Narumayo Week 2022 Day 5

Have I been thinking about this AU for over a whole year? ...Anyway.

Prompt: Family

…Where am I?

She doesn’t know. She feels tired and weak. Grating noise fills her ears, and she wants it to stop. She blindly moves her hands, searching through touch alone, and immediately, the noise worsens. Then, voices join in, calling for help. And at last, she hears her name.

Mia Fey opens her eyes.

It’s only for an instant, before sleep pulls her under again. But at the foot of her hospital bed, she sees a bright blue jacket.

By the time she recovers, the case has ended. Redd White will be in prison for attempting to murder her, an attempt that would’ve been successful if Phoenix hadn’t returned to the office. And the scumbag had the audacity to incriminate Maya. Her little sister’s had an ordeal, but nevertheless, she’s there to escort Mia out of the hospital. Her smile almost makes Mia forget her renewed worry about a different patient.

“I’m fine, Sis. Phoenix defended me in court.”

“Did he? I’ll have to thank him tonight.”

The party is only comprised of the three of them, plus Charley. They feast on gourmet burgers, and Mia receives the entire story from Phoenix and Maya. She’s listening but she also notices how comfortable they are around each other. She thought they’d get along, and she might have underestimated how well. Already, it’s like they’ve been friends for years.

Unfortunately, it’s the sole break they have for months. With the takedown, the office is in high demand. Mia is soon swamped with cases, and while she can always set aside a minute or two, Phoenix has to step up in his responsibilities.

Maya volunteers to assist him. “I can back him up! Don’t worry, two pairs of eyes are better than one.”

Ultimately, Mia doesn’t argue. Her sister deserves to explore the city like a normal teenager, to learn what life is like outside spiritual training. “Look after her, Phoenix.”

“Of course, Chief.”

It’s not until after Christmas and the unearthing of the DL-6 case, that she begins to suspect something. Maya’s tearful at the train station, but her mood lifts once Phoenix reminds her of the vital evidence she uncovered. And Mia notices that her face is noticeably pinker when they hug goodbye.

After enough of Maya’s calls mentioning Nick, Mia decides it’s time to broach the subject. “So…Phoenix.”

He visibly gulps. “Sorry, Chief. I meant to clean the bathroom earlier-”

“What? No, never mind the bathroom. I wanted to talk to you about Maya.”

Immediately, he perks up. “Is she alright?”

Huh. Interesting. He’s been moping since Maya left, not motivated to take on new cases. “She’s doing well. In fact, I was planning to visit her this weekend, since it’s only an hour by train. Do you want to come with me?”

“Sure! Wait…only an hour by train?”

“That’s right.” She smiles. “So, we can visit any time.”

Maya’s thrilled to hear they’re both coming, and in the background of her phone call, there’s rustling and thumping. “Oh, I have to clean my room! Nick will totally make fun of me.”

Mia can’t resist laughing. She’s way too obvious.

In Kurain Village, her guard is automatically up. Despite her presence, the elders stare at Phoenix, and when Maya cheerfully bounds out of the house, Mia distracts the group of old women. It’s also embarrassing that they assume she and Phoenix are a couple.

“He’s my subordinate.” She coolly says. “And a good friend to me and Maya. He saved us both.”

They may curl their lips and give nasty glares, but as long as Maya and Phoenix are happy, Mia doesn’t care. Maya provides an animated tour of the village, while he looks the best he has in weeks.

“Mystic Mia?”

The soft voice stops her and she turns to see her youngest cousin. Little Pearl, who’s sweet and kind and unlike the other women in her family. “Pearl, it’s been a while! You’ve gotten much taller. Goodness, you’ll outgrow me someday.”

Pearl gasps. “That’s not true, Mystic Mia! But it’s good to see you too. And, um, is that man Mystic Maya’s special someone?”

“…Special someone?”

She vigorously nods. “Mystic Maya talks about him all the time, that he’s brave like a knight in shining armor! And Mystic Maya is like a princess, so…so…!”

“Well,” Mia stretches out the word, buying time. “I don’t think we’ve reached that part of the fairy tale yet. In the meantime, let’s keep it to ourselves.”

“Okay!” Pearl is delighted to share a secret, and Mia smiles at her.

Then, she happens to glance up at the Fey house and a curtain falls, obscuring a silhouette. A foreboding chill pricks at her skin; out of habit, her fingers grasp for her own magatama.

One disastrous channeling later, Mia isn’t surprised when her aunt goes to prison, and honestly, that makes her sad. But she takes custody of Pearl, and Maya temporarily moves in with them.

“Phoenix is a good guy.” Mia offhandedly remarks, when Pearl is out of earshot. “He’s loyal, brave, funny. And a defense attorney, which is always a plus.”

“What?!” Maya squeaks. “Sis, it really isn’t like that. He doesn’t see me as more than his assistant.”

“Oh my God.” She rolls her eyes. “He broke down a solid door for you! And didn’t you two just go to the circus?”

“With Pearl! It wasn’t a date!”

“Were you hoping it was a date?”

“Ugh, this is so embarrassing!” Belying her eighteen years, she clamps her hands over her ears and runs off.

Not long after, Mia does regret teasing her. All she wants is her sister to be safe and alive. She jumps every time the walkie-talkie hisses, and Phoenix isn’t any better. He yells Maya’s name into the receiver, without fail every time. And when Maya is finally released, Mia breaks down into sobs. She embraces her little sister in the lobby, overcome with emotion.

“Maya!” Phoenix emerges from the courtroom, and he heads straight for her. He lifts her off her feet, and when he sets her down, he holds her face with such tenderness.

Before Mia can ask, she gets a call from the hospital.

