ken's whole story is built in [insecurity and loneliness] that funnels into [anger] which turns into [GRIEF guilt and even more anger] which makes him the prime suspect to be used but also makes him , like , fundamentally mentally weak , leads him down an even LONELIER path, leads him towards cruelty , and the turning point in his story is actually like. he describes it, verbally, as realizing in his moment of healing that his parents loved him. like going through life feeling completely abandoned by a better-than-you brother who was also suffering under their parents' negligence towards their kids' emotional stability, feeling abandoned by your parents, and then that brother dies and you are still left standing in his shadow, its just even bigger now, its full of grief, and youre full of grief, and you dont know what to do other than to just stare empty-eyed at his closed casket
and all you thought before was i hate you, i want you to dissapear and now you want to take it all back, because did i do this? did i wish this into existence? this isnt what i wanted. this isnt what i meant.i was nine years old and angry and sad and alone but i never wanted you to dissapear. not for real.and now your room is just your room, and you get an email, and someone wants to help you :-). except no he fuckign doesnt he just gives you a place to relinquish all that anger, and it builds, and youre still alone but youre convincing yourself now you have control over that. you step into your brothers shoes. youre better than him now. youre finally how tall he was when he died. your parents seem so happy to have their boy back. they dont realize they never got him; they just lost the kid they had left. you are a husk made from guilt and grief and you fill it with anger until its exploding from every part of you. you no longer know who you are, but the news decides youre ken ichijouji, boy genius and soccer star! so you go with that. eventually you find your way to your escape. a new world. and you get to decide who you are in this game; you get to pick your destiny, you get all the control. theres no consequences for not smiling at the camera, here. and youre alone, and the world is weak, and theres something itching in your mind; something telling you what to build and how to build it, and you never know your control isnt actually your own. you never get to know. you play the game how you want to. its your world. its not your parents, its not your brothers, its yours, this is yours and you are going to fucking rule it!!!!!
ken is very much like , hurt-people-hurt-people but the thing is that, in the real world hes trying very very hard to be NORMAL and NICE and GOOD even while hes bubbling with rage and hatred and wants to be left alone, he smiles for all the cameras everyone is putting in his face, taking his anger out in secret and only when nobody is watching, because hes aware of consequences but in the digital world there is no consequences. its a game, after all! then there's other players and at first it's kinda fun, having an enemy in your game, but then theyre not playing fair, then theyre in your way, its getting annoying, and its not fun anymore. and the worse you feel online, the worse you feel offline, and hes pissed, and everyone wants everything from him, and one day he throws it all down and decides fuck this and ken ichijouji runs away. the ichijouji family loses their second and final son. (this is their turning point, too. they realize maybe osamu was never happy, before he died. maybe they pushed ken into the same box. they bury their faces in their hands and just pray they havent completely lost their chance to try)
ken- the kaiser- is having a really Really Bad Fucking Time. hes not even having fun anymore he just wants to be in control of something, he wants the chance to be a winner, and theres other players and theyre in the way. and then. well, shit. and then they win. Doesn't that suck? It’s the first time you’ve failed at something in years. i like him. i like the digimon kaiser. thats just a little kid hes up playing games in this bitch. its shown he actually really, really loved and admired his brother, and i feel like this and his persona as the kaiser are involved. he literally resembles so much of his brother even in his persona as someone who rules the world isnt it crazy how you resemble your prodigy brother no matter where you go or what you do because without him there youre the only one who could possibly fill the space. ken is nobody, but everyone loved osamu. why not be osamu? even if you dont realize it!!!
thats all a big part in why he claims he doesnt know himself after it all goes down this kid has no clue who he is. only wormmon does. quite literally only wormmon knows who he is. who he was before it all went to shit. who he was while it happened. only wormmon was ever there for him. and he treated wormmon like shit, for so long. how do you ever forgive yourself for that? wormmon tells him he's kind. he really is. under all that anger and guilt and never ending sadness, hes kind and hes just lonely. and so ken turns his life around. IT MEANS SO MUCH TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOBODYGETS IT NOBODY UNDERSTANDS HIM LIKEI DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HE HAS NEVER KNOWN ANYTHING BUT THE FACT THAT HE WILL ALWAYS EXIST IN HIS BROTHERS SHADOW SO HE GROWS INTO HIS BROTHERS SHADOW AND ITS ONLY WHEN HES TORN DOWN TO NOTHING, INTO A GUILT-SOAKED MESS , DOES HE STEP OUT OF IT. KINDNESS IS THE ONLY WAY OUT. HE SPENDS HIS TIME TRYING TO MAKE UP FOR WHAT HE DID AND HE ONLY HEALS ONCE HE REALIZES HIS PARENTS AND WORMMON LOVE HIM, ONCE HE HAS FRIENDS ALWAYS READY TO BE THERE, ONCE HE LEARNS TO, AT THE VERY END, BE KIND TO HIMSELF TOO, AND FACE OSAMU AND FORGIVE HIMSELF

I have an au where Osamu Ichijouji and Ryo Akiyama accidentally get into digi world shenanigans while 02 is happening and I made Osamu’s partner a funbeemon which can only communicate via buzzing and other than people who knew Morse nobody could know what she was saying instead of osamu himself.
Now I’m thinking of having them interact with Ryo(Tominaga) and kunemon.queue shenanigans due to that fact Two people with the same name are in the same room, two nonverbal bugs, and their partners who can actually understand the other bug just a little, and the questioning of logistics of the nonverbal bugs.
(Also both Ryo’s bond over their smartass boyfriends-)
Did you mean
KEW shenanigans?
gottem
Anyway omg I love this
Kunemon, angry for some reason: kewkew kew
Ryo T., not looking for a fight: uhhh,,,he said that's not a bad idea
Funbeemon: *buzzing*
Osamu: *gasp* no he did not!
But also yes, Ryos being friends XD!
They could have fun with it. One of them responding when they know darn well the other person was trying to talk to the other Ryo. (Usually they honestly don't know which one is being addressed, but I think it'd be funny if when they do know, they're obnoxious about it XD)

Case 35 preview!! (this one might be longer?)
“He promised to not let those two know tho, but that’s not important! He said the person pretending to be the Kaiser is someone who doesn’t exist anymore!” “What?!” the group gasped, not being sure if they misunderstood Daisuke or not. “What do you mean??” Takeru decided the best for everyone was just ask Daisuke to explain that information, “You mean like a ghost… A spirit?” “No, he said… Someone who got his entire existence removed from this world,” at this point not even Daisuke himself was sure what that meant, but he tried his best to explain, “Like, Noel said this person… Was completely erased, so he does not exist at all.” “Someone who faked their own death perhaps?” Iori mused. “Beats me,” Daisuke shrugged, “But he said this person knows Ken well enough because…” “Because…?” Daisuke took a deep breath before continuing. “What is it, Daisuke?” Ken asked. “You’re going to freak out if I say so…” “Spill it, Daisuke!” Miyako stared at him, threatening the google boy with a french fry. Takeru placed a hand on Daisuke’s shoulder, since he was sitting next to him, “If this could lead us to catch that guy before someone gets severely hurt, you should not hesitate to tell us.” “Exactly,” Hawkmon agreed in a nod. “Ok, so… Uh… How can I say this without sounding weird--” “Say it already!” they all said, impatiently now. “This person was Ken’s friend before they got canned!” he blurted it pretty quick, but still understandable. “A… A friend?!” the kids and their partners exclaimed. “I… I had a friend before?” Ken was perplexed, “But the only friend I had before you five was…” He hesitated to say that name, he didn’t even want to believe this could’ve been a possibility. “... Ryo-san, right?” Wormmon said for him, though. “Who?” Patamon asked. “Akiyama Ryo,” Ken finally answered, he closed his eyes and sighed. “Do you think it’s this person, Ichijouji-kun?” Hikari made the next question this time. “I… I don’t know,” Ken frowned, “This is the only person I met before, he was Osamu’s classmate. But we only got closer when I met him in the Digital World… He also helped me a bit when Osamu passed away, as if he were a brother figure to me.” “Hmm…” they all were musing. “I don’t want it to be true” Ken opened his eyes and glanced at Wormmon, frowning. “Hey, maybe there’s a reason for that!” Daisuke said in an attempt to comfort Ken, “Like, maybe he’s brainwashed or somethin’?? Evil clone? Maybe he’s not gone mad!” “Daisuke is right,” Miyako nodded, “I don’t think this would be purely intentional. Sounds more likely to be someone under an evil digimon’s control.” “Thanks…” Ken smiled, timidly. But deep down he doubted it. He never had talked with Ryo since he became the Kaiser. I don’t even remember when was the last time I saw Ryo-san…
Akiyama Ryo mention? 🤔
the plot thickens!?

