Virtual Reality weapon: The Phantom Ruby

The Phantom Ruby is one of the coolest gizmos in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. This post aims to analyze the properties and history it has demonstrated throughout the series.

Powers

The Phantom Ruby is a mysterious object that first came into Sonic’s world after a sudden dimensional breach in the atmosphere, bringing down with it the entirety of Angel Island and sparking interest from several parties. From the get go, this artifact already demonstrated an unprecedented amount of power the likes of which even Eggman sought to replicate (to varying success).

As Tails explains in Sonic Forces, the Phantom Ruby is able to feed false information to the brain and trap its victims in extremely lifelike illusions that can draw from their own thoughts and imagination. This includes Phantom Copies, which can look and act like pre-existing individuals, albeit without "souls."

Perhaps its most interesting property, however, is its ability to react to the sense of being and will of others. Paralleling the Chaos Emeralds' “power enriched by the heart,” it can be said that the Phantom Ruby possesses "power enriched by the mind." This is perhaps better demonstrated in Sonic Mania, where the Hard Boiled Heavies suffer radical changes to their appearance and mannerisms based on the minds of the animals powering them as a result of exposure to the Phantom Ruby.

This trait of the ruby is explored to its extreme in Sonic Channel's Otherworldly Comedy, where Dr. Eggman engulfs the planet in various illusions that reflect the people's own impression of themselves, erasing their memories and having them live out alternate lives and scenarios until then only possible in their dreams. This is done by utilizing a weapon still charged with the aftermath of the Phantom Ruby’s energy. The doctor also uses a modified leftover prototype to power himself up to a form akin to Super Sonic, being able to manifest alternate worlds in a whim and create Phantom Copies of creatures as powerful as Perfect Chaos, seemingly having no limitations in regards to energy consumption like Infinite did, although it's unclear to what extent this prototype was modified.

History

The Phantom Ruby's first chronological appearance, Sonic Mania, has Tails convince Sonic to go and check the unique energy signature detected in Angel Island that caused it to fall to the ocean. Dr. Eggman, who detected that very same signal, has also deployed his elite Eggrobo squad to retrieve its source. The Hard Boiled Heavies, granted new powers and greater freedom of thought by the Phantom Ruby, attempt to escape with it, and thus begins the adventure to prevent the gemstone from falling in the wrong hands.

After Sonic and friends, who are in possession of the seven Chaos Emeralds, wreck Eggman and his Phantom Egg, a mech designed to make use of the Phantom Ruby's energy, the group is taken to what appears to be a dimensional void created by the ruby. There, Super Sonic gets caught in the middle of the conflict between Eggman, riding his Klepto Mobile, and the Phantom King, who at this point has long since betrayed his maker, both fighting to get ahold of the gemstone. In the end, Sonic leaves victorious, being teleported to the future alongside the Phantom Ruby.

In the aftermath of this battle, the Phantom Ruby winds up in front of one of Eggman's facilities. The doctor begins to study it closely, learning how to make use of its abilities after his base is attacked by the Jackal Squad. He performs his first real test on Angel Island, creating copies of Pachacamac's village and Chaos, god of destruction. Seeing it in action, Robotnik deems the jewel even more powerful than the Master Emerald itself.

Beholding the Phantom Ruby's incredible power, Eggman aims to replicate it. In this pursuit, he manufactures various faulty prototypes in Mystic Jungle until he can finally perfect it, gifting the final product to the new leader of his army, Infinite.

Eventually, six months after taking over the world, Eggman orders Infinite to dispose of those prototypes, seeing as he had no need for such liabilities. The jackal does a poor job, however, leaving a few unattended. One in particular, the one he dropped while fighting Silver in Mystic Jungle, is discovered by the Avatar, whose heroism would prove enough to activate it.

At the climax of the Eggman War, Infinite uses his Phantom Ruby's power to summon an illusionary sun above the battlefield, aiming to wipe out all of the resistance. The Avatar manages to dissipate it, however, losing his own prototype in the process. Weakened from spending much of his energy to create that sun, Infinite tries to take on Sonic who, aided by the Avatar, beats the mercenary one final time. This causes him to lose control of his powers and be pulled into the Eggman Empire Fortress' decoy reactor, ultimately being consumed by the original Phantom Ruby.

After Infinite's defeat, Eggman reveals he has incorporated the Phantom Ruby into his new Death Egg Robot, claiming to have surpassed Infinite as the ultimate form. Just as the Phantom Egg before it, however, this mech is destroyed by Sonic, his classic self and the Avatar, ending the war and sending both the Phantom Ruby and Classic Sonic back to the past.

