I know that you’ve talked about what happened when Michael met y/n’s parents for the first time I was curious what happened when y/n met Michael’s parents?

I mean honestly, with them, meeting parents isnt ever going to be a smooth ride lol

so hty!Michael isn’t really close with his family

like at all

so you really were the one that kept pestering him about introducing you to his parents

because while you knew they had problems, you wanted to meet the people that gave birth to the most important person in your life

wanted them to know how special he was, at least to you

and michael was pretty hesitant about it

straight up saying no a lot of the times you brought it up

just because he didn’t think they deserved to meet you

wanted to keep the person he loved the most away from them and whatever they could tell you about him and what he used to be like before you met

but you kept asking

because it was important to you

he had met your parents

and you thought that in order to take that one last step to having a more serious relationship, you had to meet his

so he finally relented

which didnt seem like a big deal

but the fact was that he had to contact his parents for the first time in a long time to set up a time and place

and he wasn’t exactly ecstatic about it

tbh part of him was surprised they even agreed

you on the otherhand were over the moon, wanting to make a good impression so you tittered nervously about it in the weeks leading up to meeting them

you fussed over what to wear, how you should act, imagined what they were like

i mean you didn’t exactly have a great perception of them since michael never talked to them and part of you did wonder just how they treated him to make him be so….emotionally closed off

but still you wanted them to like you because you were in michael’s life and didn’t have any plans on leaving

so it would hurt if they thought that you weren’t a good fit or see you as too different to be someone michael should be with like everyone else thought

michael on the other hand thought that if anything, they should be the ones groveling to make a good impression on you

tbh they should feel honored you wanted to and were giving them the time of day

and he told you as much

but that didnt stop you from wearing your prettiest dress and asking him questions about how you should talk, how you should address them, if you should bring a present or something

he on the other hand didnt dress up special at all and nearly laughed at your nerves

“i barely even call them mom and dad, call them whatever the fuck you want. i won’t be offended."

but he softened his tone when you scowled at him

it was just so wholesome that you thought his family deserved your kindness and your optimism at a nice family reunion which would not happen

he told you that his parents would love you

and he was fairly certain they would

if anything, they’d be wondering how the hell he managed to snatch you

not that he could blame them

and he was right, of course

when you finally met his parents, the grin on your face and little peppy way you stood on your tippy toes when you shook their hands because you were so excited and they were taller than you

made them look so caught off guard michael almost laughed

whatever they had been expecting, it had not been the sweet petite girl in front of them in the baby blue dress

but it wasnt a joke, even as they continued to wonder when they shook your hand hesitantly and looked between each other

because right after you had introduced yourself and told them how amazing it was to meet them and how much you had been wanting to meet mikey’s parents like the polite girl you were raised to be

their son took you in his arms, your back hitting his chest, his tattoos almost seeming like graffitied wall protecting you from them

and you melted into him like you belonged there, in his arms

plus they werent sure when the last time their son looked anything but angry and resentful in their presence

but now he looked tense still but with a certain level of calmness they didn’t think he was capable of

their silence maybe worried you a bit, thinking it was due to you, maybe you were being too much, maybe they were offended by you calling them mr. and mrs. clifford

you hadnt meant to make them feel old or anything

but michael’s mother was the first to break out of her shock

and her smile was weak, almost like she was used to walking around eggshells, but her words were welcoming

michael’s father was a bit more aloof but you assumed that was where michael got his personality from

you were just glad they were so open and kind with you

asking you questions about yourself, about you and michael

they warmed up to you quick and obviously liked talking to you

and you were so grateful that they liked you right from the get go with you just being yourself - even though they were different from you, just like michael was

definitely paying attention at each affectionate, intimate gesture between you

that michael allowed

gestures like that with their son ended a long time ago and they couldnt believe how different he seemed from the last time they saw him

not that different though because he was still as unmannerly as possible which seemed to be highlighted when next to you who were trying extra hard to be as polite and well mannered as possible

it came to a rear when you started mentioning about michael when he was younger

honestly just wanting cute baby stories or what he was like in high school because you always wondered how different life would be if you had met years before

but that just caused some snarky remarks from michael’s father

which made it very obvious where the strain between michael and his parents laid

indifference and lack of belief in him, almost lack of care and his resentment and determination to show all their bad assumptions about him true

it lead to a very tense conversation between michael and his father just short of screaming with his mother doing nothing to come to his defense