Since it popped up on the Podcast, how would you rank the sibling dynamics from healthy to trainwreck?
This is an innocent-sounding question until you go over the franchise and realize just how many sibling relationships there are in Digimon and that all but like three of them have elements that might raise eyebrows. In the interest of being comprehensive, this includes all named characters in any anime, manga, and game I’m familiar with, treating the reboot separately and including Survive because... (looks at Kaito and Miu’s bios) ...holy crap.
Sibling Relationship Rankings! (Healthy is Higher)
Joe & Shin Kido (Adventure): Shin understands Joe’s hang-ups and offers support to make his own choices without steering him in any specific direction, for or against the family. And Shuu exists too (depending on the language you’re watching in)
Juri & Masahiko Kato (Tamers): For all of the awkwardness and potential points of fracture in the family, Juri and Masahiko are very close. Fun Fact: She started carrying around her iconic hand puppet to amuse and entertain him!
Keito & Nozomi Tamada (Re:Arise): Even with very different personalities, Keito and Nozomi have a lot of respect for each other. Unlike some big brothers, he comes to a mature conclusion when he realizes she’ll be just fine with Pumpmon at her side.
Yamato Ishida & Takeru Takaishi (Adventure 2020): Yamato’s worry over Takeru only affects his reluctance to take on time-consuming side quests when he might be in danger. Far more chill about trusting Takeru with the rest of the team, he’s a motivation rather than a mental handicap.
Masaru & Chika Daimon (Savers): Perhaps a more controversial pick for the healthier side, but Masaru and Chika have a playful relationship that proves that Chika dishes out as much as anyone in the family. Given how much harm DATS and Digimon have done to the family, Masaru risks her love to keep them away from her.
Joe & Shin Kido (Adventure 2020): Shin’s still supportive and still encourages Joe to make choices for himself, but having that bugout bag ready to go raises some serious questions about that family and which side Shin’s really on.
Ai & Makoto (Tamers): Toddlers fight. It’s okay. They come together for Impmon’s sake and the fact that they’re the only duo in the franchise with mutual custody over a digivice has to say something about the strength of their relationship.
Nene & Kotone Amano (Xros Wars Manga): Nene’s tactics are still desperate but not quite as extreme as the anime, and it counts for so much that Kotone fights so hard for Nene once the tables are turned. And good lord that backstory...
Takuya & Shinya Kanbara (Frontier): There’s definitely a sense of Takuya lapsing into thinking Shinya encapsulates everything frustrating about having an older brother, but he gets over it.
Miyako Inoue + Three (Zero Two): Perfectly normal large household. And while wondering what it would be like to be an only child is something every youngest does... top of mind fantasy, Miyako? Really?
Jianliang & Shaochung Lee (Tamers): Speaking of four-packs... there’s no doubting how much they care about each other, but Jian’s occasional short fuse with Shaochung betrays his usual calm demeanor, and we never get a picture of the full family dynamic once Rinchei and Jaarin are included.
Daisuke & Jun Motomiya (Zero Two): Everyone likes to paint Jun and Daisuke as something uglier than it really is. As much as they annoy each other, it’s still a pretty conventional sibling dynamic and they’d still fight hard for the other... even if the feeling’s closer to obligation.
Koji Minamoto & Koichi Kimura (Frontier): There’s no questioning the bond they develop, but there’s no way Koji and Koichi go from “don’t know the other exists” to “ZOMG Twinzies!” without a ton of awkwardness and feeling each other out. They’ll get better, but from our standpoint this is where we start to drift into trainwreck territory.
Tomoki & Yutaka Himi (Frontier): Tomoki can spin it all he wants but Yutaka comes off as a real jerk. Not that some resentment isn’t a little justified given how much Tomoki is coddled, but taking it upon himself to be the bearer of tough love is still not cool.
Taichi & Hikari Yagami (Adventure 2020): Hikari has a blind faith that Taichi can save the day in any circumstance, up to and including international shipping crisis. Meanwhile Taichi sees Hikari lapsing between typical friendly eight year old to brainwashed robot and doesn’t find any problem with it.
Yamato Ishida & Takeru Takaishi (Adventure): Lessons in how not to be an overprotective big brother. Yamato freaks out at the slightest notion that Takeru might be exposed to danger, including his very presence in the Digital World. When you have a complete nervous breakdown realizing that little bro’s actually pretty capable on his own, it’s not about your relationship with him anymore.
Touma & Relena Norstein (Savers): There’s caring about a little sister, making her plight a central cause in your life, and then involving her in a chess match with a madman. There’s a lot to forgive here (they are raised in a family where your kneejerk reaction to Grandma is “I bet she supported the Nazis in World War II”), but everything about their relationship just makes you uncomfortable.
Kaito & Miu Shinonome (Survive): Maybe it’s not fair since their game is the franchise’s unicorn, but their bios have warning flags all over it. He’s overprotective, ready to fight at the slightest hardship, and she repays this attitude by being rebellious and weird and eager to pursue trouble. May end up being worse once the game actually comes out.
Rei & Hajime Katsura (Appmon): Another one where their backstory makes you sympathize with the lengths they go to in order to stay together, but risking the security of actual guardians to go it alone? Jesus. Even with their ride or die attitude, you still sense a bit of friction in their relationship, and so many of their hardships are their own doing.
Nene & Yuu Amano (Xros Wars): There’s nothing seemingly wrong on the surface between Nene and Yuu, but that’s why their actions are so extreme. Yuu’s more than happy to treat her as an enemy general in his game, while Nene’s aligning herself with dark forces and causing real trouble to get him back. It’s all very loud and intense for a relationship that, without external influences, is just nice and cordial.
Yuuko & Yuugo Kamishiro (Cyber Sleuth): You can be anything you want on the internet! So why not take the identify of your big brother who was stricken with a mystery illness at a young age and lead a legion of hackers? And if you’re Yuugo, use your digital body to take control of that avatar! Nothing weird about any of this!
Ken & Osamu Ichijouji (Zero Two): Like Tomoki, Ken can come up with whatever rationale for Osamu’s abuse he wants, and Osamu at least had some kind moments, but there’s no denying that this family was a mess. And of course Ken’s reaction to Osamu’s death... could have been better.
Taichi & Hikari Yagami (Adventure): Hikari’s introduction to the series was intended to be a little creepy, and that just sets the tone. Her blind loyalty to Taichi is a primary point of emphasis through three series, and Taichi sometimes goes ballistic worrying about her... when not accidentally endangering her life. And that’s before she unleashes a world-destroying abomination at the mere suggestion that Taichi’s dead, and why telling him “what you’re doing is wrong and I kind of hate you for it” is a big moment for her, even though she’s wrong.
Neo & Rei Saiba (V-Tamer): There’s going a little overboard to keep your family together or save a sibling’s life, and then there’s aligning yourself with evil forces to avoid having to deal with your sister’s manageable disability. Call it being jaded or delusional, but when it drives your sister to attempt suicide there are definitely issues you two need to work through.
Erika & Ryuji Mishima (Cyber Sleuth Hackers Memory): Because aligning oneself with Arkadimon is always a fantastic idea. He’s overprotective, she manipulates him because of it, there’s resentment, there’s anger, and basically the entire game is spent watching these two outdo each other in terms of causing wanton destruction throughout the city and cyberspace.
Honorable Mention: Bagramon & DarkKnightmon (Xros Wars): The battle of who can stab the other in the back last.

Drabbles :: On the Events leading up to the Accident
A selection of drabbles set in my universe where Ken and Osamu are twins, focusing on his relationship with four important people in his life.
---------
Osamu
They met in the womb.
They shared everything but their names for the first half of their lives. They were happy, cheerful. Osamu worried over Ken at first, because he saw their parents worry and copied them, learning how to worry. At the time when they were still treated more or less the same, there was one thing that separated them.
Ken was the smaller twin.
Yes, like all twins, they were premature, but for a while, Ken was the one that no one thought would make it.
He was just
so
small.
He went to the doctor’s often enough that he even made a friend that was also frequently there.
Their first day of school, Osamu went and Ken was taken for another checkup. Just in case. That’s about when everything started going wrong.
The teachers noticed that Osamu was more than just advanced for his age (a fact that their parents had barely noticed at home), he was simply genius. Everyone started fawning over him, asking questions.
“What’s it like to be the smartest boy in the country?”
“What do you think you’ll be when you grow up?”
“You’re so smart, I’m sure you’ll solve this nation’s problems by the time you leave high school, right?”
And it was
fine.
It was fine.
Ken got it, he understood. He wasn’t actually sick anymore, just the occasional relapse. So of course his parents focused on the good news instead of the bad news that he would always have problems. Of course his parents throw their love to just the elder twin. Ken was alive and the doctors were no longer worried he could die.
