I drew all of my OCs as kiddos!! This is them when they're around 9, 10! Explanations of what they're going through at this age below the cut.

Horus: He's constantly dealing with his father and trying his hardest to earn his father's praise, often overworking himself.

Vincent: Around the age his mom left. Him and Billy became an outlet for their father's anger.

Jonathan: Around the age Audrey was just a baby and he was helping his mom take care of her.

Mischa: Around the time his family moved to England from Russia. He barely knew any English.

Raphael: Before he moved to England, often bullied by classmates due to his more feminine appearance.

Billy: Around the time he was supposed to go to Germany on the trains but snuck off. Also when he found his father's corpse.

Audrey: A few years after her and Jonathan's mother died, her and her brother were very close.

Anette: Dealt with a lot of harassment from Ophelia's family due to her family's lower economic status and her race.

Ophelia: Right before her childhood took a dark turn, she was a very sweet and innocent little girl.

A young Raphael comes home early from school after being bullied.

Note: Their speech would be in French, but to make things easier for myself and the reader, this is just a translation of what they would be saying!

School

Raphael had been so excited to go to school today. His mother had brushed his hair and taken such care putting the long, blonde locks into a beautiful braid, and he wore a brand new white shirt with flowing sleeves. ‘Just like the poets wore’, his father had told him before he left. He had felt so pretty when he had left home and was so excited to show off to his peers, yet when he came home, he burst through the door in tears, and instantly ran past his mother to his bedroom.

The young boy’s new shirt was dirty and in tatters, his hair loose and a mess of tangled knots. Raphael throws himself onto his bed and pushes his face into his pillow, muffling his heartbroken sobs. It only takes his mother a few moments before she’s quietly stepping into the room, a look of concern plastered over her face. She sits on the edge of his bed and rests a hand against his back, rubbing it to try and comfort her crying son.

“My sweet boy…what’s the matter? You’re home early…”

Raphael digs his little fingers into the soft fabric of his pillow, not wanting to upset his mother with what had happened at school. But after a few more soft, shaken sobs, he pushes himself up, his body angled away from her and his messy hair shielding his face.

“Raphael…please look at me…” She urges softly.

With a sniffle and a moment of hesitation, the child turns and faces his mother. His face is bruised, his eyes red from his crying. Instantly, her heart drops as her concern grows.

“Oh no…what happened? Who did this to you?” The woman carefully cups his face, which he initially flinches at but soon welcomes her comforting touch as he shuts his eyes.

“The kids at school.”

“Why would they do something like this?” Her gaze falls to his ripped shirt. “Oh, baby, your shirt is all torn…are you alright?”

Raphael’s blue eyes meet hers for a moment before they well with fresh tears and he lowers his head with a sob that catches in his throat. He throws his arms around his mother, pushing his bruised face into her belly and squeezing onto her tightly, as if she would disappear were he to let go. “They were so mean to me, mama! I didn’t do anything wrong, I didn’t do anything to deserve it!”

His mother rests a hand against his head, gently running her hand over his hair as she listens to him. “It’s okay, Raphael, I know you didn’t do anything wrong..” Her voice is soft and warm, without any hint of harshness or judgment. “Go on, my dove…”

Raphael sits up once again, wiping the tears from his cheeks as a soft hiccup leaves him. “They hit my books out of my hands…then they called me the cruelest names…They ripped my shirt and pulled my hair and knocked me down and hit me…” He looks over his new shirt which was reduced nearly to rags. Through the tears in the soft fabric, little red scratches can be seen on his bare skin from the children who attacked him. “I’m sorry, mama, they ruined my new shirt…I didn’t want them to…”

His mother caresses his cheek once again; her heart hurt to see her beloved son so distressed and in pain. “Oh, please, your shirt is the last of my worries, sweetheart. You are my primary concern, forever and always…”

Raphael was silent for a moment as he collected his thoughts, before he spoke in a hush of a voice, “Mama…am I a freak?”

His mother meets his big, tearful eyes and she is quick to shake her head. “Of course you’re not a freak, Raphael, why would you think that?”

Raphael’s fingertips fiddle idly with the ends of his hair, a nervous habit of his that he has done ever since he had hair long enough. By keeping his hands busy, it helped him think better. At least, he felt as if it did. “Those kids…they said I was a freak. They said I’m not a real boy, and that I look like a girl and I’m trying to be one…is there something wrong with me? Am I…broken? Why aren’t I like the other boys?”

The woman’s lips purse at his questions, her frown deepening at his complicated questions. Of course, her son was beautiful and perfect to her in every way. She never had a problem with how he expressed himself and actually encouraged it. But the world was often very cruel, and very unaccepting.

“Come here, dove.” She pats the front of her legs, and Raphael slides to the floor in front of her, his back against her legs. She sighs softly as she mentally sorts out how to explain things to someone of such a young age in a way Raphael would understand. His mother takes his brush from his nearby nightstand, and gets to work on carefully brushing out the knots in his hair.

