Papyrus and Sans moved to Snowdin
So, for anyone who didn't know, Papyrus and Sans did not grow up in Snowdin. They moved there and its never been explained where they lived before that.
Tumblr media
According to the bunny shopkeeper, they just showed up one day! (Similar to how Sans just shows up one day with his brother in Deltarune)
Which is why this Q&A is so neat!!!
Tumblr media
Where did Papyrus and Sans live BEFORE Snowdin??? Somewhere with green grass, apparently. God I need more answers.

Hi! I'm a big fan of Papyrus conspiracies, excpically as someone who LOVES to theorise about the mysteriously upbeat side character. I'm not sure if these things has been mentioned before but... I would like to put my two cents in.
No eyelights. Canonically, San's eye lights disapepar when he is too angry at the player to keep up his smiling mask. But Papyrus NEVER has eyelights, just a goofy human eyeball thing when he's being expecially silly. But. Never. Any. Eyelights. I feel like this is important.
If Sans was a scientist prior to everything else, wouldn't it have been strange to live in Snowdin? I mean, there is the River Person and San's shortcuts, but it doesn't make much sense. Sooo, at some point it would have been reasonable for them to have lived in Hotland.
The lack of astrick before the text when he talks. I don't know why it is like that but it just is Strange and I want to know more. WHAT COULD IT MEAN? I am sure it means SOMETHING.
Attracts cyrptids/time gods like flies to honey. The Annoying Dog, Flowey, the River Person that nobody else seems to know about. Flowey isn't the only one that seems to find this "naive child" strangely interesting.
As much as it is a crucial part of his character, it is strange that he forgives mass murderers. What kind of "brutal guy" is he to think even THESE people can do better? Or is it just that he remembers that they have proven that they can be?
The Gauntlet of Deadly Terror. Not enough talk about this in the Undertale fandom in my opinion. What the hell, Papyrus, why did you make that? He only realises that Undyne would be a better aduience than Chara AFTER he makes it. Golf. Harmless puzzle games. Confusing and vague "puzzle". GAUNTLET OF DEADLY TERROR.
Thank you for reading thought my little rant about HIM. He's just such a mystery to me and I love him.
Hi there, thank you so much for the ask. ^^ And I'm so sorry for the late reply.
I miss getting Papyrus theory asks, so this was really nice to receive. ;w;
I have seen some of these before, but it's really nice to have them compiled into an ask like this, anon. Papyrus has a lot of very unusual things about him, like Sans does. I love the asterisks bit because it really is strange that he's the only one who never uses asterisks. He also does attract a lot of god-like beings, and even Flowey seems fond of him.
My theory on the part where he forgives you is because he did something terrible in the past and tried to be better, but who knows? We barely know about his past. Even with Sans, at least we know he's a scientist.
I also think that the skelebros used to live in Hotland, something must have happened there which resulted in Papyrus hating Hotland.
I love the Gauntlet of Deadly Terror, I think that's why Undyne calls him a "brutal guy", because he's perfectly capable of making some pretty deadly stuff like that. ^^
Thanks again for the ask, anon! I love getting asks about Papyrus and Undertale in general. I haven't gotten asks like this in years, so it's nice.