Classic Sonic, returning from the future after aiding the Resistance in winning the war, is still chasing after the Phantom Ruby. The gemstone falls into the hands of Heavy Magician, who uses it to reassemble her fellow Hard Boiled Heavies. Thus, Sonic is forced to go on his earlier adventure again, though this time accompanied by Mighty and Ray as well.

As Eggman's plan once again fails, he is sucked into a Phantom Ruby portal, presumably finding himself stuck in Egg Reverie Zone. This is the original Phantom Ruby's last appearance, leaving its fate ambiguous.

Meanwhile, back in the future, the modern Dr. Eggman has yet to give up on his Phantom Ruby exploits. Seeing as how he still had a weapon charged with Phantom Ruby energy, the doctor decides to put it to good use and begins another world conquering plot. By covering the entire planet with the Phantom Ruby's energy, he used what Tails calls "cognitive frictional energy" to generate extreme amounts of energy from the discrepancy between the world's original reality and the new reality overwriting it. By absorbing this resulting energy, Eggman created his ultimate weapon, the Egg Field, a mech capable of reshaping the world around it to erase all of his past failures.

Sonic manages to destroy the weapon by turning into Super Sonic, forcing Eggman to transform into "Super Eggman" by making use of his modified Phantom Ruby prototype. The doctor attempts to persuade Sonic by arguing that these fake scenarios cause harm to no one, but the hedgehog refutes this by saying that the thoughts of Earth's denizens should not be forced out of their minds, and to do that would be to inflict suffering upon the planet. Eggman also attempts to create a fake world tailored to Sonic's every whim, but he manages to see past it and defeat Robotnik, allowing things to return to normal, even if slowly due to how massive the scale of the illusions were.

Eggman, beneath the wreckage of Eggmanland, contemplates fixing his modified Phantom Ruby prototype and using it once more, but Infinite, who was briefly able to leave the Phantom Ruby during the whole event, snatches it from his hand. Initially seeking revenge, he instead accepts his fate as his body disappears once more, dropping the prototype into the lava.

Acto 8: La Reaparición de la Princesa Mágica

¡Crash!

Una gran cantidad de afilados fragmentos del cristal de una ventana son arrojados contra la lujosa alfombra roja junto a un hotel…

El poderoso brazo del monstruo no se detuvo mientras derribaba con fuerza las paredes de cristal de la tienda del segundo piso del atrio. Atravesó el suelo, agarró una mesa blanca de cafetería que había lanzado, la hizo pedazos y la arrojó hacia un punto.

¡Gruuuuummm!

El proyectil de su aterradora destrucción parecía que iba a aplastar al pobre camarero que estaba cerca de la cocina, pero…todo es detenido por una barrera psíquica azul cobalto y se hace añicos.

“¡Monstruo destroza negocios! ¡Me encargaré de ti!”

Así grita Silver, el erizo psíquico de color plateado, mientras su cuerpo brilla con una psíquica luz verde.

El monstruo que se interpone en su camino es un gigantesco golem hecho de una colección de juguetes y chatarra. En ese instante, con su delantal negro de garçon ondeando, Silver estaba a punto de usar su poder contra el monstruo, cuando ¡...!

¡Brrruuuuuuuumm!

Esta vez, una flecha de llamas rojas roza el costado de Silver y alcanza al monstruo, lanzando su enorme cuerpo por los aires.

Tras el estruendo, la criada, que descendió para proteger a Silver mientras apartaba el velo de llamas, se da la vuelta con su elegante falda de delantal de seda negra ondeando y, sin mover una ceja, le dice:

“Huye, camarero. Este no es lugar para los comunes”

…Silver, que no está nada contento que le interrumpan de repente y que le traten como si fuera un aficionado:

“Y tu eres una criada ¿verdad?...¿¡Quién leches eres!?”

“¡Soy la defensora de los débiles contra los malvados! ¡Blaze, la Princesa Mágica!”

“¿Princesa…mágica?"

Blaze se lanza hacia el monstruo, dejando atrás a Silver, quien se queda perplejo por un momento. En su prisa por seguirla, Silver no se puede resistir a protestar.

“¿Quién dice que soy débil?”

La batalla contra el monstruo era una defensa constante.

Si bien las llamas que Blaze arrojaba golpeaban al monstruo, solo lograban raspar su superficie... y los fragmentos rápidamente eran atraídos por una extraña fuerza para volver a unirse y restaurar su forma original.

"Al principio vine aquí para hacerme pasar como criada, pero no esperaba verme involucrada en una batalla de repente..."

Blaze, atrapada en su uniforme de criada que no le permitía moverse con facilidad, chasqueaba la lengua de forma involuntaria.