“You are not a freak, and you are not broken, Raphael. You are beautiful and talented and so full of love, and you’re not afraid to express yourself how you want, however it feels right. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, okay?” She takes in a soft breath, trying her best to brush out a particularly large knot without hurting him too much. “But people can be very cruel…even children. There will always be people who disagree with how others may present themselves; there will always be people with hate in their hearts, but that does not mean there’s anything wrong with you.”

Raphael winces softly as she has to tug a bit at his tender scalp, but he remains still for her. “But…why shouldn’t I just look how everyone else looks, if people are just going to be mean to me for…being me?”

She sighs, tilting her head a bit as she continues the task in front of her, making quick progress of straightening out his hair. “My sweet boy, you are asking such deep questions…” His mother finally brushes out his hair and she combs her slender fingers through his soft locks before kissing his head. “I know it’s scary when people are mean, but that shouldn’t discourage you from being who you are. Because you are a beautiful individual, Raphael. You are my radiant little dove.”

Raphael turns so he can face her, his tears seeming to finally cease. “I can still look how I want…? Even if the other children are mean?”

She smiles sweetly, holding his tiny face in her hands. “Never be afraid to be yourself, Raphael. Because even though there may be people who don’t approve, you will find people who accept you and love you as you are. Never forget that.” His mother places a sweet kiss against his forehead, then tucks some of her son’s hair behind his ear. “Now, papa should be home soon, and I’ll ask him if we can go get a treat after dinner. How does that sound?”

Raphael nods with a beam of a grin, rising to his feet and hugging his mother tightly. “Thank you, mama…I love you.”

❤️ Sgt. Horus Hunt ❤: A red rank Bobby who works to protect Uncle Jack and has been looking after him after he came off his Joy. Horus is a Downer but he keeps it hidden and he carries a lot of guilt and self hate.

🧡 Sgt. Vincent Morris 🧡: A white rank Bobby who works at Hayworth Labs. He is very sadistic and mean and abuses his power, but under the surface, he struggles with PTSD and religious trauma.

💛 Jonathan Wesley 💛: A blue rank Bobby who used to patrol around Nick Lightbearer's home before Nick went on holiday. Now he works under Horus at the Broadcasting Tower. He is recovering from coming off his Joy.

💚 Audrey Wesley 💚: A Wastrel woman who was never able to take Joy and is fighting to make everyone come to their senses before they starve. Jonathan Wesley's little sister, whom he forgot about.

💙 Billy Morris 💙: Was one of the few children to escape the trains. He now runs errands for the citizens of Wellington Wells in exchange for food, board, or war memorabilia. He is also a pickpocket and is Vincent Morris's little brother.

🩵 Ophelia Springs 🩵: Used to be a musical duo with her lover Anette before they were discovered. Ophelia is now on Joy and has been forced to work at the Reform Club.

💜 Anette Thompsin 💜: A Wastrel who used to be a musical duo with her lover. When they were discovered, Anette was given Joy but couldn't stomach it, so she is being kept at the Labs with the Plague victims and is being researched.

🤍 Raphael Alexandre 🤍: A red rank Bobby who attempts to hide his French descent. He is very anxious and prone to anxiety attacks.

🖤 Michael (Mischa) Avelin 🖤: A blue rank Jewish Bobby who fled with his family from Russia during the war. He was shot in the knee by German soldiers when he was younger and now wears a leg brace and occasionally limps.

I don't know why but my brainrot wanted to do what my OCs' relationship with canon characters is like, so I decided to start with the main three. If you guys wanna know how my OCs are with a certain character, please don't hesitate to let me know!

How my characters feel about...Arthur Hastings!

HORUS HUNT

Horus only really knows of Arthur from what Sally has told him. He's very wary of Arthur and often warns Sally to be careful around him.

JONATHAN WESLEY

Jonathan doesn't really know Arthur now, but he knew Percy pretty well since Johnny and Percy were around the same age. He used to get on pretty well with Arthur too.

VINCENT MORRIS

Vincent never knew Arthur, only knows him from when Arthur confronted Dr. Verloc.

AUDREY WESLEY

Audrey was in the same grade as Sally and Arthur. She never much liked Arthur because she felt like Sally could do much better than him.

BILLY MORRIS

Billy has never met Arthur except maybe in passing in town.

OPHELIA SPRINGS

Ophelia knew of him when she was a kid, and she saw him when he snuck into the Reform Club, but she hasn't really interacted much with him. She knew of his father, however, and stayed clear of the Hastings house due to how his father would look at her.

ANETTE THOMPSIN

Anette knew of him when they were kids, but pretty much only knew him as "the boy that the Boyle girl likes".

RAPHAEL ALEXANDRE

Raphael knows of him due to Raphael's work often landing him at the Department of Printing where Arthur worked. He was very friendly with Arthur (and thought him a bit cute), until Raphael was summoned to the office when Arthur went Downer and he had to clean up that mess.

MICHAEL AVELIN

Michael has run into Arthur a few times on the street but has no opinion on him.
