Weak Hero Musings (9): On Jihoon's and Pilyoung's Human Decency

SPOILER ALERT

During Baekjin (Donald)'s funeral service episodes, several characters surprised me with their human decency. I already posted about Dongha, so now I'll talk about Jihoon and Pilyoung (Phillip).

Jihoon stayed with Seokhyeon (Kingsley) and Hakho (Jake). To wear that one-striped yellow armband means that he shared Seokhyeon and Hakho's physical and mental burden, as the deceased Baekjin's brother. Which was why he was seen exhausted outside of that charnel house. It wasn't just the gloomy atmosphere, he must've lived very roughly in preparing the funeral for days. But he didn't complain of it, and he stayed.

To be fair to Jihoon, I knew that there's something good in him because he genuinely cared about Jeongyeon (Jack) and sincerely trusted Goseon. Contrary to what strangers might think about him, he didn't care that much about money. But I thought that his own strength was the only thing that really mattered to him.

Or was it because of this mindset that he was willing to lend his strength to Hakho and Seokhyeon? "I'm strong enough to help you both a little bit?" Was that it? Isn't that still decent and kind, anyway?

Then there was Pilyoung (Phillip), the guy who started out as a showy opportunist. He'd come a long way, spending more and more time alone even though outside of the school he was still wearing that façade of the popular scary thug who had eased his way into building networks. Probably because, unbeknownst to himself, Pilyoung no longer cared for the privilege of things, just for things that mattered.

This gradual growth was what led him to coming alone to Baekjin's funeral. Pilyoung couldn't make it because of his emotional turmoil, but the fact that he was willing to go there in spite of past events, and without any rewards, is a testament that all that Pilyoung was missing about the Union was the feeling of camaraderie with Baekjin (and the others).

The fact that Pilyoung spent time personally grieving for Baekjin while also wondering about Sieun's absence is an indication of tremendous emotional growth to me. It's so satisfying to see that in a character and a human being.

Pilyoung (Phillip)

Whenever I say that Taeoh (Teddy)'s and recent Jimmy (Jihoon)'s development are my faves, I seem to forget Pilyoung's. This dude's development is so ahead of the curve. He, unbeknowst to himself, had been steadily gaining the respect of his former enemies: the thing that he used to look for in the past.

I'm curious to see if the official translation will keep that remark or if they will change it to something else. Either way poor Jonathan, I'm sure he has a nice... er... personality?

And speaking of looks and personalities. I wish they would have included more of this guy- (Seongjin Cheon) in the main story. So hopefully we see more of him in future chapters.

Also, I'm loving the fact that everyone about sh*t themselves when they realized Ben Park was there. While Phillip was completely chill. And then the shocked expressions on everyone's face in the room (excluding Gray) when Wolf shows up, only for Phillip to be like yo what's up? You're late. 🤣

Capt. John Price - Is startled to the point he drops his cigar. Oops. He's a little sheepish about it but it feels good knowing the old man's still got it.

Alejandro - To your surprise, he hits you with that stare. Yeah, that stare. You know, the one where he's gonna give you something you can feel later on that night. Have you walking from side to side the next day *in my Ariana voice*.

Rudy - Actually jumped when you first did it. Tries to crack a joke to take away from the fact that he was caught off guard but all it did was make you laugh harder at him. No, his cheeks aren't red, what the hell are you talking about?

König - König.exe stops working.

Horangi - Does it back. Two can play this game. Caresses your ass; makes love to it with his hand. Leaves you horny and angry after he walks off all triumphant and shit.

Graves - "I've always been blessed, darlin'." This is accompanied by the most sleaziest grin you ever saw. Smug bastard.

Alejandro, 6’2: is tall, acts tall without thinking (will not abuse his power). “Short people are people too”. Acts like Rudy is taller than him (would die if he actually was)

Roach, 5’8: is short, acts short, watch your shins (and your heels). Would rather do parkour than ask someone for help to get something off the top shelf (has ripped cabinet doors off the hinges)

Ghost, 6’4: is tall, acts tall naturally (will use his tallness against all those below 6’0). Will make short jokes when he feels the need (has gotten bitten by Roach over this)

Price, 6’2 1/2: is tall, acts tall (mostly as an intimidation tactic), switches off the tall act when not on a mission or working (will not abuse his power)

Gaz, 5’11: One inch too short to be tall (according to Ghost). Acts both short and tall (depends on the day/situation). Best of both worlds. Has never abused his power and never will (if Soap was significantly shorter than him he would)

Soap, 5’10: is short (according to Gaz because of Ghost’s bullshit), acts short and tall given the day or situation. Would 100% abuse his power if he was tall