so you did

and it took a lot of guts

especially because you wanted them to like you so much yet here you were standing against them, denying and defending michael with your last breath, basically serving as a shield between you and michael

even with how small and fragile you looked

and the silence that followed was deafening

michael because he was so in love and grateful and his parents because they really were surprised at what they were hearing and this new side of their son

but part of what made you radiate so much goodness was your ability to make others feel that

so eventually things de-escalated

michael was still as snappy as always and didnt really talk to his parents except to grumble and glare but you served as a buffer

so it didnt end in complete disaster

and his parents did end up liking you, told michael that at the end of the day

not that michael cared if they liked you or not

their opinion wouldnt have changed anything

the only reason he even let them meet you was because you wanted it

otherwise, michael would never have let his perfect girlfriend waste her time with them

plus of course they would like you, how could someone not especially when they were never expecting him to have someone they saw to be out of his league

you were a keeper

even told you that you could call them mom and dad

please michael would actually recoil and tell you not to because they did not deserve that

to which you glared at him to be nice because you thought it was a sweet gesture and made you think of eventually getting married to him which obviously made you very happy

and you were still glad you had met them, despite everything

because you got to show them how important and special michael was

they definitely saw that in the way you loved him

a list of things about Star Wars: The Last Jedi

TLJ felt like watching two completely separate movies. .. . one i deliriously LOVED and one i spit upon and shake its profane dust off my sandals

THE GOOD

“ive got an urgent message for General Hux” “YOUR REBELLION IS DOOMED” “yeah... im holding for General Hux”

it straight up took me a minute and a half of this scene to figure out this was actually the start of the movie. it felt like one of those pre-movie skits where it seems like a movie but then anthropomorphic M&Ms tell you to turn your cell phone off. was it just me or were there a LOT more comic moments in TLJ compared to almost every other star wars movie? anyway i loved it even tho it gave the movie a slight someone-made-this-while-high-on-LSD feel

Leia USING THE FORCE AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Obi-Wan couldnt just come back and visit Luke forever, he faded away at some point. is this no longer true??? DOES THIS MEAN ANYONE CAN COME BACK IF THEY WANT??? why was yoda so physical even as a ghost that he could whack luke on the head

summoning lightning like alright this is a new Jedi power im adding to my arsenal

POE'S CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT he turned from a kamikaze into a leader who's able to see the big picture and walk away, im so proud

it was truly awesome... i couldnt stop grinning it seeing it the 2nd time... "I CANNOT BE BETRAYED, I CANNOT BE BEATEN, I CAN SEE HIS MIND" & then he narrates the entire process of Kylo killing him i was LIVING. everyone theorized for so loooooong and so hard about what form Snoke's control over Kylo took and how it would be possible for him to break it,, , , and then he just DOES IT JUST LIKE THAT by SHEER MISDIRECTION FOLKS I AM SO ALIVE

THE TEAM UP FIGHT

i love lightsaber fights so much i would very nearly give up my critical integrity for a single awesome duel and this was,,, so awesome

when Rey drops her lightsaber to catch it again and cut that guys knees out from under him

when Snoke is cut in half and then the lightsaber rockets towards Kylo and Rey's hand SHOOTS INTO THE FRAME to catch it 👌👌👌

this scene makes the movie for me honestly. as of now im in a state of uneasy ceasefire with TLJ and the sequel trilogy as a whole. if the scene of Luke facing Kylo did not exist, TLJ would probably be dead to me

absolutely everything about Luke was so completely epic in this scene. even though he barely said anything, even the way he stood was epic. im not sure how Hamill did this but it was everything i ever wanted

THE BAD

Luke should have LIFTED HIS X WING OUT OF THE WATER WITH THE FORCE AT SOME POINT GOSH DARN. i knew from the moment we saw the submerged x wing that this moment was meant to happen.... but then it DIDN’T. like PLEASE. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SO GOOD I NEED TO SEE THIS

the casino subplot. . . it was awesome for Finns character development but couldn’t he have developed character over an actually materially relevant story arc.. . .

