i got tagged by @yarewagon Thank you so much for the tag, pal!!! :D
All Time Favorite Character: Speedbert Bobwagon, of course~
Favorite Jojo: I don’t have a specific one, but if I have to choose, then I’ll probably go with either Jonathan or Jotaro.
Favorite villain: Main villain? I’m torn between Kars and Kira, but I’ll probably go with Kars because I really like the whole Aztec stuff and I really like the Pillar Men. Kira is an awesome villain, too. he’s a disgusting guy in general, but I really enjoy the whole serial killer plot. I’ve always liked reading and learning about serial killers irl and their motives and reasons behind their horrible acts and so on (psychology was one of my fave subjects in school), so it was really cool to have some of that with the unique jjba touch added to it. As for minor villains? Hol Horse. I love that cockblocking dumbass cowboy.
Favorite stand: Design wise? Star Platinum (SDC’s, mainly, but I also like SP The World). Killer Queen also has a really nice design imo. Ability wise? Hmm... Heaven’s Door, maybe.
Favorite part: Phantom Blood, followed by Battle Tendency. As mentioned above, I really like the whole Aztec thing there is to both parts –which is one of the first things that really got me when i first watched Jojo–, not to mention that I enjoyed the vibe there is to both parts (PB, especially, with all the Victorian escenery and whatnot). And, of course: Speedwagon is there, the man that stole my heart and made me fall into Jojo hell uwu
Favorite thing about jojo: The fact that the bizarre shit just keeps coming. Just when you thought you’ve seen it all, something new comes to prove you wrong. The designs are pretty neat, too, and its also got amazing characters and lots of feels. I also love that jjba breaks a lot of the established rules for a shonen from it’s time (the late 80s), such as giving us big buff men in crop tops, badass cinnamon rolls with hearts of gold and hot abs of steel, a bunch of homosexual subtext and much much more.
Hug: My dear Robert, of course~ but that’s a given so I’m going to add Jonathan as well. Both of them have gone through some serious shit and deserve all the hugs and love. Besides, they both seem like they’d give killer hugs.
Get or give comfort to: Same as above for giving comfort to uu Add SDC Jotaro and Polnareff there too. As for getting comfort from, it’d be Robert~ It will always be him uwu
Move out or Live with: The Ogre Street gang: Speeb, Tattoo and Kenpo :D They seem like a really cool bunch to live with and I really feel we’d get along well.
Marry: Do you really have to ask??? Speedwagon, ofc. I’d marry the shit out of him in a heartbeat
Character you relate to the most: Probably Kakyouin, feeling like he didn’t fit with the rest of his peers, never being able to make real friends and just..not belonging?? All that shit is something I’ve always dealt with (still do), especially irl.
Did jojo make a better change in your life? How did it help? Was it a big change or a minor change? Oh definitely. I started watching it during a really rough time of my life. It was thanks to jjba (Speedbabe, mainly, since he’s the one that really made me want to continue watching back then xd) that I could finally take my mind away from all that stuff bothering me despite The Sad™ plaguing the series. It’s been helping lots as well in different ways ever since. It’s also helped me a lot to improve my art as well as my writing and roleplay skills, not to mention that it’s also helped me learn and understand stuff I had limited knowledge on before, as well as improving further both my English and Japanese skills as well.
Self Ship or OC ship with canon characters?: I’m not really into self shipping cause the conventional way most people do it tends to be/feel quite... selfish?? There’s also the fact that I honestly hate myself with a passion, so I don’t think I could ever write or draw myself seriously, but I do like the idea of spending time with my babe, Speebs~ Which is something i’ve been “able to do” for the longest time now since he became my muse almost as soon as i got into jojo and has been so ever since xd (those of you who know me from my rp blogs know the way my muses work and what I’m talking about here), or the fact that I sometimes dream about him and so on. As for OCxCanon shipping, I don’t actively do that, cause I suck at creating stuff from scratch, but I’m not opposed to it as long as the OC is believable and doesn’t fall into the Mary Sue/Gary Stu type, whether it is in fanfics or rps or whatever. I mean, my first rp muse on this site was a canon character and one of his main ships was with a friend’s OC. I rp/write for canon characters, but I don’t rule out shipping with OCs as long as their author/mun is respectful and there’s actual chemistry between the characters, really.
