The challenges for many musicians during COVID time has been how to connect with others and continue your work when you can’t share physical space? Johnny Chang and Keir GoGwilt faced a different concern. Beginning in February 2021, they both found themselves in greater Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand. Chang is a New Zealander who had just finished two decades living abroad; GoGwilt is an American who was spending a year in the land of the long cloud with his partner, New Zealander Celeste Oram.

At the time, the South Pacific Island nation was quarantined from the rest of the world and substantially virus-free; getting together wasn’t quite the challenge that it was in many other parts of the world. But finding fellow musicians tuned into both early and contemporary repertoire and ready to seek out the places where they meet was another matter. So, starting with an encounter in a suburban back yard, Chang and GoGwilt began playing together. Both played violin, although Chang is best known as a violist. They worked through pieces by Hildegard von Bingen and Orlando di Lasso, experimenting with and reinterpreting them until they turned into something different, and then they performed them around Auckland. With Oram joining for half the album, they recorded the music in July, 2021. 

The starting points for this repertoire are substantially different; von Bingen, who lived during the 12th century AD, was a mystic abbess who composed chants and hymns, while di Lasso, who lived during the 16th century, toggled between solemnly sacred and earthily secular fare. But by the time GoGwilt and Chang had worked through the material, they had developed a consonant sequence of long tones, arcing accents and pregnant pauses. Oram’s contributions are mainly high, held notes, which make the music seem to glow from within. Partially rooted in work meant to bring holy experience to humanity, the duo’s music has grown into something that no longer guides the listener to the divine, but retains the impulse towards transcendence. Considering the hash people seem to be making of things these days, it’s hard to imagine getting enough transcendence in one’s life, and there’s no better place to start that with this recording.

NOVARA JAZZ 2023 DIARY: FIN, EMONG,SEBI SU E GIÙ TRA VIGNE E CASTELLI

Inizia con Valentina Fin la seconda giornata del primo lungo weekend di Novara Jazz 2023. “Cohors “ è un progetto nato per la Fondazione Palazzo Te di Mantova partendo da brani rinascimentali di Monteverdi, Purcell, Gesualdo e Orlando di Lasso, rivissuti attraverso le sonorità del Jazz. Trasferimento poi a Fara novarese, presso l’Azienda Agricola “I Dof Mati” per “Emong” con Michele Bonifati alla chitarra e autore della maggior parte dei pezzi, Manuel Caliumi al sax, Federico Pierantoni al trombone, Evita Polidoro alla batteria e voce del gruppo. Nella presentazione, Michele Bonifati fa esplicito riferimento alla sua passione per gli aquiloni in grado di volare senza vento, forse un po’ come la musica di questa band, capace di volare con le proprie ali nutrendosi di tutte le influenze, non solo jazzistiche per librarsi in volo infine senza il bisogno di nessuna, ovvero di tutte, ma sapendole trasformare in un sound proprio, originale e riconoscibile. Gruppo straordinariamente affiatato tanto da essere menzionato tra le più significative band di Nuova Generazione Jazz 2023. Oggi è giorno di scampagnate, come vuole la tradizione di Novara Jazz, sempre alla ricerca di luoghi inconsueti o di rara bellezza fatti per essere cercati e dove portare il verbo della ricerca e della sperimentazione. È il caso della bella chiesa di origine romanica di Sant’Allessandro a Briona, piccolo paesino del novarese. La chiesa ha anche la particolarità di essere all’interno di un Camposanto: anche se faticosa, questa è certamente, da sempre una caratteristica del festival novarese, una sorta di caccia al tesoro che porta una piccola carovana di fedelissimi in terre, campagne, piccoli paesi, in un pellegrinaggio alla ricerca della poesia. E far poesia nella freschissima chiesa questa volta sono Sebi Tramontana al trombone e Frank Gratkowski al flauto traverso. Sebi Tramontana percorre la navata della chiesa facendo risuonare il suo trombone e dialogando con esso. Si potrebbe dire facendolo parlare attraverso la sua voce, una sorta di ventriloquismo dove fiato, fischi, sussurri e persino colpi di tosse, vanno a far parte del suono prodotto dallo strumento. Per parte sua Frank Gratkowski intesse con il trombone di Tramontana, un dialogo serrato fino quasi ad ingaggiare una sua sfida sonora fatta, anche qui con tutto ciò che da uno strumento si riesce a cavare. Suoni propri dello strumento e suoni indotti da un modo di far musica non necessariamente ortodosso e con un risultato di rara bellezza. Ma non è finita qui, come in una processione laica, la carovana, con i musicisti in testa, si trasferisce nella “vinaia” dell’imponente castello Solaroli di Briona. Qui, anche grazie alla squisita disponibilità dei proprietari, Tramontana e Gratkowski continuano a tessere il fitto dialogo questa volta principalmente tra trombone e sassofono. Una improvvisazione segnata dalla cifra del confronto dialettico degli strumenti, che non lesina stridii e dissonanze e che, come capita spesso in questi contesti, sembrano essere perfettamente idonei ad amalgamarsi con il fascino delle architetture e dei paesaggi. Basta sapersi abbandonare alla potenza salvifica del suono e dei suoni. In conclusione di una seconda ed intensa giornata del festival, ancora una jam session allo spazio Nòva animato dai musicisti della scuola Dedalo di Novara.
