“I-” Buck scoffs, throwing his hands up, then brings one to rub at his chin while the other rests on his hip. He forces himself to look at Eddie who is worrying with a loose thread on his shirt sleeve. “Eds, you can’t- you don’t mean that.”
Buck's accusation is born out of self-preservation more than anything. Because, of all the things - spoken and unspoken - that have passed between them through the years, he has never wanted his best friend to mean anything more than the words he just uttered.
Eddie folds his arms across his chest, widening his stance. Nothing drastic, just the smallest amount. Enough to convey he’s serious and not backing down.
"Why not, Buck? Huh? Why can't I mean that?"
Buck starts to protest, to release a litany of reasons, but no sound comes out. His jaw snaps shut when Eddie seemingly drops his defenses, closing the gap between them in two large strides.
Eddie rests one hand on each of Buck's shoulders, letting his thumb settle in the divot of Buck's collarbone. One of the many pieces of Buck that was never good enough for anyone else, but seems to have been custom made for Eddie Diaz.
Eddie's fingertips skim over Buck's hoodie - the burnt orange one Eddie always says looks good on him - down his biceps, around his elbows, over his forearms until their hands are joining. Brown eyes, the color of soil and earth, meet Buck's. They're searching and pleading, looking for an answer Buck desperately wants to give.
"Buck." Eddie's gaze flicks to his mouth for just a second, making him feel like he's burning. And he would, he wants to, but not yet. Not until he's sure what Eddie's asking of him. "Evan."
Eddie rests their foreheads together, bringing them even closer. "Haven't we done this long enough? Haven't we sacrificed and said 'no, not yet' too many times? I don't-" He forcefully exhales between them, a frustrated sigh that tapers off to quiet, wounded thing. "I've missed so many chances. Told myself that it wasn't our time yet and I could wait a little longer. Until the next one. But, I can't. I can't do it anymore. Can't lose you."
Tears gather at the corner of Buck's eyes and he has to swallow back the tremor that wants to accompany every word.
"Okay," he manages. "Say it again."
Eddie’s tongue darts out, swiping across his lips that instantly curve into a small smile. The one Buck pretends is just for him. “Marry me. Be my husband. Plea-”
Buck cuts him off. “Yes, I’ll be your husband,” he whispers, then huffs out a small laugh. "Maybe kiss me first?"
And Eddie does. He brings their lips together, slow and cautious but so, so certain. Like he's never been more sure of anything, like kissing Buck is the easiest decision of his life.
It strikes Buck that this is the last first kiss he'll ever have. That they'll ever have. How it's a precious gift they've been permitted to share with each other.
With every passing year, he became more and more convinced they were two parallel lines, meant to travel together but never touch. Yet here they are, crossing and twisting and intertwining. Beginning to weave the next chapter of their story.
Eddie threads his fingers through the short hair at the nape of Buck's neck, sighing into their kiss, and Buck knows he has never meant anything more.