König, 6’10: is tall, acts short without thinking (is used trying to seem smaller than what he actually is). Never has abused his tallness (but he will if he feels the need). Made one short joke (instant regret because it was targeted at Rudy (he survived))

Horangi, 6'2: is tall, acts tall (a conscious decision 80% of the time). Has abused his power but only on people who deserve it (Graves). Makes tall jokes (99.9% are targeted at König)

Farah, 5’3: is short, acts tall when working (naturally). Is not above asking for assistance but will climb the shelves at the grocery store. Very good at climbing (has broken zero cabinet doors)

Alex, 6’1: is tall, acts tall (naturally). Overly eager to help shorter people get things (has been attacked by a feral Roach). Hasn’t abused his power and never will (he’s a good man)

Laswell, 5’8: is short, acts tall (intentional intimidation tactic). Unfazed by short jokes, will ask for assistance, part monkey (is the only person spared by Ghost’s abuse)

Graves, 5’9: is short, actively acts tall whenever he can (insecure). Will get mad at short jokes but plays it off with a smile but you know he’s mad (sensitive)

Nik, 6’3 1/2: is tall, acts tall (chill). “Short people are people too (except Graves)”. Targets Graves (affectionate). Uses short jokes only on tall people (psychological damage + intimidation tactic)

Valeria, 5’6: is short, acts tall (intentional). Makes tall jokes at short people and short jokes at tall people (psychological damage). Will climb for things (and will stab if someone offers help)

Weak Hero: Eps 264-265 Reaction

During Baekjin (Donald)'s funeral, everyone in the Union was devastated. But the most devastated was Seokhyeon (Kingsley), who found it hard to accept that he really had to prepare the funeral (oh my god how unfair this world was to these kids).

Whereas Dongha was in tears, while Seongmok, Sehan (Forrest) and Jongyeon (Jack) were too stunned to process the tragedy, Hakho (Jake)'s kindness shone the most during the funeral. In a quick understanding of the human vulnerabilities of the once-omniscient Baekjin and the immovable Seokhyeon, he managed to support Seokhyeon like a friend (and no longer just a fellow executive of the Union) would.

In the meantime, Jihoon (Jimmy) was coping with his belated realization that, true to his name, all he had ever wanted was to be acknowledged by someone as strong as Baekjin (Jihoon's name means "The Will for A Merit/Recognition").

To every Union members's surprise and indignation, Humin (Ben) showed up at the funeral, against his friends' advice. Always being genuine and generous (this is also true to the part of his name that means "genuinely generous") , he was paying respects even to his bitterest enemies.

Being perceptive of the role that Sieun (Gray), and Humin & co.'s in trying to get help for Baekjin that night, Hakho later talked to Humin outside the charnel house. He even asked Humin how Sieun fared, and unfortunately he hadn't showed up to school, and so hadn't Juntae, according to a flashback to Taeoh (Teddy), Juyang (Rowan), Gayool (Gerard) as they talked at school. (WHAT...)

From a hill behind the charnel house, we saw Hwangho and Seongje (Wolf), paying their last respects, or rather, saying a badass goodbye, to Baekjin.

Elsewhere in the city, Sieun woke up and washed his face. But his own reflection taunted him, calling him the seed of all misfortunes since he had caused Juntae, Suho (Stephen) and even Baekjin so much unhappiness. (YOU'RE NOT THE SEED OF MISFORTUNE. YOU NEVER WERE, SIEUN. THIS IS ONLY YOUR OWN DEPRESSION TALKING!)

Sieun couldn't forget Baekjin's last distraught face and words, as he was standing alone and wounded on that road before the tragedy happened. All that Sieun wanted was for the memories to stop but they wouldn't. He tossed and turned in his sleep, beset by the nightmares.

Meanwhile, to Jihoon's frustration, there were already talks from Seokhyeon that the remaining finances of the Union would be evenly distributed, meaning that no further activities would be made in the name of the Union. He understood however, that everyone was still in shock, although he wondered why "that bastard" Hakho spent so much time with Seokhyeon.

Hakho told Seokhyon straightforwardly that it was Baekjin's last wish to dissolve the Union, but to Seokhyeon, it was only right to respect Baekjin by maintaining the Union and only temporarily halting its activities. He refused to accept that this was where Baekjin ended up. (Learn to let go, kid, it's not good for your health).

It wasn't just the Union members' moods that was somber. It turns out that Humin, Hyuntak (Alex/Gogo) and Pilyoung (Phillip) went to the funeral, too.

Hyuntak and Pilyoung didn't go into the funeral house because Hyuntak was only worried about Humin, while Pilyoung was too overwhelmed by his own emotions.