The subsequent years are bittersweet, of trials and triumphs. Phoenix nearly loses his badge, not to the point of disbarment, but his confidence is shaken until he helps a new attorney. His adopted daughter, Trucy, is a sweetheart who adores Maya. Her training has escalated, necessitating a stay in Khura’in, and the transition is hard at first before she grows into her role as a full-fledged spirit medium. Pearl has returned to the village, her own training guided by Misty. Their reunion had been another close call with death, but at last, their family is whole.

As for Mia, she’s continued to head the Fey and Co. Law Offices, but now as a wife and mother. Too aware of the fragility of life, she and Diego hadn’t wasted any more time. Their son had arrived four years after their wedding, and he’s certainly kept them on their toes.

She’s just finished giving Marco his lunch, when Phoenix enters the office. “Hey, Chief. Has Maya called yet?”

“No, but she should soon. Why do you ask?”

“What do you mean?”

“Are you serious?” She deadpans. “You’ve been talking almost every day since she left. You should just fly over there and ask her out yourself.”

“Wait, what?!”

“I’m not blind. I’ve watched over you two for the past ten years, it’s honestly annoying at this point. And it’s not just me. Pearl is still your biggest supporter, Mom’s ready to give her blessing whenever, and even Diego’s mentioned you’re taking forever. Do you know how many times Trucy’s brought up to me that she wants Maya to be her mom?”

Stunned, he slowly replies. “Maya and I are friends. It’s not like,” He’s flustered, rubbing the nape of his neck. “I mean, she can do better.”

It’s been a long time but she’s rendered speechless. Then, the phone rings and Phoenix eagerly picks up. “Hey, Maya.” If only he could see his expression, he’s completely in love with her.

“Oh my God.” Mia mutters, and as dignified as she can be with a toddler on her hip, she marches off.

Wow! I have so many friends! I hope I don't forget anyone...

((Remembering that I'm going to talk about those with whom Kauze had the most contact or had a great first interaction (several reblogs in one RP ask), after all it wouldn't make sense for him to talk about someone who never spoke to him, or who only made a single reblog on RP, I hope you understand, and he also doesn't remember the new characters that were introduced to him in the mini event I'm doing))

@ruki--mukami is the best! He always takes care of me, helps me when I need it and always teaches me many things, for me he is the best vampire there is! Among the Mukamis and Sakamakis he is my favorite! Because he was never scary or mean to me! I love him and he is one of my best friends in the world!

@princesscrownprince Kai and Lukas are really nice to me! I miss them, but adults are pretty busy aren't they? I hope they take a little vacation and come see me! I love the way Lukas dresses and I'll never forget what he told me when I told him I wanted to be a hero! Oh! Oh! And Kai is so amazing! I love how he is always willing to play with me and take care of me! I hope to make them proud when I grow up.

@dj-diabolik-fan Mystic is awesome too! He always helps me when I need it, like a big brother, I love it when he explains something about the founders to me so I can get to know a little more about myself, he was one of the first people I met so he is also one of my favorites ! Oh! And about Kazuha... She's so amazing, like a perfect person! I also want to be perfect when I grow up! But I have to admit she's a little scary...

@the-timeless-founder I love Saeclus! He is very amazing! Apart from that he also takes great care of me, besides he is a founder! I feel like I can tell him anything, because he would super understand me! He seems to be very powerful even more than Carla and Shin! I hope that one day Saeclus can be my sensei and teach me a lot!

@fruit-of-infidelity Ryuuto is awesome too! I don't talk to him much, because he always seems to be very busy, other than that Karlheinz can show up at any time and that's pretty scary! But other than that, I really like Ryuuto because he is a great artist and he helped me paint a picture for Carla, since I met him, my drawings have improved a lot! And that's thanks to him! I hope to get a lot closer to him over time!

@iricathel I really like Irina! She is very kind! But I feel a little embarrassed talking to girls... That's why I almost never talk to her... Oh! Oh! But she has a really nice brother about my age! I hope to continue being close to her and making friends with her brother!

@mukami-kuron-mrsadisticcat Kuron is really cool! At first I was scared of him... But I think everything will work out and we'll become good friends! Oh! He's also very stylish and handsome, I think he's famous for something... But I don't follow these things very well! He's also very good at picking out gifts so soon I'll buy him something to make him like me even more! his only flaw is that he likes Kou! yuck!

Kou (it's not a specific Kou, but my character was already "created" to hate Kou lol, it's no hate to anyone who has a Kou profile! 💕 ): Ew! yuck! How can I say something good about him?! He is very mean, fake and arrogant! He always ignores me and says bad things to me, I don't like it when he yells at me or says I'm stealing his place, because I would never want to be like him! He might as well tour the other side of the world!

@ask---shin---tsukinami I really like Shin! He was the first one who took me in and gave me a place to live! But I don't like it when he yells at me or doesn't let me make new friends...! I'm glad we finally got along and got it right! I love him and want to see him well, I miss him sometimes, maybe I will visit him one day!

Five Years of Mystic Tsukinami

This August it’ll be five years since I created Mystic’s blog. And since I’ve reached the 500 followers mark not long ago, I thought I’ll compile a few fun facts and others about the blog and how Mystic’s character developed through the years into the rampant, chaotic-horny, grinning Founder you all know today! ✨

Origins

I started this blog in August of 2018 thanks to the encouragement of a good friend and fellow Kino-lover, @munarisblog! I only interacted with the Hispanic community of DL’s fandom at the time, writing in Spanish all the time.

I’m not very sure when, but as friends started being less and less active, I turned to putting out content in English and getting myself out there by sending the first ask/starter to other blogs. Through which I acquired incredibly mutuals and people I very much consider friends today ✨

Designs

The first ever imagery of Mystic’s design I had to show for was manga-clips and Picrew depictions, as it was what everyone was doing back in the day.

