THE METAMORPHOSIS OF NOE’ ARCHIVISTE

I have an admission: I never particularly liked the so-called ‘cinnamon rolls’. They’re the pure characters, the goody-two shoes, nice, always loving, who never get angry (tenderly upset at most), want to save everybody, uwu, protectatallcosts … and not much else in the way of personality. They often end up as the blandest in the character cast.

When they’re given some depth, it’s often to show that they’re hypocrites and actually the exact opposite of what they present themselves as, absolute bastards with no redeeming traits; an archetype that often ends up just as stereotyped and flat as the ‘pure’ version.

That’s why, when I find a Cinnamon Roll that’s well and truly good and kind, and at the same time has darker characteristics that make them a multidimensional character, I tend to absolutely love them. This is the case of Noé Archiviste.

Noé starts out as the most straightforward Cinnamon Roll: he’s nice and polite to Amelia, he rushes to adorably stamp himself on the glass when they first get in sight of the city (revealing he had a sheltered, country upbringing in the meanwhile), and when Vanitas ambiguously rushes on the scene, appearently attacking Amelia, he chivalrously runs to defend the distressed damsel. Said damsel ends up using him as a snack, but it’s the thought that matters.

Right after, he saves Vanitas from the fall, with a little aside to muse on the beauty of a moon that most vampires consider a bad omen; something he did even when he was little. Back to Vanitas, he wouldn’t want to help him, initially, because he doesn’t like him, something he says with an utterly candid honesty; but further talking with Amelia and remembering why his elusive Teacher sent him to Paris to begin with change his mind (on helping, not on Vanitas).

But between the Loup Garou and the Bal Masqué arcs, here appears an interesting characteristic of Noé: a tendency to place people into slots. Vanitas, who introduced himself as someone who could save vampires from Malnomen, was promptly labelled as someone who could never fail, as per his own words. When it happened, or at least it happened in the eyes of Noé, and they stumbled upon a cursebearer too far gone to be cured and could only be mercy killed, Noé snapped.

But he himself realized his mistake. Vanitas never promised him anything, it was him who pushed his expectations on the other. He acts as the most stable person in the asylum that is VnC: he goes to Vanitas and apologizes, declaring his interest in actually following and helping him, as a person, not as a savior on a pedestal.

In the Catacombs Arc, he has his first very serious argument with Vanitas. The reason is quite simple: he was lecturing Vanitas on the fact that he was weak and so shouldn’t have exposed himself to danger; this paired with putting himself at risk to protect him. Classical heroic behavior, except that it pisses off Vanitas to no end.

The doctor - who, unknowingly to Noé, is currently fighting against an onslaught of horrible memories and trauma - explodes at him, to the point of calling him slurs, and going on a tirade against ‘people who are strong, but make themselves weak’, meaning those who will sacrifice themselves for the sake of others.

Now, Noé really didn’t expect such a reaction, but if there’s one thing we can say about him, is that he learns. From that moment onward, he never again treats Vanitas like some frail little creature, instead regarding him as an equal. At least explicitly, we’ll get there in a moment.

So, Noé concludes his role in the Catacombs Arc all heroic and ispirational. Next thing he does, is falling headfirst in a very obvious trap Ruthven set up for him. He likely didn’t expect it, not from someone in such a respectable position as a Senator, playing well into the classical naivete of a Cinnamon Roll; but it resulted in a mistake that now puts him under Ruthven’s control, and he doesn’t even know it.

During the Gevaudan Arc, he once again tries to play nice against an enemy: he finds himself in front of Astolfo, a mere fifteen-years-old, but a fifteen-years-old who’s hell-bent on killing him and actually has the means to do so. This wouldn’t mean he would be easily capable to defeat Noé, but our resident Cinnamon Roll is too busy trying not to hurt the kid to put up a proper fight.

The one to set him straight is Vanitas, the one who had previously faced Astolfo by playing absolutely lurid with psychological warfare. He points out that his life is in danger, and in their current situation they can’t allow themselves any weakness: Noé needs to stop having care for child adversaries, and fight at his full capacity. Please set aside this teaching for later.

Admittedly, Noé is kind of on the sidelines for the Gevaudan arc. This isn’t to say that he doesn’t do anything, but still he doesn’t receive the same level of focus as Chloé or Jeanne; this is basically their arc. He mainly reacts to what is going on around him: he expresses shock at Chloé’s appearent decision to side with Naenia, pities Jean-Jacques, runs around trying to protect and save Vanitas. All good, ‘appropriate’ reactions to what’s happening.

