#other things are knitted socks
Note
7. Im curious
7. hair-ties or scrunchies?
Hair-ties! Somehow scrunchies are among the many things where the idea of actually wearing them puts me off. I have no idea why, because they do look cute but I personally just stick to hair-ties.
Send me weirder asks!

i was looking back at my old knitting posts to check on a thing and like yeah i really did just rocket right up the knitting skill tree over the course of a few months. no wonder i'm convinced i can knit literally anything i've spent ten minutes reading and watching videos about.
my personal knitting trajectory is that i learned to knit at age 8, stopped knitting at age 16 or so, and did not knit anything more complex than circular knit legwarmers with mild shaping at that time (so i could make rectangles and tubes and slightly widen the tubes). (ok i also did one lace scarf for about four inches but it was very bad.) then i got back into it at the end of college, and my projects were lace cowl > multiple stranded colorwork hats > socks on dpns > elaborately cabled sweater (which i finished only the back and half a sleeve of, admittedly, and am now picking up again) > most of a beaded lace crescent shawl in the span of, like, five months. and then a bunch of other shit after that! i literally can just learn to knit whatever the fuck i want, that's just uncontroversially true. what a fantastic hobby

One thing I did realize a bit ago re: the southdown socks, is that despite all the work I did making them worsted prep... I didn't actually spin them entirely worsted. I never figured out how to smooth the yarn while spinning on spindles, I can only do it on a wheel. So these aren't like... the most durable possible version. No way can I get another pair out of the same fleece though. So, I'm mentally preparing myself for these not to be the bulletproof* socks of my dreams, but that's okay.
*literally just socks that last as long on my feet as they would on any other person. I don't know what is wrong with how I walk.

this was not what i intended to write today, but i got caught up in the mickey x lip best bro-ship madness (thanks to @gardenerian, @baguetteslut, @celestialmickey) and inspired by the @galladrabbles prompt for this week from @flamingbluepanda, and this happened! It is not exactly 100 words long...but it is 6.7 times as long as that, so I feel like that counts?? maybe?? Right?!
anyway, whatever it is, it's here:
They're clearing away after dinner when Lip and Tami show up.
“Where’s the kids?” Lip asks, pulling Ian into a one-armed hug and dropping a couple of knitting patterns on the table with a nod in Mickey’s direction.
“Tory’s room.” Mickey replies, all three of them had piled in there as soon as the last piece of pizza was gone. “Where’s your hair?”
Self-conscious, Lip scrubs one hand over his very closely-shaven head, a head that had had at least a half a head of hair on it this morning when Mickey had dropped Tory off for the school run.
“Ah”, Lip ducks his head with that squinting grimace he does, “the guy got a little excited.”
Tami snorts from over by the stove where she is picking pieces of zucchini out of the salad, and Lip shoots her a sharp glare.
“He found a gray hair.” She announces to the room, seemingly unaware of the daggers Lip is throwing her way. “Had a mid-life crisis in the car this morning, it was a whole big thing.”
“Christ Tami!”
“What? I was gonna ending up telling Ian later after a couple of drinks anyway, and you know he would tell Mickey, I don’t know why you pretend you can keep secrets.”
Lip rolls his eyes with a huff and skirts around the table to go say hi to the kids. Ian winces with second-hand guilt as he goes. Mickey and Tami just meet each other’s eyes and shrug.
“You ready to go?” Tami asks Ian, her feet clearly itching in her dancing shoes. His husband nods and gathers his wallet, jacket and keys, giving Mick a peck on the cheek and ushering her out the door.
It’s a few minutes before Lip emerges from the bedroom, salad’s all boxed up and Mickey’s popped a beer while he puts the last of the dishes away.
He stops at the edge of the kitchen area, hands shoved in his back pockets, and they regard each other for a moment, quiet.
“What’s up Grandpa?” Mickey says eventually, just to cut through the weirdness.  He’s trying to keep it light, he learned nearly a decade ago that shitting on Lip is no fun when it actually makes him feel shitty.
“Fuck off Mickey.” Lip grumbles, not quite in the pit of despair yet, though clearly sensitive.
Mickey wonders how he’ll feel, when his time comes. Or Ian’s. If Lip’s there now they can’t be far behind. He’s growing thick wiry hairs in new places and sneezing so loud you could wake his entire army of dead nazi relatives. He’s ageing. They all are. And it’s hard to know how to feel about it.
They are quiet, and his eyes drift to the box sitting by the balcony doors, delivered yesterday and yet to be opened. Assorted yarn from some dead lady’s knitting stores, he’d paid six bucks for it on ebay without knowing what was in it. That’s the kind of shit he did these days. Old Man Milkovich, buying yarn on the internet to share with his Geriatric Gallagher brother-in-law. If his fifteen year old self could see him now.
“Hey uh, estate sale lucky dip thing got delivered yesterday.”
“Oh yeah?” Lip looks relieved at the change of topic, and kind of psyched about the yarn, Jesus Christ they’re barely even forty.
“Wanna look through? Might be some shit you can use for Sockathon or whatever.”
“Yeah cool. Smoke first?” He nods, and they both move in the direction of the balcony, Lip patting his pockets for his smokes.
Mickey sidles up as they walk and gets a hand on the back of Lip’s head, fucking weird and bristly, he remembers hating Ian’s when he buzzed it in prison.
“Just try not to get upset if there’s any gray stuff in there.” He jokes, giving Lip’s head a hard shove and dodging away from the shove that comes in return.
“Suck a dick, Mickey.”
Later, Mickey thinks, with glee. Later, he's gonna. Lip probably doesn't wanna know though, it is his baby brother's dick after all.