If you had a stand which one would you like to have, which one would you most likely get with you past and demeanor? I’d like to have Heaven’s Door, or maybe Crazy Diamond, or Harvest. The one I’d get, tho? Idk... the most useless one you can think of, probably x’d
Dream activity, with who, where and how long: Spending the rest of my life with my sweet Robert, I don’t care where (knowing him, probably travelling the world together), loving him and making him happy until the very end uwu
tagging.... errrr, y’all know i’m an anxious mess and can’t tag people unless they openly tell me they’d like me to tag them in this kind of stuff so, if you see this and want to give it a shot, consider yourself tagged >:D (and feel free to tag me back or not if you’d like? i won’t judge you either way so go ahead and take it, fam :D)

How to Spend Two Perfect Days in Toronto, Ontario
Tumblr media
Toronto is among my top 5 favored cities worldwide. Yeah, seriously-- I enjoy Toronto! I have checked out Toronto two times, and also on both trips I just spent about two days in the city. 2 days is enough to fall for this Canadian city!
Toronto is not always a breathtaking city in the sense of conventional metropolitan elegance neither is it a city made for visitor attractions. What truly attracts attention about Toronto is that it is a city that has a solid local color as well as an apparent heart-- two top qualities that would certainly endear me to any type of city!
There are a few reasons I enjoy Toronto a lot are:
Variety: I enjoy that you can walk the city as well as see a lot of different types of individuals, restaurants, and also cultures all existing together. Toronto is well known for this variety and it really feels very concrete when you are traveling there.
Thriving Small Business: You can walk along one street, like Queen Road for example, as well as see shop after store after store, all seemingly doing quite well. There is such an imaginative and also unique array of organisations, as well as I like that there is a minimal company visibility in heart of Toronto.
Delicious Food: No surprise as to why I love this, however Toronto has a remarkable cooking scene. Although they aren't Michelin approved, they should be! There are absolutely some James Beard as well as Michelin quality places in the city, as well as fantastic food vehicles and also hole in the wall areas.
After raving concerning Toronto upon my return from my 2nd visit to Canada's largest city, I really felt influenced to create a 2 day overview to exploring all the best that Toronto has to supply. I hope this influences other folks to see Toronto and also spen 2 ideal days discover this incredible city.
Early Morning: St Lawrence Market & Distillery Area
Begin your first day in Toronto with some fantastic food choices in a historic building at St Lawrence Market. A perfect location to choose a small group of individuals with different tastes, this 208 years of age market attributes over 100 different neighborhood food, drink, and also handicraft manufacturers. Lots of them use samples and you can buy baked goods and also snacks to sustain your stroll! Please note that the market is closed on Mondays.
From the marketplace, walk through Parliament Square Park until you hit your following stop-- the Distillery Area. This tiny neighborhood southeast of downtown Toronto is likewise a historical area of the city with roots going back to 1832 when the Gooderham and Worts Distillery was founded right here. At the time, it was just one of the biggest distilleries on the planet, and also spanned throughout the 13 acre location. Today, you can still see the heritage buildings from the Victorian period with contemporary companies as well as restaurants constructed inside the brick city.
In the Distillery Area, you can easily spend a few hrs consuming as well as discovering! A few spots that I recommend looking into inside the area are Deciem, an irregular beauty firm that is all about self-love, City of Angels, an adorable bohemian design females's clothes and also boutique, and also Biltmore, a spacious vintage as well as brand-new furnishings shop with one-of-a-kind products to find.
Afternoon: Walk the Areas
For me, this is the most effective part of Toronto is all the neighborhoods. Like Chicago, it is a city of communities and the "downtown" location is clean and sterile compared to the vibrancy of the individual areas. Maybe I connect with this a lot since it resembles Chicago. The downtown is meh, while the areas really reveal the lifeline of the city.
