No More Human Santa?

This semester I am taking a theology and religious study course that focuses on determining who Jesus was as a person. Many people express that Jesus had blonde hair and was white whether it be through paintings, sculptures, or film adaptation. Before taking this course, I would have accepted this idea as Jesus being a blonde and white male utilizing the continuum of Social Judgement Theory. But as we began to dive into where Jesus was actually from and the people that typically live in this area, we learned that Jesus had a darker colored skin tone and brown hair leading me to fall back on the continuum to the reject side and rejecting the idea that Jesus was a blonde and white male. One day in class we read an article that was discussing whether if Santa Claus should stop being depicted as a white man anymore and even change his depiction to a penguin. I personally and probably many others would fall on the acceptance side of the continuum of Social Judgement Theory because I like the idea of Santa being depicted as a penguin. After all, penguins are both black and white making penguin Santa inclusive to all races. As a person who was always scared and cried on mall Santa’s lap as a child for pictures because you are essentially sitting on a stranger’s lap which can be very scary and unsettling for young children. Many people and children love penguins and view them as cute and cuddly creatures. Utilizing a penguin Santa also means that there is no need to change or edit all of the Christmas folklore because since penguins cannot fly there is still a need for Rudolph and his fellow reindeer to deliver presents to children of the world and still have the white beard and red and white suit. The one vital piece of information that would need to be fixed for geographical accuracy is that penguin Santa would have to move from the South Pole to the North Pole. Even though I and others would accept this idea of having a penguin Santa rather than a human Santa there will probably be a good majority of people that would reject this idea of having a penguin Santa because of its absurdity.

Penguin Santa reminds you there have been 141 (and counting!) assaults on drag-themed events this year in the United States. There’s legislation being considered in at least four states that would prohibit public drag in the presence of anyone under the age of 18. Only the truly joyless and hateful are afraid of a little dress-up and healthy gender play. Forcing kids to conform to restrictive and retrograde gender roles is the real “grooming.”
