Kyle comforts you after you get stood up on a date

TW for some light angst, being stood up, swearing

“You look amazing.” Kyle commented from his spot on your bed. Taking in your outfit as you smiled at him from in the mirror.

“Hope so, I'm nervous. I need this to go well.” You sighed, rubbing your palms over your thighs as you turned to face your best friend. Wiggling your shoulders as he chuckled, standing up and wrapping an arm around your shoulders. Leading you toward the front foyer.

“Now, if you need anything, you give good ol’ Kyle a call. A ride, an escape, an alibi, or a pep talk. I'm a phone call away.” He explained, releasing you momentarily so you could put your shoes and jacket on. “You look drop dead gorgeous. Nothing to worry about.”

Smiling widely, you pulled the man into a tight hug. Thanking him before walking out the door, hands shaking as you walked to the restaurant. 

Tears poured down your cheeks as you walked home. Shoulders slumped forward as you wiped your face, inhaling deeply to keep from sobbing. 

You felt like a fool.

Silently stepping through the threshold, you heard Kyle laughing in the otherwise silent livingroom. Signaling that he was playing online with his friends.

“One sec, mates. Gotta see how date night went, I'll be back on shortly.” You grimaced at his words, squeezing your eyes closed as you slumped on the couch beside him. “So, when are you and Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome going out again?”

Kyle's demeanor shifted when he saw the tracks of tears covering your cheeks. Shoulders now tense as a frown pulled on his mouth.

“What happened?” He asked bluntly. Waiting quietly as you shook your head, sniffling as you finally made eye contact.

“He was so handsome and charming when we met.” You sniffled, shaking your head as your frown deepened. “I just don't know what I did wrong. He didn't even show up tonight.”

You felt the couch beside your shift, as your best friend was now up. Walking into the kitchen with heavy foot falls. Leaving you to cry on the couch, wondering why you just couldn't find a romantic connection with anyone. 

Kyle returned a moment later, placing a large bowl of ice cream on the table in front of you before returning to his seat. Both of you eating in silence for a minute before he spoke up.

“You know what, fuck that. Charming is overrated. You know who was charming? Ted Bundy.” Kyle scoffed, flicking his spoon.

“Ted Bundy is a whole ass serial killer. If you ask me, you dodged a bullet.” He continued, shifting so his body was facing you.

“Kyle!” You snorted, wiping your cheeks once more as he stood. Bowl disregarded on the table as he began pacing the room.

“What vehicle does he drive?” The man asked, laughing after a second when you didn't answer. Too busy giggling and wiping your cheeks on the couch. “Really, what vehicle?”

“Does it matter?” You asked, voice distorted by your laughter. Stomach and cheeks both aching as he slammed his hands flat on the coffee table.

“Yes! It matters!” Kyle, holding back his own laughter now stared at you. Leaned over the table as he kept his expression serious.

Clearing his throat, he looked at you. The tactical stare as you once called it. “Now, we need to know what vehicle he drives. If it's a Volkswagen, we have a copy cat killer on the loose.”

A beat of silence passed between you two, before both of you broke into laughter.

“Kyle! That's horrible.” Fresh tears still poured down your cheeks, long forgotten now as your best friend continued to tease.

“Killing people is horrible!” He yelled back, “you dodging a bullet with Mr. Fred BundtPan isn't though. “

He watched as you fell back into the cushions, shoulders shaking with laughter. Silently, he once again made his way over to where you sat once the shaking transitioned from laughter to pain.

“I really liked him, he seemed like such a good guy.” You whispered, wiping your cheeks once more as you played the embarrassment of sitting alone at the resturaunt over in your head.

“I know. He's a daft cunt for giving you up.” Kyle whispered, pulling you into his side as he rested his cheek atop your head. Listening to you pour all your emotions out, not once letting you go.

“At least I didn't get murdered by Fred Bundtpan.” You whispered toward the end of the night. Now leaning fully against your best friend as grogginess overtook your mind.