The manga clips, I used even up to a few months ago, but the Picrew avatar is very, very old. So, if you recognize it: Congratulations, you’ve been in this hellhole for quite a while LMAO

I later received the opportunity to obtain a proper sprite for Mystic! It being made for me by the talented @/lavendel081 ✨

I believe these were introduced some time in 2018/2019. Don’t quote me on that, though. I’m not quite sure, but pretty confident it was very early on. I’m still greatly thankful to Lavendel for offering to make this sprite of Mystic for me back then.

Moving to the present, summer 2022, I got in contact with Lavendel once more in order to properly commission new sprites for Mystic. The finally product—which, fun fact, were coincidentally done by Mystic’s birthday on the dot lol—are the Mystic you interact with presently.

As for Mystic’s other forms, I’ve only shown his wolf form. Which I will present here in both their past and current versions—

I’m the future, I plan to make (at least) a sprite for Mystic’s owl form :D

Character Development

I was going to say I didn’t mean this as in dumping trauma on him, but that’s a lie lmao

In the beginning, Mystic was very much a flat character with very little interesting attributes to him, besides the fact he was an OC descendant of the Tsukinami. His personality was very much based on Shin’s back then, aside from a few aspects that would be considered extremely out of character today.

Early-Mystic used to be extremely shy and easily flustered, being (and forgive me for the wording lmao) a virgin who had no experience in love whatsoever. That is to say, Kino was his first-everything back in the day. Not to mention, he was your typical prince-boy that never had to lift a hand for why he wanted. That is to say, he was pretty whiny.

The current version of Mystic I have today is the abso-fucking-lutely opposite. Sleeps around, trauma based off past relationships, flirty, emotionally-unavailable, outgoing—you get it.

Not to mention, a lot of his backstory is based off the very vague notes I had of him during his early stages. Back then, I knew he was a prince, but truly had no clue where I was going with the Owl Clan and their lore. What you see today is the most detailed his backstory has ever been.

Routes appearances

Oh my god, I cringe just thinking about it. The very first version I wrote of Mystic’s LE route is very much what I described of his character during early-stages (refer to the inexperienced, easily flustered virgin fellow). It was a mess. He was so boringly weak, I could have made him a human and there (mostly) not had been much difference.

The Mystic I’ve depicted in his (in-progress) Dark Fate route is the kind of character Mystic is presently, and who is much like the canon that should be followed.

This post isn’t all that impressive (I’m still considering making something else that includes my followers/community), but I thought it fun to make something that could trace back to the very beginning. I’m really thankful for those that have been here for a long time, but also you guys that have just arrived months, or even weeks prior.

I’ve met incredibly writers and characters through Mystic, with whom I hope to be able to continue interacting with ^^

Sometimes Ace Attorney can be very annoying in the way it makes the characters explain things discovered earlier. It can feel so out of character

Like, why in the world would Miles re-explain to Phoenix that 17 years ago DL-6 happened? It’s not like he shouldn’t know! They already brought it up earlier in the same day. (Or if you didn’t do what I did on accident, it could have been brought up just a few moments ago.) And earlier Bikini also brought up DL-6 because of what happened to Mystic Misty, so Phoenix very much SHOULD know by now what happened 17 years ago

One of the most frustrating times this happened was when we witnessed Jean Armstrong talking to a mysterious lady and then we ask him about it and we get a flashback to the scene we JUST witnessed. Like, we hadn’t even left the room, it was literally two seconds ago, did we really need that flashback?

I understand that it’s supposed to be for people who started Ace Attorney out of order or for players who saved awhile ago and haven’t picked up the game in a bit and need a refresher of the events but still it can feel so out of place when you’re not one of those people.

Imagine if my next post was a monologue about how I created a post about the ways Ace Attorney inserts out of place flashbacks or narrative expositions. That’s essentially what this game does 😭

can I ask a question ? I hope this question of mine doesn't upset you because I don't intend to do so, I'm just asking out of curiosity. What's the reason why you make OC for ship boys when they all love Yui and have a girlfriend. Please don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with OC, by the way, I like all of them, but I want to know what is the purpose of this work. I've heard before that people make Oc to almost mirror their own personality with boys because not everyone is like Yui, but I see people like you make a character with the most similarity to Yui and instead of Yui, you ship her with your favorite boy. What's wrong with Yui shipping with Subaru? Because the character of both is similar. Is it because you hate Yui? Because your OC is exactly like Yui.And when I see that these two characters have so many similarities, but you even left your old favorite ship, Subaru and Yui, because of your OC, it makes me wonder what is the reason? Have you hated Yui like other people? Or is it just jealousy? Or maybe you don't want to see your favorite boy with someone, but as far as I know, your OC is different even with your own personality . Please let me tell you I don't mean to upset you . I'm just curious.

// Before answering this question, there's one thing I have to clarify for those who haven't been around on my blog long enough to hear me mention this in the past.

Sharon was not created to be a DL OC. I created Sharon way back in 2016 when I was in the Mystic Messenger community. Heck, I don't think I had even heard of Diabolik Lovers at this point. I picked up the game in 2017, didn't like it at first, banned it to the back of my shelf for 2-3 years and then picked it back up in 2019 for a second time and got hooked.

So the similarities Sharon bears with Yui in terms of personality and general demeanor do not stem from me wanting to 'replace' Yui with my own character, since Sharon had already been established and possessed these character traits long before I even knew Yui exists as a character.

I definitely will not deny that the two of them do share a lot of core personality traits such as kindness, compassion and patience. However, there are differences between the two as well. Sharon has deep-rooted feelings of self-hatred due to her blaming herself for her own parents' death. She tries to cover these dark feelings by being kind to those around her, but this raises the question whether her feelings are actually sincere or whether she's simply trying to make herself feel better. Yui may not be the most confident girl either, but she doesn't struggle with her self-image nearly as much as Sharon does.