"Hmm," Hyunjin hummed in contemplation to something you had said, "You know, I always liked your company more then Hyun-jee's. Don't tell her though." He had mischievous look in his eyes and a smirk on his lips, eliciting a laugh from within you and bringing back a memory you had forgotten.
You were still slightly awed by the fact that the Hwang Hyun-jee invited you to spend summer with her. At a ski lodge. A fricking ski lodge! The shocking revelation that you could be considered cool enough to hang out with her and her brother were the thoughts in your head as you stared at the copy of Emma in your hands, pretending to read the text.
Beside you, you could hear the steady scratching of pencil against paper, interrupted only by the symphony of an eraser rubbing against the sheet. This little orchestra playing next to you was evidence of Hyunjin's existence, an art in itself if anyone asked you.
"You should teach me French," he asks you out of the blue, "For when if leave to go to Paris."
You look at him inquisitively. He told you that he got accepted into art school in Paris a few days ago. You did feel sad about the fact that he was going, but deep down you knew very well that practically, after this summer your interactions with Hyunjin would be few and far in between.
"You have Hyun-jee, she can teach you. If, that is, you can put up with her," you retort teasingly.
Hyunjin gives you a sly smirk, "That's exactly why I was asking you. I think I'll like your style of teaching better. And so, I want you to please, please, please teach me French."
You had no idea where this sudden newfound confidence to flirt with Hyunjin had bloomed within you but, oh well, you only live once. "Do you want me teaching you, or just me in general?"
"Ah," he said shaking his head regretfully with a smile, "Even though you have only known me for a few weeks, you already know me too well."
Butterflies ignite in your stomach, although you're pretty sure he was just playing along with you. You wonder what he's sketching, his bottom lip caught between his teeth and his eyes set in concentration. Even though you have a feeling it isn't, you sincerely hope it's you.
You don't know that your hopeful assumption was true.
A tightening in you chest starts to grow when the topic shifts to love. Earlier, talking to Hyunjin about love used to come as easy walking on your two feet. Now, it just hurts. He asked you if you were seeing someone. You promptly replied in the negative. You asked him if he was seeing someone. He reflected your answer back onto you.
But what did it really mean? You were always going to be bound in this life by that unspoken oath you made to Hyun-jee all those years ago. It wasn't even about love anymore, it was about not breaking another person's trust, a person who you held closer to your heart than most of your family.
You started thinking though. What was the point of hiding your feelings, old or not, from Hyunjin any longer? It wasn't like you could act on it, but you may as well have told him. Maybe then a huge weight from your chest would be released and you wouldn't be shackled by commitments, things you felt you owed to both of them.
"I don't think you know this but," your expression suddenly changed, "I used to have the biggest crush on you that summer."
"Used to?" At this point, Hyunjin is sitting up straight, eyeing you curiously. You roll your eyes and give him a playful slap on his arm. His expression, however, turns into one of regret. You begin to feel remorseful about telling him, paranoia settling in and molding itself into the fabric of who you were.
"That's a shame," he says quietly.
The air changes, charged with something you can't quite place. Hyunjin hols eye contact with you, unsaid words coursing through them. You never really believed in the phrase 'the eye is the window to the soul', but right now, you were terrified of whatever the hell your eyes were revealing to him right now. Hyunjin then proceeds to utter something, something so capable of infusing you with poisoned hope, that it takes your breath away.
"I think I would have loved loving you."
Time has stopped. Feelings of desperation, annihilation and most importantly, temptation, cascade in a whirlpool inside you. It had been years. This was wrong. This was the universe dangling temptation in front of you, urging you to just take a bite. Rebelliously, you wondered, what if you were selfish for one? Why were you feeling this way now?
"I think I would have loved being loved by you," you choke out. Hyunjin's hand laces through yours and gives it a little squeeze in response.
That is when it dawns on you that Hyunjin is as confined in this matter as you, if not more. Hyun-jee is his sister for God's sake; whatever guilt you felt in wanting him, he must have felt tenfold in wanting you. You know exactly what the little squeeze he gave you signifies: It will pass. If it cannot be, it will cease.
And you know it's true because you and Hyunjin can never be 'us' or 'we' as long as you were present in this reality. You wished there was a universe somewhere, a parallel reality when Hyunjin and you were considered of one breath because to breath you would need him like oxygen.
Judging by his expression, he must have been drifting in thought about that too.

✨1,000 Followers Celebration!!✨
I can't describe how much being part of this community has meant to me. The first fic I posted here was in November in the middle of some major health and life crises (which I talk about in my about me post if you'd like to know), and I honestly don't know how I would have gotten through it without all of your support and encouragement, as well as all the laughs and good times that y'all have shared with me.
It blows my mind that there are 1,000 of you here 🤯🤯🤯 I'm so grateful for all the love, it means the world to me! 🖤🙏🏼

I wanted to plan something extra special for this milestone, but y'all have been following me faster than I can write! For the 900 milestone I decided to circle back around to Numbers Game since it was the most requested fic, and I'm so happy that the bad men of the Cross Guild seem to be hitting the spot 😅

Through his haze of panic, he didn't realize he was falling.
Whether that was from the exhaustion or something else, he'll never know.
It was too late when he noticed he was blacking out, too late to notice his fall, too late to do anything about it,
too late to stop it.
The only thing that he remembers before he even touched the ground was the sound of sirens that would haunt his dreams for many years to come.