And he takes Vani’s advice on how to fight Astolfo very seriously. He finally gives his … most, because at the end of it, the kid is still standing, with most of his wounds due to abusing the Chasseur’s drug.

Then the Amusement Park arc happens. And oh boy, if our Cinnamon Roll isn’t shaken to the core.

First, his childhood friend is placed in danger, bringing the trauma from Louis’ death in the forefront of his mind; then he is forced into a blood-drinking he doesn’t want, by a child of all things; then he finds himself in front of Vanitas, who loses the softer demeanor he has had this recent chapters and reverts back to his cold self, refusing to do anything to save the last friend Noé has. At this point, Misha orders him to fight Vanitas and forcibly drink his blood. And Noé does so.

Look how this ‘cinnamon roll’ is being portrayed right now: a disproportionated mass of fangs that lunges on. That’s the representation of a monster. Vanitas goes from ‘cold and detached’ to 'absolutely terrified' in the span of less than a second. He fights back, but this clash is uneven; the vampire can destroy the whole park with little to no effort, while Vanitas has to inject himself with the Chasseur drug just to avoid him.

What makes the whole situation even more interesting is Johan’s disgusted comment. He observes that Noé is strong, and confident in his strenght; he never really had to do whatever it takes just to stay alive, and that, not some particular moral superiority, is why he can play the benevolent part, the role of the one who won’t stoop to certain lows in a fight.

This allows the weaker Vanitas, who is used to fight tooth and nail to just survive, a margin of advantage; but it’s not definitive, and the situation isn’t truly resolved between the two, it’s resolved by Jeanne.

She ran up to the amusement park, saw the situation, basically undestood everything in a glance and 1) saved Dominique, removing the need for a conflict between Noé and Vanitas; 2) yelled at Noé to take a good look at his opponent, to ‘truly’ look at him. This proved to be vital: suddenly Noé realized the expression of absolute terror Vanitas had, and a split second later he saw his own expression in a mirror - one of absolute fury.

This clashes so much with the idea he has of himself, of who he wants to be, that he stops dead on his tracks and reconsiders the situation. Now lucid, he can get back at reflecting on his misgivings about Vanitas, about what he messed up and what he can do next, and go on to be the sensible, self sacrificing part in the fight.

This endangers his own life by a lot, but in the end, even the brainwashed Vanitas can’t bring himself to kill him, and ultimately collapses from the exaustion of the fight, the drugs and the emotional stress. The situation here is averted, and then Teacher arrives on the scene and distracts everyone with his mysteries.

Then, there is yet another rooftop confrontation between Noé and Vanitas, with a guest star appearence by an heavily bandaged Misha. It’s the first time we see both of our heroes so calm and collected, even talking things out (what’s this heresy?). It’s the scene where Vanitas drops the bomb: if he were to be killed, he would like to be killed by Noé. And our hero says nothing to this; but he leans on Vanitas, wordlessly showing him trust and then he helps him rise up, like he had done in the catacombs.

Now, the reason I find Noé so interesting is in two elements. The first can be expressed via Johan’s comment: Noé’s kindness is due in no small part to his own strength, to his underlying awareness that he is powerful and, should he fail the diplomatic strategy, he would probably win over most dissidents (especially those he already pegged as ‘weak’ like Vanitas) by sheer force. I mean, this is not a very charitable interpretation - it reeks of condescention a mile wide. Noé’s willingness to talk things out wouldn’t be born of (or at least, not entirely) actual respect for others and a love for pacific communication, but from a gracious concession, that can be revoked anytime.

It also gives him a disadvantage: when he thinks that his opponent is weaker (that is, most of the time), he gets concerned about them. He can’t be too rough on them, the poor little things wouldn’t be able to survive his might! And this comes to bite him in the ass because, as pointed out by Johann, when people fight believing that their life is in line, they give everything they’ve got, overpowering someone who’s techincally stronger but holding back.

So, there is this interesting little spin on the Cinnamon Roll who wants to resolve things by talking; it’s not a complete subversion, it’s an exploration on why he behaves like that and why this behaviour might not be inherently ‘pure’.

The second is the constant growth that is demanded of him. I’m used to stories where the Cinnamon Roll archetype starts out pretty much as good as he cana get and spends the plot turning people better by supporting them; at most, they must learn to Not Be So Naive.