BB-8 didn’t fight Dark BB-8 like what the hell honestly

for what earthly reason does Kylo need to wear his pants up to his armpits. is he TRYING to look like a doofus

why wasn't Lando the master codebreaker. like quite frankly, give me one good reason. why. no. there are no good reasons. when is Lando going to come into it you cowards

im trying to keep my cool but this is a huge, enormous, and vital problem i have with this movie and whoever came up with that should be shot

Luke, in a brief moment of insanity, ignited his lightsaber over his sleeping nephew's bed to assassinate him because of a vision

LUKE SKYWALKER the guy who wouldnt believe that DARTH VADER, ENSLAVER OF WORLDS, SLAUGHTERER OF CHILDREN, MASS MURDERER OF THOUSANDS, was a lost cause and who refused to kill him, TRIED TO KILL HIS APPRENTICE IN HIS SLEEP

like... do you see my problem?

character assassination. it is ludicrously greater-than-Anakin Skywalker levels of overreaction to a Force premonition that Luke would see a vision of darkness and instantly move to slice his sleeping, defenseless nephew in half, and even in Luke's version of the story Luke is legitimatly the bad guy. he brought about the future he was afraid of, just like Anakin

because of this background, every interpretation is blown wide open to reasonably see Kylo as the victim and Luke's actions as those of a villain. of course he had to defend himself? it's legitimately possible to construe the subsequent killing of the other students as self-defense as well. if they wake up to find Ben having "killed" Luke? anything could have happened, Kylo could honestly have done barely anything bad up to this point and have been driven to the dark side on that one night

it's going to take.... so much work.... to walk this back. obviously Kylo's a villain now, because of what he's chosen to do since then, but for Luke to come out of this not looking like trash, they would have to provide SO MUCH more backstory including the "dark" things Kylo had done to make Luke suspect him, and have him probably be actively seeking darkness while under Luke's tutelage. and then Luke still seems like a fool and a betrayor

maybe they WANT Luke to come off as a legitimately bad person? i've seen some interpretations of TLJ as tearing down "legends" by showing everyone as flawed people, teaching the lesson of not deifying people to Rey AND the audience as well. if thats true and they actually want me to believe Luke is not worth believing in, i'm sorry but i reject that

luke skywalker is not a bad person

rey said "you didnt fail Kylo, Kylo failed you" WHICH... its true that Kylo failed in all his actions after this. but if this is the unmitigated truth about what happened that day, Luke definitely failed Kylo, thats not really arguable

the overall thesis of the sequel trilogy seems to be "there's no point to any of this"

a powerful student turns to the dark side and destroys the Jedi Order. an authoritarian regime destroys the republic and takes over. a small band of resistance fighters rallies against great odds. a Force sensitive from a desert planet teaches herself the Force from old Jedi books after her teacher evaporates into the Force after teaching like 1 lesson. everyone Leia loves dies

guys... i'm tired

it's just exhausting. what is the point? in the sequel trilogy we've seen the republic destroyed, the resistance decimated and harried from place to place until theyre down to 12 people on the millennium falcom. there's only one movie left. they're going to come back from nothing and destroy the first order and then smile at each other in the ashes?

why?>??? what are they going to do? build a republic again? is rey going to build a new jedi order? we've seen how that worked out

there's nothing to believe in here. HOPE is such a strong theme in the sequel trilogy. "as long as there's light we've got a chance" "leia sent me here with hope" "the galaxy has lost its hope, the spark is out." "hope is like the sun, if you only believe in it when you can see it you'll never make it through the night." like good grief. constantly hammering on the need to have hope, but WHY?

what's the point of defeating the imperials, spending your life trying to build something good in the galaxy, trying to build a family, when you're only going to have to do it all again in your old age, when everyone you love is dead?

i cant see any hope if this is the ending for the OT characters, so i powerfully struggle to care about and cheer for Rey, Poe, and Finn. what's the point in anything they're doing? what's the point in the sacrifices they're making? it might turn out just exactly like it did for Luke, Leia, and Han, spending their old age in loneliness, sorrow, and violence

if this is the way history repeats itself, you probably should just make out like the stuttering codebreaker. "dont join"

Hey you, during the course of this season i Have seen more and more people leave the fandom or grow disinterested in spn, and im confused why that it. I get why maybe s12 wouldnt be a fave season but if I look at the wank and bads of the previous ones (destiel fiasco in/out the show s9, charlies death Dean cruelty to Cas in s10, Dean/baby love interest s11) s12 didnt really do much that would drive people away en masse I feel? Yet it seems like more people left it :(