Over the 5 days that I have spent in Toronto, I invested a bulk of those simply straying around in the neighborhoods of this city. I would generally have a few locations in mind, like a store or restaurant that I wanted to check out, which would lead my general direction but I left myself lots of time to find things along the way.
Use comfy shoes since you'll be doing a great deal of strolling on this part of your 2 days in Toronto. There are a number of awesome roads to enjoy that period numerous neighborhoods, yet I could suggest beginning with King Road West, Queen Street West, Dundas Street West or College Road West. All of these streets provide a flourishing neighborhood boutique and restaurant scenes with stops every few store fronts to explore! If you're trying to find more details recommendations, I did an entire different blog post regarding purchasing in Toronto!
Night: Food Adventures
Toronto is a city with a severe cravings. The food scene right here is prospering as well as if they were Michelin approved, I guarantee there would be several Michelin star eateries. The diversity of food alternatives here is astonishing as well as I pinned far more dining establishments on my customized Google Map than I might ever before have gotten to in 48 hours in Toronto.
Despite which sort of food you remain in the mood for, Toronto has it. Because there are many areas to discover, I advise "bourdaining" which is my term for trying one dish at a great deal different places in honor of Anthony Bourdain's style of eating. By doing this, you can attempt a couple of restaurants around the city without filling up too much. Toronto is a large city, yet I located that it isn't huge on appointments. There are locations that take reservations in advance, yet I discovered most of the time I simply walked in as well as place my name on a list. As such, it is probably clever to eat in a smaller sized group of 4 or much less individuals.
Early Morning: Graffiti Street and also Downtown
Never ever one to refuse a great road art scene, I would advise beginning your 2nd day in Toronto discovering the famed Graffiti Street in the facility of the city. Specifically as it appears, this alley that runs behind Queen Street West has lots of graffiti and also road art. It uses a vivid explosion of creative thinking from neighborhood and global road musicians. It changes every few months, so what you see on one browse through might be completely various the following time!
From graffiti alley, you can continue walking eastern to midtown Toronto. If you get parched on the stroll, stop in at Dineen Coffee Co or get hold of a bite to eat at the historical Queen Mother Cafe. In main Toronto, you can locate the 'grammable Toronto sign, municipal government, Cloud Gardens, and also Yonge-Dundas Square. If you have any hockey fans in your traveling group, the Hockey Hall of Fame is likewise located in midtown Toronto.
Mid-day: Kensington Market
Simply north of Chinatown in main Toronto is Kensington Market. This walkable bohemian community feels like a hipster territory in Toronto that attracts young artists and travelers to its indie stores, classic boutiques, and arts areas. Similar to the Distillery Area, this historical little location has gorgeous (and vibrant!) Victorian houses that make it a fantastic area to invest a couple of hours simply straying around.
My preferred part of this neighborhood was all the vintage shops! Cinderella Vintage, Nerve My Love and also SubRosa were all terrific places to dig for old treasures. There are plenty of other amazing shops to explore in this field as well, like Cocktail Shop where you can discover all kind of awesome glass wares, devices and also books for your next at-home cocktail party!
There are GREAT DEALS OF food stalls, international dining establishments and coffee shops to drop in as you walk. There are additionally some great eating places and wine bars if you're really feeling elegant! A couple of places of note are Blackbird Bakeshop wherefore might be Toronto's ideal bread, Otto's Doner for 'grammable German street food, Wanda's Castle in the air for a wonderful or tasty bite of pie and Grey Gardens for a stylish glass of white wine.
Evening: Sundown Sights & Mixed Drink Adventures
Prior to leaving Kensington Market, grab some products to make yourself a little sundown picnic. As a waterfront city, Toronto has some gorgeous sky line viewing places and no time is better to appreciate Toronto's cityscape than sunset. For the very best views of the sky line, head to either Trillium Park or Jennifer Kateryna Koval's'kyj Park on the east or west sides of the city. Or if you're more of a rooftop individual, have a look at the elegant Roof Bar at the Broadview Resort, SOCO's Roof or the trendy Ritz Bar for incredible skyline views with delicious alcoholic drinks.