This raises a second point, their backstory is different. Yui is a human with Cordelia's heart which makes her 'Eve'. Sharon is not 'Eve' and will never be. She was born from a human dad who hailed from a family of Vampire hunters and a mother with Vampire descendent (although not a Pureblood). Because the human genes are bigger in proportion, her Vampire nature has so far been suppressed and in the current timeline, she still believes herself to be 100% human.

Her parents reflect the concept of 'forbidden love', since her father was raised to condemn Vampires and see them as nothing but bloodthirsty monsters. However, they were able to overcome their differences, found love and even created new life. This is why Sharon's birth name is 'Nozomi', written with the character for 'hope'. She was their literally hope that one day, humans and Vampire would be able to co-exist in peace.

Now for the shipping part. The first boy I shipped with Sharon was Shuu, based on in-character interactions which took place on this blog. I still think the two of them match well together, bearing similar traumas in having lost someone incredibly dear to them and blaming themselves for their deaths. (Sharon's parents & Edgar respectively).

However, with Subaru being my favorite boy, I genuinely enjoy pairing my OC with him and drawing art of them. That being said, I do think their personalities match well. This is also where there is a key different with SubaYui. I do like Subaru x Yui as a ship even to this day but often times it feels very one-sided in regards to what they do for each other. Subaru is completely relient on Yui as she was the first person to show him genuine love and affection (which he never got from his mother).

I imagine the Subaron dynamic/development to be much more of a rocky road since Sharon is not nearly as mentally stable as Yui is. She struggles with similar issues to Subaru and just like it frustrates her how he calls himself a monster, he also grows agitated by how she will hide her true feelings behind a smile. This is actually what made Sharon fall for him in the first place. He didn't just welcome her kindness with open arms and abuse it, he actually got mad and called her out on her hypocricy. This is what eventually made her realize that she had to stop acting kind as a mere coping mechanism to mask her own pain.

I probably rambled on for way too long already but to summarize my response:

Do I hate Yui/Am I jealous of Yui? -> Nope! I love Yui. I have her as my avatar on my translation blog for a reason.

Do I simply not want to see my favorite boy with someone else? No. As you already pointed out, I don't see Sharon as 'me'. I wouldn't date any of the DL boys myself, honestly! Way too much drama!

What is the purpose of my OC? A personal passion project and comfort character. Sharon exists for me and not to please anyone else. If you don't like her, then don't follow this blog, it's as easy as that. I don't have to justify my character or my ships to anyone as long as I get a personal sense of enjoyment out of it.

Out-of-DL!Kazuha Headcanons

[Admin!Danny: OH, BOY! Prepare for this one, because there’s much more pain for Kazuha than Mystic. And her story changes a lot due to the lack of a father.]

ᴋᴀᴢᴜʜᴀ ʟᴀᴜʀᴇɴᴛ, ᴛʜᴇ ғᴏʀɢᴏᴛᴛᴇɴ ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇss

After Kazuha’s father dies of a mysterious and incurable illness—alongside his family (except his brother, who was killed in war)—the crowd turns to her mother, Elle Laurent, a powerful witch with blood connections to the royalty. They accuse her of having created this sickness, spiteful of the family’s treatment to her and her daughter.

The accusations, though untrue, created a violent crowd wanting to kill them both in retribution of Kazuha’s father’s family.

This forces Elle to run away with Kazuha and go into hiding for a long time. The luxurious life they knew under the care of their husband/father is left forgotten as they find themselves sleeping in slums and rundown, abandoned homes.

Elle had been kicked out of the status her parents had left for her in the family before they passed, due to having a child out of wedlock with a man “not fit” for her. So, after they were scared out by an angry mob threatening death for both, they really had nowhere to go.

From then on, Kazuha adopted her mother’s name: Laurent. She refused to let go of the name his father had given her. Making her: Kazuha Laurent. She does tend to use “Kassandra” as an alias when out in public.

Kazuha was decently young at the time this all went down, having the appearance of a kid midway down their teenager years.

By then, her entire personality had been built. Like always, she is poise, calm and collected, but a hothead. She does tend to think things through before acting—that’s how she was raised, after all—but will blow up without notice.

The kicker here being, Kazuha doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty now. She would still prefer not to, if given the option. But she will if she has to. And she will make it as enjoyable as possible for herself.

The more the mother and daughter pair venture through the Demon Realm, Kazuha learned of an underground kingdom directed by none other than that one maid who took care of her and then went on to become he uncle’s lover.

She sent a letter via one of the Familiars (who are basically the only companions they had after being chased out). After receiving a response, welcoming into the kingdom, the family reunited at last.

Kazuha is still the little girl DJ took care of and Elle is still the same friend she had all those years ago, but now they look battered. Their clothes are shabby and nothing like the fancy dresses they wore once in the past. They themselves are covered in grime from head to toe, setting to questions just when was the last time had a decent bath.

DJ demanded for answers as to how they ended up like this and Elle proceeded to answer, causing the Queen breakdown in tears out of pity for the two. At that moment, Kazuha saw something she hadn’t in a long time: her mother crying, desperately clinging to her old friend.

The cousins relationship is rocky as always. They have good and bad days—much like siblings—but the fact that they would give their lives for the other has never changed.

Kazuha takes care of correspondence in the castle and sorts it out for the queen and king. All to have something to do as a thanks for taking them in. Now she didn’t have to worry about hers or her mother’s safety every time they laid to sleep. She didn’t have to worry about what they would eat or how they could get it.

I’m still not sure if she will start those business of bounty hunter (where she would hire Mystic to work for her), but it’s very possibly that I make it happen.

The Report Card – Fantasy High: The Seven Ep 2

The Girls Are Fighting!!!