A Royal Adoption Party

Prince Wilbur has always wanted a little brother. Unfortunately that wasn't possible, he was an only child to the King. So when going on his last tour of the Kingdom before becoming the king and he meets a blonde child. The last thing he expected was to end up with a little brother after all. It jut took a lot of help to get the rest of the orphans good homes so he could have his own little brother.
So Wilbur comes up with his best plan yet, his royal coronation will double as any adoption ceremony for 37 children.
Now he's just left with the challenge of getting Tommy to agree to be a prince.
Or: Tommy's been caring for all the orphans for so long, and Wilbur offers to help. He's oblivious tot he fact that Wilbur is trying to adopt him.

Hiding in plain sight

“Thomas hurry up!” Tommy hears his social worker yell, Tommy lets out an annoyed huff as he closes the car door while swinging his backpack over his shoulder, grimacing as he feels his ribs burn with pain at his movements.
Tommy walks inside the house, hitting his shoes against the door mat, snow falling off the shoes before Tommy walks further into the house, making his way to where he can hear two voices in the living room.
“Tommy this is Phil,” Clara states, motioning for Tommy to come closer with her hand. Tommy does as she wants, walking over so that he’s stood next to the woman and looking into the blue wide eyes of the man named Phil.
Phil looks the boy over for a moment, taking in the dark purple over his right eye, followed by the now yellow bruises on the right side of his jaw, along with his split lip.

Tommy inhales sharply, chest heaving as he lifts his heavy face to meet the blurry outline of a man. And Tommy recognises him, because of course he would.
"I d-don't know what you're-"
Another sharp blow and Tommy is feeling saliva and blood dribble from the corner of his mouth. He works hard to maintain his glare.
"You've grown close"
Tommy didn't even answer. Was it true? He no longer considered them clients, so maybe this prick was right. But close? Tommy never got too close to his work...
The man reels back again and Tommy closes his eyes.
Or: Tommy is an undercover agent for the SBI, the most dangerous mafia in the state. When he gets captured, he can think only of them...

With a welcoming customer service smile, Wilbur asked: “How can I help you?”. There was a dangerous edge to his tone, a promise of blood. One that the kid noticed and accepted with a tired smile of his own. “Who do you need out of your way?”.
“Me” the kid answered simply. “I want you to kill me”. He seemed at peace.
“I don’t kill kids!” Wilbur immediately protested. It wasn’t true. While he personally never had, the same couldn’t be said for his family business as a whole. As a matter of fact, Techno had garnered quite a reputation for wiping out entire families and often hunting down any orphan kid he might have missed.
"It’s not exactly like I wanna die… but-” he made sure to lock eyes with Wilbur before finishing his sentence. His gaze was far more intense now than it had been earlier as he playfully studied Wilbur. There was a heaviness to it that didn’t belong with a fourteen-year-old. “Today is the day I die anyway”.

As it went, his eyes became more adjusted and he could start to make out what the alien looked like.
They were tall, at least compared to the aliens he was used to seeing, and he could just barely make out two bat-like wings coming from their back. They might’ve had hair on their head but he couldn’t really tell thanks to the distance and darkness between them. They had glowing spots on them and that had been what caught his attention originally. Had this been another scenario, he might’ve appreciated how pretty they were.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t another scenario and he didn’t have time to waste. He had to take advantage of the fact that they were headed to the other side of the ship so that he could run off and never be seen again. Maybe he could live his life out as a hermit in the woods! That sounded like a great idea!
(it didn’t, but it would be better than the alternative. almost anything would be better than the alternative.)