The plot of The Case Study of Vanitas is Noé starting out as sheltered, recognizing that he is, and try to improve himself. Noé is constantly analizing his own behavior: he learned not to push his own expectations onto the others, he learned that people can have complex and painful backstories and that he can empathize with them, but he can also recognize their pain and decide that he can’t abide their behavior anyways. He is in the long, awkward process of trying to stop seeing other people as inherently frail and in need of his protection, but also stop seeing them as ‘not a problem, I can shut them up if I really want to’.

Personally, I don’t think that this will be the kind of story where the naive protagonist turns into Gruff Hardass one beating after the other. I think that by the end, Noé will have suffered a lot; he will have experienced even more traumas that those he already has, and get some more things to feel guilty about under his belt. But I don’t think he’ll ever lose his idealism. He might be tempted, but he’ll refuse to lose hope and become like Ruthven, turning into an ispiration for whomever survives of the current cast.

And with this, I think I exhausted this little and fairly pointless rant.

// Im aware I haven't done much in the way of canon divergent stuff aside from interacting with OCs and other general rp stuff so I kinda wanted to do a post explaining just general stuff about my versions of these guys. I haven't mentioned any of this in threads but I likely will in the future. It won't be too important. The focus will still be on my and your muse interacting. Just small mentions here and there. Just want yall to be aware. So here we go!

Oh Satan There's Three Of Them...

Okay so first big thing, These three know each other. I haven't worked as to how, but they do, there more or less friendly with each other, Striker still has his volcano lair, and Robo has a room at Loo Loo Land, and Chaz has an apartment in Pride now (Greed was considered too dangerous) which Robo is there a lot with Striker stopping by and sleeping there like half the time, so they all pitch in as pseudo roommates.

They also eventually form the R.A.T. Rapid Assassination Team, thank my friend @another-generic-moxxie-player for the name btw. After Robo and Chaz find they enjoy helping Striker out on his hits, and while he won't admit it, Striker likes the help. They only operate In Hell, so they aren't direct competitors to I.M.P, but there kinda intended to be a Bizzarro ish I.M.P (Think Legion of Doom to I.M.P's Justice League, even if there both companies that profit off Murder XP)

I want to post some stories expanding how they interact, but for now, they genuinely like each other, even if they get on each other's nerves, as all friends do. There also a queerplatonic Polycule, open though of course :3

Now for the Individual Stuff!

Striker: Striker is more or less the same, he's still the Royal Hating, Smug Bastard of a Cowboy we all know and love, With a few changes, more just defining canon traits more though. His royal hatred is more just hatred for the spoiled and naive, those who ignore the plights of the less fortunate while they sit in ivory towers and all that. As well as just general bigotry against Imps and other Marginalized Hellbornes. If your muse kinda gives him those vibes off, he's not gonna be to nice, but if they prove themselves, or grows out of it, he'll warm up little by little, but those beliefs and mindsets are kinda a dealbreaker for him, as you'd expect. Strella is a bit odd here but I'd be fine writing with a Stella who tries to be better, just saying. Same with any royal or noble muses.

Another thing, Striker's whole frustration when people make things a sex thing, mine only get's really annoyed in a serious fight, generally with people he doesn't have an interest in. He still is someone who has sex as some... recent threads have shown XP He just prefers sexual stuff in the right context. If people make horny jokes in a fight or while he's threatening them, it makes him think people aren't taking him seriously, which he hates. But that's mostly it, may update this later.

Robofizz: Robofizz is also pretty much the same. But a bit more developed off of general vibes and my own headcanons. This the Loo Loo Land Robofizz to be clear. For one he is his own person separate from. OG Fizz. While Robo and all his 'twins' were programmed to mimic him, they all vary in their own ways from minor to major. Though their all pretty goofy and silly like the original and most like him. This one in particular actually is good friends with him. Visiting Ozzie's when Mammon allows it. (He smacked Striker in the face after Oops and it wasn't the only reason he did it)

He still works at Loo Loo Land, and has a bed room there, but when he's off he's often at Chaz's place since he likes having someone to talk too, though if he can get the other guys to visit the park he will enjoy that even if it's rare. He's the person Striker get's annoyed at the most by the way XP

Robo also has up to ten tentacles he can sprout from his back, though he often just uses it to mess with people outside of the bedroom. Which of course he's a massive tease and flirt being kinda trained by Mammon to be seductive, he'll cool it sometimes though, he just likes getting on peoples nerves and he is a relentless prankster at times. He's a fun guy and pretty nice if your willing to handle that though.