Spinning some green merino to ply with the merino silk blend i spun earlier (i ended up spinning the whole bobbin that day), on a great suggestion from @swords-n-spindles . It's three different colors that im doing longish repeats of. Hoping it'll look a little like a peacock feather once it's plied.
Also, a picture of the river from a few days ago. My phone sucks, but the view was gorgeous in person. Think i might try to paint it later, although...all of my oil paints spent the last 8 months outside in the greenhouse, so they may be unusable. We'll see though.

The words are stuck again, so I’m grabbing another WIP to help with the rough draft of something that got waylaid by a bunch of photographs that were flying around onhere. (IYKYK)
Re: this sock. I often make things that no one will see but me, just to tickle my own fancy. Just for the process of making the thing. The process of making a thing is figuring it out, seeing how it’s made, maybe tinkering with it. Customizing.
(Bespoke Socks are a Thing. Trust me.)
I don’t know what delights me more: The butterflies or that sweet little braid just under the cuff. Or maybe it’s the indie dyed yarn. I mean look at how active that blue is. And that pink to purple? I laughed the first time I saw it, because it’s kind of ridiculous. I’d never wear anything that bright…except on my feet…or under everything. But…
What does this have to do with Writing?
Everything.

Stumbled on a weird website for a work thing. With no other context, what is your response when you hear this phrase:
Context: this is a phrase used by the organization that founded March 18th as “Global Recycling Day”, on a page introducing their position that recycling/recycled materials should be thought of as the Seventh Natural Resource.
The six natural resources that they claim “we” tend to think of as the most important are: water, air, oil, natural gas, coal, and minerals.
#recycling#poll#natural resources#I really feel like right after air and water comes plant and animal life???#humanity was around for a long time without doing much with any of the bottom two thirds of that list#what about like. clay. or metal? any metal?#unless both of those are considered minerals? I don’t know what a mineral is#I don’t necessarily disagree with what they’re trying to do by framing recycling as a resource we could be taking better advantage of#but I feel like they’ve made up a framework to go along with it so that they can have a catchy ‘seventh resource’ tag#instead of just going ‘hey we could think of this differently’ or putting any work into thinking of a different catchy name that makes sense#maybe I’m wrong. maybe everyone else on tumblr is going around like ‘i tend to think of the mitochondria as the powerhouse of the cell and a#also of six natural resources as the most important ones’#but. that’s what polls are for#just say like ‘the earth has lots of natural resources that help us and also we’ve created a __ resource for ourselves: recyclables’#__ can be something to replace natural. not manmade but like. anthrop-something maybe. you get the point.#they also on a different page said that recycling is ‘the front line in the war on climate change’ which like#i so fundamentally don’t see eye to eye with this mindset that leads you to think everything is a war on something else#also. strong language from a site that’s just saying ‘recycling is good for the economy’ and not promoting violence against the people respo#responsible for climate change denialism in government and corporate policy etc#‘women sitting at home knitting socks for refugees were on the front lines of WWI’ like. it’s important. it’s important and it’s taking care#of each other. but it’s not a war. it’s a totally different thing. your analogy is bad and your assumptions are unsound.#mine