"A mí también me pidieron que fuera guardaespaldas en esta cafetería y me convertí en camarero esperando al monstruo, pero no esperaba que fuera tan fuerte"

Acordaba Silver, sorprendido por el inesperado enemigo.

"Por cierto, ¿por qué llevas un traje de criada? Este lugar proporciona uniformes, ¿verdad?"

“¿E- En serio? Amy me dijo que me pusiera esto ..."

Blaze se estremeció ante la inesperada observación y se sonrojó mientras se aferraba a los volantes de los hombros. Pero mientras intentaba recuperarse, se volvió hacia Silver y le dijo:

"¡No te muevas tanto delante de mí! ¡Estás estorbando y no puedo concentrar mi poder de fuego!"

“Sabes que los ataques no están surtiendo efecto, ¿verdad? Primero tenemos que encontrar el trigger de su recuperación”.

Finalmente, terminaron discutiendo en medio de la batalla. Y en ese momento, el monstruo no dejó pasar la oportunidad…

¡BAM!

El monstruo acumuló lentamente su poder, levantando ambos puños hacia arriba y lanzando un golpe con toda su fuerza hacia el techo. El impacto atravesó el techo de la cafetería, el techo del piso de arriba y llegó hasta la azotea del hotel, causando un gran colapso.

Una terrorífica cascada de escombros de gran peso cayó sobre Blaze y Silver, aumentando la cantidad mientras caían. Cuando los dos levantaron la vista y se dieron cuenta, todo parecía ser demasiado tarde…

En el siguiente instante...

Silver salta en un abrir y cerrar de ojos sobre la cabeza de Blaze, extendiendo sus brazos para desplegar una barrera psíquica para protegerla... Mientras desvía y rechaza el inminente colapso y, utilizándolo como señuelo, Blaze repele el ataque del monstruo que se abalanza sobre Silver desde el polvo, usando su propio cuerpo, mientras al mismo tiempo dispersa el polvo circundante con una explosión de llamas.

...Esta es realmente una coordinación perfecta, sin necesidad de señas ni comunicación. Mientras se recuperan de la situación de peligro inminente, finalmente ambos abren la boca.

"Mi cuerpo se movió por sí solo... No siento como si no te conociera de antes."

"... Sí."

Blaze recupera la compostura y, mirando a la criatura que se acercaba a ellos mientras se recuperaban, continuó con semblante serio:

"He cometido dos errores. El primero fue subestimar al enemigo y venir aquí sin estar completamente preparada."

Manteniendo su posición, Blaze mira directamente a los ojos de Silver y continúa.

"Camarero, ¿me das veinte segundos... por favor?"

"No hay problema, pero antes... ¿puedo preguntar cuál es el segundo?"

Después de un breve momento de vacilación, Blaze responde con determinación.

"El segundo error fue menospreciar a mis compañeros en quienes confiar, y actuar con descortesía hacia ellos. Eso..."

Antes de que Blaze pudiera terminar sus palabras de disculpa, Silver la interrumpe y acepta su petición.

"Está bien, Blaze, el sentimiento es mutuo. Sin problemas, aguantaré veinte segundos, ¡o incluso doscientos años si es necesario!... Ah, ¿puedo añadir una cosa también?"

"...¿?"

"Mi nombre es Silver."

En el siguiente instante, Blaze es envuelta rápidamente por un fuego abrasador. Cerrando los ojos para concentrarse mentalmente... Silver intuye que está intentando controlar un gran poder.

“Te lo agradezco, Silver…”

Blaze está dispuesta a hacer algo que cambiará la situación, incluso arriesgando a exponerse sin protección. Esta anticipación y confianza inspiraron a Silver.

“¡Vamos a hacerlo!”

Silver despliega toda su energía psíquica en todas las direcciones. Sostiene los escombros de todo el piso y obstaculiza la regeneración del monstruo, al mismo tiempo que realiza ataques psíquicos contra todo lo que se le atraviesa, para proteger a Blaze.

Sin embargo, una batalla prolongada defendiendo un objeto inmóvil es una desventaja. Tienes que aguantar y soportar todos los ataques que te llegan sin esquivarlos, por lo que al final acabas inquieto.

El plan de Silver era resistir sin depender tanto de movimientos, pero el monstruo parece haberse dado cuenta y aumenta aún más sus ataques.

Veinte segundos pueden ser una eternidad. ¿Cuánto podrá aguantar...? Justo cuando Silver estaba a punto de caer de rodillas debido a la cantidad de proyectiles que estaban empezando a acumularse...

DUUUUM

Mientras una fuerte ráfaga de llamas se extiende, Blaze finalmente libera su poder en un fuego tan cegador que ni siquiera puede abrir los ojos...El monstruo salió volando por los aires. Todo está listo.