Chaz: Chaz is... Well he's Chaz XP Well of course he's alive here, though unless I specify an AU of some sort, Exes and Oohs did happen for the most part, he just booked it afterwards. He's still very horny, unless his small brain is occupied being confused, surprised, or spooked. He'll still makes passes though XP One big thing about my Chaz is that he does care about people, he did genuinely have feelings for Moxxie and Millie, he just has no idea how to show affection outside of Sex or flirtation, and his intense sex drive and lack of courage ruined both of them, and after escaping Crimson, he realizes just how bad he was, and he really doesn't want to hurt someone like that again. He won't say that, he sucks at being open like that, but he'll try alongside trying to bed people XP

He is still horribly open with his desires, and can't read the room when it comes to if he should, or shouldn't flirt with someone unless he's specifically told, he might whine a bit though but he'll respect it. We'll still throw some joke flirts though, and he's overall the nicest of my guys despite his overbearing bravado at points. Not sure what else to say rn except that overall, he's a horny dumbass, but he tries, but give him an inch of interest and he'll get even worse XD He nice if dummy XP

Hi there!! So sorry to bother you, but I was wondering if you had any advice on how you write Nathan? Whenever I try, he’s either too much of an asshole or way too sweet, and you always get that perfect balance of bastard to softy in your writing.

And if you don’t have any advice/tips, then simply think of this as a love letter to your immense talent and beautiful writing :)

It’s tricky to step back and reflect on but I did try to unpick things a little. Idk… see what you make of this and I hope it helps! 😄

Of course, these are just my personal thoughts and musings, and anyone and everyone else is welcome to chip in! I’m sure you all have great advice to share 😊

I mainly included some prompts and questions to consider, rather than trying to limit your interpretation in any way - we need your unique take on him! 😁

Position: what’s your position on how much of an ass he actually is? Is he a complete asshole but reader makes him soft? Is he a bit of an ass but mainly a bit misunderstood? Is he well-meaning but he simply shows his emotions / communicates in non-typical ways which people read as negative? Having a clear position makes it easier to demonstrate where he is acting out of character or not within a fic and might support the flips between assholey and soft. (We all have good and bad traits so pinning the limits of Nathan’s in your own interpretation might help? Is he cruel in X situation or about X thing but draws the line at X thing, for example? How does his assholery link specifically to his traits like ego, arrogance rather than being all-consuming. Where does it fall down to the more positive sides of his personality? This will probably help painting him as too cruel as well and making it harder to later pitch him as sympathetic.)

Nathan’s motivation and internal conflict: what does Nathan want and is there a conflict here (internal or otherwise). For example, is he a goner for reader and he is an ass on purpose to avoid showing it? Is he smitten but he’s oblivious, so his soft thoughts or actions are going to blindside even him? Does he think he wants to be left alone in peace, but doesn’t realise that’s untrue until reader is gone? Sometimes there might be a motivating force for being a dick rather than this aspect being a static personality trait. Does he have an outward behaviour which is at odds with his internal behaviour / thoughts? Also if we’re thinking about the transition from ass to soft, if you know the reason behind it it’s easier to unravel it later!

Other conflict: is there another type of conflict which makes Nathan and reader butt heads? What are reader’s flaws? Are they business rivals? Are they exes? Once this conflict is set up does the dynamic change once this conflict is removed? Is there an event or happening which puts Nathan in a vulnerable position or enables him to soften?

Nathan’s remorse / realisation: do Nathan’s behaviours change towards reader? Is there any motivating force behind this? For example, does he realise he’s gone too far? Does he express remorse or not? Does something happen to make him aware of the effect of his actions on reader where before he was in the dark? Is there a long-term character development or shift in priorities (why?)? Is he humbled for some reason? People do and can change and grow based on new information, so thinking about the depth and pace and direction of this change can help move him towards softness. It can be as abrupt or as gradual as you like, as long as the before / after is consistent in itself. You can also make him change reluctantly (happening despite himself) or eagerly (trying and either succeeding or failing) to change. Does he want to do better? Can he? Does he? Does he stick at it? Does he continue to put his foot in it? Does he double-down?

