Not-So-Berry Challenge: Mint Generation (1st)

NSB (Straud Legacy) Gen 8 Ep. 182: Welcome to the Ever After

Jack awoke from death to find himself standing outside a version of the stately building that he knew would soon host Peachy’s Black and White Bash in the living world. However, subtle differences in the quality of the realm around him said that this was no dream, and he had passed into the forever save.

He sighed, hoping that his boys did well at the party without him, then straightened up when he heard approaching footsteps.

His friend Storm walked up, much more solid and lively than when he last saw his spirit at the homestead and welcomed him to “The Ever After”.

They settled on a nearby bench to chat and Storm gave his condolences that Jack had to be parted from their clan so early. Even though a “natural” UN-extended lifespan was valued much more highly in Jack’s homeland, Storm knew that had not made the prospect of leaving his family easy for him.

When Storm offered to show him how to visit the mortal realm, Jack said that wasn’t really done where he came from. He also worried that appearing as a ghost would make the grieving process harder for those he had left behind. He did agree to at least come to Peachy’s Black and White Bash in a few days time, as was tradition for their family.

With that the two man rose and headed to the teleporter that would take them to the house where Jack expected to wait for Peachy to join him.

Jack did not find a replica of the old homestead, but rather a pretty peach Victorian on the crumbling Isle in Windenburg.

As they approached the big unfamiliar house, a small gray shape came down the steps to greet them and Jack smiled when he realized that his best girl, Luna, had once again come to help him make the transition from one save to another.

His dearest feline friend couldn’t replace his family, but, he told Storm, he would certainly feel much less lonely with her by his side.

At Jack’s comment, Storm grew thoughtful. His own elderhood had been quite long and he’d arrived in the nether with both his husband and many of their old friends and family there to greet him. Jack, being much older than Peachy and most of his own friends, was in a very different position.

Storm remembered how much better the wait for his university acceptance letter had been after he decided to move in with his friend Xander.

He asked if Jack and Luna might like to come stay with his family for awhile, rather than make the long wait here, in a house clearly designed with Peachy in mind. Jack happily agreed, staying only long enough to invite Storm to help him catch the first fish dinner of the new save.

Yes, I wrote a slightly modified version of the original NSB combined with the NSB extended. I just wanted to explore some specific gameplay so I edited some rules slightly (and majorly changed the later gens) based on that.

I shared all the rules here if you’d like to check it out! I also wrote an extended version but it’s a little more unique with less in common with the original. When I have time to go reread it and check it for errors and stuff I’m going to share that one here too 😊

It’s a new dawn, a new day and the house feels brighter. They spent the morning watching old family videos and talking about Whit and each other. Belladonna finally told her mom that she could do magic. Sable took her outside to learn how to control and manipulate the magic running through her. Belladonna shows so much potential, Sable decides to talk with Simeon about her.

Morgana is content to run off some of her energy on the jungle gym, though she wishes her sister had the time to play with her.

And Hesperia, well, she’s getting ready for prom.

Not So Berry [Expanded] (Legacy Challenge)

This is my spin on the Not So Berry Challenge! Inspired by the original challenge, 100% by @lilsimsie & @alwaysimming

There are five generations in this one because I tend to go for shorter legacy challenges as opposed to the 10-gen ones. I might add more if anyone is interested.

I know other people have made some NSB extended versions so I hope I'm not stepping on anybody's toes! I tried to use different colors but ones like black&white are common so they might be in other people's NSBs.

Generation One: Seafoam (Blue/Green)

You grew up on the open ocean, sailing around with your parents and fishing. You didn’t really….. get out much… Now you’re on your own, doing the thing that you know best and making a living out of it! Your dream is to own your own fishing boat, but until then you’re stuck as a part-time fisherman trying to work your way up

Traits: Child of the Islands, Erratic, Loves the Outdoors

Aspiration: Angling Ace

Career: Fisherman (Part-time)

Reach Level 3 of the Fisherman career and then quit & register as a self-employed fisherman and make money only from your catches

You must live in Sulani your whole life

Master Fishing & reach at least level 5 in a “hobby” that your sim picks up (any other skill you want)

Generation Two: Violet (Purple)

You grew up surrounded by fish and the great outdoors. You want nothing to do with that. You want to live in the big city and spend your days relaxing (and of course posting everything you do on Simstagram!)