Idk, maybe it was that more vocal people drifted off? I always feel like people’s attention spans are usually only a few years or so. I mean, I feel like I’ve been in the fandom a Long Time and I’ve only been here since the end of season 9, so really this is only my 3rd hiatus, and coming up to 4th year watching with fandom, on a 12 year show I’ve been watching for nearly 10 years, for the most part as a moderately casual viewer… I think I clock up about 5 years major interest and then drift, based on me vs several other things like how invested I was in LotR or Harry Potter or Animorphs, or whatever (to go back in time to my pre-teen interests :P) and it’s not a bad thing and I still love 2 of those franchises and have engagement in them but back to being a casual fan (if “religiously watches LotR at Christmas” is casual allowing for cultural/social stuff, but I’m not composing Legolas/Aragon smut in my teenage journal in secret code any more :P)

Anyway the season 8 bubble of fandom could be deflating about now - that’s long enough for people to feel they’ve given the show their full attention and it’s still going so it’s getting tiring. That’s the major feeling I get - people are exhausted and we had a baby boomer fandom around season 8 so that ~generation~ of fans is now reaching the natural end of its attention span in a very human natural way. But there’s a ton of new or newer fans who are still enjoying the heck out of it, and the fandom’s still huge and full of people with a commitment to the show or ships. And some people don’t work like that and are loyal from start to finish or commit to TV shows fully to see them to their end. I would dump a show I was getting bored of but come back to watch the end later in a big marathon to find out what happened, but Supernatural hasn’t given me a reason to get totally un-invested until that time… I suspect a lot of people will watch the entire show ONE DAY but don’t want to do fandom and give it all their leisure time any more either.

But yeah I think you’ve named some pretty big mass exodus moments (I would like to clarify “Dean/baby” is “Dean/Amara-as-an-infant” right? Because Dean/Baby totally was a thing in 11x04 and it was GLORIOUS :P) and I feel like I DID lose people from my dash all through the time I’ve been watching. Heck, I hit up fandom right after 9x18, and started following people, and that was the JIB of “we don’t play it that way” so I immediately was following several abandoned blogs and I’d barely even started to get to know the landscape :P I feel like people HAVE been jumping ship the entire time and I remember most of those instances as sadly clearing several favourite people off my dash or turning them into different fandom blogs that I eventually unfollowed out of confusion…

I don’t know, I think people leave when they want to leave because as long as you like the core of a thing and it holds your interest, you can forgive or ignore or scowl at but hold out for better the bad bits and problematic parts. I’m sort of weary of them killing all the women and PoC but I’m still at the stage where I identify it sucks, but I still care too much about the main characters that I’m sort of stuck on this ride with them.

(I have 2x21 paused on the screen next to me right as Sam meets all the special children, aka introducing Lily the lesbian who dies horribly as a disposable red shirt to show how awful this situation is, and Jake, a black guy whose power is being super strong and to fall to Azazel’s manipulation, kill Sam, and then get killed with extreme overkill by Sam. In the same season he set the cops on Gordon, also a black man who was really aggro and cruel, but in the next season becomes a monster and Sam kills him also one of the most brutal kills he has up there with Jake. Basically, the show’s always had some issues and if we carried on watching all the way to season 12, well, apply self-reflection, but at this point if you’ve been watching as long as I have, you just kind of accept the show sucks at certain things, and for ME personally it’s not kicking off the sort of weariness that others felt about Billie and Alicia and Eileen being killed off this season)

… I don’t really have a point, expect about the demographics of fandom during season 8 getting to the end of their interest now. I don’t think EVERYONE who did will leave, and we’re getting fresh blood all the time, but I think that’s just part of the nature of being in fandom. I don’t think season 12 is particularly bad from my experience, although some pretty high profile bloggers have gotten exhausted - again, they’ve been maintaining blogs and producing content since single digit seasons so they’ve contributed a LOT to the fandom and there’s a fatigue about contribution as well…

That’s partially why I meta and gif and write fic and occasionally make random shitposts… I don’t want to burn out because any one of those things on its own can get pretty boring, even writing fic. Or especially, idk, as a writer I tend to bounce around projects, so this is keeping me weirdly focused on writing my original fiction on one side of my brain and fan fic on the other and it seems to be a better way of splitting my attention… But I digress. :P

I know how to manage my own brain to some degree but I have a lot of time to contemplate and self-reflect on why I’m in fandom and what I get out of it, and mostly I just conclude I’m bored and house-bound and I’ve found a few tried and tested things that get me some positive attention in a non-weird rat with a pleasure button way like people running hate blogs or something… But I know my own head and that I can get bored of stuff so I marathon a lot of other shows and think about other things than fandom stuff as much as possible and just let this be the gutter my brain drains into when my attention span is too shot to hell to do anything else and I just want to slump over a keyboard and do the easiest activity I know bar playing Animal Crossing for hours.

