercolour and chalk pastels on paper
Whenever I think about Vanitas and Noe,I keep on and on coming back to the meaning of salvation. The concept that one person's salvation may not be the same for another, and that it may be near impossible to comprehend at times. I fear that death will be Vanitas' salvation, similar to what Louis had wanted and been denied. At the same time the disappearance of someone so deeply intertwined with his life, even if it counts as that person's salvation, may just end up a curse on Noé, the one left behind. Can both attain salvation at the same time? I feel like the answer is no, and if one does, the other is forever robbed of it...It's an endless thought I keep pondering, the central theme of VnC: "What is Salvation?"
I initially envisoned them in a stained glass window chapel, but thinking about the lighting gave me a headache,so this is what you get.

So this only happened in the anime version of this scene, but when Ruthven curses Noé, these magenta butterflies appear around them.
Tumblr media
Like I said, that pet didn’t happen in the manga, BUT we have seen those magenta butterflies before.
Specifically in this picture of Noé surrounded by, almost falling through, these butterflies.
Tumblr media
Though there is another butterfly in this picture as well. Specifically, a blue glowing butterfly hovering right in front of Noé’s face.
Now I wonder what that could possibly signify?
(Or more like who it represents.)
If the anime was taking cues from this image, then this probably hints at how the curse on Noé will be broken. We’ve seen multiple times that Vanitas is a light that saves Noé from the darkness, and this will probably be the same when it comes time to break the curse and save him from Ruthven’s control, like a reverse of the amusement park.
(And when you consider the traditional way to break curses and the fact that the butterfly is right over Noé’s lips? Well, a girl can hope.)

I like to think Vanitas is gonna be clingy af with Noé in this upcoming arc, we’ve just been confirmed that; yeah, this mf is attached to him, the way he behaves towards him has changed, you can see it, he’ll be worse than Gévaudan

Vanitas no Carte manga volume 3 chapter 11 & anime episode 6
English translation error in the manga ~feat. my thought~
It’s “I could not grab your hand”, NOT “I did not grab your hand”.
Tumblr media
Noe did NOT intentionally decide to not grab Vani’s hand or such; he wanted to (as always) but was unable to catch his hand somehow. That’s why Future!Noe is (still) regretting it (and blaming himself).

Ok, so Noé and Vanitas exist in two different types of Vampire Novels. Explained below the cut, because it's long.
Starting with Vanitas: This man is in a tragic romance novel. He is the hero of the day, he is a charming and handsome doctor, he is the savior of all the beautiful people. He choose a strong handsome man to always be ready to rescue him and for him to always be ready to rescue. The entire time we see him he never asks anyone else to join him in his quest--just Noé, at the beginning of the story, immediately upon meeting him. And Noé lives up to his role. He is reluctant but starry eyed, strong and handsome and pure, 110% behind Vanitas's cause. We can see this intent in the way Vanitas, multiple times, flings himself into Noé's way. He makes sure Noé is watching when he kisses someone else (just to tease her, he says, fully aware that Jeanne as she is will never actually return those feelings.) He is listening at the door when his chosen lead has a "dalliance" with someone else. He immediately retaliates against this by allowing Jeanne to drink his blood, both discovering what exact experience Noé was having with Domi and furthering Noé's interest in him (I don't kiss and tell, with a hand over the wound.)
He has only a few purposes to his life at this point: Be a hero (save the vampires), fall in love and be loved (as stated by Luna and his own desire for salvation. What is salvation for a man who is unlovable? Those two scenes are placed where they are for a reason.), die. That's why he is acting all the time, that's why he says he'll do as he pleases, that's why when he saves someone it is theatrical and handsome and romantic. He's living out a romance novel in the time he has left and I truly think Noé is his leading man. He has allowed himself to be the leading man for someone else in Jeanne. He's willing to (and I suspect may actually be faced with the task) kill Jeanne, but he cannot and will not kill Noé. In fact, he plans on Noé being in his final act--the tragic part of his tragic romance. To die by the hands of the one he loves, to die knowing he is loved by the person who kills him. That he died himself, and with mercy. But this leads into Noé, who is NOT living in a tragic romance. Noé is living in a horror novel. He is afraid, and the people he cares about are hurting, and it has been placed on HIS shoulders to save as many people from the Horrible Terrifying Creature who Twists People before they can be twisted too far. We can see this in the fact that Teacher gives him instructions--these are not whimsical well wishes. There is not the kindness or love in Luna telling Vanitas he will find someone to love him, if he only opens himself to it. This is Teacher telling Noé on no uncertain terms: Do not give up your name--it is everything you are. Find the book of Vanitas and study those who interact with it, become enmeshed in their lives. Decide how this book is being used and what it means. For Noé, people he loves are already gone due to the monster that is Charlatan. And he tries to destroy it every time he sees her. And he even almost falls to it! (But Vanitas, in his romantic gestures, saves Noé before he can be taken, until he doesn't, because Ruthven obviously has a large hand in this corruption.) Noé is a consistent victim of this monster--first Louis, but also it is Amelia who we first see bite him without his permission, draining him of power that he NEEDS to save her, because his instinct (despite knowing, he has to know, he's seen it before) is to save her anyway. And he's got psychological trauma. He's got ptsd that results in bursts of anger and fear and causes him to act without thinking. His only weapon against this monster that could destroy him and his entire world is a man who doesn't seem to understand the extent to which Noé NEEDS him to succeed as often as possible. And so he's stuck trying to figure out his ONLY defense against this monster that twists people into shells. And then he finds out his teacher is also a monster. A different kind, but a monster nonetheless. And you have to wonder, seeing Misha, does he not wonder about his own upbringing? About the things his teacher has told him? Noé constantly has the rug pulled out from under him, is constantly getting blood taken from him without his permission, constantly having to drink blood because of his abilities without his permission, constantly being taken hostage. He's the protagonist of a horror novel who knows nothing about the monster except that it's terrifying and a threat to everything he cares about and he's been told by another monster that he's the special guy who has to figure out how to save everyone. And again, he's faced with someone he loves, someone he clearly is IN LOVE WITH, telling him that it's him who must kill them. Before they become a monster. Before they become someone other than themselves. His literal worst nightmare, coming around to repeat itself again. See, different genres. And it works best like this. If Noé was the one living in a romance novel, Vanitas wouldn't have lasted two seconds before he was swept off his feet. If Vanitas was living in a horror novel. Well. He already did. He'd collapse under the weight of another one.