Twin #2’s side of the room was always nice and neat. Despite their differences, they’re forced to live together so they can afford to keep the family home (from gen. 3)

Not So Berry Extended (TS3)

To start off, I didn’t make the original challenge. The original NSB challenge was made by @lilsimsie and @alwaysimming. The extended version was made by @neecxle, and I’m going to be using Neecxle’s extended version to ‘convert’ it to TS3. The original NSB challenge has already been ‘converted’ for TS3 by lilsimsie herself, so I thought why not do the extended version for TS3 too! 

Please keep in mind that some rules aren’t going to be exact, and I might reduce the challenge rules when it comes to something like skills depending on what TS3 has to offer. For example, in TS4 the singing skill that came with city living is an actual skill itself, and not a hidden skill like in the TS3. So technically in TS3, you’re not ‘leveling it up’ but instead just getting good at singing. Some skills for TS3 are store bought content like the dancing skill, unlike TS4 when the dancing skill came with Get Together. Another thing to add, some traits for these gens might not have the corresponding colors, unlike previous generations.

Generation 11: White ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Side Note: If you have the Stiff as a Board, Light as a Feather Dance Collection from the store, the dancing skill is not optional ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From a young age you grew a fascination with acting, the idea of being able to step away from reality and take on a role of someone else excited you. So with the supportive parents you had, they enrolled you in drama club for the entirety of your high school life. You begin to strive for something more, becoming a global superstar actor! With focusing so much on your career, keeping serious romantic relationships is difficult because you always prioritize work over love. You eat, breathe, sleep acting and you were happy keeping it that way. But with a one night stand gone wrong… you find out you are now left with an unplanned child.

Generation 12: Brown  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Side Note: If you have the Killer Classics set from the store, the cowplant is not optional ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Growing up in the shadows of your parents spotlight was a little hard on you. Although you knew how much they loved you and tried their best to spend every free moment with you, you still felt…alone. Thankfully being a part of the scouts club gave you a sense of family, which you deeply cherished. Scouts club also made you truly fall in love with the outdoors. Being out in nature didn’t make you feel like you were so alone anymore, which is why camping/traveling became something you loved to do. There were tales that there were hidden temples and tombs all over the world, so naturally the curious bean you were you had to find out for yourself. Forever alone felt like a motto you started to live by and thought you’d never get married like your parent, but someone finally came along and you were really happy with the way life was heading. Unfortunately down the road things didn’t end up working out. You’ve always secretly had this crazy idea of making a robot best friend since you were a kid. The thought of having a robot who was there for you every waking moment felt like something you needed in your life, so it was time to make a crazy idea… a reality!

Generation 13: Black   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Side Note: You must turn into a vampire first before you start working on your LTW  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ahh books… you love em! You always enjoyed a good read that could take you on a journey in a whole new fantasy world. So naturally regular trips to the library was the thing to do. Thanks to the library it brought you your best friend, who you later fall in love with and get engaged to. Instead of going off to university like everyone else you got convinced to join the military, but that didn’t last long so you quit and went off to study communications. Whilst away at uni you met a vampire, and end up  becoming completely mesmerized with them and fall in love so quick as if you were put under a spell. This is where you decide to ask “could I be turned into one?” Without hesitation their teeth sink into your neck and the process of you turning has begun. You decide to drop out of university and call off the engagement because you have fallen for another and want to live out your new vampire life. Becoming a bookstore clerk was your only option after dropping out of uni, and you had more time to yourself so you started writing your own books. Unfortunately your job started to feel mundane, so you have the bright idea of buying the local library! Not being able to have children has always upset you, but with your new powers creating your own vampire family is only one step away…

Traits: Bookworm | Excitable | Supernatural Fan | Night Owl | Absent-Minded  Lifetime Wish: Turn The Town  Career: Military | Education (College) | Bookstore Clerk | Business Owner 

Goals:

Start visiting the library as a child and teen, and meet your best friend there

Get engaged to your best friend as soon as you’re a young adult 

Join military career then quit when you reach level 5

Go to university and study communications, then drop out after the first semester 

Fall in love with a vampire while you’re at university, be turned into a vampire, and call off the engagement

Join the bookstore clerk career and ‘master’ it (level 3)

Buy the local library (I’ll allow cheats if you can’t afford it) then quit your job as a bookstore clerk so you can run your own business

Master piano, and writing skills

Go bowling with your friends every now and then (only at night)

I had been toying with the idea of making a palette for the NSB challenge. There’s so many palette’s out there and they all have pretty colours --but I wanted the challenge colours without the rest of the clutter, so I made my own colours and palette! I’ll slowly be recolouring items in this palette --starting with base game items and so forth. Consider this version one!