Interpretation and demonstration: how does reader interpret Nathan’s actions? How does he interpret theirs? Everyone has a different communication profile, different love languages etc. There may be a conflict in styles or modes of expressing fondness which initially leads to misunderstandings. You might want to decide how Nathan expresses affection (and doesn’t), how he shows he cares (and doesn’t), and how that relates to what reader is familiar with, wishes to see, and understands. To balance the bastard to soft ratio, it might be useful to think about areas where he might fail to show consideration, but then thinking about balancing that with an area he very much does. For example, maybe he doesn’t express care through physical touch, but he may always make sure you take your vitamins or whatever. Maybe he always forgets about your dinner dates but if you actually need him he jumps on a plane within minutes to get to you. Deciding what he values and whether that gels with what reader values is always gonna be useful! Also deciding what you personally just could not see Nathan doing. Maybe you think he would never buy someone a huge plushie for their birthday (though then sometimes it’s a fun way to play with a bastard-y character by subverting that and making them do the thing they would never). Maybe you think he would show his affection by telling you his fave episodes of Star Trek.

Characterisation from canon: questionable morals in some respects, for sure, but there’s a lot of ambiguity here which makes him so wonderful to play with when writing him, and deciding how much of a bastard you want him to be. We see a very distinct version of him in the movie, at a single point in time. There are no doubt qualities of Nathan which are inalienable: his ego, ambition, intelligence, quest for discovery etc. but for other traits it’s up for grabs whether you think he’d be, for example, just as manipulative outside of the setting of his experiment. Whether he’s just as controlling when he hasn’t spent months scripting every interaction and needs it to go just as he planned. Whether he’s as mean to people as he is to a non-sentient machine which he knows doesn’t have feelings. And so on and so on. He’s so much fun!!! 😁

Werewolves know better about loss than anybody, Fenrir thinks, because they lose so fucking much right from the jump.

In one fell swoop, Fenrir's entire life was ripped from him: his chance at education and a normal future, his friends, his home, his parents. The latter should have hurt the most, but Fenrir found himself building up walls immediately. He didn't even shed one tear for the bastards who left him in the care of cruel ministry officials.

Over the decades, he's had a lot of time to think about all the shit that's been lost or taken, as he prefers to see things, and put it all into perspective. Losing out on a Hogwarts education is something he's still bitter about — having the advantage of knowing magic would come in handy so frequently that it'd be remiss to not think of it as one of the bigger losses, but there's worse than that, he knows.

Narrowing his eyes, the alpha leans forward, scrubs his hands over his salt & pepper beard and scans their face. It's not often that he's so forth-coming, but this is his child, and he cannot deny their curiosity as they seek to know the man who had a hand in creating them; the creature who bestowed upon them at least half of their traits and gifts and problems.

"The loss of self." He answers after a beat, shrugging his shoulders as if it's really that simple. "You won't have this problem, but other wolves do... the moon takes every sense of self we have, every sense of control. I couldn't stop myself if I tried." Not that he's ever been keen on denying himself whatever he wants, but he knows better wolves who can never fight the nature of the beast. "It's distressing to know that there are things that I have done that I could never have prevented short of tying myself up."

//Hm, as much as I love Ash for most conditions and is highly sought out? I wish she got more open ships (For Void Verse, not 'Always Been You') like my other characters, especially Vaggie who got a lot/approached for out the gate- someone with a similar body-type if not less thick than her then sharing traits of 'why' people like Vaggie? I guess it hits a little close to home, as I was in a similar mental state of being child-like for various reasons/or how and why but I won't get into personal baggage, but in the past half decade? More or less became better adjusted and mature, so I can't really blame people either for not even wanting to ship with her future variant when she's better, as it's not, something commonly seen? So I don't take it personally, even if it stings a little at times for a few reasons I've gotten. As it's mostly just bc of how weird they got with her in canon rather than me writing her how she should've been probably going that route. As I want to be open of how they handled Ash rather than hide it, etc, as more probably would be willing then? I can't in good mind do that tho.

Because they have no real characterization other than surface personalities. Then Grunty more or less is an overpowered character that rhymes and can't really make friends that easily, let alone have interactions not confined to plots, schemes and then traversing her worlds or just silliness. Anything I have trouble with is pretty much moving forward while trying to maintain some sort of energy, image for a canon character. An oc is easy, a canon character with little to nothing on them is not, esp if you want to keep a certain energy to them when characterizing them.