* DELTARUNE MAIN THEORIES (In order of probability? Maybe?)
1. BERDLY will be completely unimportant, and SNOWGRAVE will happen no matter what.
* this is simply due to the fact that snowgrave exists at all. toby fox has stated repeatedly that our choices don’t matter, and that the ending will stay the same. he’s also said that what happens within the story may be more important than the ending itself. both things combined and berdly’s arm being fried in a main route “ending” makes me believe that he’s simply gonna be killed off, whether we make noelle do it or if someone else does it for us
2. DELTARUNE is both a prequel and a sequel.
* i’m still not sure is prequel/sequel are the right words? deltarune definitely isn’t a direct beginning/sequel story to undertale. however, i firmly believe that it’s the prequel to sans and papyrus’s stories, both as brothers and as their own people.
* as for the “both” part, i believe that gaster took us and our/frisk’s soul from post-pacifist, and travelled us to the past, deltarune. i believe that his goal is not to harm others, but to help us create a better end for the deltarune universe and a better future for sans and papyrus. this one is very complicated, but it’s based off the fact that gaster was shattered across time and space, and that twitter! gaster said that he looks forward to “creating a new future” with us
3. KNIGHT PAPYRUS
* this is a HUUUGE theory, and i made multiple branches of it to cover every basis, both close to canon and far from it, so i’m gonna order them from how much i like them!!
— PAPYRUS stumbled into a dark world after GASTER’s passing (and thus, after his darkness related experiments), and was convinced by a fragment of GASTER to become THE KNIGHT for THE LIGHTENERS’s sakes.
* simply explained, undertale papyrus has a huge desperation to help everyone he can. i believe that especially after the passing of a likely loved one, papyrus would be easily manipulated into doing things to make others feel better
— PAPYRUS became THE KNIGHT in an attempt to cope with life through escapism, and to help THE LIGHTENERS escape their own issues as well.
* it’s clear that the main teen lighteners of deltarune have a ton of issues. kris and susie both have issues with their home lives, with toriel being semi-neglectful and kris being isolated from asgore due to toriel’s hatred of him, and with susie likely being homeless, or at the very least, very poor. noelle has a missing sister that could very well be dead, an ill father, and an extremely strict mother that she’s home alone with thanks to her dad being sick. berdly has major self esteem issues due to not being noticed much as a child until he won a spelling bee. due to how little we know about papyrus and his past, other than the fact that he was confirmed t be from the deltarune universe (green grass), i believe that papyrus could very well have used a power he found to create worlds of paradise for himself and the others.
— Either SANS, PAPYRUS, or both, are partially DARKENERS, and are using the threat of THE ROARING to find a way to exist in the LIGHT WORLD.
* this is a far fetched one, but it’s one i really enjoy. they both have major connections to darkeners already. sans is a lot like the spade family, he can teleport like rouxls and lancer, and papyrus says his room is like “another world”, which has a ton of darkness at the beginning. papyrus has major ties to jevil. not sure how to explain it other than that ralsei could very well be wrong about the roaring
— PAPYRUS being THE KNIGHT relates to GASTER’s experiments with darkness/DARK WORLDS.
* this one spiraled into a genuine theory due to a story i was writing about sans and papyrus for an rp. basically, as seen with kris, the creation of dark fountains is a disruption yet harmonization of light and dark. if sans is half lightener, and if papyrus is half darkener, then their similarities yet differences could prove as dark fountain symbolism
— PAPYRUS is GASTER, and he experimented with DARK WORLDS.
* papyrus has the most connections to gaster out of everyone, to the point of being referenced in one of two times his name is mentioned (smiling shred). most fun value events also happen in the two areas papyrus says he’s familiar with, snowdin and waterfall. he also shows a strange sadness when he sees the core in a phone call. i guess a tldr for this is that he made himself a villain, but decided to move on, fake his death, and try to forget he was ever “gaster”. papyrus seems obsessed with redemption, to the point where both snowdin xbox achievements reference a bible story about redemption, so this could be likely.
(i combined two theories into one)
3.5. SANS X JEVIL?
* i’m extremely biased towards this ship, but i can’t help but feel like that if knight papyrus is canon, sans and jevil will end up getting together due to how similar they are. extremely powerful, aware of everything being a game, nihilistic, comedians, round in body shape and head, an association with yellow… it makes sense i swear

Papyrus is the Knight
Okay, holding myself accountable. I’ll explain these points more later.
1. Narratively makes sense (Papyrus’s character arc never reached any sort of conclusion, multiple unanswered questions regarding his relationship to Gaster and exactly how much he knows, etc.)
2. First UT patch (made available about three months after UT originally released) added a line where Papyrus claims he would have blasted you, most likely with a Gaster Blaster.
By then Sans’ fight was common knowledge in the UT community (people discovered Gaster merely days after UT initially released), so this line would be an odd way to foreshadow Sans’ attacks and ultimately pretty much meaningless from a narrative standpoint unless Toby Fox wanted to reveal Papyrus had Gaster Blasters later on (which, well, never happens in UT).
3. Would have “blasted” you in a genocide run (was surprised when you killed him with a single blow)
4. “Brutal” line in UT, followed by a rare expression of genuine sadness
5. Closet connections between UT and DR
6. Bizarre emphasis on not knowing what his hands look like in UT and an emphasis on the Knight having long hands in DR
7. Phone connections
8. Can see through phones
9. NoClip theory (find source!)
10. Aware of RESETs?
11. Manipulative streak, but has good intentions
12. Prone to denial and escapism (a running theme in DR)
13. Theoretical battle scenarios (find source! not my theory)
14. DR sprite for Papyrus already made (find source! not my theory)
15. Hierophant theory (find source! not my theory)
16. “What The Four Shadows Foreshadow” by HalfBreadChaos (will link later, not my theory)
17. Revelations connection theory on UT Reddit (will link later, not my theory)
18. Flowey and the Annoying Dog are oddly focused on him throughout UT
19. Starmen symbol on his armor (agent of Gaster? Probably reaching here)
There are a lot of posts and videos I need to link. Anything that says it needs a source is something I noticed because someone else wrote it or discussed it in a video. I have been busy with grad school and work, but I want to write this out so I have something to reference when more DR chapters come out.