“That's very true. Fuck Fred Bundtpan.” Kyle nodded, thumb rubbing circles in your forearm as you sleepily echoed the end of his sentence. A smile tugging at the corners of his lips when you fell asleep against him. 

“Fuck Mr. Bundtpan indeed.” Kyle whispered into the dark. Wondering how mindless a man would have to be to give you of all people up.

A mistake he wouldn't be caught dead doing.

Audio Drama Sunday - 26th November

Happy Audio Drama Sunday! I’ve had SUCH a good week of listening this week. I love it when you find a new show and it’s exactly what you didn’t even know you were looking for! Here’s what I listened to this week! 

🧳 Travelling Light by @monstrousproductions (3) Oh MAN, I loved this episode. I think my wife was ever so slightly concerned when I came home singing about seeing bees in the arse end of November, but what a fantastic way to world-build! I’m looking forward to finding out more about the lovely-seeming alien with the translator issues and beautiful embroidery!!

🤴 InCo by @itmeblog (S2 27-31) Breaking and entering is so overrated. Breaking and EXITING is where it’s really at. I am disturbed by Nova’s findings at the GU HQ and I hope that little explosion destroys everything it needs to. 

🏛 @the-mistholme-museum TRANSCEND oh what a cool exhibit this episode! I was left thinking about this little red pencil for long after listening! And they made it to the beach!! I actually love the head of retrieval too much for him to slip into the hivemind - I hope they both get out of there!

🌨️  @thewhitevault (3) hhhhhh oh my god. These guys are just truly awful, I really hope Iffy’s plan to outsmart them works. I’m still trying to figure out how the parallel stories are going to piece together but I know it’s going to be so satisfying when it clicks! 

❤️‍🔥 The Love Talker (4) This show is DARK, man. There was one particular scene this week that had me trying to recoil from my own headphones (it was not successful) and I can’t stop thinking about it and feeling sick. But, hey, if you’re looking for an actually nasty horror to get you through this cold winter, The Love Talker might be for you. 

🌹@desperado-podcast My new love!!!! I was looking for something with a good backlog of episodes after finishing W359 and remembered how much I loved the @levianpod pilot so figured I would check out another show by the same creator and I’m so glad I did!! I’m on episode 12 and I’m absolutely in love with Desperado. The characters feel so real and their banter is so fun! It's so interesting to learn more about magic systems from a range of cultures as well. I’m so invested and I can’t wait to listen to more!!

I’m off to listen to more Desperado, have a good week! 👋

7. one thing i would change in canon: Oh man. There are...many things, lmao. The clear and obvious one is having Talanah join the base (as we now know was the original intention [rolling_in_the_deep.mp3]). But since that one is a given--completely toss the Zeniths out of HFW. Ground the narrative conflict in gathering the subfunctions, the collapsing biosphere, and Regalla's rebellion instead. Bring GAIA back only at the very end. Save the Zeniths for the major H3 antagonist instead, negating the need for Nemesis as the Bigger Fish. How absolutely baller would it have been if the Beta reveal came as a post-credits stinger instead? (Gerard's voice: "Are you ready to finally make yourself useful, Beta?" and then a camera pan over the face of a Sobeck clone, GOD)

8. something canon did right: The entirety of "Deep Secrets of the Earth" in HZD was a masterclass in storytelling. Every part of exploring PZD HQ was remarkable. The datapoints, the juxtaposition of "The Bad News" with "The Good News," the latter of which as the culminating reveal of the mystery that's been building throughout the entire narrative--it's pretty much perfection.

9. a thing i'm proud of creating for the fandom PLEASE BRAG ABOUT YOURSELF I WANT TO SEE/READ YOUR ART: may I present to y'all my AO3 trashpile

10. a character who is perfect to me (wouldn't change a thing): ALVA. My personal shining star amongst the HFW companions. I'm also contractually obligated to say Talanah here, even if I want to shake her by the shoulders sometimes (affectionate)

11. the character i relate to the most and why: This is a tough one. I see pieces of myself in a number of the characters, but I'm not sure if there's one that I'm like, yes, that is ME. I could prrooobably say Alva again? But it's not a definitely one-to-one.