As Ash for example, you could probably question why I'm so lax with altering her/adding things to her? Well, Olan intended for there to be more animal aliens and her race was clearly lizard/snake ppl things fed to a giant snake god creature, then Fox's race was intended to a dog alien race. Then the potential for her Invictus, personality, proper motivations stated and the fact that Olan was more or less held by the neck? Ash while not as characterized, has so much in canon or what could be implied/done for a backstory/recharacterization that maintains her feeling to work with rather than me just creating canon that matches the themes, universe, humor or comedic feeling such as with Vaggie or Stella, to whom I get compliments on for both p frequently, but Vaggie has been someone I've had to try and really break in bc of that reason. She's a blank slate basically which will change, but for now yeah.

Then here's the following I have the most fun with: Ash, Betilla, Vaggie, Zeena, Chalice, Lapis, Madeline, Julie, and Scarlet. Hm, I wonder what's similar between all these characters other than Chalice being a literal cup? Short cute/hot bastard in some way or another or Gremlin or a combo of both at some point. Or a jackass milf, granted Betilla is both my most wicked but also most good character with the karmic personification thing.

🍎 : how stable is my muse’s mental health? have they been diagnosed with any mental illnesses and / or conditions?do they have any undiagnosed mental illnesses and / or conditions? do they or should they attend therapy?

WELL this is certainly a whole kettle of fish for Five isn't it?? Five is absolutely, definitely unhinged, but I'm actually very cautious of attaching any sort of label to it because he wasn't ever designed or written to be any sort of example of a particular condition - he was built as a set of traits to best serve a villainous role in a story being flung together on the fly, which is not the best place to go seriously into mental health issues. Someone more knowledgeable than I might be able to point to some traits of his and say 'classic ____!', but that's not something I'm really keen to do. I'm very very leery of creating anything that might suggest 'mental illness = bad person' or 'they're evil because they're cRaZy!!' which is a terrible trope that needs to be squashed; if I was writing any of this for print, I would actually probably adjust some of Ahuska's backstory to make them much more closely mirrored foils for one another. They're close already, by complete accident, and I do like the idea of their parallels demonstrating how similar childhood traumas can result in two very different grown people, but I could definitely do it better still, with far more conscientiousness than emotional, excitable, spur of the moment, on-a-whim character building really allows for.

That said, he definitely has a LOT of layers of trauma and poor coping mechanisms built into his character and absolutely definitely needs help, haha. He's actually survived a lot longer than I ever imagined he would and exploring him coping with his utter, abysmal failure after a lifetime of savagely controlling success has been a lot of fun.

One thing I will say he suffers from is an acute case of Overly Dramatic Bastard, and I'm not sure that's a condition he'll ever be rid of.

🍐 : how intelligent is my muse overall? are they smarter than the average person, or less than? are they primarily self-taught, or did they acquire most of their knowledge in school? are they more street smart or book smart?

Oh, Five is smart as hell, in almost every conceivable way, and possibly sharper than your average intelligence agent. He comes from money and definitely would have been a top scoring student through all his years at prestigious Imperial schools - initially under the thumb of his parents, and then simply because of his desire to Be Best. But he's also adaptable, socially savvy, and probably enjoyed his undercover missions more than any other while working as a field agent, so his street smarts are pretty finely honed as well.

general g.o.t. verse: half-brother of lord heir harrion karstark, he is the bastard son of ruling lord rickard karstark and a reachborn whore by the name of lillian. he is not legitimised, but has grown up alongside his half-siblings and shares a distant but friendly enough relationship with them. his father is somewhat disconnected but has never treated him with cruelty, and the lady karstark has also been civil to him though he represents his fathers' affair. though yoren is treated akin to a fostered outsider, rather than a member of the family and his bastardy isn't often a joke; owing to the ire mentions of the affair elicit from lady karstark. called the grey son mainly due to his habit of wearing a neutral grey garb (armour, clothing, even his saddlebag and sheath are all shades of grey) & the grey of his sealskin pelted cloak, his half-brother and father had taken to wearing black chainmail, so this also made him stand out as the grey 'son', whilst also serving as a misnomer due to his bastardy. this colour motif originally stemmed from his wearing of harrion's hand-me-downs; they were often faded.

general ho.t.d verse: he was already serving as the ruling lord of karhold at the start of the dance. yoren is the direct descendent of the founder of their house, karlon stark. yoren became lord of karhold after his father, kerron karstark, suffered a horrible fall from his horse and sustained a level of paralysis. kerron became angry and resentful after his accident, lashing out at his family and, briefly (before he was removed from public), towards his men and people. he now keeps himself locked away in his room, seperate from his wife, and sees no one bar a maester and his servants. yoren was castellan for six years, and when he was twenty two, he officially took over rule from his father who hadn't been seen in several years.