So now Osamu got everything. Because there would be plenty time to give Ken love and affection once the cloud of fame passed.
They were just happy he was living. No other accomplishment Ken did mattered, especially if Osamu did it first.
That’s just how life was now and Ken would have to deal with it.
---------
Kouichi (& Kouji)
They met in the hospital.
He doesn't know exactly how old they were. He just knew that one second he was crying from being away from his mother. And the next, two identical faces were peering at his through the glass, a chair has been propped up next to it.
The three children put their hands on the glass, making faces at each other and smiling. None of them were good at words yet at all, but they managed with whatever words they knew best.
Then a tired nurse noticed the interlopers and quickly corralled them back to their mother, leaving Ken alone again, but much happier than before.
The next time he saw that face, there was only one and he managed to introduce himself as Kouichi (or, well, Ko'chi). And the other half of that pair was struck from his mind as Ken believed it had always only been just Kouichi.
They were fast friends. Sure Ken was stuck to whatever room the nurses put him in for the day, but when they realized that the two children were friends, they always made sure to bring Kouichi around.
One day, Ken remembered asking why another kid was in the hospital. Because he was so used to hearing adults say how sad it was that a child was sick. Part of him had begun to wonder if normally only adults got sick.
"Mama works here, and Grammy can't always watch me, so Mama brings me here and then I get to play with you!"
It was so simple.
Osamu was introduced to Kouichi the one time the older twin came with Ken to an appointment, introducing Kouichi to the world of twins.
And so they continued to spend their childhoods within sterile walls, beside a friend they knew they could count on.
They really should have traded phone numbers at one point or another.
---------
Miyako
They met in the schoolyard.
They weren't in the same class, much less the same year, but they were about the same size at the time. And when some cruel older kids thought they could pick on the scrawny kid, they ended up having to deal with both him and a helpful passerby that was happy to introduce herself to him.
Ken remembered his manners while covered in scratches and dirt, bowed his head, gave his first name and offered his thanks.
Then he ran away from her.
She spent a week looking everywhere for him in her year but never thought to ask the older kids.
She sat on the counter in her family's mart, swinging her legs over the ledge, and complained about this very annoying fact of her new school life to her parents who made sure to hum thoughtfully in all the right places.
Then Ken walked in with his twin and their mother and suddenly everything made sense.
She happily talked his ear off while his mother shopped and his brother gave her strange looks.
She stopped looking for him at school when he quietly mentioned that he tries not to stick out too much and just spends his free time at school near a teacher since then.
Of course, that just meant that every time the twins came by to buy this or that, she would talk his ear off while shopping instead.
Osamu never seemed to warm up to her but she lived for those small smiles Ken would give her when she told a particularly funny story.
---------
Ryou
They met in the classroom.
Ryou wasn't from Tokyo proper, and if the rumors and names the older kids called him were true, then Ryou wasn't even from Japan. But that didn't stop him at all.
Ryou walked into the classroom, giant smile on his face, introduced himself in pitch perfect proper Japanese, and immediately started chatting with Osamu, his deskmate.
Ken would watch them. See Osamu's lessening frown and Ryou's softening smile, and wonder how they could possibly act like they had just met when it was so obvious they must have known each other before.
It turned out they met in a chatroom for some computer nerds in grade school still.
Osamu wasn't even supposed to be on any of those chatrooms, their parents had explicitly forbid it for either twin.
When the teacher assigned a partnered project, Osamu of course allowed to work alone due to the assumption no one else would actually have anything to contribute to him, Ryou looked around before his eyes landed on Ken and he said he would work with him.
They ended up doing their projects at the Ichijouji house, Osamu still having a mild streak of protectiveness and not wanting Ken to be at some random person's house or be forced to walk home alone.
Their friendship never truly kindled until the time Ryou dropped by unexpectedly to pick up a left-behind textbook and they were pulled into the digital world.
There they had no choice but to become friends and partners in a war for a world that wasn't their own. Placing trust in someone that needed to have your back or else you could never go home.
---------
And so
Time would pass.
Ken would slowly get angry at this twin, wishing for his demise and not understanding why he couldn't just get a scrape of affection again from their parents.
Ken would be there for Kouichi when his grandmother would get sick, but when she died, Ken would be nowhere in sight, too busy dealing with his own dose of death and trauma.
Ken would distance himself from her once the accident happened, unable to bear seeing the street where he lost his twin without falling into a panic attack.
Ken would forget everything that happened in the digital world, believing it to be a fantasy he came up with after watching his brother and Ryou get close, a fantasy he made up when he relapsed.
Because that's what everyone believed when Ken, who had been happy and healthy one moment, suddenly became feverish, claiming pain where no one saw anything.
Osamu would worry quietly, wondering what happened to Ryou, but more worried about the stories on Ken's lips.
Kouichi would be alone as his grandmother told him he wasn't alone, he had a twin named Kouji that was taken away from him.
Miyako would tap her fingers on the counter of i-Mart, wondering why she had the worst feeling weighing down her heart.
Ryou would be gone, soon if not yet, learning that his enemy was meant to be his partner, torn between duty and what felt right.
Then the fever passed and Ken could stay awake for longer than a half hour at a time, could walk around with barely any help, could leave the hospital.
By this time, Ryou is officially gone from this universe, the memories of everyone that knew him slowly being adjusted to be a world where had never existed.
Osamu clung to fading memories even as he took Ken on a walk to the i-Mart, not noticing the truck until it was too late.
Miyako had been at the counter again, feeling dread in her heart she had raced to the door once she heard a terrifying sound, then she screamed for her parents and they brought her and Ken inside and wrapped them in blankets as they called the ambulance.
Elsewhere, Kouichi had known Ken was in the hospital, but he hadn't been allowed to see him, so he missed the memo that his friend had left, and instead focused on his new quest to find his own twin brother.

@ree-fireparrot reblogged your post: "If there's ever a character in a series I like who..."
[post]
Using this roundabout format of response because that was going to get really long (and now I’m wishing I’d used a read-more from the get-go, oops)! I don’t want to intrude on your fanfic writing process too much (I think these are all incredible and fascinating and well-thought out ideas, incidentally), but since you did leave off on two big questions you’re concerned about, I figured I should probably throw in suggestions to maybe help those out a bit:
Regarding the Ichijouji parents, it didn’t actually take all that much in canon for them to realize they messed up, and a lot of this was lack of communication (as usual) -- in 02 episode 23, Ken’s mom points out that for all it seemed, Osamu seemed to like studying (and they probably assumed that the boys liked all of the attention they were getting, too). So in essence, the brothers weren’t really properly communicating that something was wrong; in fact, they probably were trying not to communicate that, since they wanted to please their parents and make them proud -- among the various pressures put on kids that 02 addresses, “being well-behaved” is cited as one of them, so the part of this kind of tragedy is that the situation is set up so that the parents aren’t likely to figure out unless they look deeper between the lines. Of course, Ken suddenly “running away from home” and leaving behind a cryptic email (one that a lot of people have pointed out can be easily interpreted as a suicide note with a sufficient lack of context) was the wake-up call for them in canon, but it’s possible it didn’t need to be something that drastic, because before then everything had seemed to be “fine”, with the worst happening being that Ken suddenly started shutting himself in his room increasingly more often. (In fact, I’d say that a lot of the dominoes that made up the Ichijouji family’s crisis were set to fall anyway -- it’s just that the whole Chosen Child and Digital World thing didn’t make them fall as much as a massive torpedo blew through it.)
Archnemon says to Ken in 02 episode 26, and Oikawa says to Ken in 02 episode 48, that they used him as their pawn because he was in the right place at the right time, and there’s nothing special about the fact it was him -- “human weaknesses are easy to manipulate.” There wasn’t any real meaningful correlation between his position in particular and which person they wanted to use as a pawn (in fact, in the latter case, Oikawa doesn’t actually mention the Dark Seed as part of his reason, he just says “because you were a Chosen Child, that’s all”). So any Chosen Child (of which there are a lot of in 2002) who could be sufficiently manipulated could have become Oikawa’s pawn, and since Oikawa’s goal was specifically to get the Dark Towers up and running for the sake of distorting the Digital World, you don’t necessarily need to have a Kaiser, just someone who can play into their hands and do everything they need them to do. It’s just that in canon, the way things played out was the way it optimally panned out for them; Ken was the son of his coworker and had all of the signs painted all over him at Osamu’s funeral, so he was basically all he needed at once.

[fanfic] Secret of Ears:  Chapter 1
Ken carefully arranged his hair so that it fell over his ears, checking his reflection. The tips still pointed out of his hair, but not enough that anyone would call attention to them. He nodded; just the way that he liked them.
