Only Friends (book & show canon) Parallels with Hurt and Grieve but Don’t Suffer Alone (my fic) 

So…I noticed a while ago that my Sandray fic and the canon of the show (and now the book) shared some very eerie commonalities, and I just needed to make a list to keep track of all the things that were happening that matched up between my canon and the show/book’s canon, because I don’t think anyone would believe me otherwise.

Obviously, if you haven't read my fic, then this post won't make sense, but in case you want to, you can find it here.  

I’m not saying anything with this post. I don’t think P’Den or P’Jojo have read my fic, and even if they have, the book and show canon were finished long before I started writing, but it just really is too uncanny, and sometimes very specific, in how my understanding of the characters/story match up almost exactly with theirs.

NOTE: All parallels listed are unintentional parallels I wrote/posted before canon in the book/show. Some aspects of the show/book are intentionally used in my fic — those are obviously left out of this list.

Sand with his back to ray in bed in ep 5 / his birthday; ray reaching out and touching his shoulder vs. ch 3 of my fic where he gets in bed with his back to ray during his withdrawals and ray hitting his back during his nightmares (posted before ep 5 ever came out)

Ray’s dad beating him in the novel version vs. “If his father knew he was eavesdropping, Ray would get a beating, for sure.” (ch 4, fic)

Sand researching rehab centers for ray in ep 10 vs. sand telling ray he’s already looked into rehab centers in chapter 3

Ray’s dad being the one to try and buy off Sand to force Ray into rehab in the show (ep 7) vs. Ray’s dad forcing Ray into rehab after his withdrawals in my fic (ch. 8)

jojo on ray (twitter): "but i think rayman should be more open with a doctor than with strangers" vs ch 10 when ray refuses to open up beyond his name at group therapy

Ep 10 when ray yells at sand saying "i'm the one who should be upset. you don't have the right to cry" (show) vs. ch 12 when ray says to sand (after seeing the photos of him and jane) “About what? What could you possibly need someone to comfort you about?” 

Sandray hug / show pda at the therapist's office (ep 10 show) vs. when they hug for a long time / show pda on the lawn of the rehab center (ch 12) 

“Why are you asking so many questions? Just say what you want me to do. You're wasting my time” (ray to his therapist in ep 10) vs. “Then you tell me, what is the reason?” He snaps, unable to hold it in any longer. “Aren’t you supposed to tell me what’s wrong with me?” (ray to his therapist in ch 13 of my fic)

"sand please understand me" (ep 10 show) vs. ray just wanting to be SEEN throughout this entire fic 

“Like two stars caught in a gravitational pull and attracted to one another” (novel camping scene part 6) vs. ch 16 “It’s like he’s hyper-tuned to Sand’s body, moving and orbiting around him like a twin star.” (seriously what the fuck)

Ray being insufferable about being boyfriends in ep 11 vs. ray being insufferable about boyfriends/pet names from chapter 17 onwards

Ray pointing out the plum wine in ep 10 and it being sand’s main source of income / sand destroying a jar vs. sand hiding the plum wine from ray in the fic because it’s his main source of income (ch 18, posted after ep 9 but before ep 10)

Bostonray apology in ep 12 (non-apology/insults/easy forgiveness) vs. ch 18 of my fic boston calling ray and saying “i won’t apologize for it” and ray saying “fuck you” / “asshole” and moving on / reconciliation - just overall getting their dynamic and friendship on the nose

The use of Micro’s song เติมน้ำมัน and playing at the record shop / ray singing it in ep 11 vs the same lyrics/song being played over a record player in chapter 19 during Ray’s welcome home party - posted RIGHT before ep 11 came out (literally what the fuck at this one)

Ray telling sand “i’ve never loved someone so much i drove all the way out…” in the novel and indirectly being the first to tell sand he loves him / say i love you vs. ch. 20 of my fic ray almost being the first to say i love you (and he would have, if not for the interruption)

Just general character things that I didn’t fully expect to see happen in canon:

Ray only realizing he needs help through Sand and getting professional help in the show vs. ray only accepting that he needs help after sand tells him rehab will be good (and then getting professional help)

Nick confirmed as part of the friend group even without boston (show/book) vs. sandnick joining the friend group from ch 14 onwards in my fic 

Ray realizing the full weight of his feelings for sand during therapy in the show vs. ray opening up and talking about his feelings for sand to Dr. Duangkamol in the fic

Sand’s subtle alcoholism throughout the show vs. sand’s subtle alcoholism throughout the fic

Sand not focusing on himself / taking care of himself at all throughout the show vs. sand not focusing on himself / taking care of himself at all throughout the fic (ok i know this is generally agreed upon but i started this fic from ep 2 and just..kept it going yall)

Top suffocating Mew with his presence in the show (ep 9 & 10) vs. the same in my fic