After the sunlight decreases, it is time to delight in another incredible part of Toronto's cooking scene-- alcoholic drinks! Like many various other cities around North America, Toronto is experiencing a resurgence of regional distillers and mixologists collaborating to revitalize the art of cocktail production. Civil Liberties, a bespoke cocktail bar is a great location to start. The bartenders will ask you concerning your alcohol choices as well as taste profile, and after that make a customized drink to suit your taste!
The relaxing and vivid Rhum Edge is an additional excellent spot, where you can try slushies or icy exotic drinks. For something a little unique, head to the Lockhart, a Harry Potter themed bar that is cranking out some seriously excellent cocktails all influenced by characters or events from the books.
48 hours in Toronto is a terrific method to start discovering this city, however there are still a lot of neighborhoods I have not been to and so several restaurants I have not eaten at. With so much to supply and discover, I understand that I will be returning to Toronto again in the future.

The Crazies (2010)
Scary Movie Fest Day 4
Film: The Crazies (2010)
Directed by: Breck Eisner
Run Time: 100min
Available on: Starz (expires Oct 21st)
All in all, there’s not too much to say about this film. It’s conventionally shot and written. There are no performances that stand out above the rest. There’s nothing inherently unique about this film. That’s not to say I didn’t like it -- I did. It has an intriguing plot. It’s fast-paced. Some of the acting is stiff at times, but over all it isn’t bad.
But the whole thing is rather conventional today. I’ve not seen the original from the 70′s, so I can’t compare, but the idea behind this film isn’t particularly unique. My belief is that it stemmed from the conspiracy theory about water fluoridation and the known effects of nuclear radiation. Combine the two together, and you’ve got terrifying, partially cognizant zombie-like people who terrorize the town. In 1973, when the original was released, this was a relatively newer topic. Zombies have been around for a long time, but they weren’t popularized until Night of the Living Dead in 1968. And their popularity is still going strong, hence the popularity of The Walking Dead (2010). But this film doesn’t have anything new to offer about zombies or zombie-like creatures. Sure the crazies don’t bite or want to feast on brains, but they’re essentially the same thing. At least with other newer zombie movies or series, they offer something new: The Walking Dead offers a social aspect -- how does society move on after the zombie apocalypse? 28 Days Later (2002)? Well they can run now and are athletically superior than the uninfected. These offer something new. The biggest thing that The Crazies offers is partial cognizance.
Which in it’s own way is interesting. It acts as a reminder that these infected are still people. They have families, they have thoughts, experiences, emotions. But the film doesn’t play too much into this. As I mentioned before, this film is fast-paced. Which is generally a good thing; you don’t get bored as easily watching a fast-paced film. But, this film doesn’t take the time to properly explore certain areas that could make it unique and new. It could offer a new perspective, but instead, brushes right past it. Zombies are a commentary on consumerism, and this remake is, well, consumerist. It’s designed to entertain (i.e: make money), not make a statement. Which is what the majority of the film industry is about, sure.
But horror itself didn’t start out that way. Going back to horror literature, which began in the Gothic movement, between the Romantic and Victorian Eras, horror has always been a commentary; a reaction. The Industrial Revolution was taking over; colonies were fighting for independence and freedom. Suddenly ghosts and demons appear in literature representing regret -- your imperialism is coming back to haunt you. Even when the advent of film and cinema came along, the popular sub-genres reflected societal fears and concerns. I argue that film noir is a precursor to the modern horror film; and, film noir reflects a fear of espionage. Creature features? The effects of nuclear radiation. Slasher films? Feminism and the Civil Rights Movement of the 60′s and 70′s. Found footage films? The government spying on us. Torture porn? Well, those didn’t start until we found out about the torture of POW's. Horror is a reaction to what society fears the most at any given time. If horror films and literature don’t play off the fears of their audience, then what’s their point?