“Why do you hide those, Ken-chan?” Wormmon asked, peering up from where he sat on the back of the toilet.
Ken rested his hands over his ears for a few seconds before he turned to look at his partner. “Haven’t you seen other humans’ ears?”
Wormmon tilted his head, considering. “Well, yes. Yours aren’t like those.”
“I know.” Ken looked back at the reflection before he reached to pick Wormmon up and settle him on his shoulders. “But that’s why I don’t want people to see them.”
His ears were just different. The skin on them was paler than the rest of his body. But that really wasn’t the problem. He wouldn’t have cared if that was the only issue. They were pointed. Far more so than anyone else’s that he’d ever seen. He could keep his hair over the ends most of the time. No one had said anything about them for ages.
Though he did remember – long ago, when he’d been young, before his hair grew out to cover them. He didn’t remember the kid’s name, but one kid he’d played with at a park had – he shuddered just at the memory before he carried Wormmon out of the bathroom and into the living room.
Daisuke lay on the couch in the living room, V-mon next to him, chatting about the latest soccer scores with Ken’s dad. His dad didn’t play soccer, but he’d learned enough about it when Ken had to keep up with Daisuke.
“Ken!” Daisuke jerked up to his feet and grinned the moment Ken entered the room, previous conversation forgotten. “What took you so long?”
Ken just shook his head, ever so carefully. Daisuke knew about his ears but he never said a word about them. He never had, not since Ken started doing his best to be a better person.
“Are you ready?” Ken asked instead of answering. Daisuke wouldn’t press. He never did.
“Sure.” Daisuke waved at Ken’s dad, who waved back at him. “We can finish later?”
“Sure!” Mr. Ichijouji nodded. “You boys have fun and behave yourselves!”
Ken fought back a blush. His parents were well aware that the two of them weren’t only best friends. He thought they were a little sad that they’d never have biological grandchildren but Ken hadn’t ruled out the idea of adopting one day. He hadn’t talked about it with Daisuke or Wormmon, though. They were fifteen. There was so much time ahead of them.
Together the four of them headed out of the building. Daisuke chattered relentlessly the whole way, about at least half a dozen different topics, and Ken knew he was only required to nod and smile at the right points. He did listen, though. He loved hearing Daisuke babble about whatever was on his mind.
Right now it was ramen – which wasn’t a surprise since they were going out to have a ramen lunch. Daisuke insisted that he would have a ramen restaurant of his own one day and he searched for ramen all over the world. Ken didn’t even remember how many times he’d been taken out for ramen anymore. At least it was delicious – and Daisuke’s own cooking got better every time.
“You know, your ears aren’t that strange,” Daisuke said without warning. Ken stumbled over his own feet, catching himself, and staring at Daisuke.
“Where did that come from?” He raised one hand to make sure his hair remained tucked over the tips, while his other made sure Wormmon remained safe. Both those situations settled in his favor, he stared at Daisuke.
“I was just thinking, that’s all.” Daisuke shrugged. “I even know someone who has ears like that. Someone who isn’t you, I mean.”
Ken blinked, mouth working but not actually having nay words come out. He shook his head. No one else had those. He would have noticed – wouldn’t he?
“Yeah. You know him too.”
Ken didn’t have the chance to ask more questions, since they came to the train and they both had to worry with getting their tickets out and finding the right train. Once they got settled on their seats, he glanced around, not wanting anyone else to overhear this. While Digimon were known and the world remained in the process of adjusting to the existence of a fellow sapient species, there were always those who weren’t happy about it. He also suspected this conversation might bring up his past as the Kaiser and he really didn’t want that to be brought up around people who didn’t know.
There weren’t that many people around them right now. One little girl had her own Digimon partner, but no one else there seemed partnered. Ken nodded to himself, then turned to Daisuke, opening his mouth.
“Ichijouji? Is that you?”
It was a voice he didn’t recognize right away. But he wasn’t surprised that people he didn’t know knew his name – the remnants of fame clung to him, thankfully more for being a Chosen these days than anything else. He turned to see a teenager lurching down towards them. He was grinning wildly and threw himself casually into the seat next to Ken.
“Yes,” Ken murmured. “I’m sorry, I don’t remember you…”
“Yeah, you probably wouldn’t,” the teenager agreed a little too cheerfully. “Tachibana Noriaki. We played together when we were kids. Before your brother -” He waved one hand in lieu of finishing the sentence. Ken held back a flinch and managed to nod. He could think about Osamu without it hurting much these days. But he still didn’t like hearing him mentioned without warning.
Tachibana regarded Daisuke carefully before he looked back at Ken. “I’ve seen you on the news. So you grew up to be a hero, huh?” He grinned at the way Ken blushed. Daisuke leaned forward.
“Was there ever any doubt? He’s the best hero!” Daisuke declared without a breath of hesitation.
Tachibana grinned, displayed teeth that looked as if he had been sponsored by a toothpaste company. “Well, when he was a kid, I wouldn’t have guessed. Little kid drawing all the time.” He shrugged before he reached over and dug one hand into Ken’s hair, grabbing onto his ear. “And with these ears -” He pulled on the tips.
Ken jerked away, eyes going wide, and Wormmon glared at Tachibana. “Stop touching Ken-chan!” He snapped, ready to spew out silk at a moment’s notice.
Tachibana tilted his head. “Man, what’s the problem? You’ve see those ears, haven’t you? How can you resist?”
“Pretty darned easily,” Daisuke snapped back. “Leave him alone.”
Tachibana drew his hand back. “If you’re gonna be that way about it. Just trying to have fun.” He snorted and got up, walking to a seat farther away from them.
Ken leaned back on his own chair, tucking his hair back over his ears, trying so very hard not to tremble and not doing a very good job of it. Daisuke rested one hand on Ken’s.
“You okay?”
Ken nodded a little. His ears weren’t just a bit larger and pointed, they were sensitive. Having someone yank on them like that would leave them red and burning for ages.
Daisuke grumbled a few words that Ken suspected his parents wouldn’t be happy to hear on his lips. They were in English, and he had a surprisingly good accent. Ken tried not to feel so very warm inside from knowing that was because Daisuke was upset over something happening to him.
Before Daisuke said anything else beyond the few profanities, both of their phones started beeping, alerting them to a text. Ken glanced at his and blinked. He hadn’t expected this at all.
“A meeting?” All of the original twelve Chosen being called together by Koushiro. He wasn’t sure of what this meant, but it had to be something important. Izumi Koushiro wouldn’t gather them all without a very good reason. “Change of plans?”
Daisuke sighed, tucking his hands behind his head and pouting. “I guess. We can hit up the ramen place afterward? If it’s not too late.”
Ken nodded. He didn’t want to lose this special time with Daisuke, no matter what the issue was.
At least they were on the right train to get to Izumi’s place. Ken wondered what they would need to talk about. Some sort of new villain? They didn’t really have regular meetings when there wasn’t someone they needed to fight. He wasn’t even sure if they’d had those when there had been. He hadn’t exactly asked back then.
He ran one hand over Wormmon’s back and tried to ignore the way his ears ached. He’d been so looking forward to having a pleasant trip to a new ramen place with Daisuke. Today wasn’t turning out to be his day.
To Be Continued
Notes: Tachibana is probably Uchiyama’s second cousin or something. Maybe I’ll make that my canon for them. Anyway, I didn’t mean this as a chaptered piece but I ran out of time and writing juice to make it a one-shot. The full hurt/comfort will be there by the end. As will how the breeds work into this. Though I’m sure you can guess, if you know what Piemon looks like. Extra Notes: As of August 5, 2020, this story is on indefinite hiatus. I intended to restart in September, but YGO GX Month came up and it gave me ideas. So, once that’s taken care of, I’ll return to my WIPs.