Okay here is just a bit of a rant about, in my opinion, on of the worst sides of the vanitas no carte fandom. And it’s how some seem to think that Noé is a sweet little innocent baby who totally has no idea what sex is and is totally clueless.
I get this happens in a lot of fandoms (like mha and dsmp I’ve seen it a lot) but in this case it comes from one line of Noé asking Vanitas what love is (panel below). This is from his simple curiosity. What he imagines love is, probably isn’t what Vanitas calls love and it’s his curiosity of wanting to know.
Tumblr media
Vanitas called Noé naïve a number of times but the word ‘innocent’ is never used because he’s not. He is an incredibly written character that is endlessly fun to explore and pick apart -this is the same in most of Jun Mochizuki’s writing and story telling.
Noé is an naturally inquisitive and curious character, but due to his upbringing with his grandparents and the shapeless one, he was never properly taught. We know the shapeless one taught him and Louis but we don’t know what to extent and love is certainly not something that would have coming up with the personality we have seen with the shapeless on at some point. However sex was definitely something that did. And the shapeless one didn’t teach the boys about it themselves, Louis and Noé certainly taught themselves (minds out the gutter, I’m talking about that giant library that the shapeless one has(louis was talking about finding curse bearer papers and research so we know the boys explored it)).
I think the reason Noé asked Vanitas the question was seeing vanitas’ ‘love’ towards jeanne and wanting to know how he knows. Personally I think the closest thing Noé felt to love (before vanitas) was with Dominique and Louis. However with that I believe that he didn’t equate those feeling to the love he had read about. They where more like sibling love.
And I am fully aware about the scene in chapter 12. Here are the panels I am going to talk about (spoilers???):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m fairly sure (I have looked at the characters in vnc a lot; I adore the series and find the characters very intriguing) that Noé is just reading the room. I would bet money that this would be a normal occurrence when him, Louis and Domi lived at the caste in the woods. It was more of play and since Noé had consumed their blood and had no risk of looking into memories he had no wish to, that they would do it regularly. Noé explicitly says as a child that he likes the taste of blood so it would be no wonder that drinking blood would be a regular occurrence
Additionally, there is this panal that directly follows the ones above:
Tumblr media
I believe that Domi calling Noè an ‘utter fool’ refers to Noé not understanding her feelings. Its kinda obvious that Domi has had a crush on him for quite a while (or that’s my opinion) and after all this time and flirting, Noé still doesn’t understand. We even see that noé doesn’t even understand why she calls him this. I would call this naïve not innocent.
Also that whole scene on the roof after the ball (earlier that morning may i point out) I think that that was Noé trying to flirt. This could also just be seen as Noé talking to someone he likes. If Louis was still alive he may have acted this way around him but i don’t know. It would really be taken as anything.
But back to the original point, calling Noé innocent would be a disservice to his charcter and Jun mochizuki’s amazing writing. They clearly know what they are doing in portraying this curious ‘child’ learning about the world he inhabits and his journey to the end.