This film could have said something about society. It could have drawn more attention to the fact these were still people. It could have been unique. But the conventionality of it makes the film brush right past the details, and turns itself into mindless entertainment. Which has its place in society.
So, if you’re looking for a conventional film that has a few good jump scares and an intriguing plot, The Crazies is the film for you.

Top 30 to Look Forward to at GenCon 2019 (#1-10)
This year’s GenCon was from Aug. 1-4, 2019. Here’s a look at the top 30 games I would’ve wanted to hunt down if I had been able to attend the convention. One game did come off my initial list because I got the chance to play it at my FLGS, and I didn’t enjoy it (Era: Medieval Age, sorry Matt Leacock, I’m still a fan; I just didn’t like this one).
This list was compiled using BGG’s GenCon Preview list provided by the wonderful W. Eric Martin. I sorted the games alphabetically by publisher, so the games are listed by publisher instead of the ones I’m looking forward to playing the most. Without further ado, here’s the list of my top 30!
Jurassic Parts - Published by 25th Century Games and designed by Kevin Lanzing, this appears to be a quick playing filler for 2-4 players. Kevin Lanzing previously designed Flash Point: Fire Rescue, which reminded me of a firefighting version of Pandemic (the core gameplay was clearly inspired by the cooperative game, Pandemic). In Jurassic Parts, players are archaeologists trying to place their chisels around hex tiles to chip off slabs of rock and collect fossils. The game plays in 15-30 min., which is why I wonder if it’s supposed to be a lightweight filler game. I like the theme--dinosaurs, which seems to be a hot theme since 2018-2019.
Truck Off: The Food Truck Frenzy Roll & Write - Published by Adam’s Apple Games and designed by Adam Rehberg, this game is for 1+ players and takes about 30 minutes. It’s a roll & write about food--enough said! I’m interested in both the gaming mechanism and the theme.
Atelier: The Painter's Studio -  Published by AEG and designed by Nicholas Bongiu, this game is for 2-4 players and plays in 30-45 min. As far as I can tell using BGG, this appears to be the designer’s first published game. I like the art theme, and I like that the player’s board is shaped like a palette. I wonder how this game compares to Fresco, which is probably the most well-liked board game about art on the market currently.
Ecos: First Continent - Published by AEG and designed by John D. Clair, this is for 2-6 players in 45-75 min. In this game, “Players are forces of nature molding the planet, but with competing visions of its grandeur.“ I’m instantly intrigued by this world building game that has players competing to create their own vision of Earth!
Walking in Burano - This is the last title by AEG, designed by Wei Min-Ling. This is a quick playing game for 1-4 players in 20-40 min. This designer previously produced familiar titles, Hanamikoji (2016) and Burano (2015). Burano is a beautiful game in which you and competing players build up the island of Burano, giving the finished game board an eye-popping 3-D look. Walking in Burano appears to be a faster playing (Burano plays in 1.5-2 hrs) card based game. I think I’m drawn in by the colorful houses of Burano. It’s so picturesque--definitely a place I’d like to visit someday, if I can ever make it to Venice, Italy.
Tiny Towns - Published by AEG and designed by new designer, Peter McPherson, this game admittedly hit my list thanks to my friendly local game store (FLGS). I got to play it during my gaming store’s GenCan’t event, for all those who can’t make it to GenCon. The game is thinky and more challenging than what’s on the surface. I realized halfway through that I had placed a few early pieces poorly and wouldn’t be able to fill all spots on my board with buildings. I’m looking forward to the next time I get to play this game in hopes to redeem myself!
Welcome to Dino World - Published by Alley Cat Games and designed by a trio: James O'Connor, Nick Shaw, and Dávid Turczi. This looks like a roll & write game about building a dinosaur park (remember that theme from last year?). It’s for 1+ players in 40-70 min. I don’t understand why it takes so long to play this game, but I’m still interested in the theme!