name: Osamu Ichijouji ( 一乗寺 治)
aliases: various, ever changing online pseudonyms to avoid cultivating an established identity
gender: male
age: 14 or older
date of birth: June 8th, 1988 [date of death - October 11th, 1999]
place of birth: an alien planet, clearly, just look at that hair colour
hometown: Tamachi district, Minato; Tokyo
languages spoken: Japanese, English, Korean, German
sexual orientation: biromantic asexual
occupation: daycare nanny
eye colour: purple
hair colour: lavender
height: 150cm, got their tiny mom’s genes for that one.
scars: of the self harm variety
burns: here and there, from trying to cook for Kenny at age 4
overweight: yes. this is partially, again, their mother’s genes, but also due to the fact that he both stress eats and is not exactly in a position to burn off those calories easily
underweight: no
favourite colour: he wouldn’t tell you if he was asked, but it’s pink. this was ken’s favorite colour as a child, which he wore constantly. it reminds osamu of easier times, when all his brother needed from him was bubble mix
favourite hair colour: red, like that of Kurisu
favourite eye colour: blue, see above
favourite song: he doesn’t have one. like ken at age 11, he doesn’t really understand how music works and was never encouraged to because his parents wouldn’t want him to get attached to an artform, since artists are so poor. and it never really occurred to him in adult life to pick it up.
favourite movie: Oldboy. He likes Korean movies, for as long as his dad doesn’t catch him watching them.
favourite tv show: never has enough time on a regular basis to catch up with a show every week, and thusly only really watches movies in his spare time
favourite drink: Fake Denki-Bran
favourite book: similarly to his relationship with tv, never has the kind of time to read
passed university: no, never attended
had sex: yes, if this counts rape
had sex in public: no
gotten pregnant: he’s a cis man
kissed a boy: verse-dependant
kissed a girl: yes
gotten tattoos: nope
gotten piercings: see above
been in love: Ryou
had a broken heart: when Ryou left, and then later when Ken did the same
virgin: no
cuddler: definitely, though his means of doing so are awkward with his limited waist mobility. Osamu is an extremely clingy person with those close to him and this is very apparent in how often he wants them as close to him as is physically possible
kisser: indirectly, yes. he will take every opportunity he has to cover his little brother in kisses. not so much in romantic context. he’d do it if his partner liked it, since it doesn’t make him uncomfortable, but he wouldn’t seek it out a quarter as much as he would seek out cuddles
scared easily: by one, singular thing. the thought of losing ken, either to death, or to his brother growing fed up with his personality flaws and abandoning him. nothing else can scare him, not really, but Osamu has an intense and all-consuming fear of being abandoned. in his eyes, love is something eternally conditional, that can be taken away from him at a moment’s notice. he’ll do anything to placate an angered loved one.
jealous easily: very much so. due to his aforementioned fear of abandonment, Osamu has a tendency to be possessive to the point of his own detriment, afraid to be forgotten in favor of someone “better”. like kenny was ignored in his favor all those years ago.
trustworthy: as is probably self-evident by his canonical cause of death, Osamu would die in a heartbeat for those he loves. he would lie to them to protect them, but never would he intentionally hurt them, unless he thought he was choosing the lesser of two evils that his loved one might face.
submissive: though clingy and possessive he may be, Osamu is very quick to buckle under pressure from those he actively wants the affection of, as I mentioned before. he’s been all but trained to think that opposing those he loves will make them berate him and call him ungrateful for their affection until he gives up and does what they want. he’s aware of this pitfall of his, though, and this is essentially why he’s such a goddamn tsundere: he’s terrified of being that vulnerable to someone he doesn’t trust at least as much as Ken.
dominant: he picks up bad habits from his parents in how he treats Ken at an early age, but as soon as he develops the vaguest amount of critical thinking skills, he spends all his mental energy trying to subvert these teachings. as such, he’s quite the pushover with those close to him any older than 12.
in love: verse-dependant
single: yes
siblings: Ken
parents: Mama and Papa Ichijouji
kids: none atm
pets: none. likes snakes.

[08 - Still the Same as Ever]
“That kid reminds me of you.”
“What…?”
“It was like seeing another Daisuke, but that V-mon didn’t look like me. It gave me the impression it’s not an usual digimon.”
“What are ya talkin’ about V-mon? That kid cannot be me, we ain’t alike! Heh, I’d say he’s part of the goody-two-shoes group.”
“But they aren’t bad people, you know. They share the same desire as you.”
“If they did, then why would they accuse me of doin’ something bad!?”
“... Please, look at the situation you’re in.”
“They have the same desire as me…?”
He was at the balcony, admiring the view. That memory of what V-mon had talked to him before he and Ken left the Digital World caused confusion inside him.
“Why can’t they see what I am trying to do…? What Ichijouji and I are trying to prevent from happening again?”
Was it right, though?
“... I need to see that kid again.”
[Daichi’s World, year 2027]
Kiyoko mysteriously got a message from her brother saying he would stay at some friend’s home for a few days and to tell their mother to not worry about. oddly, the message came at the morning, so she had to explain things at the breakfast.
Miyako accepted that, just like her. and after leaving home for work… Kiyoko started to investigate her brother’s whereabouts.
“Daichi, where the heck are you? I told you were at Mitsuki’s house, but I just asked him and he said you didn’t see him yesterday. Whatever you’re doing, stop hiding stuff and let me help you doofus.”
She typed that while reading it with a quiet voice. When she hit the ‘send’ button, Kiyoko heard someone knocking on the front door aggressively.
“What? I didn’t expect him to return that quickly…”
She went to open the door, and after that… Someone stepped in very quickly and closed the door. She shouted and tried to use her phone to call for the police but…
“No wait, it’s me!”
“Ta… Taisuke!? Why are you wearing shades and a facemask!? Wait, your hair is… Down?”
“Argh, don’t ask me questions!” he snorted “No wait, I can answer that. Someone is… Following me!”
“Following you?” she frowned “Like, a digimon or a person?”
“I don’t know!” he took the shades and mask off “I was going to meet Eiji and suddenly I heard a ‘click’ ‘click’ and then…!! I had to go home and try to disguise myself!”
“You don’t know…” it wasn’t a good answer, but could her give him a hand at this hour? “If there’s someone following you, how about telling officer Ichijouji to investigate it?”
“It’s not… It’s not a police’s case! It’s some paparazzi!”
“I still think you need to tell officer Ichijouji about it.”
“How!? It keeps following me everywhere I go since yesterday! And my uncle is busy with the case of that attack on the theater event. A-and he might tell my dad about it!”
“So you want to hide it from them, to not let the adults know some creeper is following an innocent child-- Wait. I think I know who’s that creepy paparazzi following you.”
“D-do ya know!?”
She noticed someone very familiar outside right now through the window. Oh no, it’s him.
“It’s you Junya, am I right?” she opened the window “You jerk stop scaring my friends! I told you they’re NOT part of some conspiracy theory involving the legends!”
“Wait, what?” Taisuke blinked.
“Oh Kiyoko, I was passing by hehe--”
A teen revealed himself -- Spiky hair and with the same color as Motomiya Jun’s haircolor, holding a phone and now looking at her from the distance.
“If you bully my friends again I swear I gonna punch you to the outer universe!” she shook her fist “Now get outta here! Shush!”
“Wait, you know that person!?”
“He’s my cousin” Kiyoko answered unhappily “He’s a cool guy but he started researching for the Tale of the Chosen Children and ended up cooking some dumb theories. He said ambassador Yagami is hiding the truth from the world, that he knows those stories are real.”
“O-oh… Wait, what have I do with it!?”
“I’m sure he wanted to investigate your daily life, and perhaps make you spill the beans. Don’t worry, I know those are stories for children and that your dad isn’t hiding stuff from anyone else.”
“That’s illegal I think.”
“Yeah I know, I will fight him if he does it again. Let me know please?”
“Thanks” he sighed.
  [Parallel world, year 2002]
Daichi waited the end of the school activities on the next day so he could catch Daisuke and finally ask a few questions. It still bugged him that the Daisuke of that world wasn’t friends with the Chosen Children, and that Ken was also one of the enemies. Those made no sense! How in the world would two gentle and caring people could be completely the opposite of their counterparts from his world?!
They were on the other side of the street, watching carefully from there. Ulforce Chibi had been on Natsu’s arms, while Daichi kept his eyes on the school’s entrance, and checking it out the clock. Oddly, his digivice had adapted to that world’s time from all of a sudden.
“It’s almost the time-- Huh? Someone’s coming”
“Oi, kid!”
They wasn’t expecting him to be already there! And to be the first to leave minutes before the school’s ring bell rang.
“Can we talk for a bit?” he was smiling? That seemed suspicious.
“So… You have a digimon right?” they were walking on the sidewalk, with no idea where they were going. But Natsu assumed to be back to the Motomiya household “That lil’ plush here is your partner?”
“Yes, he is” Daichi replied, still unsure if he could trust Daisuke or not. The fear from yesterday was still present in his voice “B-but why do you ask it?”
“Look, sorry for… Attacking you? My friend does not like to get people messing with his plans. We’re doing something for the people.”
“Enslaving digimon won’t solve anything” Natsu replied with a cold tone.
“Geez, why do you think we’re enslaving them?” Daisuke seemed uncomfortable with that wording “Ichijouji and I are just makin’ them unable to evolve. The digimon caused damage to this world three years ago.”
“It still makes no sense!”
“N-Natsu please…” Daichi tried to calm her down “I’m aware of what happened, the Chosen Children told me.”
“But did they tell you WHAT the digimon actually had done to us!? They invaded this world, kidnapped children, took everyone in town as hostages. And, another incident changed Ichijouji’s life.”
Natsu wasn’t aware of the last part. Maybe it was… An event from that world?