Other people with busier lives and actual jobs and energy and limbs that don’t just randomly stop working when they do anything for more than 5 minutes and so on might not be casual fans but they make a certain space in their life for fandom and get out of it what they need but it’s a high quality demand thing so if their carefully allocated me-time isn’t rewarding them like it should it’s totally their right to go find another OTP to amuse themselves with a fandom producing stuff they want to see and a media source that’s giving them what they want immediately and in a way they don’t have to “look for scraps” as some people were saying about Destiel in season 9, 10 and 11 while things were thinner on the ground.

And as one of the too-much-free-time fandom contributors, I’ve got an enormous luxury to stick out things people who don’t have time for being jerked around or over-analysing to find what they want to see have… Although I’ll try and pass on my thoughts for the people with less time to think them to try and help them enjoy themselves as much as possible :P Anyway I think a whole range of reasons happen that people might get fatigued of the show especially as lives change and people blogging enthusiastically one day might get a job or a new relationship or a dog or SOMETHING and just not spend quite so much time online and then discover they don’t NEED to spend so much time on fandom, and drift naturally… Then try and find some reason on the show they’ve stopped watching, but often it’s just that things look worse after time away when the spark has started to fade because it’s not being nurtured in the same way any more.

And 12 years is a LONG ASS TIME to be invested in something, so I think in general the fatigue or changing interests is all over the place and we might see it more and more as people drift… People who might watch it all as a catch up one day maybe a year or two after the show ends, but just don’t have the patience to stay in fandom and put in that energy over and over and over.

Also the show is in a really weird place where it has some of the best writers it’s ever had in Berens and the newbie writers, and Dabb’s doing some fascinating things with the plot, but Buckleming are the executors of the story, in several interpretations of that phrase :P And there are people who skip MotW and find them unimportant or would judge the season on the plot, not the heart of the story… It’s a pretty precarious place, quality-wise. I think season 11 and 12 are a proper like, silver age revival of the MotW (with Nancy Won and Robbie giving last season a massive boost) where I think those episodes are really innovative and interesting, and the writers are being allowed a lot of freedom to play on THOSE canvases, but while the character development and *reasons* for the story have been fascinating and important, obviously 5 of the plot episodes this latest season were Buckleming and crucial to watch to know wtf was going on, even though the writers of those episodes seem to have such a terrible problem with hating the audience (literally, it’s in their scripts and off-screen comments), the genre, second drafts, common human decency towards characters and understanding why they’re important, pacing, you name it… :P So the show literally has 2 faces these days and depending on which one you see when you think of season 12, probably defines how you feel about the show as a whole and all that. I treat the plot episodes these days as a necessary evil between episodes written by people who actually like the show and care about it and its characters (see also: my non-stop sobbing about 12x22 since it aired)… But seeing the other face can really cast a cloud over the show and I’ve seen it make people wonder why the other writers even try. (I mean Perez did an incredible salvage job on Crowley in 12x15 only for it to immediately get yanked away again the next time BL wrote him and I think only they really got to play with him for the rest of the season, meaning all that work to make it seem important and thematically relevant that Perez had set up in 12x12 and messed with in 12x15 ended up being for nothing and Dabb had no time to do anything deep with Crowley, because 12x13 turns out to be the big Crowley & Rowena farewell episode, except for how it flubbed the entire premise of Grand Send Off Episode a la 7x10 or something despite all the ingredients being there…)

I am just rambling now so… Gonna hit post. Hope this makes sense :P This is just my interpretation of how people are feeling/how fandom as an entity seems to work, so it’s pretty subjective and others might feel very differently especially people who have been in negative echo chambers while I’ve built myself a reasonably positive one plus SENSIBLE and CONSTRUCTIVE wanky criticism that doesn’t go off the deep end :P

Imagine you just bought a case of bottled water. Would you idly open and pour 10 or 15 bottles down the drain? Of course not. That would be wasteful. That would be stupid.

But for years that is exactly what I did: I left the faucet on when I brushed my teeth. There was no specific reason. Like many things in life, that’s just what I did — even though I had heard the statistics, like how in the U.S. alone we can save hundreds of millions of gallons of water a year if we all turn off the faucet while we brush our teeth.