Arkeis - Published by Ankama and designed by a quartet: Antoine Bauza, Corentin Lebrat, Ludovic Maublanc, and Théo Rivière.  Antoine Bauza is a well established designer in the industry, designing games such as 7 Wonders, Ghost Stories, Takenoko, Hanabi, Conan, Tokaido, Terror in Meeple City, Oceanos, Victorian Masterminds...I could go on and on. He made card drafting fun with 7 Wonders and Oceanos. He’s experimented with different game mechanisms and has experience working with other designers. Ludovic Maublanc is also an impressive designer, having worked on games such as Cyclades, Mr. Jack, Conan, Cash ‘n Guns, Dice Town, and Kingdomino Duel. The other two designers appear to be lesser known, although it’s worth noting that Théo also designed Nagaraja, a quick playing 2-player game that seems to have gotten some buzz this year. Enough about the designers’ pedigrees, let’s talk about the game! Arkeis caught my eye because it appears to be a legacy style, cooperative, Egyptian themed adventure game. From the publisher, Arkeis is “a story-driven, cooperative miniatures game in which players explore ancient Egyptian ruins... Each scenario comes with objectives the players may accomplish during the game. Completing these will reward them with new key items or upgrades that will influence later scenarios.” If all of that doesn’t make you intrigued, I don’t know what will.
Draftosaurus - Published by Ankama and designed by the same group above: Antoine Bauza, Corentin Lebrat, Ludovic Maublanc, and Théo Rivière. This little game is for 2-5 players and plays in 15 min. I think it’s a dino-themed “Sushi Go” type of drafting game that includes dino meeples! You draft uniquely shaped dinosaurs! What’s not to love? Did I mention that dinosaurs seems to be a hot theme this year?
The Stygian Society - Published by APE Games and designed by Kevin Wilson, this co-op is for 1-4 players and takes 1-2 hours. From the publisher, “Players drop cubes into the tower based on which skills they select but also cubes for the enemies. Both players and the enemies act based on what drops out the bottom.” I love co-op games, and the cube tower sounds interesting. I haven’t played many cube tower games (I’ve never played Amerigo), but I have experience with Mord Im A Rosa.
Ok, now that I’ve written up the first ten, I think I’ll break up this post in chunks of ten to make the list more manageable. Stay tuned for 11-20 in the next post!

After a 5K race, Salt Lake City officials will hold a dedication at the Fisher Mansion — just steps from the bridge — to explain how the new section completes the 45-mile Jordan River Trail, which traverses three counties and took decades to complete.
Those who walk, run or bike the Jordan River Trail now will be able to get on and off the path at 200 South, right in the front of the Fisher Mansion, explained Dan Rip, the real property manager for Salt Lake City, which purchased the Fisher property in 2007. “Once the trail opens, we expect there will be a lot of attention to the home.”
At the time it was purchased, Salt Lake City planned to use only a small strip of the property for the trail and then sell the rest of the property, including the home and carriage house. However, when then-Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker was elected, one of his first priorities was to keep the historically significant structure and convert it into public use.
(Steve Griffin | The Salt Lake Tribune) Tom Riemondy, Albert Fisher’s great-great-grandson, walks inside the Fisher Mansion in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017.
Today, the city envisions turning the main floor of the Fisher Mansion into public event space and using the upstairs for nonprofit offices, similar to what is done at Memorial House in Memory Grove, he said. The carriage house could be transformed into an ice cream shop or offer boat rentals.
First there would need to be a major renovation that includes seismic upgrades, improvements to electrical and plumping systems and restoration of walls, floors, doors, windows and the grand staircase in the center of the home. The total cost is estimated at more than $3 million.
Built in 1893, the two-story, 12-room Fisher Mansion is an example of the Victorian Eclectic style and one of the relatively few residential designs by Richard Kletting, who also designed the Utah State Capitol and the original south-shore Saltair, according to historical information from Preservation Utah, formerly the Utah Heritage Foundation.
The mansion has unique architectural details, including a boxlike shape, leaded and curved front windows and a Queen Anne-inspired wrap-around porch. Inside, many of the historical details remain, including wood flooring, paneling and trim, the original fireplace, light switches and period chandeliers.