“His brother, ol’ Osamu, was hit by a car which was damaged by the digimon interference. He survived, but he can’t walk anymore.”
Wait, what!? Ichijouji Osamu survived in this world!? Natsu was shocked by that reveal. Because, in Daichi’s world Osamu is…
“But mr. Motomiya, you can’t simply condemn all the digimon for those incidents!” Daichi tried to be reasonable with him “There’s good digimon too! The Chosen Children’s job is to protect the worlds, not to take control of an entire world to protect the other!”
“I agree, but… Takeru and his mean friends keep accusing us from being bad people! I’m not a villain!”
“If you’re not, then stop pretending that that does not affect the others!” Natsu hissed “If you’re a hero you need to stop Ichijouji Ken!”
“If I stop him… The digimon will invade this world again!”
“Do ya think we’re evil!?” Ulforce roared “If the bad digimon invade, then the Chosen Children will protect this world just like before!”
“mr. Motomiya,” Daichi said with a frown “mr. Ichijouji might be confused as well and if you’re the only person he cares about, you’re able to make him understand that.”
“... I don’t think if they… If Hikari and Taichi… Would accept me after all the damage I’ve caused to them.”
“They will! After all, mr. Hikari doesn’t seem happy fighting her friend. In fact, she seems hurt by it.”
Daisuke glanced at him in silence, so there is hope. The hope to fix the wrong choices he had taken.
“I will talk with him then. Maybe if I explain things… No, could you lend me a hand, kiddo?”
“Yes, I can try. Also, I’m Daichi and these are Natsu and Ulforce.”
“Well you can call me by Daisuke then” he chuckled “... Thanks for giving me a reason to do the right thing, Daichi.”
“So you knew what you were doing was the wrong thing…?”
“Eh, kinda of…” he laughed nervously “Every time I tried to talk with Ichijouji he… Seemed pretty distant from me. I stayed with him because I couldn’t stand seeing him alone. And he’s still hurt by what happened to ol’ Osamu.”
“Despite of everything… You’re still the same” Natsu muttered.
“I’m glad you heard me, mr. Motomiya” Daichi smiled “This shows that you’re a good person after all, just like mr. Takeru and mr. Hikari think about you.”
“They… They think that about me?”
“Yes, they do.”
“... Thanks.”
  [Daichi’s world, year 2027]
“Their information is correct,” Ken told Taichi via phone “I had been informed of a suspicious activity in the Digital World.”
“Is that… ‘Roar of Freedom’ they mentioned?”
“Yes, I think they’re connected to that incident from 2025.”
“... What do you need?”
“Nothing at the moment, but if I’m right about this… We might find him.”
“Sir!” an officer opened the door of the room “S-someone invaded and… And…”
“What?” Ken turned to look at the woman “I will call you later, I need to go now” he told Taichi and hung up “What happened?”
“The Strikedramon brothers… They had been… Deleted.”
“Deleted!? How!? The security of this building is…”
“We don’t know! All we got was… This.”
She gave him a paper with something written in Digimoji.
“... I will handle the case. Please, check the cameras and check if you can find something suspicious.”
“Yes sir.”
“Wormmon,” he looked at the digimon playing something on a tablet “Can you read this for me? I need to call the others” and he passed the paper to Wormmon.
“Um, let’s see” Wormmon took his reading glasses and examined the paper.
“Hello? It’s Ichijouji. Could you gather the rest of the group for me? I know we all are busy, but this is important. Ok, I will wait.”
Wormmon started to type the translation on the tablet.
“I need a gathering of all ten as soon as possible. No, it’s indeed important so that’s why I’m trying to reunite all of us. It also about him, I think I got a clue. Can’t tell that yet, and what I want to discuss is about--”
“Kenchan.”
“One sec, Wormmon was translating something for me.”
“Here,” Wormmon handed him the tablet and Ken read it aloud:
“... ‘You won’t win this time, Chosen Children. I know who all of you are.’ , huh?”
“That’s concerning…” Wormmon frowned.
“I think we have to reunite everyone right now. I got a message addressed to us.”

The Price to Pay
The conquest au is never going to be completed to an extent that would make full presentation of it viable but I can dream and I can write drabbles so here’s an excerpt or whatever from Ken’s storyline under the cut.
“You want what!?”
Osamu’s disbelieving question rang over the castle grounds, but no nearby servant or soldier bothered to look over and see the source of his ire.
“Is there some sort of problem, Lord Ichijouji? I’m pretty sure you offered to give me whatever I wanted, right?” the unwanted invader asks, picking at her nails in disinterest.
“And of all the things you could possibly want, you decide you want to take Ken!?” Osamu yells. The younger boy in question doesn’t say anything, almost unable to process the strange situation rapidly unfolding before him. Wormmon begins to shift nervously about in his arms, clearly just as uncomfortable and baffled as Ken.
“Oh, is that your name?” the lady asks Ken, sounding a great deal more interested in hearing about him than she was in Osamu’s indignant sputtering. Ken doesn’t know what to do besides nod.
“A lovely name! And you’re Wormmon, right? You’re quite cute, you know that?” The girl says, abruptly leaning down to address the nervous and now lightly blushing digimon in Ken’s arms. He’s about to say something when Osamu suddenly steps in and shoves himself in between them, putting arm’s length between the lady, and Ken and Wormmon.
“Nope. Stop that, you aren’t taking them!” He growls.
“Oh?” the lady drawls sarcastically.
“You can’t take Ken!” Osamu snaps, literally putting his foot down in some strange sort of emphasis.
“I don’t remember you saying that while you were offering to give me whatever I wanted in exchange for letting you not follow the rules. Sorry, sweetie. I’m taking him.” She says, and with a smile sweet as sugar, she grabs Ken and starts pulling him along.
“Because I didn’t expect you to ask for him! Why the hell do you want him anyways!? Can’t you take something else!?” Osamu spouts, trying and failing to get himself in front of the speedwalking lady.
“Well, I could take your entire kingdom, since that is technically what I came here for and what I earned by beating all your digimon to a pulp, but I thought I’d be nice and invade you another day since you whined so much.” She says, blatantly getting fed up and pulling Ken along even faster as the castle entrance is opened up in front of them. The colour drains out of Osamu’s face. He tries to make some form of rebuttal, but the only thing that comes out is useless fragments as Ken is marched out of the gate and into the group of warriors who’d come with the neighbour warlord pulling him along. Ken looks back and watches his home disappear behind the gigantic gates and he can’t help but wonder why this is happening to him.
At no point during the week long trek to Floralis does he work up the nerve to ask anyone.
He supposes he’s supposed to feel honoured or something. Lady Tachikawa was said to be one of the strongest warlords around. A lot of people were even starting to say that she might be the one from that old legend. But as he walks alongside the army and they enter the lively, sprawling and fancifully decorated city home to the Lady’s castle, he can’t help but miss the quiet, dark atmosphere he’s so used to. He’s pretty sure he’s going to get a sunburn. He isn’t all that used to getting sun, and he can’t say he’s much of a fan. Wormmon seems to be enjoying it quite a bit, though. He supposes that makes sense. Chimairac wasn’t exactly the healthiest kingdom for a bug to be living in. Ken prefers the dark, though.
Though he supposes there’s a chance he might not ever get to go back there.
That might be for the best though, since going back would likely involve Lady Tachikawa overthrowing Osamu for real.
...Why was he supposedly an adequate substitute for that again?
They enter the castle, and the warriors quickly disperse, some walking off into a corner to chat while others head to different sections of the unfamiliar place. Lady Tachikawa has yet to order him to do anything, and so he decides to take that as an opportunity to ask the question that’s been burning on the tip of his tongue since the second Lady Tachikawa stated her desired reward.
“Umm...er, Lady Tachikawa?” He asks as loudly as he can trust his voice to go. His new ruler turns to look at him with a smile on her face, and Ken takes it as approval to continue. “Why exactly did you decide to...well, to take me?”
“Oh please, your potential is completely wasted on a man like that. You’re better off here.” She says, and Ken has to bite back a retort. Why did this woman have to talk about his brother like that? Osamu was amazing! He was practically their kingdom’s savior. They would’ve gone extinct years ago if it wasn’t for Osamu’s brilliance.
But Ken hadn’t had the luck to inherit half of that brilliance. So what on earth was this lady talking about?
“What do you mean? I’m just a normal warrior, I’m really not even part of any of Osamu’s strategies.” He says, chewing on his lip a bit too strongly for his own good.
“Exactly! I actually thought I had something to worry about when you started suggesting all those ideas of yours. Your stupid ruler might’ve actually had a chance at winning if he’d bothered to listen to you for a second!” Lady Tachikawa explains with a smug look on her face. What? No, this lady had to be mistaken. There was no way that they could’ve won. Osamu had ignored him because his ideas were stupid and not worth listening to. Listening to Ken wouldn’t have changed anything.