“¡Sol Místico, responde al poder de mis llamas…!”

Las siete joyas en el bolso de Blaze aumentan su luz una por una con las llamas, mientras su resplandor aumenta con el fuego.

En el momento en que el monstruo se preparaba para un desesperado ataque a toda potencia, Blaze concentró todas sus fuerzas... y declaró la ejecución de su inmenso poder.

"¡Princesa Mágica Blaze! ¡Modo Burning Unlimited!"

Envuelta en varias capas de llamas de siete colores, Blaze se convirtió en una columna ardiente. En un instante, enormes alas de fuego se desplegaron en su espalda, pero enseguida se condensaron en sus brazos extendidos... ¡Convirtiéndose en un tremendo torrente de fuego que se lanzó hacia el monstruo!

"¡Haaaah!"

"¡Haaah!"

El monstruo intenta resistirse con una postura defensiva, pero Silver apoyó a Blaze desde atrás, aumentando aún más su poder, y el monstruo no pudo aguantar más.

Todo lo que formaba el monstruo salta por los aires, y el cuerpo de energía de su centro provoca una enorme explosión.

¡BOOOM!

Una estruendosa explosión resonó hasta las lejanas islas del cielo. Finalmente, el monstruo desapareció por completo.

“Chao, Chao, Chaoooo!"

Después de que el polvo de la explosión finalmente se había disipado... Entre los restos de la explosión fosilizada, había un pequeño chao de luz llorando débilmente.

La verdadera identidad del monstruo eran los pensamientos residuales del chao.

Mientras Blaze y Silver observaban, el chao de luz acabó encontrando un agujero en el suelo destrozado y entró alegremente en él, como si se hubiera dado cuenta de algo.

“¿?”

“¿Qué es esto?"

Ambos siguieron al chao y encontraron, para su sorpresa, en el sótano de la cafetería…Debajo del suelo había un jardín verde con agua clara y abundante vegetación.

El pequeño chao luminoso se adentró y miró a su alrededor, y luego desapareció palideciendo su luz, con una sonrisa de satisfacción en el rostro. Los dos lo comprendieron entonces.

“Cuando esta cafetería se construyó, bloquearon el hogar de los chao…”

“Esa criatura era el cúmulo de resentimiento de esos chao que querían volver a casa”.

Ahora que ambos tienen una idea clara de lo sucedido, se sentían satisfechos con la situación, pero... suspiran por la devastación a su alrededor. La zona está completamente destruida y no queda rastro del interior maravilloso.

"Bueno, hemos resuelto el caso de una vez por todas... Aunque también hemos tenido que limpiar el desastre ya que hemos destruido espectacularmente la tienda, ¿verdad?"

Al tono pensativo de Silver, Blaze respondió con una sonrisa irónica y con un porte tranquilo.

“De acuerdo. ¿Y qué hacemos?".

Cuando levantaron la vista hacia la luz que entraba desde arriba, vieron a través del agujero del techo derruido un cielo azul deslumbrante, bellamente recortado como un cuadro Llenaba la estancia de una luz clara, como si reflejara la claridad de sus corazones.

Un mes después...

Tras importantes reformas, la tienda, que conectaba aquel misterioso jardín Chao como una zona de cafetería abierta, se renueva como Chao Garden, una cafetería al estilo Maid que combina prestigio y calidez amigable con los chao, y que se ha ganado una gran reputación.

Mientras Silver y Blaze están ocupados ayudando a reconstruir el local, aparecen unos visitantes inesperados. A primera vista, los dos se quedan tiesos sin ni siquiera poder atender a los clientes…

“¡S-Sonic! ¿¡Eres Sonic!?”

“¿Por qué vais vestidos así?...¡Espera, nosotros también! ¿Por qué estamos vestidos así? ¿¡ Pero qué está pasando!?”

En el momento en que vieron a Sonic, Blaze y Silver recuperaron sus recuerdos originales.

“¡Hey, chicos!”

Sonic también estaba sorprendido, pero Tails se dio cuenta de que Sonic y los demás tenían Esmeraldas del Caos…Esos adornos mutados, la joya en la cola de Blaze y el colgante de Silver brillaron débilmente al mismo tiempo. Mientras Tails reflexionaba sobre ello, los dos se pusieron a repasar sus recuerdos de antes y después del cambio.

"Fui atrapada por esa luz en el momento en que llegué a este lado del mundo siguiendo la guía de las Esmeraldas Sol."

dijo Blaze, acariciando las siete joyas de su bolso. Y se pregunta por Marine, que le ha estado siguiendo.

“Yo estaba luchando en la base de Eggman justo antes. Intentaba evitar que se activara algún tipo de arma...."