We return to Aguefort Adventuring Academy where the man himself has just told the Seven Maidens that their party is being split up which they are NOT having even though it doesn’t seem to be a malicious plot so much as the fact that Danielle, Ostentatia, and Zelda are Juniors while the other four are graduating Seniors. Antiope casts Hunter’s Mark on Aguefort, Penny pleads, Katja threatens (well, “threatens”; she walks up menacingly and then says that he can’t do this because it’s the only group of friends she’s ever had and it’s heartbreaking like all of her non-hilarious dialogue is).

Aguefort understands that it sucks and has no respect for rules but says it’s out of his hands. Sam clocks that he’s hiding something (along with the fact that he seems to know about something going on with Antiope and Penny which we know is their respective internship/apprenticeship offers) and calls him out, hitting him with a Lightning Lure to drag his ass back when he tries to turn into a bat and escape out the window. She’s unhinged and I love it.

So does Aguefort who decides to let them in on some school secrets, leaving a decoy while he leads them all to the super secret part of the forbidden library which is bondage themed because sure. Also, Ostentatia is topless for this also because sure. He does a lot of pomp and circumstance to summon a book which Yelle flatly says better not just be the syllabus and it isn’t but she’s close. It’s the bylaws of the school district which he has summoned for the guidelines on the special, magical thing the girls can get so they can graduate together…

Their GEDS!!!!! Trés mystical.

Basically what they need to do is complete a level A, B, or C quest together (which Antiope knows are like the top 3 highest difficulty quests--they go from A-F) and get signoff from the superintendent. But the superintendent has been missing for 12 years and there can’t be a new one until she’s dead (which she isn’t or else they’d be able to appoint a new one). Her name is Tectonya Karkovnya (who I will be calling TK) and Aguefort calls her, “chaotic and impossible to predict,” which coming from him is como se dice, troubling.

Sam pulls out her mirror to do a little snooping on TK’s past and sees that she’s a coppery, earth genasi woman. She also sees her talking to Aguefort and saying that the magic of consciousness is far superior to his beloved chronomancy. Then the scene shifts to show her getting more and more worried as she got deeper into her studies and then going to a dwarven holy site in the Mountains of Chaos with some kind of shadow figure following her.

Penny gets photos of the super cursed bylaws and Arthur leaves since he very much is the principal of the school and has to do his job (ostensibly). With Aguefort gone, the girls discuss the proposition after conscripting a very reluctant Antiope to be their leader (Aabria hilariously improvises that a shaft of sunlight somehow comes down to illuminate her and she has to step out of the spotlight).

They discuss whether they want to do this GED quest or not and Zelda says she wants to but she wants to give anyone who has other stuff going on an out so they don’t feel beholden. Ostentatia immediately shoots back that Zelda is just saying that because she has plans with Gorgug. That brings down the mood and Sam, despite being a water genasi, fans the flames by saying that Gorgug has lots going on that doesn’t involve her so she shouldn’t be running back to him all the time.

Yelle tries to calm things down and says they should sleep on it but Sam and Ostentatia are taking this super personally and are offended that they’re even having this conversation. Penny accidentally lets slip that she has some kind of apprenticeship (she’s trying to keep it on the DL because it’s supposed to be a secret) and oh man it becomes a Whole Thing. They fight in the way that you do when everyone in the fight actually wants the same thing and cares deeply about each other but are in completely different headspaces which are making them lash out.

Penny, not wanting to be around the conflict, goes invisible. Zelda is suppressing going into a rage and says that maybe she should go be with Gorgug. At least he won’t yell at her. Yelle once again tries to cool things down and suggests they have a text thread where they can say if they’re in or out by the end of the night instead of hashing it out in the open. She’s accused of not being in and, in response, texts that she’s in. Ostentatia and Sam also immediately text that they’re in, which basically makes her “solution” entirely moot.

Zelda is finally fully fed up and leaves (Penny following invisibly). Katja also follows.

Antiope can tell that Sam is upset about something that’s not this but Sam brushes her off rudely and storms off (quite literally, causing storm clouds outside in her wake). Yelle goes after her. Ostentatia is left with Antiope.

Time for a string of very emotional mini scenes which I highly encourage you to watch because they are peak improv.

Zelda, Katja, (Invisible) Penny

Katja runs to find Zelda who is under a tree crying and asks if she’s OK. Zelda says that Sam and Ostentatia are so beautiful and confident and eloquent and she gets so tongue tied and useless when they disagree with her because she’s so timid. Zelda wants this so bad but she doesn’t want to feel like she’s forcing her friends to stay with her.

Katja, as we know, has major abandonment issues because of her constantly away dad (and prob her mom too) and she doesn’t want to be left behind again but she also doesn’t want her friends to factor her in so she tries to be stoic and says that the people you love have to want to stay. But with a 3, Zelda immediately clocks the emotion behind the words. Instead of calling her out, Zelda offers to listen to music with her.

Penny takes this opportunity to make herself known (which has got to be terrifying--unless you’re used to it and then it’s like same shit as usual from Ms. Luckstone) and Zelda goat jumps to grab her out of the tree she was crying in above them and tells her that she doesn’t have to go invisible every time there’s conflict. They all agree that they hate confrontation and Rehka gets the funniest lowkey line of the episodes: that she wouldn’t know what to do if they didn’t agree on that. We then cut to…

Ostentatia and Antiope

Where Izzy gets the high key funniest moment of the episode by transitioning in with a big, “You know I LOVE confrontation,” which breaks everyone at the table. But she says it as a preface to admitting that she may have been a bit of a bitch to Zelda. She plays coy for like a half second before she breaks down sobbing with Antiope catching her before she sinks fully to the floor. Antiope comforts her and admits that while she wants to stay with the party, she hates having options taken away from her as they have been her whole life effectively. She was honestly kind of relieved when she was trapped in the crystal because it meant all that pressure was gone for a bit. They affirm that they love each other then Ostentatia goes to apologize to Zelda.