You know. Fuck this "I'll kill the person I love to save the world"/it's my duty. Fuck the world. Fuck Oswald Baskerville. Fuck duty. Fuck hundreds of other works with this cliché: Noe will ONLY do this for Vani, only FOR the love of him.

NoéVani in Hogwarts
Title speaks for itself.
Their relationship dynamic is comparable to Mr. and Mrs. Weasley's.
Noé is definitely the Hufflepuff that befriends and eventually romances the Viper Among the Slytherins that is Vanitas.
The nickname comes largely from his disregard toward Slytherin House's rep, consorting with anyone and everyone while breaking Hogwarts' rules as he sees fit. He's the sole cause for them having never won the House Cup from his enrollment to his graduation.
Noé as a Quidditch player would definitely wave at Vani after a victory, unaware of a stray bludger comin' right for him until his bf destroys it when it's, like, an inch from his face.
N, beaming: Thank you, mon cœur~ / V: Pay attention, nitwit! 💢💢
The rest of the Slytherin spectator box grumble and mumble amongst themselves, still resentful but used to them by this point.
Vanitas probably has a short career at St. Mungo's before becoming Head Nurse of Hogwarts' Hospital Wing to be closer to Noé, the Muggle Studies professor.
NoéVani are both animagi: a Turkish Angora cat and Thestral respectively.
Listen, the HP wiki said 'tis possible for an animagus to become a magical creature. (Ofc, it's more accurate to say it's been debated in the wizarding world, but we're not gonna talk about that.) Vani here is just a confirmation of that.
Noé is definitely registered at the Ministry, but his partner...will neither confirm nor deny his status. It's likely he became one at, in the eyes of the Ministry, an illegal age; thus, if he did register himself, it was long after the fact.
Vanitas thinks his Thestral form is a sick joke from the universe. Their association with death is like a confirmation that he's responsible for the tragedies in his life.
If you think cat!Noé wouldn't be every Hufflepuff's emotional support animal, you would be wrong.
Yes, Noé has an enchanted flying vehicle that his partner calls a deathtrap.
Vanitas would rather use any other means of transportation and even offer himself as a mount.
N: But your rump is too boney! I get sore after just an hour! / V: Weren't sayin' that last night about my rump. 😏 / N: 😳
"Vanitas" is actually a middle name, taken from Vani's ill-reputed mentor, the Magus of the Blue Moon. His true name is Céleste (SEH-lest), and he was adopted into that same mentor's House of De la Lune.
Unoriginal family name but apt.
The De la Lune House, particularly the Magus of the Blue Moon, was made infamous for a spell they created that could strip a witch or wizard of their magical abilities.
Mikhail is also a De la Lune, but more on him some other time.
"Ciel" is out of the question. I associate it too heavily with Black Butler.
Noé is one of two people alive who knows his partner's given name, and he guards that privilege like it's his greatest treasure.
The Archiviste House is famous for producing powerful Legilimens, and Noé is no exception. Unfortunately, he's supposedly the last Archiviste alive, the sole survivor of some horrific incident.
There is one year when a teacher is struck down by an illness and won't be back to school until the next year; so, Vani is asked to substitute on their behalf. He gets a nice pay raise for the inconvenience.
Depending on who he's substituting for, he could find himself becoming the temporary head of a house.
If he's the Interim Head of Gryffindor, there is chaos.
He wouldn't accept the professor title; his usual "Nurse De la Lune" is perfectly fine.

Okay, since they have the same stances in the art that dropped today as was in the modern clothes pictures that we got the other day, I wonder if this is a reincarnation type scenario where they finally meet again and briefly see each other as they once were.
Noé’s shocked and overwhelmed, not sure what to do.
Vanitas smiles. “Long time no see, Noé.”
Cue tears, hugs, and maybe even some kisses.