Papyrus is so mysterious!
*RANT INCOMING :p*
QUACK Gosh I freaking love Papyrus ;-; ! He’s just so cool, and I feel like a lot of people don’t realize just how interesting and mysterious Papyrus is. If you were ask an average Undertale fan for some facts about him, they would probably just tell you some basic like how he likes puzzles and spaghetti. (Except he’s never actually eaten spaghetti! He only likes cooking it for others and his favorite food is dinosaur eggs and oatmeal!) But other than that, we don’t really know much about the guy. In fact, we know almost nothing. Think about it! Like, why does he dislike Hotland so much? Sure, we know he dislikes Hotland because of the conveyers and steam vents, but the reasons he gives about them are pretty vague or strange (looking at you “ICE AND SPIKES, NOW THERE’S CONVENIENCE!”). What happened for him to be so appalled by the place? We also know nothing about his past. We know plenty about Sans’s past, about how he was associated with science and probably worked with Alphys. But Papyrus? We don’t even know what the heck he did before the whole Royal Guard thing! He’s such a mystery. Papyrus literally has the most lines of dialogue in game at 2184 lines (excluding the narrator who has 2418 lines). Like, how!? The most narcissistic and flamboyant skeleton in game talks this much and yet we know basically NOTHING! We know more about GASTER than Papyrus and that isn’t even an exageración. He is very secretive and I think that his mysterious side is highly underrated.
Anyway, thanks for reading my little rant about THE GREAT PAPYRUS!! I hope you learned something interesting and that you’ll start to do your digging into this matter :D

I was looking at Undertale's tarot cards and I found something interesting.
You know card XX is Sans and it's the Final Judgment, that's right with him
But I wonder why the fifth card is Papyrus. It's Five of Cups
I know it's not canon merch, but you might be interested in it:
"The Five of Cups also tends to appear if you have suffered a recent bereavement as it represents mourning and grief."
"The Five of Cups suggests you’re stuck in the past and can’t let go. Old wounds and bitter memories flood your mind as you think about what happened."
"The meaning of the Five of Cups shows that you may have certain issues letting go of things which are in the past. "
So yeah. Tell me what do you think

Sans and papyrus are fallen kids??
Fan theory for sans, this is slightly supported but not really. I think sans and papyrus are children that fell down (maybe 2nd or third) asgore felt bad about killing the children still so he revived them as skeletial monsters theres minor proof, again not cannon just a small theory. (USE TONE INDECATORS FOR DEBATING.)
ITs small but yeah

Hey so idk if anyone has said this yet but.
Knight Papyrus actually fits into DR's theme of escapism!! cause he wants to be popular and well liked so he makes worlds he can go to be those things? Maybe why we havent seen him yet is bcause he spends most of his time in the dark worlds he creates and ignores the less favorable light one!!

I've noticed something about Papyrus. He describes some of his puzzles as if he can see them from a bird's eye view like the player instead of ground-level like a character. Some people interpret this as him being able to magically see from the player's point of view, but consider this: Papyrus has been shown to have the ability to levitate. I think it's more likely that he's using this ability to see the puzzles he's making from a bird's eye view. What do you think?
Hello. :D
Sorry for the late reply. ;;
I do have the headcanon that Papyrus can somehow see things from the player’s view. It’s just a cool idea to go with Sans knowing about resets.
You make a really good point about Papyrus levitating. Maybe he really did just float up to see the puzzles from above. ^^ That’s very likely too.
Thanks for the ask.

Theory: Papyrus's battle body
So, everyone should know about 'Papyrus's battle body', it's something I've been pointing aggressively at for years to point out that his brother is a liar-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Contradicting what he says, during the hang out, Papyrus specifies that he wears his special clothes underneath his 'REGULAR CLOTHES'.
Tumblr media
Then the interview came out and it turns out I was wrong.. Papyrus's battle body is indeed....
Tumblr media
...
....HANG ON A SECOND.
What the interview confirms is that Papyrus does indeed have a battle body, but what's also been confirmed is that it's not his clothes. But there's also an important question to factor in: Does what his brother say, have any merit? Was this 'battle body' made a few weeks ago for a party?
I've mentioned this before but it's very important for this theory, there's a post on the Undertale tumblr that relates to this:
Tumblr media
"not everyone is as tough as my brother." - immediately starts talking about Shyren for some reason. "they say those without blame should cast the first stone." (Is this implying something happened to Papyrus that someone could be blamed for?)
Anyway, Shyren's form in battle is made of 2 different monsters, the body is 'Shyren's agent'.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Papyrus loses his head when killed, and his body dusts, then his head. They both have different dust patterns.
Tumblr media
"Papyrus's body and head have different dust patterns because it's his battle body but not his battle head" - @fluo-skeletons
If I can make an assumption from the Undertale changelog, dust patterns are changed for each individual monster. There was some extensive research done before I found this, including checking dust pattern related to monster size, HP, EXP, G, and none of them seemed to line up.. Was this patch note intentional for these connections to be made?
Tumblr media
(Image cropped and modified for ease of reading, this is on the fandom wiki)
What I'm saying is that Papyrus's entire body was made, and he didn't always look how we see him in the game. But this leads to one of the biggest mysteries of Papyrus, what or who is he?
There's not a character that's canonically been shattered to pieces that speaks just like he does, there is never any implication he can read wingdings either so ignore that
He can walk/run through the air, he acknowledges things that implies he knows he's in a game, and how games themselves function. He's implied the ability to use a save file, he can use blasters, his bedroom is silent. It's implied he's been inside the true lab, or at least Alphys's lab. He's implied that he can see from your perspective (NOT FRISK'S, YOURS.), the annoying dog annoys him the most, he can change game UI and take over the whole screen.
Tumblr media
Who else has done that?