That’s a huge number — yet like with many statistics that show the impact of an aggregate change, I didn’t feel a personal connection.

But the idea of dumping brand-new bottles of water down the drain? I could definitely connect with that image.

Now, turning off the water while I brush my teeth is just what I do. So yeah: Michael Phelps got in my head.

And for good reason.

The United Nations estimates that close to half of the world’s population will live in countries with limited water supplies by the year 2030. That’s why this is Michael’s second year as global ambassador for Colgate’s #EveryDropCounts campaign.

Studies show that nearly 75 percent of Americans who were aware of Colgate’s campaign say it influenced their personal actions in terms of saving water, and almost 60 percent say they turn off the faucet more often when brushing their teeth.

Each time you turn off the faucet you can save between 2 and 4 gallons of water, which is between 15 and 30 bottled waters… and if we all do, well over 500 million gallons of water a day.

Which, even though math is not my friend, adds up to over 31 million plastic bottles of water.

I talked with Michael about why life after swimming and why he’s so involved in water conservation — and also about motivation, achieving huge goals, and his struggles with anxiety and depression.

There are tons of things you could have gotten involved in, and with your profile, tons of organizations that would welcome your involvement. So why water conservation?

I’ve approached my whole career exactly the way I do now: The things I’m a part of are things I believe in, that we already do in our daily lives.

So when Colgate asked me to be a global ambassador for water conservation, to help spread a message we already care about… it was a no brainer. Water obviously plays a significant role in my life, but this is something my wife and I were already trying to teach our son. Boomer understands that when the Colgate sticker on the stopper turns red it’s time to turn the faucet off. And someday Beckett will, too.

As a parent, to know that your kids can be taught that lesson at such an early age, and that it will make such a significant impact worldwide… that’s incredible to watch.

It’s a powerful campaign, one I’m honored to be a part of.

You come from a where results are measurable… when you drew the analogy of wasting bottles of water, that really struck a nerve with me.

Stats and numbers make a huge difference, especially when they’re relatable. When you can show people not just the total potential change but also how they can make a real difference… that’s when they’ll jump onboard.

But it’s also really powerful to know just how big an impact we can make if we all come together.

Most of us take water for granted. We turn on the faucet and it’s there. But that’s not the case for hundreds of millions of people around the world. There is no “never ending supply” of water. In this country we could potentially not have clean water within our lifetime.

That’s a scary thought. Water is at the center of everything.

Our pipes froze for a day last winter and you would have thought the world was coming to an end.

(Laughs.) Exactly.

The other day someone said, “When I brush my teeth, I think about you.” While that’s a strange thing to hear (laughs), it shows we’re making a difference. People are listening. They understand what we’re trying to do. And they’re buying into it.

Saving water is something we can all easily do — without any effort at all — every single day.

I asked LinkedIn users to send me questions they would love to ask you. Here’s one: Many people worry that dedicating themselves to achieving a huge goal means they will miss out on other things. Do you feel all the sacrifices you made were worth it? Would you go back and change anything?

That’s an awesome question. The short answer is no, I wouldn’t change a thing.

I did miss some high school dances and parties, I did lose the chance to hang out with people… but I didn’t care, because I knew I had the opportunity to do something no one else had ever done. That made me willing to make those sacrifices.

If you really do want to do something significant, you’re going to have to make sacrifices. You have to. That’s just part of it.

So I wouldn’t change anything: Not the good, not the bad, not the ugly. All those experiences helped mold me into who I am… and for the last two years, for the first time in my life I like who I am as a person.

It’s hard to imagine that winning 28 Olympic medals wouldn’t make you happy.

For the longest time I looked at myself strictly as a swimmer and not as a human being.

But still: I wouldn’t change anything because I am so happy with my life today.

Was it hard and grueling and brutal? Yes. But if you look at the most successful people, they do things when they don’t necessarily want to do them.

That’s what makes you great: Doing things when you don’t want to do them… because you know that is what it takes to get you to where you want to go.

What motivated you more: Winning, or losing?

That’s easy. Losing. (Laughs.)

I definitely remember the losses because those were times I wasn’t as prepared as I thought I could have been. Losses were wakeup calls that I needed to get my butt in gear, and focus on what I needed to do to win a gold medal, break a record, etc.