Not sure how to respond to this baffling lady who was surely, surely wrong, Ken decides to ask about a different point than the actual focus of his attention.
“How did you...hear the things I was saying to Osamu? We were on the other side of the battle area...and it’s not as though the battle was quiet or anything.” Of course, a battle ground was pretty much never quiet with a Chimairamon charging around on it.
“A lady has her ways~!” The ditsy warlord responds, winking at him. How had someone with an attitude like this overpowered his brother’s army so easily? He doesn’t get it at all. Moreover, he still doesn’t understand what on earth this lady wants with him.
“So...um...what is it that you want me to do?” He asks slowly. The person now in charge of his life smiles like a cheshire cat and Ken can’t remember feeling more anxious.
“You’re going to stay right here!” She announces. Ken blinks in complete confusion, not knowing how to respond, and so she decides to start elaborating further.
“Well, someone needs to make sure the home base doesn’t fall to some floozy while I’m out conquering the world! Not that that person has to be you, don’t worry. I can tell you don’t think you’re ready for the spotlight. Look at you, you look like you’re about to pass out!” She says, bursting into laughter. Ken really does feel like he’s about to faint. He’s going to be left here to defend the castle?
Despite the reassurance that it’s not going to be totally his responsibility, he feels overwhelmed. Lady Tachikawa reigns over a giant amount of territory. She’s a huge target, no matter how you look at it. And anyone who was looking to defeat her would probably be attacking here. Where he was going to be left. Oh god.
“So...who exactly is going to be charge, then?” he asks tentatively, despite really wanting to ask if he can run back home to Osamu now.
“That would be Lady Motomiya. Not sure if you know about this, since that tiny little kingdom of yours might not get any news, who knows, but I took over Dracora a while back. Quite a fight, unlike another I could mention. So great, in fact, that I asked Lady Motomiya and her little brother to work for me.” She explains. Ken vaguely recognizes the names. That was the kingdom with all the dragons or something, right? Not know what to say still, he nods, and Lady Tachikawa continues her explanation.
“They aren’t exactly the sharpest tools in the shed, but they’re pretty infamous for their tenacity. And they’ve earned that fear, too. Though I’d been worried about what might’ve happened if they ended up against someone who uses their brain to fight. Lord knows my whole battleground might turn against them.” She says, as though Ken would have any idea what that means.
“But I don’t have to worry about that now, do I?” She asks with an unmistakable smugness in her voice and Ken's confusion wells up again. What on earth did this lady see in him, to make her think that he’s anywhere near capable of protecting a kingdom? It conflicted with everything he thought he knew for sure about himself.
Osamu hadn’t ever really considered him and Wormmon to be anything more than back up, though Ken had tried many times to convince him that Wormmon really could be of use, if only Osamu would just let him try to evolve him. The answer had always been no, he’d only get in the way. Just stick to the back and do as Osamu says.
But now Ken is being told that he was capable of a lot more than that. And he’s not sure how to feel about it. He says practically nothing. He doesn’t know what to say. He’s being told that not only is he capable of being useful, but that his brother was a fool not to realize it. His brother, foolish. Certainly, it couldn’t be true. This woman was overestimating him. He was just Ken. Plain and simple. He wasn’t special, he wasn’t some sort of tactical genius. He wasn’t even smart! Lady Tachikawa had to be crazy or something. That was the only explanation. But he doesn’t know how to explain to this lady that she’s made a terrible mistake. He just follows Lady Tachikawa as she ushers for him to follow.
He’s lead out into a lovely yard and into the presence of two new people. A pair who Ken could only assume were Lady Motomiya and her younger brother. Ken feels an incredible whiplash when the older girl greets Lady Tachikawa with an informal ‘Hey, Mimi!’, though the warlord in question doesn’t seem to care in the slightest.
“Hey, good to see you two again. Glad to see you haven’t burned down the castle.” She says, and Ken genuinely can’t tell if she’s joking. Either way, the other girl bursts out laughing. The boy snickers a bit, but seems more intent on staring at Ken for some reason. Ken represses the urge to try and hide away somewhere where he can’t be looked at, but he can’t stop himself from shrinking back a bit as the boy continues to stare him down. What on earth was this boy’s problem, anyways? Ken attempts to shield himself by scooting behind Lady Tachikawa, but the boy just moves to see him better. What a weird person. And an annoying one. Ken is on the verge of snapping at the other boy to stop staring when the stranger finally decides to speak up. Though not to Ken.
“Hey Meems, who’s this guy and why doesn’t he like smiling?” The boy says abruptly, pointing at Ken. The unnamed girl starts laughing even harder.
“I was getting to that Daisuke. Jun, this is your new advisor! Smart young boy, he’ll be very useful, I’m sure. Don’t know about the smiling thing, actually. You two should try and work on that. Take good care of him! Teach him how the grounds work, get to know him, all that. I’m setting out tomorrow, so make sure to tell me if you need anything by then. Good luck!” She spouts rapid fire, going over everything far too quickly for the other girl to get a word in. Without waiting for a response, she spins around and walks past Ken. “Oh wait, one more thing!” she says suddenly, and Ken turns around to see that cheshire cat smile on her face again.
“When you’re feeling up to it, go take care of that Chimairac kingdom, ok?” And with those words, she leaves.

It's not really what you write per se that says much about you. I'm starting on a dual fic project that will take many years to complete if I ever get there, but I've basically made almost everyone somewhere on the queer spectrum because cishets get canon everything ever. Even some of the stuff technically depicting same-gender relations is actually homophobic garbage made for cishets with a queer consumption fetish (think all yaoi and a fair amount of F/F adult movies)
In particular, I have a lot of bi+ and trans characters, particularly because cisgays hate the rest of the rainbow even more than cishets, but both groups alike will only allow a small amount of cisgay stories to be out there (formerly only if they were tragic, now, only if they're conventionally attractive and freshly 20 years old)
Of course, this does include NB people, and there's also some aro and ace characters.
So naturally, they encounter boatloads of queerphobia.
After living in LA, I realised the really bad skinhead problem out there, and one of my projects, they immigrate from Kanagawa province (Japan) to Los. And the main character's half-Ainu and married to a Jewish guy.
So, yes, they deal with skinheads up close and personal.
This means I'm also writing the skinheads.
It's also not necessarily how your protagonist feels about it, though most people will root for any protag, you can actually make your villian protag someone people love to hate and want to watch burn.
And that's usually where villian protag stories mess up.
It's all in the tone of the narrative. It's all in portraying the characters who do inexcusable things as someone doing something inexcusable. And the completely unforgivable as completely unforgivable.
Having been in the Bleach fandom for many years, I've seen a lot of fic writers have narrative that serves to wholly justify and uphold Noitora's sexism as it is in canon (particularly canon comic--it was softened a bit for TV as the TV show ran prime time) These also tend to be people that treat Asians and queer men as their personal playthings, which is seemingly the bulk of any Japanese comic fandom in English, so I wasn't surprised people were writing that. I'm mentioning this as a failure of narrative.
I'm having him be just as sexist, but he's even more of a villan than in canon, and his behaviour is clearly not approved of by the heroes or narrative, as it is not in canon before canon decides to justify him in another area.
(I read it as overdoing sympathy for someone who's actually a morally mixed bag, but when shown to Westerners, who generally, save select few, lack the comprehension skills to appreciate anything beyond "perfect" and "unforgivable" binary, a lot of people decided his misery in wanting to die meant his sexism and rapey behaviour was OK)
My other fandom is Digimon. In 02, the narrative clearly approves of bashing Daisuke left and right, even while how Ken was treated when he was younger was not. (And I was taught that any older person has a responsibility of sorts toward the kids around them, so narrative approval of Daisuke's home life never sat well with me, even if I wasn't exactly vocal in the fandom when it first aired [because I was already working and felt like I should just let the kids, who understood how to use this "Web" thing better, anyway, have it])
So the narrative clearly has some kind of double standard going on (not entirely "female Jun hitting Daisuke is OK, but male Osamu hitting Ken is not," either, though excusing a lot of Jun's behaviour toward everyone is a part of it. Clearly we were supposed to laugh along with Mr. Isida in ep 22. But for Daisuke, Mr. Motomiya ain't nice, either)
Contrasting the two, if you're familiar with Digimon 02, is a good example of narrative approval (Motomiyas) vs disproval (Ichijoujis)
If you're familiar with Bleach, the narrative surrounding both Noitora and Ulquiorra towards Orihime disproves, generally. It tries to make them empathetic in other ways, but again, it depends who you're writing to, and if they're known for appreciating moral ambivalence. Although I did roll my eyes at the edgy prequel comic for Ulquiorra in Unmasked. That totally should've been used for more Nel, Grimmjow, Starrk, or Tier, in my opinion. But anyway, if you're writing in English, giving a reprehensible character a sympathetic spot comes off as fully justifying the character. And since most people writing to Westerners as a primary audience are also Westerners, that's probably the intent, as well, for most people reading this.
