THE IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE

As I am going to work on immersive experience now might be a very good time to talk about my personal experience attending “Van Gogh 360 in India.

Firstly let me talk about Van Gough and his art work. Born 30 March, 1853 in Zundert, Netherlands, Van Gough became a professional post-impressionist painter and died in 29 July 1890.

"Vincent van Gogh, Self-Portrait, oil on board, 1887"

He became one of the most famous and influential figures in western art history. Not commercially successful in his career, he struggled with severe depression and poverty, which eventually led to his suicide at age thirty-seven.

His works include landscapes, still lifes, portraitsand self-portraits, His works are notable for their bold colors and impressive brushwork. He also contributed to the foundations of modern art.

"The Starry Night"

Now to Van Gogh 360, as we all ways say there 2 sides to the coin. There is good and bad here too. Firstly, the good bits I would praise the innovation and technology involved to make it all work and its ability to transport visitors into Van Gogh's world and bring his paintings to life in a new and exciting way however that said what’s interesting is the fact these projection companies don’t have to pay any royalties or copyright fee to use Van Gogh painting because his paintings are in public domain. Which is why it’s all over the place like pillow covers, towels, blankets…

When it came to the projection, I was underwhelmed with the pixelation, it felt cheap, and we were only set up for disappointment because rest of the video was lot worse in quality. Some of the video graphics was shockingly bad as if they got some default template from an iMovie software. Some of the animations were like super cheesy with some random animation.

It was like honoring a poet by turning his songs into alphabet soup. I mean, it seems that they have taken all the same letters and placed them in a soup bowl. It may seem like paying respect to a poet because the bowl also contains some of his words and music, but that bowl of gibberish is not an homage to him. If one could take any visual motifs, turn them into something related to classical music and quotes, and create something similar, we'd have something close.

All that said I do have one simple question is it right for others to meddle around with someone else’s painting without the permission from the artist who created. I do understand it’s in public domain but is it ethical?

Comparatives of taking others portrait as compared to a self portrait.

Others Portrait: Attempts to make the subject comfortable came in the form of encouragement and feedback. Each round started with a warning of the timer to prepare the subject.

Self: It took some time to get use to the camera, initial awkwardness was detected. However, it was much easier to capture the mood and light intended for the shot.