The other Eunjang kids were gloomy too, especially class 1-5 whose two students still hadn't returned to school. Juntae had regained his consciousness (YESSS) but Sieun went off radar completely. So Humin decided to come to Sieun's house after visiting Juntae at the hospital, and the others agreed. (The fact that only Gayool knew Sieun's address broke my heart, Sieun had never really opened up to his new friends. And Humin, you're such a precious human being).

Hyoman (Colton) & co. found Pilyoung, and thought that he looked cooler than Humin, standing alone. But Pilyoung was actually privately grieving Baekjin's death and worrying about Sieun, as he realized that what he was missing was not the Union itself but the sense of companionship. Only Hyuntak knew about this as he found Pilyoung crying in a Dorim street alley the other day. (My goodness I love these small details. ALSO PILYOUNG YOU DECENT KID YOU).

Somewhere far at Donghae Beach Rest Area, a Byeoksan Middle alumni (EDIT: Jihwan a.k.a Jeremy. Also, REMEMBER that he went to Suho and Sieun's middle school) spotted someone that he thought he knew...

WHO WAS IT? Was it Suho? Oh my god.

I have a lot of Echolalia (repeating noises or words you hear) too, so same. I added Horangi too, cuz I love that guy and there isn’t anything about him in the x reader tags.

John Price

Price honestly finds it endearing, he thinks its cute that you repeat things he says, especially if you weren’t British and were to copy his accent. I could imagine him growing so used to it he doesn’t even realize you do it anymore.

He wouldn’t be annoyed by it either as its just part of who you are, and he’s just happy you feel safe letting yourself verbally stim around him. He also finds its fun to know what media you’ve been watching, or if you’ve been paying attention to what he’s said.

Kyle “Gaz” Garrick

Gaz would just find it quirky, he might even find it charming in a way. He knows its not something where you choose who or what you repeat, but he still likes that its him you repeat stuff from.

You both end up walking around and repeating the same things, you because you repeat stuff because that’s just how you are, and Gaz because he’s been around you long along to start to develop the same habit, but only when it comes to you.

Simon “Ghost” Riley

He is also autistic, but where you copy noises or words, he’s the silent staring kind. He doesn’t speak a lot as we know, so he’s a little surprised the first time you repeat what he says, especially when you don’t even seem to realize you’re doing it.

Ghost ends up developing Echolalia as well, but only copies stuff you say or things like animal noises, and only when it’s the two of you alone together as he masks around other people.

John “Soap” MacTavish

Soap loves it when you copy or repeat stuff he says or noises he makes, it finds it cute and special as its something just so you, at least in your group. He would never look down on you for it either, as its not something you can really control.

He has tried to make you repeat the dumbest stuff and there’s no stopping him, and if he succeeds, he just starts snickering. Soap laughing is what makes you realize you must have said something funny, which only makes him laugh even more.

Alejandro Vargas

Alejandro starts calling you bird or parrot as a nickname, especially if you are the type to copy animal noises. He finds it funny when you mimic Spanish words if you aren’t a native Spanish speaker.

He’s honestly impressed with how well you can say stuff in Spanish if it isn’t a language you speak. It just becomes a thing he finds comfort in, since it means your there, alive, and well. So if you were to go quiet for longer periods of time, he might worry a bit.

Rodolfo “Rudy” Parra

Rudy doesn’t speak as much as everyone else, so he finds it a little endearing that you repeat the stuff he says as it means you were at least subconsciously paying attention to him and what he said.

I could imagine Rudy liking to just sit together in mostly silence, so when he does speak there’s pretty much a 100% chance you’ll mimic whatever he said, which he finds nice as it helps him feel some kind of normalcy, since you are there with him.

Phillip Graves

He would think you were mocking him in the beginning, until he realizes it’s something you do with everybody and you might not even realize you are doing it unless someone points it out. He never says anything about it, since its just part of who you are.

Graves will rip someone a new asshole if they were rude to you about it though, he may be an ass to most people, but you are one of his so he watches out for you. He doesn’t show it but he cares, in his own way.

König

König doesn’t speak a whole lot outside of missions, so you’d most likely copy him during missions or similar. This ends up with you two repeating copy over and over, over the comms. It becomes almost a little game, which helps put you both at ease during stressful times.

If you copy his German hed find is sweet, as it helps him feel a little more at ease since he’s most likely far away from his home country. So even if you don’t speak German, it helps him come out of his shell a little.

Kim "Horangi" Hong-Jin

Horangi would think you were making fun or him or mocking him, but seeing as you just do it as regularly as you do and don’t realize he doesn’t pick a fight like he might have, if anybody else did it.

He ends up growing to like that you do it, and he will throw hands with anyone who tries to make you uncomfortable about it or insults you for it. He starts speaking more Korean around you, just wanting you to repeat words in his mother tongue even if you don’t understand it.