I’m really hard on myself. I tend to beat myself up. But if I’m devoting time and energy to something, I want to do it right.

I’m won’t do something if I’m not willing to put in time and effort to do it as well as I possibly can.

Lots of parents on LinkedIn asked for your advice for helping a teenager who suffers from anxiety or depression.

Even though every kid is different, and every kid will need something different, it all starts with being there to support them.

One thing I always say is make sure the communication line is always open. When someone goes into isolation that’s a huge red flag, and should definitely set off alarms.

Another tool is something we implemented in our Foundation over the last year. There are 8 basic emotions. Whenever you’re feeling one, dig deeper into why you feel that way and what caused that feeling. That can help you address the underlying problem instead of just dwelling with that emotion.

I have used that technique for years, and still use it today.

I sometimes do that without thinking. If I’m feeling stressed, I’ll think, “Okay, why exactly do I feel this way?” That lets me deal with the causal factor instead of just trying to “reduce my anxiety level.”

Me too. I try to take a step back and think, for example, about why I am getting so angry about this situation, this person, etc. It’s a really good tool, one you can use

It also helps when you remember not to take things so personally. If I’m driving and someone cuts me off, I’ll get mad and think, “What is his problem…” but what just happened really doesn’t matter. It doesn’t need to affect me at all.

I’m learning to pause, to take that deep breath, and realize that it’s okay. It’s not the end of the world.

I use those tools and I’m still trying to sharpen them up.

One thing that’s obvious is you don’t mind talking about your own anxiety, stress, depression…

When I openly talk about these things it’s really helpful: I learn more about myself and about what I’m doing to change.

On a broader level, I think it’s great that athletes and celebrities — and kids — are opening up more about mental health, because it’s something we need to address. There are all these stigmas… people assume that if you’re an athlete you’re incredibly strong mentally as well… but I’m a human being too. I struggle with the same things.

It’s cool when athletes show the world that they’re not superhuman, that they’ not unbeatable. They’re human.

It also helps when kids open up about their struggles, because that helps other kids realize they’re not the only ones.

That’s why we produced the documentary “Angst.” It shows how kids in middle school and high school deal with depression and anxiety. While it has been shown in a number of schools across the country, we’re hoping to make that happen in every single school because it is so important for kids to see other kids open up and talk about their struggles — to show that it’s okay.

To show that it’s okay to not be okay.

I’ve had scary times and depressed times since the Olympics, and for me those are a part of life. Those times are part of who I am. I have to accept that, and be as prepared as I can when those times happen so I can keep learning and keep taking small steps forward.

Speaking of small steps forward. What have you learned about yourself in the process?

If we’re talking about mental health, I joke about it because I know it sounds really basic, but the biggest thing I’ve learned is to communicate. (Laughs.)

I was great at compartmentalizing. To finally learn to let out some things out was like a huge release. To be my open, honest, authentic self… that took me a long time to find.

It’s an incredible feeling to know you’re being yourself and being authentic in everything you do. When you have that… that’s the equation for success. Nothing will stand in your way because your mind is so powerful.

What got you to that point?

The key is to understand that it is okay to not be okay — and you’re not alone. You’re not by yourself. People are willing to help.

It’s hard to ask for help, but it’s really important to ask for help when you need it.

I struggled with that. I was afraid of rejection, was afraid of how it would feel if people couldn’t or wouldn’t help me. I couldn’t handle that answer.

Now I can. Now I realize there are plenty of people that will not only help you — they genuinely want to see you succeed.

But was there a specific moment…?

The tipping point for me was after my second DUI. I felt I didn’t want to be on this earth anymore. I didn’t want to be alive.

That was the time I knew I had to make a change. I had to be ready to make that change.

And that caused me to be vulnerable. “Vulnerable” is a scary word. But going through that change saved my life.

And it changed my life. I know now that I’m I’m still going to get depressed. I’m still going to go through periods of high anxiety. But I understand that is part of who I am. And now, I’m comfortable in my own skin.

Depression isn’t something you have once and then it goes away forever. Depression can come back, and as long as you’re as prepared as you can be you, you can work through it and keep taking steps forward. You can keep making progress.

Trust me. I’ve seen it. I’ve lived it.

I’m eager to move forward, to grow, to learn from the experiences I’ve had and that I’m sure I will have…

That’s why it’s actually exciting to talk about this part of my journey — because I know that if I keep working, keep growing, keep learning… my life can be even better than it already is.