(hotd) — there is a spiteful part of him that, due to his fathers accident and behaviour placing him as castellan and then lord, he wants to experience more than just karhold and lordship. this conflicts with his firmness in being northernborn and a dedicated leader, so he tries to balance both. he uses his duties as a way to avoid a marriage, claiming that he will once his father is 'well' (an impossibility) ... to allow him to remain uncommitted in at least one of the two great aspects of his life, he's openly flirtatious and arguably promiscuous, at least by the standards of someone who 'should' be married at this point. he cares greatly about his mother, but she has become more and more dedicated to the gods and less in her family since the accident, his only sibling is a brother four years his junior. going into the dance, house karstark follows house stark's support of the blacks. [note: there is no karstark lore in the targaryen era, so details are up to plotting!] (got) — he has somewhat of a chip on his shoulder at being a very clear outsider, like seeing a life he can't have though a thin pane of glass; just out of reach. it's tied less so to the concept of being a lord, or titled, but more that he knows his only kin in the region are no better than passing acquaintences. part of him does wish he had the authority to act as reckless as he feels sometimes, but being half northern and half reachborn, he also feels less valid in defending himself as being worthy of being at karhold. positive. adventurous, appreciative, charismatic & charming, dedicated, dutiful, firm, hardworking, honourable, leaderly, observant, persuasive, romantic, secure, strong, tolerant. neutral. aggressive, competitive, deceptive, dominating, high-spirited, noncommittal, proud, religious/mystical, sensual, stubborn. negative. assertive, brutal, cynical, disrespectful, hedonistic, hostile, impatient, impulsive, opportunistic, petty, possessive, reactive, resentful, strong-willed, superstitious, unrestrained.

v. bloody red keep ; in this timeline, at the outset of game of thrones yoren meets a brother of the nights watch, a 'wandering crow', brother yoren. the nights watchman is to journey up the kings road to collect prisoners for the wall, yoren volunteers and goes with him as to see outside of karhold and the north and learn more about the reach, which is where his mother hailed from. primary location is kings landing. using his bastardy to his advantage, he is able to slip through the initial northern noose that the lannisters put around kings landing, he is blending in as he gathers information on news of his house, house stark and the north, and includes/will include learning of his fathers execution at robb starks hand. (ref. yoren of the nights watch is the crow who intercepts arya at nedd starks beheading and escorts her out of the capital; my yoren would have been seperated from the party between the arresting and execution of lord stark, and unless otherwise stated, his knowledge and opinions are based on the canon events.)

v. they were terrible & red ; this follows more canon timeline lore. rickard is executed by robb, harrion is under lannister capture. his great-uncle arnolf karstark becomes castellan and declares for stannis & house baratheon, yoren's outrage caused a massive verbal row to break out; he argued that neither rickard nor harrion would follow someone who champions the lord of light and denounces the old gods. arnolf had yoren put in a cell for his 'treasonous talk', with the threat of being sent to the wall if he continued. yoren isn't fully aware of the secret alliance with the boltons that his great-uncle has planned, though he had overheard suspicious clips of conversation that would later make sense. when his half-sister alys karstark flees to the wall to seek out jon snow – yoren is tortured and questioned despite having no information. at his earliest opportunity he escapes after much planning; murdering a guard and stealing a horse, making for either the wall or winterfell (for jon snow and his half-sister alys, or to house stark; timeline dependent)

biography.

Wyatt Bateman was born on December 20th, 1988. He was considered a Christmas miracle because his parents Sarah and Frank weren’t planning on having anymore children after their fourth. Frank had a vasectomy, thinking they were done, but Wyatt was conceived and instead of being angry, he and his wife considered it fate. He must be a really important soul to get passed the odds which were one in a thousand. Frank and Sarah made a bet with each other that their fifth and final child would be a girl since they already had four boys. They agreed God might’ve wanted to give Sarah a little girl who was less rowdy than her mischievous boys to play dress up with and buy cute girl stuff for. They decided to keep the gender a surprise until birth and surprise surprise, the baby wasn’t going to be named Crystal. As the doctor delivered a healthy boy the two laughed and named him after Sarah’s favorite uncle who passed away when she was sixteen. To be funny, Sarah made Wyatt’s middle name Crystal and then blamed it on the pain medication when Frank expressed his disapproval.