Danielle and Sam

Yelle goes to talk to Sam (who she adorably calls “merbae”) and while Sam doesn’t wanna talk about it, Yelle says they don’t have to. She just wants to be there for her in whatever capacity she needs. She knows Sam loves her friends and would never hurt them on purpose so something must be wrong with her-- “History of abandonment?” Sam finishes, almost glibly. She’s tired of losing people. She doesn’t want to lose more. She doesn’t want things to change. Nature is change, Yelle says. Nature sucks, Sam says. Yelle is gonna pretend like she didn't hear that.

Sam feels bad that she snapped at Zelda and Yelle says that they’re all a family. Things will be alright. The storm clouds that Sam reflexively summoned peter out into a cool, refreshing mist.

Ostentatia and Zelda

Ostentatia goes to where Zelda and the girls are and full ass runs at her like they weren’t just fighting. After assuring her that she’s not there to fight she apologizes, saying she was a cow. Zelda says she honestly agrees with Ostentatia that she wants the group to stay together and wishes she could be bolder in non-rage settings. Ostentatia says that maybe if the Seniors leave they can still have a party and Penny vetos that even though, as Ostentatia says, it’s a pretty reasonable compromise. Anyway, they basically all go in a circle saying they love each other and it’s very sweet.

I’m serious, I can’t do these heart to hearts justice in this format, just go watch them for that emotional girl group goodness.

Anyway, outside of the main group, Antiope goes to talk to her sister Corsica who is currently teaching a class. Antiope does not give AF. She orders the students out and they scatter. Wouldn’t you?

Antiope wants advice. Should she stay with her party after flaming out of her last one? Should she take the internship and stay on the path her parents want her on? Corsica really feels for her. Antiope has had to struggle in a way that she and their brothers never did. She finally answers that she and her brothers are awesome and successful fighters but none of them have been able to do the scariest thing possible: disappoint their parents. They’re soldiers. They like it that way. They fall in line. But maybe Antiope isn’t a soldier. Maybe she’s a leader. She ordered those kids out of the room without thinking after all and they obeyed. It’s an extremely good speech and Antiope basically has chills, as do I.

I assume while this is happening or perhaps right before everyone goes home, Penny goes to see Jawbone (who has some spiffy new art--as did Gilear who cameoed early in the episode when Aguefort atomic wedgied him invisibly because sure) and talk about this uber difficult decision she had to make. Jawbone gets to the heart of the matter pretty quick. Penny is a high achiever who’s lived a life without choice. But now that she’s about to be off the rails for the time she’s freaking out. Penny sees the truth in the statement (after hilariously trying to solve his metaphor about an amusement park) and thanks him for the perspective. She then, in a very Fig move, tries to kiss him and Jawbone basically stiff arms her and breezes right past like it didn’t happen, showing her out. What a trooper that Jawbone.

Moving on to Katja. When she gets home she tries to call her dad who is unreachable on his hell mission. She leaves him a message saying that he should call her back when he can and she knows what she wants for her graduation present now. She wants her party to not break up. This breaks Brennan and me.

She then snoops arounds for info on TK. She sees letters of her dad trying to get her into Hudol. And she sees some stuff from the Ministry of Adventure, asking if he knew where TK was. But she doesn’t get anything else. At least, she doesn’t get anything else that’s helpful. She does however find a picture of her mom which makes her bolt to go talk to Cinnamon who prances for her to make her feel better. She joins in dancing, badly.

EDIT: I initially wrote that Katja’s mom was dead because that’s what I thought she said but @ennn said that in the Adventuring Party, Rekha said that her mom didn’t die, she left. Which is less dramatic in some ways but SO MUCH WORSE for abandonment issues so, yikes girl!

Yelle meanwhile goes home to talk to her unofficial third mom, Holly, who is the awakened tree under which her house is. Picture a Grandmother Willow situation from Pocahantas basically. Yelle talks about the conflict a bit and, as usual, ends up on a tangent about how the world is unfair and she has to speak for the voiceless. Holly is concerned for her (as are her other moms which I may have neglected to mention in the last recap). She asks Yelle if she can tell her something that might be painful. Yelle agrees. Holly says that Yelle is great and wonderful and kind but she spends so much time speaking for other people that she never speaks for herself. Her moms worry that there will come a day when she needs help and will have to ask for it without couching it in terms of the greater good and she won’t be able to.

Yelle really hopes she’s high when the time comes.

At her home, Ostentatia casts Commune With The City to see if TK has been around and she’s not there now but she can tell she has been (though there’s no indication on if that’s recently or not). On a 17 religion check she knows that there is a dwarven holy site in the mountains that matches Sam’s description from the mirror. She’s still avoiding her dad but when she prays for her spells, she asks for her dad to feel like himself again too.

Hey, what time is it? Let me check my watch.

Ah yes, it’s time for Sam to make some rash decisions.

She feels like she should text Zelda but doesn’t. Instead, she goes into Penelope’s room. And she takes out her mirror. And even though she’s expended the charge for today, she tries to make it show her Penelope.

OK, says Brennan. Sure. Hey, can you roll me a quick little Wisdom Save?

Haha, Sam’s in danger.

The mirror heats up as it’s pushed beyond its limits and Sam sees an image of a young Penelope with braces grabbing her hands and grinning and saying that they’ll be best friends. Then, the image shifts and she sees the Penelope of the present in her tattered prom queen dress and glass shard crown. Her eyeless, haunting, demon prom queen form, teeth razor sharp as her words.

“A call without a text,” she says. “Are you out of your mind?”

