The O Antiphons - December 19th - O Radix Jesse
O Root of Jesse, that stands for an ensign of the people, before whom the kings keep silence and unto whom the Gentiles shall make supplication: come, to deliver us, and tarry not.

O Sapientia, quae ex ore Altissimi prodiisti, attingens a fine usque ad finem fortiter, suaviterque disponens omnia: veni ad docendum nos viam prudentiae.
O Wisdom, who proceeds from the mouth of the Most High, reaching out mightily from end to end, and sweetly arranging all things: come to teach us the way of peace.
Isaiah 11:2-3: And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what His eyes see, or decide by what His ears hear;
Isaiah 28:29: This also comes from the Lord of hosts; He is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in wisdom.

"O Key of David" | Emancipation O'Fashioned
Today we reflect on Jesus as "The Key of David". We also make a "narrative cocktail" that tells a story in how we make it.
For each of the ancient “O Antiphon” prayers in this week preceding Christmas, I will be offering prayers and a variation on an Old Fashioned. Today’s O Antiphon: “O Key of David” Calling Jesus the “Key of David” means he perfectly fits the locks our fallen humanity and frees us. He breaks the shackles of sin and death, giving us a liberation that cannot be undone. To honor it, I’ve made a…

Isaiah's Testimony about Jesus
Isaiah’s Testimony about Jesus
I’m preparing for an Advent message series on the O Antiphons, songs sung about the coming of King Jesus at Advent and Christmas. And (of course) I’m digging into commentaries on Isaiah. Of particular fascination for me has been John F.A. Sawyer’s The Fifth Gospel: Isaiah in the History of Christianity. While reading this work today, I came across a brilliant piece of writing by Isidore of…

O Rex Gentium, et desideratus earum, lapisque angularis, qui facis utraque unum: veni, et salva hominem, quem de limo formasti.
O King of the Nations, and the one they desired, keystone, who makes both peoples one, come and save mankind, whom you shaped from the mud.
Isaiah 9:5: For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire.
Isaiah 2:4: He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

O Root of Jesse,
standing as a sign among the peoples;
before you kings will shut their mouths,
to you the nations will make their prayer:
Come and deliver us, and delay no longer.

'When, in the celebration of the liturgy, the priest faces the “liturgical east,” he is “guiding the people in pilgrimage towards the Kingdom” and with them, keeping watch for the return of the Lord. “This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11). Pope Benedict XVI has reminded us that a powerful witness is given in the prayer of a priest and people who stand together facing eastward and giving voice to the same hope. “The Spirit and the Bride say, ‘Come.’ And let him who hears say, ‘Come’” (Revelation 22:17).'

16th December
O Sapienta
Tumblr media
Source: Wikipedia
December 16th is known as O Sapienta, which is one of the Antiphon texts chanted in church in the last weeks of Advent. The religious songs originated in the sixth century in the Ostrogothic/Roman realm in Italy and spread throughout church services in Christendom. In northern Europe today was also the start of Mince Pie Season, a Christmas tradition which continues to the present day, but unlike nowadays, in which mince pies are a delicious sweet and fruit-filled festive treat, the original pies consisted of genuine minced meat. An unpleasant aspect of this season therefore was the fact that the old mince pies, consisting of autumn offal, were genuine minced meat dishes which were seasoned with sugar and spices to disguise the taste of the decaying flesh. Thankfully these days, the pies are entirely vegetarian.

"O Root of Jesse" | Family Tree O'Fashioned
Day 3 of the O Antiphons brings us "O Root of Jesse". What does this odd phrase mean, and how can you make a Vodka Old Fashioned that tastes just like a cherry coke? Read on...
For each of the ancient “O Antiphon” prayers in this week preceding Christmas, I will be offering prayers and a variation on an Old Fashioned. Today’s O Antiphon: “O Root of Jesse” Today’s antiphon title can sound strange to modern ears, but the “Root of Jesse” is building off the imagery of a family tree, specifically the image of the kingly line of David whose father was Jesse. The texts say…