For the next five years everything would be perfect. They were a warm and loving family but then tragedy struck when Frank got injured at his job as a firefighter. He was only supposed to be out of work for a couple of months but he got addicted to his pain meds and developed a drinking problem which altered his personality from Jekyll to Hyde. They were fighting off and on for months and then years went by without Frank returning to work. It wasn’t much longer after that when Sarah filed for a divorce and custody of their children.

Instead of staying soft and playful, Sarah and Frank’s children became bitter and rough, committing crimes around town and bullying the neighborhood kids. They were infamously known as the Bateman Bastards and the Bastard Five. Whenever they were in sight it was best to run the other way.

After the oldest got arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest, the second and third oldest followed suit and got arrested for armed robbery and grand theft auto. Sarah couldn’t handle them anymore and gave custody back to her husband after he proved he was sober and clean. Wyatt was thirteen and his brother was fifteen. The other three remained in jail and juvie while Frank cracked down on Wyatt and his brother. Frank wanted his sons to be more successful than him. He urged them to study constantly and put their education above friends, sports, and girls. Frank hoped they would reach a level of success instead of winding up in jail or at the bottom of a lake.

Frank would get his wish when Wyatt entered criminal law and his brother med school. It was too late for his other three sons who were raised in the system, constantly in and out of jail and rehab.

As a well-respected and tough criminal lawyer, Wyatt is especially hard on people who remind him of his wayward siblings. There’s a lot of resentment for the way his family fell a part. He feels like a curse; like after he was born everything fell apart. He learned about his father’s vasectomy and how he wasn’t planned. Maybe his birth was a domino effect? The thing to mess everything up. After all, he was met with disappointment after disappointment. Oh, another baby? Oh, its actually not a girl… Oh, now dad is off the rails and mom wants a divorce. It was a toxic way of thinking but how could you not at the very least consider these things? As the youngest and the most insecure, Wyatt has a lot to prove and will do so in the court of law.

There’s still a part of Wyatt that has held onto his older brother’s influence. He’s tasted the forbidden fruit and indulged in enough shady business to know that he loves the rush of letting go and being wild and free. There’s times when he’ll loosen his tie and live on the edge when he thinks no one is watching.

Knowing his mother couldn’t handle him and his brothers and decided to give them up has left him with abandonment issues. It’s hard for him to maintain friendships and relationships. He’ll go out for drinks with co-workers but never let them all the way in and he’ll sleep with girls and go on dates but never save their numbers.

(don’t reblog) i’ve been doing a re-watch of haikyuu vicriously through sarah pavan’s reaction videos, and i am once again amazed by how every single character is introduced as a sort of archetype or stereotype or uni-dimensional personality trait, only for furudate to turn it on its head in five seconds tops, so i’m making a list here with my own muses but if you write canon muses you should give it a try too it’s very fun:

yamaguchi: the sidekick whose entirely personality revolves around their best friend --> is actually the driving force kickstarting change and growth for both of them. kuroo: the sneaky, crafty rival who is a bit of a sarcastic bastard --> actually turns out to be a pivotal teaching figure for several characters, including his alleged rivals. iwaizumi: the brute who constantly uses violence to solve conflicts --> actually ends up dedicating his life to looking after other people. atsumu: the mysterious, cool and provocative threatening antagonist --> actually a giant child. ushijima: the unstoppable force of nature, cold and unfeeling monstrous antagonist, the ‘final boss’ --> just a guy who really loves volleyball more than anything. konoha: the forgettable secondary character whose name nobody remembers --> actually the glue holding his entire team together. leon: the somewhat forgettable sidekick to the final boss antagonist --> actually has more braincells than the final boss antagonist. bokuto: the loveable dumbass and airhead protagonist --> actually much wiser and more insightful than is given credit for. goshiki: the annoying overzealous brat who overestimates himself --> actually a smol child completely starstruck and intimidated by his role model. nekomata: the old teacher with decades of experience who has seen and learnt it all --> actually still learns alongside his students and takes chances on new players and new strategies. hirugami: the easy-going, carefree but threatening antagonist --> actually used to care way too much and went into full burn-out. kita: the impassive, intimidating, strict and undecipherable lowkey leader --> actually just wants his teammates to have the best time and is really happy to be here too.