“You look better than you ever did alive,” Sam spits back.

It is a battle of the bitches right out of the gate. The girls are fighting part two if you will. They snipe at each other for a bit and Brennan has Sam roll insight into herself. On a 19, Sephie says that’s not enough for Sam to get a read on herself (yikes girl) so she doesn’t understand that this fight can only ruin her because while Penelope enjoys causing people pain, Sam doesn’t.

They both get in some very choice barbs but when Penelope tries to entice her into making a devilish pact and disparages her new party, Sam does the mic drop of the century by telling her that her parents are divorcing and hanging up. The entire table LOSES THEIR MIND. It is like a real life representation of one of those Draw The Squad memes. Everyone brandishes their fans in a salute to that truly epic conversation ender.

As the night draws to a close, Brennan asks the girls who haven’t responded to the text chain yet if they respond. Katja texts that she’s in. Zelda texts Antiope and Penny that she’s not going to text whether she’s in or out until they respond because she doesn’t want it to feel like a 5 on 2 dogpile.

Antiope and Penny call then text, then call, then text, then call each other to discuss what they should do and also hype each other up because with all the drama, they didn’t really get to celebrate their opportunities. Penny tries to downplay her thing and insinuates that it wouldn’t be a big loss if she wasn’t in the group anymore and Antiope shuts that down immediately. You’re the last thing so many people see before they die Penny! That’s so cool!

They both decide to text that they’re abstaining from voting for now and go to bed.

The next day, Antiope gets up and sees that her party’s schedule has been cleared for the next two weeks by the school for quest reasons. She tells her dad she wants to talk to Charity Blythe (the woman at the Ministry of Adventure she needs to talk do) and he sets up a no pressure (but actually tons of pressure) meeting with her before turning her 5 mile run into a 12 mile run because she is a Jones and 5 mile runs are for Amateurs.

Ant texts the rest of the Maidens that this meeting is happening so they can maybe get some quest info from Charity and Ostentatia has in the meantime texted (after the 2 abstains) that she will be going for the GED regardless and anyone who wants to join can. Of course, there was never any reason to NOT go for it (besides the danger which they obv don’t care about) and getting it doesn’t mean any doors are closed to them. It’s just that emotions are running so high they can’t fully seem to see that (or at least some members can’t).

Ant doesn’t have the clearance to meet at Charity’s office so they meet at the Museum of Adventuring instead. In it happens to be the skeleton of Kalvaxus who they killed (if you don’t remember, the Bad Kids killed him first and then he was resurrected so the Maidens could also kill him for catharsis reasons). Tensions are still super high as evidenced by Sam’s snide abstention comment to Penny and Ant and then by her TRYING TO LIGHTNING BOLT THE DRAGON SKELETON TO DESTROY IT.

GIRL.

That doesn't happen though because she’s Counterspelled by Charity Blythe who walks in, surprised to see that Antiope brought her whole party. Antiope says they were just leaving but Charity can sense shenanigans when she sees them and says if they’re gonna spy on the conversation they might as well stay for it which they of course do.

She gives Antiope a rundown of the internship: 1 year commitment with a possibility to expand to 2-3 years. Stipend. She’d have to live in Bastion City.

Katja remembers that her dad was talking to the Ministry of Adventure in the letters she found and asks Charity about it. Charity says they were asking him about TK’s whereabouts because he was friends with her. On that, Yelle casts Detect Thoughts with a Stealth roll of 17 (we see on a secret Box of Doom roll that Charity got a 26 to see her cast it). Anyway, she sees that TK took some object with her when she disappeared (which she later sees is a crystal screen with a map seemingly marking quest locations from A-F) and of course the fact that Charity knows this. Yelle shares this info with everyone as Antiope walks off with Charity to talk further. Katja suggests to the group that maybe Ant should take the internship to get more info for their quest. While she’s talking to Charity, Ant feels the hairs on the back of her neck stand up.

See looks up and sees a figure with blood red lips look at her and disappear.

Yikes! Combat time baybee!

Superlatives

Danielle: Most Likely to Talk Her Way Out of a Hostage Situation

While, like her mothers, I am slightly concerned that Danielle is the type to set fire to herself to make sure others are warm, I also very much love her chill, warm, encouraging vibes. For those of you coming off of MisMag, she is like vibing at the same wavelength as Whitney Jammer but with the intensity turned all the way down. Danielle encouraging Sam honestly gave me like second hand calm. Excellent vibes.

Random Thoughts

If you’re wondering how long it took for it to come up that Aguefort banged a phoenix, the answer is 12 minutes.

The concept of phoenix chlamydia is the definition of thanks, I hate it.

Aguefort saying that TK is a crazy person could literally mean anything tbh. It could mean she is the most batshit person on the planet or it could mean she’s totally normal and just kinda bugs him. Literally no way to tell.

Someone (I think Rekha?) mentioned that the cursed bylaws book is copper and so is TK. Idk if that’s relevant but thought I’d flag it anyway.

We learn in this episode that the friendship bracelets Penny made them last week let them track each other and see each other even if one of the in knocked out (which is what gives it utility outside of what their crystals can already do).

We learn in this episode that Skullcleaver Elementary School is actually named after Katja’s family.

Nothing like the fear you feel when a DM gives you what you wanted even on a failure. And on that note...

Sam, I wish you a very happy Please Go To Therapy. Please girl.

This episode was such an emotional roller coaster. I deeply empathize with the horrible feeling that your friends have stuff going on and you don’t and you’re going to be left behind. It’s so rough to see everyone hurting and lashing out (or in the case of Yelle for instance, trying and failing to diffuse the situation). But it’s so nice to see everyone trying to be there for each other and apologizing and affirming that they love each other (from Antiope saying that she would kill and die for any of them to Danielle defusing the ticking timebomb that is Sam). The players really get the cadence of how teenage girl friendship works and it’s such a treat to watch.