I did the traditional NSB colours, as well as the extended version by @gerbithats! I also decided to do a more vibrant colour and then a more muted colour to go along with it.

gaming update

so currently my laptop i use for gaming is still out of commission, and all i have is my laptop for college, but it’s a simple chrome book. i am hoping to get my laptop fixed before spring semester is done or over the summer, but in the meantime i’ve been coming up with so many ideas for story telling and gameplay!

and i’ve decided i really really really wanna start the not so berry challenge over again but with some tweaks so I can include more gameplay. meaning i wanna do the nsb challenge along with the extended version and i may add two additional generations on so I can play Strangerville & Get Famous...so in other words I’m gonna probably post my whole generation list for the challenge but have it be updated so i have a place to reference for the challenge.

Norway in a Nutshell - a remarkable journey

Short version - the journey to Bergen through Flåm included the most beautiful, remarkable scenery I have ever seen. It is worth spending a night in Flåm.

A step by step breakdown of this multipart journey follows.

One of the first things we came across when researching Norway was the Norway in a Nutshell tour. While it is billed as a “tour”, there are no guides - in fact, the entire tour takes place on public transportation. You can book the entire trip yourself without the aid of the booking company, and there are several online tutorials to this end. We pressed the easy button and booked the trip through Norway in a Nutshell. 

The first leg of the journey is an NSB train from Oslo to Myrdal Station. Wonderful scenery starts almost immediately after leaving Oslo. The train passes through Geilo (seen below), a popular skiing destination. It still had plenty of snow and skiers in early May. 

At Myrdal Station, we transferred to the Flåmsbana, a 20km railway that terminates in Flåm. The gradient on this railway is 1:18 (one foot drop for every 18 feet forward). This might not sound like much, but this makes it one of the steeper non-cog railways anywhere. There is a lot to see on the way to Flåm; the train thankfully takes it slow and even stops for 10 minutes at one of the larger waterfalls. I’ve never seen so many waterfalls. Below is the Rjoandefossen, with a 482 ft drop.

After an hour of views like this, we arrived in Flåm, and things only got better. The view from the Flåm harbor out to the Aurlandsfjord is absolutely stunning:

The trip from Oslo to Flåm took a bit over 5 hours. Many people on the train with us continued on to a fjord cruise from here. At least for us, I am certain this would have been folly. We hit the point of sensory overload by the time we reached Flåm. We spent the next day enjoying the cool air, soaking in the sights, and doing a bit of hiking. Even in the early part of the season, hotels are quite expensive. We were fortunate to book a cabin at the Flåm Hostel, which was much more reasonable.

The following day, we took a fjord cruise from Flåm to Gudvangen. This covers two fjords - the Aurlandsfjord and the Nærøyfjord. The topography is absolutely insane - sheer walls extend almost 6000 feet straight up on both sides of the water at times, with innumerate waterfalls lining the mountainsides. Beautiful villages dot the valleys between mountains. 

I thought the tour ended at Gudvangen and that the bus trip from Gudvangen to Voss was simply a necessity to reach the nearest train station. Nope! The bus takes a detour down the Stalheimskleiva (known locally as the “hairpin road”), the steepest road in Northern Europe (1:5 gradient). It was a bit of a white knuckle ride; it seemed impossible that a bus could make the turns. The road offers an outstanding view of the valley that ends at Gudvangen.

The final leg of the trip is an NSB train from Voss to Bergen, arriving right around 9pm, which of course meant we had almost an hour of sunlight to work with :).

Words and pictures don’t do this tour justice. If you’re anywhere close to Norway, find a way to make this happen. Again, both days sightseeing felt quite full. While it is certainly possible to cram all of this activity into a single day, I recommend making it a two-day trip if at all possible.