La cabeza de Silver está en sus manos ya que no puede recordar correctamente.

"¿Y cómo es que vosotros dos recuperasteis la memoria?”

Tails sacó su característico "detector de energía" y explicó.

PIP PIP PIP

“Bueno, la joya de la cola de Blaze y el colgante de Silver son Esmeraldas del Caos después de todo. Igual que los nuestros”

Tails explica que definitivamente son Esmeraldas del Caos, basándose en la longitud de onda de la energía que emiten, y que definitivamente brillaron cuando recuperaron sus recuerdos.

“En lo que respecta al fenómeno, las Esmeraldas del Caos tienen el poder de resistir esta mutación en cualquier caso. Y aunque una solo no sea suficiente, si hay varias cerca, y alguno tenga los recuerdos originales…Puede que ese sea la condición para la reactivación”.

“Buen punto. ¡Gran trabajo, Tails!”

Elogió Sonic al sonrojado Tails, mientras Blaze y Silver también asentían.

"He oído que en momentos de crisis, las Esmeraldas pueden ser atraídas entre sí por un misterioso poder. Esta mía fue traída hasta aquí gracias a lo que le dijeron las estrellas a Amy, pero... tal vez también sea una de esas fuerzas", dijo Blaze.

“En efecto. Reunir cuatro de ellos de forma tan fácil…Me recuerda a cuando ves por primera vez una estrella nueva, ya sabes que ahí está...pero, ¿espera un momento? ¿No es extraño? Si ese es el caso, ¿cómo es que Sonic y Tails, que solo tienen uno cada uno, están a salvo?", cuestionó Silver.

La mirada de los tres se centró en Tails ante esa pregunta obvia.

"Es que... en el momento del cambio, Sonic y yo estábamos juntos, cada uno sosteniendo una Esmeralda del Caos. Así que supongo que desde el principio no funcionó del todo bien... o eso creo. Lo siento, no estoy seguro..."

Tails comenzó a dudar, perdiendo confianza en sus propias suposiciones, pero Sonic

Tails está cada vez menos seguro a medida que sigue haciendo inferencia tras inferencia, pero Sonic sonrió ampliamente y asumió la responsabilidad

“El caso es que yo estoy a salvo gracias a Tails y lo mismo al revés, ¿verdad? Como siempre ¿no?".

Blaze y Silver también asienten mientras miran a Tails, que está desconcertado, pero con una expresión muy avergonzada en la cara.

“Sí, en este momento, sería mejor avanzar con una interpretación más positiva. Después de todo, lo más importante es... “

“¡Significa que sabemos cómo devolver a la normalidad a nuestros compañeros!”

"¡Yes, eso es!”

“¡Sí!"

Finalmente volviendo al ritmo de las cosas, Tails comenzó a proponer un plan de acción a sus camaradas con entusiasmo.

"Les daré a Blaze y Silver también un dispositivo sensor. Con esto, nos dividiremos y encontraremos a los demás que tienen las Esmeraldas del Caos ¡y los devolveremos a la normalidad! Y, finalmente, reuniremos las siete Esmeraldas del Caos. Estoy seguro de que serán nuestra carta ganadora".

"Entendido. Estoy de acuerdo con tu plan. Podemos hablar de los detalles más tarde".

“De acuerdo. las Esmeraldas Sol también sugieren que deberíamos hacer eso”

Asiente Blaze mientras toca las Esmeraldas Sol, que emiten un pálido resplandor de llamas.

"Esto se está poniendo interesante", dijo Sonic poniéndose de pie con su tono característico. Los tres se prepararon para marcharse, con determinación en sus rostros.

"Eggman es el elegido. No sé qué has hecho, ¡pero sin duda vamos a por ti!"

Un paso adelante, Sonic y los demás avanzaron, con una nueva esperanza en sus manos, listos para enfrentar el desafío que les esperaba.

The monster that stands in the way is a giant golem that looks up at you and is made of a collection of toys and junk. The moment when Silver, his black garcon apron flapping in the air, tried to wield his "power" towards the monster...!

"Run, waiter. This is no place for ordinary people."

...Silver is not amused by being suddenly interrupted and treated like an amateur.

"You're a maid, aren't you? What on earth are you!" "The one who protects the weak from evil monsters... is the Magic Princess Blaze!"

"Magic, Koujo...?"

Blaze jumps towards the monster, leaving behind Silver, who becomes stunned for a moment. Silver couldn't resist protesting as he hurriedly chased after him.

“Who is the weak one?”

The fight against monsters is only a defensive battle.

The flame wielded by Blaze does indeed hit the monster, but it only scrapes the surface of the monster's body...Then, the fragments are immediately pulled together by a mysterious force, coalescing and returning to their original state. It is.