“Did we ruin your life?”

Do you think ep 7 of The Seven is gonna be when everything pops off? As a DM I wouldn’t be able to resist that.

Penny’s response to being told that she can’t take every path is, “You can with chronomancy” which isn’t a bad point.

Rekha is the Zac of The Seven which is to say low key the funniest person on the planet. Her saying she was so scared that she wasn’t gonna be told “I love you” during that scene was so funny. Her comic timing is impeccable.

Katja fainting at the end of the “I love you” session after Penny says she loves her and Cinnamon.

I love the table ambient whisper of, “LCAB” under Antiope’s scene with Corsica.

I really felt for Zelda in this episode. Like, I felt for everyone but especially her, being the quiet one with all this yelling happening. When she was talking about how much she hates to have to fight with Sam/O my heart really broke for her. I’m so glad she got all her hugs in after that.

For your AMA, are there any female authors whose writing and way of thinking you consider to be in the spirit of the Inkings, especially if they are their contemporaries? I personally think Elizabeth Goudge and Dorothy L. Sayers, but can't really think of others.

Well, first of all, I'd like to query the assumption that there is such a straightforward thing as "the spirit of the Inklings." Taking Lewis, Tolkien, and Williams as the key members, here (sorry, Owen Barfield et al), I see them as having significantly different approaches and priorities despite shared interests in language, literature, and philosophy. I generally associate DLS with them, mentally, and I certainly agree that she shares their key appreciation of absurdity and also a sense of high seriousness (and playfulness) in intellectual labor. Personally, I find Goudge treacly, but I know we disagree on that.

With this prolegomenon, I would say:

Barbara Pym, who shares with Lewis and Tolkien an appreciation of food as a way of facilitating human connection, a very sharp sense of humor, and, particularly with Lewis, a poignant awareness of how even the highest ideals and greatest purposes often get sidetracked into debates about e.g. who is doing the altar flowers.

Both Charlotte and Anne Brontë, who both have rather unconventional approaches to a historically conventional church, a belief in the spirituality of nature, and in the case of Charlotte, a sense of mysticism.

Rumer Godden, who writes poignantly about vocation and how it complicates individual relationships and is lived out in community (I'm thinking particularly of Tolkien on this point.)

Muriel Spark shares many of the same concerns, I think, though her writing, like Pym's, is very firmly rooted in the quotidian. Memento Mori might be a good starting place, but The Girls of Slender Means and A Far Cry from Kensington also come to mind.

Iris Murdoch, perhaps most intensely, who writes passionately and often with melancholy and often with satirical wit about changing British society (Lewis), and about spirituality and vocation and what it means to discover, with astonishment, the reality of other people and their emotional/intellectual lives.

Jeanette Winterson. I spent some time thinking: who comes closest to Charles Williams' ecstatic, often obscure, incandescently hopeful work and Winterson is the answer I came up with. I surprised myself, but I stand by it.

I have only recently got into the ace attorney fandom, and this story was the first story I read, and I feel spoiled! I absolutely loved every chapter, so I'm gonna word vomit here and tell you everything I love about this!

Considering the fact that nick didn't have any prominent figure in his life, it makes sense that he would look up to gregory so much

THE RELATIONSHIP THAT MIA AND NICK HAD WAS PRECIOUS AND DESERVES MORE THAN WHAT THE FANDOM GIVES THEM

"Nobody believed him, nobody but Mia" Maya is what Phoenix is to Mia and I adore that

Also the first AA game felt unnatural in the sense of how seemingly unaffected Phoenix seemed at Mia's murder so I'm really glad you wrote it this way

Also taking a minute to appreciate the pacing! Rarely do I ever come across an author who just hits that sweet spot of perfect pacing and you did! so thank you!

Alright so here are a few thoughts that I felt capcom needed to do which you did for us!

no. 1 - Address the trauma phoenix faced with not only dahlia but also with mia's death

no. 2 - Actually fucking flesh out a good relationship dynamic between larry and phoenix

no. 3 - actually! have! phoenix! be hurt! in bridge to turnabout! istg my man would not have dropped from a burning bridge to a freezing river only to have a cold

ok so I have a LOT of feelings for bridge to turnabout and HOO BOY BUCKLE UP

So I always thought that in this fic, miles must have felt fucking awful! I mean he very clearly hates who he was and what that has led to but that must have been doubled over with this case! Phoenix would have died if not for mia and it would have been indirectly miles's fault. I think about that alot

Like he said that he very much regrets whatever he did as bratworth in the phone call with gumshoe but i don't think he anticipated this. poor edgeworth

Also I think this was the final nail in the coffin for miles. Phoenix forgave him, after all the fucked up shit miles did, and that made that man go "how is this guy so fucking compassionate awwwww shit I'm in fucking love with this idiotic brave man".

my main thoughts were "holy shit phoenix must have been feeling awful." like to learn that you were in love with a person who turned out to be a murderer but then not a murderer cuz everything you felt about that was real and just...... it must have hurt. He never fell in love with dahlia. it was iris, always. and WHAT ABOUT MILES DURING THIS!!! Like to learn that the man you love was falsely led to believe that he was in love with a person he rarely met and then learn that his ex who is not murderous might still be in love with him because "that was real. that part was real." like damn. people just gloss over this

also I feel terrible for iris F in the chat for iris lads.

Dahlia literally haunting that courtroom scene. I felt mia's power. I felt her desperation. I felt everything and I am once again in awe of the absolute power your writing holds.

you know what constantly amazes me? your ability to change tones so effortlessly. When writing from edgey's pov, the language is sophisticated. precise. when writing from pearly's pov your language is simplistic, child-like. from phoenix's pov it's natural. grounded