According to Preservation Utah, Fisher used the two-story brick carriage house behind the mansion as his office; windows allowed him to look at the Jordan River to the west and the Wasatch Mountains to the east.
While many breweries died with Prohibition, Fisher Brewing Co. was able to survive the temperance movement and even flourish afterward. At its peak it was producing 75,000 barrels of beer annually. After a series of acquisitions by larger breweries, it closed in 1960.
Members of the Fisher family lived in the home until 1940, officials say. Then, from 1944 to 1973, it was leased to the Roman Catholic Church as a convent. Later, the church turned the building into a shelter for homeless men, and it remained a boarding house until Salt Lake City purchased it.
Alice “Daisy” Graham, the great-great-granddaughter of Albert and Alma Fisher, remembers going to the house as a young girl. “I remember the furniture was prickly when you sat on it, but very fancy. And the rooms were very large,” she said. “My dad would tell us stories about growing up there. He would show me the tree where he broke his arm and where they had cows.”
Graham is especially partial to the carriage house. “There are a lot of beautiful old mansions in our city, but I don’t know of anything like that carriage house. It’s very distinctive.”
(Steve Griffin | The Salt Lake Tribune) Views to the northwest to the Fisher Mansion carriage house in Salt Lake City.
The Fisher descendants would like to see the property restored and become a gathering place for the neighborhood, said Graham. “There is something about the home and the history,” she said, adding that the house was “quite flamboyant” for the time and that Albert “was particularly flashy and wanted to show his status.”
The rich Fisher Brewing past was revived earlier this year when Graham’s nephew Tom Fisher Riemondy (the great-great grandson of Albert Fisher), along with three partners, resurrected the A. Fisher Brewing Co.
(Steve Griffin | Tribune file photo) Steven Brown holds a fresh can of bear at the new A. Fisher Brewing Company in Salt Lake City.
But with its name and historical connection, Riemondy said the modern-day Fisher Brewery plans to bring attention to the mansion. Last month, the brewery sponsored a celebration at the property with food, music and beer that attracted nearly 1,000 people. They are planning similar events in the future.
Salt Lake City will open of a new recreational bridge between North Temple and 200 South, marking the completion of the 45-mile Jordan River Trail.
The completion of the last link of the Jordan River Trail also will help. For those unfamiliar with the paved, nonmotorized path, it starts at the headwaters at Utah Lake in Utah County, winds its way through Salt Lake County and ends at the Legacy Parkway Trail in Davis County near the Great Salt Lake.
(Al Hartmann | Tribune file photo) Bicyclists and walkers cross the Jordan RIver on a bridge at 1800 N. Redwood Road.
The parkway passes through or is adjacent to numerous parks, golf courses, wetlands, urban fishing ponds, cultural centers, demonstration gardens, shopping areas, a freedom shrine, a pioneer cabin and an American Indian ancestral site with dwellings and artifacts that rank among the oldest known in Utah.
The Jordan River Commission, made up of government and private entities, was formed in 2010, to enhance and preserve the river corridor. Among its initial goals was to close all the gaps in the existing trail, said executive director Soren Simonsen.
The Salt Lake City portion that opens Saturday is the final section for good reason: it was the most challenging and expensive to build, he said. It required construction of a bridge that spans three freight rail tracks and curves around two large electrical transmission poles.
With its completion, now the focus can turn to improvements at the Fisher Mansion, said Simonsen, who was a member of the Salt Lake City Council when the mansion was purchased.
“It’s another significant cultural resource on the river corridor,” he said. “It sits at the intersection of history and culture and environment and restoration.”

When does a sustainable home not look like a sustainable home? When it’s a Futurehome. Interview with Gerard Maccreanor of Maccreanor Lavington Architects
Futurehome is on its way to Elephant Park, our award-winning urban regeneration project which will deliver 3,000 new homes by 2025. Along with a brand-new park, 50 new shops, restaurants and cafes it will also deliver net-zero carbon energy to all the new homes.