"First of all, I came here with the intention of doing an undercover investigation as a maid, but I didn't expect to be suddenly involved in a battle..."

Blaze, who can't move as much as she wants in her maid uniform, can't help but click her tongue.

Silver agrees that he is an unexpectedly strong enemy.

Blaze wears multiple layers of flame in seven colors and transforms into a pillar of scorching heat. For a moment, huge wings of flame spread across her back, but they immediately dispersed and condensed into her outstretched arms...! It becomes a tremendous torrent of flame and pours out towards the monster.

"Haaaaaa!" "Haaaaaa!"

The monster also tries to resist by taking a defensive stance, but Silver supports Blaze from behind as he is pushed by the recoil of the flames, increasing its power, and he can no longer withstand it.

Everything that formed the monster was blown away, and the energy body at its center caused a huge explosion.

A huge roaring explosion that could be heard all the way to an island in the sky. The monster finally disappeared.

The two of them, who have come to understand the circumstances of the incident, look relieved, but sigh at the devastation surrounding them. The area has been completely destroyed, and there is no trace of that wonderful interior.

"Well, the incident has been resolved for the time being...but the store was destroyed in a spectacular manner, so we have to clean it up."

Blaze responded in a calm manner while smiling bitterly at Silver's suggestive tone.

Why people are excited over Princess Elise’s (brief) return

Short answer: the new design/art style that Sonic Channel gave her looks nice and she’s being treated with as much dignity as the rest of the Sonic cast for the first time since Sonic 06′s release nearly 17 years ago

Long answer:

Every year, Sonic Channel (the official Japanese website for Sonic the Hedgehog) puts out character illustrations for each month. Sometimes it’s just art of the character posing, sometimes they’re actually doing something (Sonic celebrating his birthday, Amy walking in the rain, Cream going trick-or-treating, etc.). For 2023, Sonic Channel is posting a specific themed series of artwork called “Isekai Ogiri” that depicts two characters in silly, non-canon scenarios; part of the appeal of these illustrations is that one of the two characters in each artwork is voted for by fans. So far we’ve seen Gadget (AKA Buddy AKA the custom character from Sonic Forces) confessing his love to an Egg Pawn in a scene straight out of a slice-of-life anime, Shadow and Infinite as rival idol musicians, a cutely-dressed Blaze visiting fortune teller Amy, Tikal and Chaos running their own pizza place, and most recently as of this post, Silver the figure-skating coach and his student Elise. (I’m linking back to the original SC pages b/c they put out a message on their official Twitter urging people to link back to the original SC pages/tweets, otherwise they might be inclined to stop making this art; if you want to understand the little stories that come with each illustration, I’m afraid you’ll have to put up with janky Google Translate translations.)

So, yeah, Princess Elise of notorious Sonic 06 infamy, the one video game journalists always seem eager to remind you kissed a dead anthropomorphic hedgehog, recently appeared in one of these illustrations. And people lost their minds, but this time, with excitement.

But if Princess Elise was/is so despised, why do people seem genuinely excited to see her now?

Well there’s 2 reasons for that: 1) the way in which she was drawn, and 2) the fact that she was even a contender to appear in this art series in the first place

1) Human characters appearing in the Sonic series has always been a source of discourse among fans. Some, like myself, enjoy seeing humans coexist alongside a cast of furries, robots, and other assorted beings; others believe there shouldn’t be any humans (except Eggman) in Sonic at all. They’ve been variously depicted as realistic people (Sonic 06) and with more cartoonish Pixar-esque proportions (Sonic Unleashed). From my perspective, what seemed to make people dislike Elise’s original design was that in addition to looking out-of-place next to the cartoony Sonic (people often say that she looks like she belongs in Final Fantasy), her facial expressions were quite bland and difficult to read. While I would argue that Sonic and his friends also had very little facial expression in 06, it’s much easier to notice with Elise (and to a lesser degree, 06 Eggman) due to her more realistic face. It evokes a feeling in some people known as the Uncanny Valley. In the Isekai Ogiri’s April illustration, Elise is depicted in a new style that leans more towards cartoony; some have compared it to Puyo Puyo, others have said she resembles the humans from Balan Wonderworld. Either way, most fans, at least those on Twitter and Tumblr, have praised Elise’s new “look” because her new proportions (large head and hands, big eyes that are easier to read) make her more closely fit in with other Sonic characters. She feels less like a Final Fantasy character and more like a Sonic character.