The line Ichigo says to Kisuke about Aizen immediately after defeating him, though, was specifically meant to make fans fond of Aizen for some reason, and that is...I don't even get that. That's just actually throwing a wrench in your narrative.
There's also a major villan protag film recently that wholly justified a villan protag, who, in previous works, had always been meant to be unjustifiable.
That's the big fail: it's not writing the bigotry or senseless violence and crime or what have you, it's whether the tone of your story makes that Nazist or that rapist or what have you "justified" or "funny."
The only way to make it funny but not approving is when we're laughing *at* the bigot. Few who knew either of the above exemplified know this one, but my all-time favourite TV show wasn't even dubbed in my native language. The Mary Tyler Moore Show has a bigoted character, who, fittingly, is dumber than a grain of rice. When his bigotry factors into the joke, the joke is "Oh, my God, what a moron." The joke is on the bigot. They do really well in keeping the laughs rolling while clearly taking a stance against bigotry.
I actually overall recommend the show, but especially if you wanna see the only way to do "bigot joke."
So, no, it's not wrong to write these things *happening* at all.
I also read a play by play of the first half of that book that started out as Twighlight fic until the guy reviewing got sick of it. Had the narrative disproven of the love interest's behaviour, it could have actually been a great book about DV victims or predators in the scene going after the novices warping kink into an excuse to abuse. Instead, the narrative's approval turned it into "kink is abuse and this is good" which is a dumpster fire of wrongness.
It's not that she wrote about a guy using kink as a convenient way to wrap abuse in concealing rhetoric, but that the narrative justified that and slandered kink by presenting it as exactly what the love interest was selling.
So no, it's not wrong or something to have characters do bad things or even be completely unforgivable people.
But how your narrative feels about it does show the kind of person you are.

Davis’ Save Scumming Adventures Except He Doesn’t This Time
So apparently, in order for me to not kill anyone off, I must involve ghosts. Or use filler scenes.
Is it really cheating if a ghost tells you the answers?
It’s not Daisuke’s fault that the ghost keeps telling him what cards to play, right? Besides, it must get pretty boring being stuck in your apartment all day when nobody can see you, so it’s actually a good thing for him to let the guy have some fun. Or something like that.
Ken’s older brother, huh? Although it looks like Ken might be taller than him now. The guy had figured out that Daisuke could see him pretty quickly, not that he’d been subtle about it. He’d glanced at him a few times, enough to make the guy uneasy. Then when Ken had said that the photo was of his brother he’d straight up turned and looked at him. That’d gotten an undignified response of “Holy crap, you really *can* see me!” followed by a long period of uncomfortable staring. Not a surprise, seeing as he’d most likely gone unnoticed by everyone for years now. He’d eventually gotten over it though, and had since taken to helping him win go fish.
“Ask blondie for a jack” Sure, why not?
Apparently, he didn’t have one, which left Daisuke very confused as the ghost floating above him laughed. That is, until Ken asked him for his jack. He looked over at Ken’s pile as he handed him the jack and suddenly understood. He didn’t get how, but Osamu or whoever had somehow managed to put Ken in the lead. Huh.
Ok, he could roll with that. And so he continued to listen to the ghost’s unhelpful advice, through every game they played, and Ken continued to win, and Miyako continued to be bad at this.
“Doubt! Doubt, doubt, doubt!” Very, very bad at this. Too bad for her. Everyone laughed, and for once Ken was included in that everyone. It was then that Daisuke found out that Ken’s laugh was the cutest thing in existence. Wait, no that blush was. He was so distracted by trying to slow down his heart rate that he didn’t notice the stunned look on the ghost’s face until he said something.
“I…can’t even remember the last time I saw him look that happy.” The ghost stared at the ground as he said this, and Daisuke thought it looked as though he felt guilty about something. It was the way he looked the first time he’d seen him. He contemplated it as he and Ken rode across the city on Lighdramon.
It’d been after Ken had run away to the digital world. He’d seen Ken’s mother on tv crying her eyes out when a ghost had suddenly popped into the frame. Trying quite desperately to get her attention.
“Mom, mom, it’s Ken, he came back for something! Mom, he’s in his room! Hurry before he leaves, mom! Mom! MOM!” the ghost flailed around desperately to no avail. It would have been kind of funny if it weren’t so depressing. The poor ghost had tears in his eyes by the time he gave up. He drooped as he stared at the floor with the same expression Daisuke had just seen.
“Is this how Ken used to feel?” The whisper had been almost too quiet to be heard.
“Is this my fault?” The ghost was in full tears when he floated off screen.
He figured it’d be best to never, ever mention it to Ken.
Daisuke was having a sleepover at the Ichijouji’s two weeks after they’d defeated Belialvamdemon. Ken was sleeping like an angel and Daisuke would have been if not for the ghost floating over him and staring at him.
“What do you want?” He grumbled, irritation and tiredness clear in his voice. The ghost failed to care, apparently.
“To talk to the only person in years who’s been able to see me.” In a more well-rested state of mind, he might’ve sympathized. Right now, he rolled over and pulled the futon cover over his head.
“You can’t go to sleep. I’ll keep you up all night” He saw who Ken got the Kaiser from now.
“Shut up before I exorcise you” Hopefully this would work.
“Wait, you can do that?” No, he was bluffing.
“Yes, now shut up already” ‘Please fall for it, please fall for it’ he chanted internally.
“I think you’re bluffing” ‘God dammit’. He thought, sitting up.
“Screw it, you got me. Now what do you want to talk about at this lovely hour?” He glared daggers but it didn’t do him much good in the dark.
“Well first off, how can you see me?” Ok, yeah, that one was a given. Though he wasn’t quite sure he wanted to spill his whole deal where Ken, Leafmon and Chibimon could easily hear.
“Certain people can” He doubted that was going to cut it but you couldn’t blame him for trying.
“And those certain people are?” Yeah, that’s what he was expecting.
“Magic people” He whispered, praying that Chibimon wouldn’t suddenly decide to wake up and decide to go to the bathroom.
“Magic people, you say” He nodded.
“And you are magic how, exactly?” Oh for the love of god why.
“Um…” He stared up at Ken’s bunk, as if that would somehow keep him pinned down.
“I’m…immortal. And you’re going to accept that answer because I’m not about to go into any further detail within earshot of Ken. Now can I go to sleep before he wakes up and asks me why I’m talking to thin air?” He was paranoid, he knew that. But he also knew that said paranoia was completely warranted, so he didn’t care.
“No, I haven’t talked to anyone in years and I still have questions.” There was just no pleasing this guy.
“First off, is there anything that I can actually do as a ghost besides float through things and not be seen by anyone, ever?” Well at least no more questions with answers that’d give Ken a panic attack.
“Um, I think some strong ones are able to possess things. Like, put their body in an object and move it around. Also I think there are sometimes extra powerful ones who normal people can see.”
“Ok then, I guess.” He shrugs.
“There’s something else that’s really starting to bug me too.” His face is sullen as he says this.
“I’m starting to forget things. Like, really important things. I can’t remember things like when Ken’s birthday is, or where mom works…I don’t even remember how long it’s been since I died! What’s happening to me? What’s happening to me? Am I going to forget everything? I’m scared!” He’s getting more and more panicked as his talking turns into shaky sniveling.
“I’ve heard that, yes, if a ghost lingers without passing on for too long, that they’ll forget everything from their past life.” There’s no point in lying to him.
“WHAT?!” He cries, and Daisuke cringes before realizing that Ken won’t hear.
“Th-then what do I do? How do I pass on?”
“I don’t know” he replies lamely.
“Why don’t you? Help me, come on man! I can’t…” He doesn’t finish, just breaks off into more tears.
“I am literally the worst person to ask about this ok! Being a ghost isn’t exactly something I’m concerned about. Nor is it ever going to be.” Though he’s vaguely wondered once or twice now about the fate of his world-saving peers.
“You’re just going to have to figure it out yourself ok? I’m sorry but I really can’t help you on this one” Daisuke finishes, rubbing the back of his head nervously.
“No, it’s fine. That’s reasonable. I shouldn’t have pressured you like that. You can go ahead and sleep now.” He tries to sound reassuring but fails as he stares at the ground gloomily. There’s not much Daisuke can do but lay down and pull the covers up.
“Oh, and one last thing.” He hears behind him.
“Yeah?” He mumbles groggily.
“Thanks for taking care of him”