12. character(-s) i hate the most and why: All the homies hate Ted Faro, that's for sure. But that's low-hanging fruit. So I'll give Amadis as well, though not for the seemingly-obvious reason--I cannot stand the sole purpose for which he was written, from the comic all the way through his weird unsatisfying ending in HFW. He's a repeated character with a repeated conflict that was already handled much more compellingly through Nil and is rendered useless and storyless by the end of Need to Know. Bringing him back in H3 would be the sorest mistake the narrative could make aside from a sacrificial ending for Aloy. He's just unneeded character bloat in an already-admittedly-bloated cast.

13. something i've learned from the fandom: You will make some of your very best friends here. Everyone is creative and hilarious and so smart. We all connect to the Horizon universe in a different way, and sharing your enthusiasm with others is what just makes the world feel even richer than what you could have imagined.

15. a song i strongly associate with my otp/favourite character: you're gonna make me pick ONE?? oh man, okay. so this changes by the day, and today I'll say Oceanator's "I Would Find You" is THEE Hawk and Thrush anthem.

🔥Character you think is overrated

This one is hard bc I don't know that I think any of them are overrated? Someone might reveal themselves to me as I + the people of the internet get further into the game tho!

❤️‍🩹Character who deserved better

Definitely Shadowheart. Seems to be a bit of an unpopular opinion maybe, but I much preferred early access Shadowheart to the rewritten version we got in the released game. I loved how prickly + stand offish she was, and that she felt like a real slow burn friendship/romance that you had to actively work to befriend in a way which respected her need for privacy + space. I knew that she had been rewritten bc (or in part bc) some people didn't like how "mean" she was, so they softened her character. As she is now, I think that she's far too soft. I think she gives up her secrets too easily (whereas before she guarded them with her life), trusts/befriends the PC too quickly (even when, in my case, she clearly disagrees with most, if not all, of my decisions), and is less "heavily guarded castle", more "open book" I truly believe that we have not been delivered the Shadowheart that we deserved and that Shadowheart has been robbed of her true prickly cat-like self </3 (don't get me wrong tho, I still love her. Just not as much comparatively to how I did before)

Cats are cliché. On top of overrated. There's a reason they are banned from HQ. Well, really ALL pets are banned from HQ, but that isn't the point here. They shed, they're needy, and they scratch everything in sight. Come to think of it, that's a bit familiar...

ANYWAY, to the more important topic at hand, LOVELESS! I am merely trying to educate the masses. Most of the poor scraps that come through these doors are sadly very lacking in a sense of taste. I'm trying to fill the blanks any way that I can. Please feel free to attend and make yourself known! My happy little entourage could always use more patrons of the Goddess. I aim to have a backup choir to set the mood, if Lazard will permit me. Whether that man throws me a bone for a change, dear reader, is EQUALLY infinite in mystery.

favourite boutique bluray you own? favourite 4K you own? what movie deserves a 4K the most? most overrated 4K? physical media pet-peeve?

My favourite, favourite boutique is the Criterion The New World bluray. I mean just look at it. The Tree of Life Criterion is in very similiar packaging but it's slightly thinner and is decorated by stills from the movie and not original artwork. The Tree of Life Criterion is also amongst my faves but this one is just the Top Dog.

My favourite 4K is the Lawrence of Arabia limited edition steelbook. It was my White Wale for so long as I got into the movie right after the steelbook went out of sale and I even remember seeing it being launched and thinking "oh wow that steelbook looks great and this is supposed to be one of those classic GOATs. Should I blind-buy it?" but then I was too money-sensible... But it is mine now! And even with the amount of hype and expectations I built up from a year of pining for it it didn't disappoint. It's the most beautiful 4K scan of one of the most beautiful movies ever made and I'm so glad I own it and get to watch it in quality that good!❤️

And the movie that most desperately needs a 4K release is a contemporary of LoA: Ben-Hur (1959). I don't understand why WB won't release a 4K when the film was scanned in 8K for the bluray release! They're sitting on a HQ scan of one of the most beautiful, epic, critically and commercially acclaimed movies of all time and they're satisfied with it not having a 4K?? Seeing how marvelous the LoA 4K looks made me thirst all the harder for a Ben-Hur 4K and more classic 70MM films on 4K in general. @ Warner Brothers get your house in order and give the people what they want!

