30 Covers, 30 Days 2022: Day 20

Ever wondered the thoughts of water? For day twenty, Other/Experimental novel Water Does Not Acquiesce by Stacy Boone takes us through the life of a water droplet. This cover was designed by Mitzi Okou.

Water Does Not Acquiesce

Mountains were first, a roar of sound. When the aftershocks settled, pockets for water pooled in a scattered disorganized arrangement. The broad story follows one body of water as it travels from its birth in the mountains and flows into community taps, often hundreds of miles away from its source. POV is from a single droplet. She reports the experience of traveling that distance — sometimes with humor, sometimes with sadness and other moments with a cringe worthy forcefulness. The journey questions: might water be in limited supply.

About the Author

Stacy lives in northern Vermont among dairy farms and corn fields. She writes mostly about water and about what humans are doing to the landscape. When she is not simply trying to negotiate 20 minutes of time to write the fleeting thoughts in her head, she manages a homestead, too many little lives and peers out the front door wondering when the UPS is going to deliver the next subscription of wine.

About the Designer

Mitzi is a UX and visual designer from Atlanta, Georgia who received her Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from Savannah College of Art and Design. She currently resides in Boston, Massachusetts where she is working as a product designer for Spotify. As an up and coming designer, she has placed in hackathons put on by companies and institutions such as IDEO, SCAD and MIT that solved for issues ranging from the wealth inequality in the music industry to federal socio-economic injustice. As a design activist, Mitzi recently organized a free and accessible virtual conference called “Where are the Black designers?” that highlighted and brought awareness to allies within the creative and tech industry about the experiences and struggles of being a black designer within the field. She hopes to use the platform to support black designers throughout their career and help them create their own narrative by connecting them with the established legacy of the black design community, creating a hub of resources, and establishing inclusive spaces within the tech and creative field.

i wanted to know the exact line when koito suggests to tsukishima that they exchange menko (chapter 249).

the sentence: そんなに心配ならお互いのメンコを交換して肌身離さず気を張っておこう (sonna ni shinpai nara otagai no menko wo koukan shite hadamihanasazu ki wo hatte okou)

breakdown: そんなに心配なら if you're that worried お互いのメンコ each other's menko を交換して exchanging, swapping 肌身離さず carrying close to one's person, carrying at all times, implication of keeping it next to the skin 気を張っておこう let's steel ourselves.

my translation: "If you're that worried, then let's steel ourselves by exchanging menko and always keeping them close to us."

EH scans translation: "If you're that worried about it, then we can exchange our own menko and always keep them with us." (that's perfect, but i liked the part about steeling themselves.)

VIZ translation: "If you're worried, how about trading menko pieces for mutual encouragement?" (as usual leaving out a lot of detail for no reason, but i do like "mutual encouragement.")

analysis of what koito means: he wants to communicate something to tsukishima like, "we both feel weird about tsurumi now, but what's important is that we are closer and understand each other better than ever, so as long as we remember that we have each other, we can get through this." and he also wants tsukishima to look at the cool menko he made of himself and be impressed.

(and then tsukishima's reply is just, "I haven't made one, though.")

Angel's voice chapter 4 | The angel's serenity

They had 3 weeks to prepare for the competition.

In those 3 weeks, venti has been helping (Y/n) get over her stage fright as well as helping her get more confident.

They exchanged numbers and every after their rehearsal, venti would text (Y/n) a small "Great job today! o((^▽^))o " or "You're voice is as beautiful as ever! Keep it up!!! (/≧▽≦)/~" (Y/n) would feel her heart flutter at his adorable messages and would always find herself smiling every time she receives one.

Venti would make (Y/n) sing in front of his friends so that she'd get used to people watching her. Venti was very patient with her and made sure not to trigger anything.

There were times when Y/n would start feeling insecure but Venti was always there to comfort her by playing music. Venti helped her grow and soon, her confidence bloomed, like a flower in spring as he guided her, with a gentle touch, and a listening ear. He helped her find her voice. Their bond grows stronger with each passing day.

And after 3 weeks of hard practice, they were ready.

(Y/n) and Venti were both backstage, waiting for their turn to perform. Y/n took a peek from the curtains and saw the crowd of people and immediately started to get nervous. She closed the curtains back and took a deep sigh trying to calm herself.

Venti took notice of her behavior and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Don't worry, You'll do great! Kazuha's sitting on the front row so don't worry!" his small words of encouragement made her heart flutter as she smiled thankfully at him.

The two were called to the stage as they both walked in front and once again, (Y/n) felt her breath hitch, she could feel it, her anxiety slowly crawling back to her as her hands shook. Kazuha was looking at her with eyes full of worry.

"(Y/n)" She heard Venti softly call her name, she looked at him who was giving her a determined smile. No words were needed to be exchanged, his smile was enough to calm her nerves.

And so the music played as she finally sang in front of a crowd, facing her fears

Their work paid off and they stood together in the spotlight. Venti could see it, her glowing smile as her eyes shone with happiness and her laughter echoed like a sweet refrain as if the angel finally broke from her chains and spread her wings. And in her freedom, he found his delight. And he was proud, to see her in her place.

They won 1st place.

Once the two got down, they were greeted by Venti's friends and they congratulated them. Kazuha sprinted towards (Y/n) and gave her a tight hug.

They all went out to celebrate Kazuha was happy to see his cousin like this, she was smiling and laughing with the group as he watched them play games at the arcade they went to with Venti by his side who was also watching (Y/n) interact so happily.

"Thank you venti, and I accept," Kazuha said as he focused on (Y/n) who was laughing as she watched Wanderer and Heizou fight over a cat plush. "huh?" venti tilted his head in confusion. "You like her don't you?" Kazuha asks teasingly. Venti blushed in embarrassment since Kazuha figured him out already. Kazuha chuckled at his reaction and patted his back "Ask her out, she'll agree I promise" and with that, he also joined the group leaving Venti with his thoughts.

The sun was setting now. Kazuha managed to convince the others to buy some food with him leaving (Y/n) and Venti alone in the quiet park.

"Thank you venti" (Y/n) suddenly said facing Venti who stood beside her and smiled at him. Venti became a bit shy at her words. "I-it's no problem! But uh.. would you maybe wanna go on a date with me as a thank you..?" He muttered with his cheeks tinted pink, he only gets this shy around her.

(Y/n) chuckled at him with her cheeks also turning pink. "Yes, I'd love to"

….

"Hey venti, remember that love song I sang?'

"Yeah, what about it?"

"It was your music sheet from 4 years ago and I added lyrics to it, It was meant to be for you"

"e-eehhhhh?!?!" (o/////o " )