(With that said, not everyone was automatically bothered by Elise’s realistic 06 design because human beings do not perceive everything in the exact same way b/c art is subjective)

2) Part of how Elise even wound up in this illustration is not just because people wanted to see her again, but because Sonic Team themselves decided to treat her with dignity by making her an option to vote for. And she was up against Merlina from Sonic and the Black Knight, a well-regarded character among fans and one of the few female villains in the entire series!! The poll they were in for the April pic was very close!!

During the late 2000s following Sonic 06′s release, Silver had his fanbase, but a lot of people still viewed him as annoying, and it took several years of game reappearances for him to become a less divisive character (my source: I’ve been a Sonic fan with internet access since ~2003, the way he’s depicted in the Sonic Paradox shorts is actually what a lot of people thought of him at the time). Also, he was still an anthropomorphic Sonic animal, so naturally people would be quicker to accept him as part of the cast.

But Elise? The human? While I doubt she was originally intended to be a recurring character, even if 06 WAS supposed to be a reboot, her portrayal in that game was so widely despised by critics and fans alike that she was thereafter relegated to rare cameos (like being on a collectible card in Sonic Rivals 2) and jokes at her expense (in LEGO Dimensions, when Sonic interacts with Lumpy Space Princess, he says, “Last time I met a princess, I...we...you know, I don't quite remember, never mind!” in a hurried and embarrassed voice). Elise is hardly the only notoriously-disliked Sonic character, but because she only appeared in one game in a non-playable role (I’m not counting the stages where Sonic carries her), her biggest positive accomplishments--unlocking her cell herself instead of waiting for Sonic to save her, jumping from Eggman’s ship with zero hesitation, and reviving Sonic--are often overshadowed by the moments where she just stands there praying, gets kidnapped, and kisses a dead hedgehog just in case you forgot for the 17th year in a row, leading people to view her as an inherently bad character. Because she is also a girl, and video games were and still are a largely male-dominated culture loaded with toxic masculinity, it’d be ignorant to say the vitriol towards Elise wasn’t charged with sexism and misogyny on some level.

But as an aspiring writer and someone who hates wasted character potential, my personal opinion is that characters, SPECIFICALLY in ongoing franchises like Sonic, are not inherently bad, it’s the ways in which they’re USED that can make them LOOK good or bad, and they don’t deserve to be locked away forever all because of one bad interpretation. But unlike Silver who has been in multiple games since 06 (or even Mephiles, who was added to the Sonic Forces mobile game last year as an unlockable character), Elise has only ever had 06. Thus, people only have that one interpretation of her to go off of, because not everyone obsessively rewrites her in their headcanons or hunts down fan fiction where Elise is characterized with actual effort.

And like I said, I don’t think Elise was created with longevity in mind, but it’s specifically because critics and fans alike continue to beat this dead horse that you have people like me saying “What if she came back tho”

Compare the hate Elise gets to the Deadly Six, characters whose debut game was not seen as quite a colossal failure as 06 but still had a story that was almost universally panned, particularly in regards to its character writing. While the Deadly Six (or just Zavok) have yet to appear in a game written by Ian Flynn, they’ve been recurring characters in the IDW Sonic comics and, while still pretty universally disliked, have been regarded by some fans as being tolerable in the comics due to how Flynn utilizes them there. (I wrote a whole other post speculating about the Deadly Six’s characterization in IDW if you feel like reading that lol.) In this sense, the current Sonic writers are genuinely trying to make even the most undesired characters palatable for the audience. I think it’ll be a long while before most people fully warm up to the D6, but the intent is there.

Meaning that the same could hypothetically be done for Elise, if this illustration is any indication that SEGA is beginning to wholeheartedly embrace their past, even the ugly parts

I’m not expecting anything huge from this, and I don’t expect her to suddenly become a major recurring character, because this illustration is nothing more than Sonic Team testing the waters to see how people react to them unironically including Elise in non-canon material. But look at all the fan art people are drawing of Elise in her skating outfit. Look at how fans are reacting. If, sometime after this, Elise were to appear in even a minor role in the IDW comics, in this new art style, with Ian Flynn, Evan Stanley, or even a guest writer like Daniel Barnes at the helm, I would welcome it with open arms, because I trust them to handle Princess Elise’s character with genuine investment and care.

(But until then I have my own ideas that I’m a bit hesitant to share for.....reasons~)

Infinite: (Not) Weak (character overview)

In this post I'm tackling the short-lived antagonist of Sonic Forces, Infinite, and some of the characteristics that make him a, surprisingly, thematically resonant and just overall good villain.

Overcorrection

To talk about his character, it’s pretty important to talk about the events that led to him adopting the “Infinite” persona. Before the events of the game, he was the ruthless leader of the Jackal Squad, calling himself “The Ultimate Mercenary.” Following an encounter with Dr. Eggman, Infinite accidentally revealed his deep-seated wishes to “change the world” and plunge it into anarchy and destruction, seeing as he’d grown tired of the world as it was. The doctor, taking advantage of this, hires the jackal as the new general of his army.