I don't have any one specific 4K I'd call overrated but most modern movies I've watched on 4K have been very underwhelming... I think classic movies, shot on film and with different conventions and attitudes wrt: lighting, production design, effects, colour, etc etc show up much better on 4K than modern digital photography and all that entails do. They look better than their bluray counterparts, no doubt, but the only modern movie I've seen in 4K that really wow'ed me was Interstellar with it's full-screen IMAX scenes - whereas almost all classic movies I've seen of 4K has really blown my socks off.

As for physical media pet-peeves: double-stacking the 4K discs so they get scratched super easily, the slipcover lottery, 4K's that don't come with a standard bluray (like my Arrow Robocop 4K), how difficult and expensive it can be to find the movies I want when my taste is older and more niche cinema... And I was really pissed by the way the Avatar 4K's were sold. When Avatar: TWOW came out on physical they released the original Avatar on 4K as well, and I bought the TWOW 4K steelbook. Then a year later both Avatar and Avatar: TWOW get new collectors editition 4K steels with Dolby Vision and lots of extra special features?? That was low.

character I think is overrated: ohhh boy! to be honest, there's not one character whom I really believe to be overrated, perhaps due to my lesser involvement in hq fandom as I tend to just do my own thing lol. however, to give an answer, I do feel like oikawa/kageyama are a bit considered to be god-like (especially in comparison to other setters) when in fact both of them are still learning and growing just like every other character? I do love them but any idealization sometimes gets annoying to see

character I relate to the most: aaaaaaaaa um.. in highschool I was literally sugawara hahahha (co-captain in my sport, very loud, enocuragement punches, not the best/first pick in athleticism but part of the team etc.) but I also relate a lot to kinoshita as well as akaashi and also aran! i think i give off 'just a normal guy next to some cool people I get to spend my time with' vibes!

To top it off, Satam!Robotnik wasn't even much of a mad scientist. All he did was trick a dumbass king (not much of a feat) and then stole an invention from a legitimate scientist (the roboticizer) and used it to subject almost an entire planet to a Fate Worse Than Death. Even the Sally clone bot could very well have been a roboticized mobian.

Also, all he does on screen 99% of the time is sit on his arse at HQ and scream orders at his slave/nephew while waving his arms around like a dumbass.

He was just a screaming dumbass that didn't do anything of note other than look stereotypically evil ( Red eyes, black sclera, robot arm and Shoulder Pads of Doom, oh my!)

This is my exact reasoning for my conclusion that he ain't shit when it comes to Sonic villains and is extremely overrated.

this person on tik tok called hq overrated, which okay you’re entitled to your opinion but then when they said they stopped at episode 1…your opinion is no longer valid to me. 😭 just feel like you gotta watch at least maybe 5 episodes to pass judgement on an anime before saying it’s “overrated” which to me calling an anime overrated period don’t make sense considering that it’s over a billion people in the world and we are all not going to have the same anime taste. so something being overrated is projective (which in that tik tokker case it was because they admitted to not even liking sports anime/manga).

Random L x Reader

The room in HQ is quiet, Light’s staring at L, who is eating cake and staring at the cameras. Matsuda is out with Misa doing whatever it is Misa does. ‘Matsuda seems to like her more than Light does.’ I, however, am sitting on the uncomfortable desk chair with my legs resting on the desk in front of me and my laptop sitting on my lap, burning my leg. “No, no, no. Don’t do this to me.” I start to panic as some of the keys stop responding. It’s an old mac, but it’s been so reliable until now. My legs fall off the desk and I lean forward, putting my computer on it instead. “Come on, baby, don’t die on me!” I talk to it, hitting the unresponsive buttons, hoping they’ll start working again.