Futurehome is a collection of 15 three and four-bedroom townhouses in Elephant Park, designed to world-leading Passivhaus standards. These homes go beyond conventional design practices for urban cities and are setting a new standard for sustainable residential architecture.
In the second part of our blog series introducing the Futurehome concept, we spoke to founding partner Gerard Maccreanor about the unique opportunities and challenges associated with designing these ultra-progressive sustainable homes.

Gerard Maccreanor, founding partner, Maccreanor Lavington Architects
What most inspired you about the design brief for Futurehome?
“I was excited about the brief for Futurehome because I had already been experimenting with environmentally-innovative homes and trialling building my own house to Passivhaus standards. I believe that this is the future of housebuilding, so it was a great opportunity to put some of my learnings into practice and at the same time take on the challenge of designing a progressive development in Central London.”

Tell us a bit more about the Passivhaus standard and what it means in practice
“  The Passivhaus standard has been around since the late 1980s, it was a construction methodology that was developed through universities in Germany at that time. Today there are 30,000 Passivhauses built around the world and as its popularity continues to grow, we will see many more built in the UK in the coming years.
Passivhaus buildings are buildings which provide a high level of occupant comfort while using very little energy for heating and cooling.  This is achieved by adopting a highly rigorous and detailed approach when it comes to the fabric of the building, along with the careful design and installation of a ventilation system. In practice, this means  warmer homes, lower bills, improved comfort levels,  improved indoor air quality, and a reduced carbon footprint.

Futurehome’s air management system removes smoke, dust and pollen so you breath fresh, filtered air
What goes into designing a home to Passivhaus standards and what are some of the challenges?
We worked with WARM Consultants a specialist advisor to design the homes. One of the most challenging things to realise in designing a home to Passivhaus standards is air tightness, which along with an air management system, is what helps keep the homes at a comfortable temperature. In older properties, there is a lot of draught, which then requires you to heat your home to high temperatures because you feel cold. In a Passivhaus, there is no air movement so you instantly feel more comfortable in the home at a lower temperature.
“However, this is very complicated to achieve. All the joints and holes within the building must be sealed and the house has to be tested to make sure that there is no air leakage Triple glazed windows maintain warmth and reduce noise, and the air management system filters out any pollen and dust whilst ensuring that the house is kept at a comfortable temperature.”
Tumblr media
Futurehome features window shutters which reduce summer heat levels to ensure a comfortable year-round environment
From an architectural perspective what do you think is most progressive about the Futurehome concept?
“From an architectural perspective, the most progressive thing about the Futurehome concept is that it achieves a superior level of performance with the aid of advanced technologies, whilst still inherently being a traditional house.
“For the Futurehome collection, we wanted to create a new version of a Victorian terraced property with high ceilings, traditional brick facades and large bay windows. These Futurehomes not only reflect the local context, but are properties that will weather well and grow old gracefully thereby retaining their value, We certainly didn’t want to create a project that was ‘bling’ - that showed its eco credentials with windmills and various attachments.
“By designing Futurehome properties to Passivhaus standards we are creating homes that are truly progressive in helping to reduce a homeowner’s carbon footprint and lowering overall energy consumption. This energy consumption can be about 75% less than you would find in normal new build houses and about 90% less than you would find in a traditional home.”
Tumblr media
Futurehome at Elephant Park features well-proportioned private outdoor spaces
What do you think the wider architecture community could learn from the Futurehome concept?
“Sustainable architecture doesn’t have to look like sustainable architecture. A development that fits into its surroundings is very important. With Elephant Park’s South Gardens, when the project is delivered and when the hoardings come down, I think you will see a very consistent street profile that fits into the community.
“It is important to ensure that homes like these become the standard for housebuilding in urban residential settings. The government is concerned with reducing our carbon footprint and Futurehome represents an important step towards that goal. You will see many more houses with a Passivhaus certification in the future and we hope this product will be normal in 10 years’ time.”