Boston distancing himself from the group after they shut him out vs. the same in my fic (literally posted the chapter sand punches him before even ep 5 came out)

Cheum trying (awfully) to be a good friend at the end of the show (ep 12) vs. cheum trying (awfully) to be a good friend in my fic (ch 15 onwards)

Sand and nick being friends since high school (book canon) vs. sand and nick being long time friends in my fic confirmed in ch 21 (this one is tricky b/c i was still writing the chapter when it was confirmed in book canon — but i’m going to count it anyway since i had already written this section before reading book canon)

Ray being protective and taking care of Sand in the show (during the whole Boeing thing) vs. Ray being protective and taking care of Sand in my fic (once they become boyfriends, e.g., when Sand is sick, during sex, and overall wanting to take care of / spoil Sand)

Sand and Mew actually getting along in the show (ep 12) vs. Sand and Mew befriending each other in my fic (ch 14 onwards)

I stopped tracking after the finale aired, so anything that happens beyond chapter 21 in my fic is unable to be counted as a coincidence, since the canon is complete. The book canon is however still being translated and released from multiple sources, and I haven’t gotten around to it all, so there may be more. 

Anyways, I just think this is really freaky and deserves to be seen because I feel slightly crazy for how fucking close I got these characters to canon before it was ever established in canon??? And some are just a bit too on the nose??

@kinnbig tagged for wipmumbledy day, so, please enjoy this snippet of post-canon boston and nick wherein top gets a hall pass from mew eyyy.

Only then does Boston snag his phone off the bedside table and see that he has a couple emails, a couple messages, and one missed call from Top the Domesticated Whore. 

He can't remember the last time he talked to Top. Their fucked up college morass splintered hard after graduation. Boston went to New York alone for a year, then asked Nick to join him. Ray and Sand went on again, off again for years, interspersed with variably successful stints in rehab. Top and Mew got engaged, then waited until marriage equality passed to have a huge, tacky society wedding. 

Ray and Mew's and Nick and Sand's friendships mostly endured and it was through them that they all sporadically came together. At first, Boston had enjoyed watching the lives of the people who threw being a slut in his face crumble while he and Nick figured their shit out and built something that was good and solid and made them happy. 

Eventually it got old. Boston doesn't hate them anymore because he doesn't really think about them. He can't imagine living a life where he peaked at twenty-two. 

"Top called me," Boston says. 

Nick cracks open an eye, unimpressed. "Mew's gonna ground him for a month if he finds out." 

Boston laughs. Mew and Top are very, very happy in public. The last time Boston can remember seeing them together, they'd kept a solid six inches of space between them and not looked at each other the whole night. It was the second worst birthday party Boston had ever attended. He'd actually felt a little bad for Sand. 

"You think they're getting divorced?" 

"I think Mew would kill him first," Nick says. "Couldn't live with the shame."

"True." Boston drums his fingers against Nick's hip. "I'll call him back tomorrow." 

He tosses his phone back on the nightstand, turns off the light, and settles into bed with Nick.

BostonRay childhood friend fic Pt4 is out

First cannon event time. Ray’s mom passes away. The fic is from Boston’s POV mostly. I found it too real to write as Ray because I lost someone when I was young as well. I realize reading it back my blueprint of Ray’s house isn’t great. I didn’t realize Ray’s mothers rooms were on the second floor I assumed the parlor was on the first floor and that Ray moved into his mothers apartments AFTER her death so his original room is somewhere else.

Fans of Bodyguard Ter I’m very sorry but he has to self sacrifice himself for Boston and Ray. Having him leave made me cry but I needed Boston to transform into his cocky independent self without a healthy parental figure around. Both Boston and Ray will now be… like the only friends versions we know. Going forward

Well I’m sad from this part so let’s enjoy some hugs for our two boys they’ll get in the future from their soulmates

Okay for the next part I have two fics currently written but I’m debating posting one at all. It’s one where Ray takes care of Boston when he’s drunk (fun but is it necessary) Or the final part will be about a ill fated party at Boston’s home that destroys Ray’s trust in Boston changing Mew into his emergency contact.

Totally OBSESSED with Mew in Sand's POOR BOY shirt, sleeping next to Ray and Ray finding that so extremely irresistible that he did something that he knew was 1) morally wrong and more importantly against his own moral code and 2) would definitely not be received well. And this is not a run of the mill occurrence either because Mew would definitely not stand for it happening twice and also Ray re-confesses his feelings, meaning that up until this point Mew didn't know that Ray was still harboring feelings for him. One of the things I was trying to get at with my Ray character study fic (yes you should read it!! I put my whole heart into it) is this idea that Ray doesn't see Mew and Sand existing on the same paradigm of his life and therefore his feelings for Mew and Sand are not actually in conflict (in his mind). The reason why I thought that was because of how uncomfortable he looks in this scene where he's directly put into a situation where he has to choose between them. There are many ways he could have handled this situation that wasn't this poorly. For a person who knows just how effective his little puppy eyes are against Sand he's totally rendered useless to using it. He can barely make eye contact, he does a needlessly poor job of explaining the situation, almost like he's trying not to explain, trying not to acknowledge how he's in a situation where Mew and Sand are both vying for his attention. He does end up telling Sand the truth but does it in this extremely awkward, stilted way that makes Sand feels extremely unwanted.