“What’s wrong?” Light asks and I restrain the urge to throw something at him. Laughter comes from next to him, not giggles or light chuckles, full on laughter. Following that, a loud thud echoes around the room as L falls off his chair from laughing so hard.

“The keys stopped responding. Ryuzaki! Stop laughing! That’s ru-ude.” I choke out through the frustration tears that start coming down my cheeks. He stops laughing when he hears me crying. ‘I can’t afford a new laptop and this one has so much on it that I can’t lose.’ My final option is to risk losing my current work and restart the device. I hold down the power button and pray it works. The screen turns on again and I press all the previously unresponsive keys, still nothing. “Come on, I love you, I love you, don’t give up on me yet.” Finally, after thirty seconds of just pressing every key, they all start working again and I sigh in relief.

“Hmm. So your solution to it not working is to slam the keyboard and tell it you love it?” Ryuzaki put his thumb to his lip, staring at me as if I were the weird one while he’s still sitting on the floor. “How would that help it?” “I don’t know, but it did. Little shit of a thing gave me a heart attack doing that.” Light gives me a pointed look that tells me exactly what he thinks of my comment. “Don’t look at me like that, you two. I have a lot of stuff on here that if I lose, I will lose for good.” The screen of my laptop turns off in that moment. I press the power button a couple times, but it doesn’t turn back on. I slide off the chair and onto my knees, trying not to stress-cry again.

“Jesus christ, buy a new laptop! You’re not poor, you’re just cheap.” Light yells, I know he’s joking though by the slight smile. Pulling myself off the floor, I walk over to help Ryuzaki up since he seems to have no intention of getting up himself. I reach my hand down to him and he takes it with his cuffed hand and I pull him up. ‘I’ve never noticed how tall he is before. He’s really close to me, it would be so easy to just kiss-’ I cut off my thoughts and smile at him, letting go of him and quickly walking up the stairs to my room. I’ need to focus, I’m here to help him catch Kira, not drool over him, and besides, I should NOT be crushing on the guy that wants to lock up my only brother.’ Ryuzaki blushes and makes that cute, embarrassed face he made the first day he met Misa.

“Pull yourself together, dumbass. I mean, come on, that’s so overrated anyway.” I try to convince myself as I go up the many steps. ‘At this rate, I won’t need to go to a gym.’ My room here is very tidy, unlike my usual one. The charger is sitting on my bedside where it’s easy to find.

I hastily plug the device in, ‘the battery is not the same as it was five years ago.’ While I wait for it to charge, I zone out, imagining what could happen if only Ryuzaki felt the same. He and Light are talking about something, I think it’s something to do with cake, I don’t know. ‘I wonder what it would feel like to cuddle him and even kiss him.’

“You look tired, Airi, you should go to bed.” I nod, but make no move to get up, my eyes staying on one spot. I should get up and go to bed, but I’m frozen, just staring, it feels really good though, I don't know why. “Airi?” My eyes finally move to Light, he and Ryuzaki are staring at me, though they have completely different looks. Light looks fed up with me already and Ryuzaki seems to find it very humorous.

“Something funny, Ryuzaki?” I call him out and he blushes again. ‘He’s so funny to mess with.’ “Damn it, how are you so damn adorable?” I say out loud, before I can stop myself. One hand quickly covers my mouth, the other grabs my laptop off the charger and I run straight up the stairs to hide in my room. I hear the distinct sound of the handcuffs behind me, but ignore it.

~Light POV (I hate him)~

Ryuzaki pulls me up the stairs with him, going after Airi. ‘His crush is so obvious, so is hers, yet they’re so damn oblivious to each other's feelings.’ “Ugh! I’m only saying this because I’m sick of getting dragged along with you to follow her, only for nothing to happen. She likes you!
