Today is my birthday. Thanks to everyone who wished me a happy birthday and remembered me. In fact, Kyo also sent me a message..... wishing me a happy birthday! I've been sitting on this meme since we got introduced to Yura Takumi. I wanted to watch the episodes based around him before posting just in case I was wrong, but I wasn't. They're really having Shimazaki Nobunaga play Ageha again.

Opus Colors Episode 11 Review: The Scribbler's Identity

After seven episodes since the reveal of a Scribbler, Kazuya finally learns who the person is: Kyo! I knew it! I just didn’t like the fact that the characters took too long to figure it out. Then again, I guess it was hard because Kyo stopped being an Artist after the Yamanashi couple’s death and became a Grader instead, so it was hard to suspect someone who stopped doing art.

The build-up of the reveal was thoroughly paced in this episode. The end of the previous episode had it look like as if Iori was the Scribbler, but with the way this episode used the flashback with Iori and Kyo finally gave the hints that it was Kyo. The Scribble was influenced off of the Yamanashi style—Kyo used to learn Perception Art under the Yamanashis. The base Iori used in his first year art was made from Kyo—Kyo used to be an Artist. It all clicked together for Kazuya now.

The Perception Art that was shown in this episode was epic. I still stand by my belief of Iori having the best Perception Art sequences. I just love how all artists have their own style. Iori’s style is clearly oriental/Japanese-style compared to the others. I think the writers agree with me regarding Iori since he got a second Perception Art sequence dedicated to him; he’s clearly their favorite and it shows.

However, there is still one more question that has yet to be answered: Why is Kyo so guilt-ridden? It was revealed that the car the Yamanashi couple were in did not catch on fire, so why did they die in a fire? Was it due to Kyo being stuck inside a car? We haven’t gotten to that part yet. However, whatever did happen back then caused Kyo to be so guilt-ridden that he decided to close himself off to Kazuya and Jun. He wanted to be a Grader to protect Kazuya and Jun, but the guilt seemed to have eaten him up as he got older to the point that he decided to avoid them. Will next week’s episode be the last? I just hope everything gets resolved by then.

I just hope everyone hugs, kiss and make up. Kazuya, Kyo and Jun deserve happiness. Jun, especially, needs that happiness as he’s the one who has been keeping the bond between them afloat the most. He’s truly the mom friend and he deserves the very best!

Given that most anime seasons last at least twelve episodes, it honestly felt overdue for Opus Colors to get to the meat of the drama that stemmed from Kazuya’s parent’s deaths. Which isn’t to say the Scribbler mystery was not a bad through-line to get us there. But it nearly seemed unimportant at times when it got put aside to develop the cast and their respective arcs.

There’s a strong theme about grief and dealing with death that I can commend this show for. Which is more that can be said for it on the whole.

Perception Art

A new field of painting created by an "artist" in charge of actual work and a "grader" in charge of production. Basically, a pairing system is used. It is a digital art form that directly affects the senses of sight, sound, smell, and touch, immersing the viewer completely in the world of the work. Although it has only been around for a little over 10 years, it is now widely used for commercial purposes such as advertisements, and like traditional paintings, it is sometimes valued highly as a work of art.

In the past, some people considered it dangerous because it deviated from the influence that works of art should have on people, but now it is recognized as safe because a qualification system has been introduced and the creators and their works are carefully controlled.

Artist The person in charge of the actual work, who actually paints the work in the digital space using special painting materials. The grader determines the concept and theme, but the artist's sensitivity, taste, and ability play a major role in developing the image and forming the work.

Grader A person in charge of production who receives a client's request, determines the concept and theme of the work, and places an order with an appropriate artist. Since the grader is in charge of judging the final product, the grader is usually the one who takes the initiative.

Devices for Perception Art

Support Space A digital space that corresponds to a "canvas" in perception art. It used to be available only in a limited area, but now it is available over a much wider area.

Goggles A gadget to visualize the support space. To prevent adverse effects on the body, such as space sickness, it is forbidden to leave the goggles on.

Gloves A device that corresponds to a "pen," "brush," or "paint" in perception art. When worn, it allows the wearer to draw in the support space. Mainly used by artists.

Frame A special frame that holds the perception art drawn on the support space. By placing it in the frame, the perception art can be viewed without goggles. Once the artwork is placed in the frame, it cannot be taken out, and it is impossible to copy or replace the artwork.

Generals The generals are advisors and chaperones for the Perception Art Department students of Naga Akane High School. The most suitable candidates are selected every year from among the students enrolled in the affiliated art school.

The Colorful Dead Picture Frame The empty frame installed in the entrance hall of the Naga Akane Museum of Art. It was originally supposed to be decorated with perception art painted by Mr. and Mrs. Tsukimiri……