Several months before Eggman took over the world, the Jackal Squad was assigned to guard Eggman’s Mystic Jungle Facility, where the Phantom Ruby had undergone analysis. Despite their skill, they were all completely wiped out by Shadow the Hedgehog. By request of Eggman, their captain decides to confront the Ultimate Life Form by himself, but is beaten to the ground and overwhelmed with fear. Never before had he felt so powerless, so incapable, so weak.

To Shadow, it was just another grunt in his way, but to his opponent, it was an unbearable amount of humiliation. Vowing to never feel “weak” again, the jackal discarded his old self and was born anew as Infinite. Now, with the help of Eggman, he had the power to make all yield to his will, power unmatched even by the likes of Sonic himself (or so he believed).

Style

As part of his new identity, Infinite also adopted a much colder, intimidating demeanor, showing no hesitation when taking the lives of others. He revels in the fear of his opponents, perhaps to reassure himself that he is now above such behavior. While Shadow strives to achieve perfection in all he does, Infinite is instead content with having his own flair, his “authenticity,” believing it to be superior, which is actually sort of one of his healthier traits.

Before anyone knew it, a live music club was there. The performers, let alone the audience, don’t remember much about why they were here. Still, everyone enjoyed this moment… except for one. “Don’t get in my way. You’re holding me down.” After the concert, Shadow coldly declares this to his partner. The poor attitude towards the audience, the shoddy performance… a stage show with him was far from the perfection Shadow was looking for. But when questioned, Infinite laughed boastfully and slowly closed in on Shadow. “It’s good enough for a runt who can’t understand authenticity. I have no interest in following your smugness in playing at perfection.” “So, you admit you’re a fake. Surely you understand that.” (Translation by @browniestash!)

Infinite deems friendships, as with many other things, a sign of weakness. Even though he led his own squad, one that valued him as a leader and comrade, the jackal did not feel the same way, even disregarding their qualms when allying himself with the Eggman Empire. Infinite, at the very least following his shift in identities, sees friends as naught but fleeting illusions, stating that your own strength is all one can rely on.

Obsession with power

Infinite, as a result of his encounter with Shadow, seems to be quite insecure about his strength, being obsessed with attaining more and more of it to the point of letting his own body be modified with the Phantom Ruby prototype. Referring to his past self as pathetic and unsightly for losing that fight, Infinite takes every opportunity to prove he is no longer that weakling. Even when facing unequivocal defeat, the jackal will refuse to retreat and insist on continuing to fight.

When everything you know has come and gone, (You are at your lowest, I am rising higher) Only scars remain of who I was (What I find in the ashes, you lose in the fire!) When there's no one left to carry on, (This is an illusion, open up your eyes and...) This pain (persists), I can't (resist), But that's what it takes to be Infinite

After Sonic Forces, Infinite actually seems to reevaluate his need for power and his reliance on the Phantom Ruby prototype. After Dr. Eggman’s Otherworldification plan fails, Infinite is briefly freed from inside the Phantom Ruby and snatches the last remaining Phantom Ruby prototype from the doctor’s hands. As he is about to put it on again, the jackal is suddenly filled with doubt and hesitation. He ponders whether or not he really wants to resort to using that again. But before he can make a decision, his body vanishes with the light as the world returns to normal, which he seems to thinks was for the best.

“Heheheh, it really is a modified Phantom Ruby prototype… Just as I thought! If I put this on, I’ll have power once again!” Infinite’s shoulders were shaking with joy as he placed his hand on his chest where he had once worn the Phantom Ruby… but suddenly a cold wind blew through his heart. (I’m resorting to this again…?) His heart’s craving for power and his pride, which was deep within him, causes doubt in Infinite. He hesitated for only a few seconds before deciding whether or not to put “this” on his chest, and that’s when it happened. “…Ah?!” The elimination of otherworldification occurs in Infinite, and his body disappears with the light. The core in his hand slips through and falls into the glimmering lava… with a sizzling sound, it is lost to the world forever. Infinite was wide-eyed and stunned, but… “H-Heheh, haha…” He smiled wryly, lightly shaking his head, as if to say that it was for the best, and then vanished with the light. The world has been saved once again by a strange fate that no one had any way of knowing. The wind was merely blowing in the sky. (Translation by @browniestash!)

Conclusion

To end on a positive note, Infinite is not definitely dead! He's a character I really like from the one game he got to shine in, and Eitaro Toyoda has expressed his desire to see him come back, so we may actually see more of him in the future.