Because the thing is, there is no way he can like Sand for real if he and Mew co-exist. There is no one he can love more than Mew, Mew who is his emergency contact, Mew who loves him in a way his mother failed to do, Mew who saved his life and Mew who still doesn't find him desirable as a romantic partner. This is the absolute most a person can love him (in his mind) and so whatever Sand feels for him, lust, pity, affection is still and will always have to be (in his mind) at a lower sum total. But I digress, you see a similar discomfort on his face when Mew holds up the POOR BOY shirt at him and then he says nothing at all about it. Yes, he's probably just trying to hide that him and Sand have been in a situation where they would share clothes to avoid being teased. But also, the night he actually absconded with this shirt he did not have sex with Sand so he chooses avoidance once more where simply acknowledging the truth and Sand's friendship would have been just as easy if not easier.

And the whole time that Ray is building it up to kiss sleeping Mew, Khaotung is focusing entirely on staring at Book's face but for just the briefest of second right before he does it he looks down, which could be at Mew's lips but I think the gaze goes down past to the shirt. Khaotung does make such intentional acting choices that I'm inclined to believe that it was a moment of those world's (Sand and Mew) colliding for Ray and him forgetting who he is with and more importantly who the feelings are for that he's sitting with in this moment.

Mew challenges him later as to why he would do it if he knew it was wrong and once more he was totally unable to admit to this moment of weakness, because how do you even explain that

Sand unintentionally outlines Ray's major character conflict in this show and I find it so fascinating that the word he used is prioritization not choosing which are fundamentally different things. Because choosing would be simple. Ray would choose Mew in a heartbeat but no one is actually making him choose between them. Mew has as firmly as humanly possible shut that door on him long before Sand was even in the picture. Mew is his best friend and Sand is his lover, by definition they will have to co-exist in Ray's life and he will have to distinguish what he feels for them and come to recognize both forms of love as valuable and important, maybe will have prioritize between them at times but he's not meant to actually leave either of them behind... but how does one do that? Ray who only ever really learnt how to be left behind - how will he ever know to do that?

The one constant that he can come back to.  But her concerns are not completely unfounded, and Ray supposes that’s what makes it more difficult to hear. He had had the very same thoughts when Sand had dropped him off after the outing; but had been too afraid to voice them at the time.

Hello I’m currently writing a BostonRay childhood friend fic and I couldn’t resist adding SandNick in there… now I haven’t had Boston ray kiss. So why do I have Boston and Nick so close on basically their day one? Because BostonNick is truth and life. I probably need to take this scene out but… help me someone plz. I present to you teen pudgy Nick winning everything while SandRay have antics in the front seat:

Nick's cheeks flushed a deep crimson as he sat up abruptly, suddenly aware of the world outside the confines of the car. His gaze darted around, taking in the scene before him. Sand, his best friend, was engrossed in ordering KFC, seemingly oblivious to the intimate moment unfolding in the cramped backseat. Beside Sand, Ray, who was clearly under the influence, clung to his arm, adding further chaos to the already surreal situation.

But amidst the chaos, it was Boston, the epitome of perfection, who held Nick's attention. His heart skipped a beat as he watched Boston, his handsome features relaxed in sleep, his mouth slightly agape, releasing soft snores. It was in this vulnerable state that Boston had entrusted himself to Nick, seeking his care and solace. The weight of that trust settled heavily on Nick's shoulders, filling him with a sense of awe and reverence.

Nick couldn't help but feel a surge of disbelief and wonder. This surreal moment, where the most stunning person he had ever laid eyes upon lay nestled against him, seemed like a dream. The fact that Boston, who had been intimately involved with Nick's mortal enemy, had chosen him to confide in and seek comfort from, made Nick feel like the most cherished and desired person in the entire universe.

In that fleeting moment, as Boston's soft snores filled the air, Nick's heart swelled with a mixture of gratitude, adoration, and a newfound sense of purpose. He vowed silently to protect Boston, to be there for him in every possible way, to cherish and care for him like nobody ever had before.

With determination etched into his features, Nick leaned down and pressed a tender kiss to Boston's forehead, a silent promise of his unwavering devotion. In that moment, the world outside the car ceased to exist, and all that mattered was the bond between them, growing stronger with each passing second.
