Character Breakdowns

Realised I just posted my MMPR designs the other day and didn’t include any further information than that.

The goal of this series is to reimagine MMPR as an action comedy animated series in the vein of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, with splashes of drama in there to keep things interesting (hence the series title lmao)

Elements from several different sources are included (Show, Comics, Movies, etc.) with some extra new elements added that’ll be revealed as I get further into the design series and reveal more lore.

Anyway, under the cut are the basic rundowns of each main character, enjoy:

Jason Lee-Scott - 17, Junior Year, Red Ranger

- A young man of mixed Chinese and White descent, Jason is the quarterback of the Angel Grove High School Football team and a weekend karate teacher for Elementary Schoolers at the local Youth Centre. He is charming and charismatic, giving off an air that eases anyone he speaks with.

- Jason has been best friends with Zack since the two were small children, their parents having met and bonded over their shared experience as immigrants to the US when their families moved to the same cul de sac around the same time. He also went to Elementary School with Kimberly, however the two went to different Middle Schools and fell in with different crowds, however they are on friendly terms.

- Jason’s Ranger suit grants him enhanced strength he can use to lift many times more than his body weight and grapple with even the strongest monster thrown at him. However, he must be careful with this ability, as it can wear his energy down if he is not careful and render him helpless.

Zack Taylor - 17, Junior Year, Black Ranger

- Zack is an eccentric and energetic teenager with a passion for dance and performance, who also serves as fullback on the AGHS Football team. He developed his own fighting style he dubbed “Hip Hop Kido” from sitting in on Jason’s karate lessons, watching anime and seeing concerts growing up.

- Many would consider the young man the most approachable student at Angel Grove High, greeting almost everyone in the halls with a specific and personal secret handshake for each person. However, under his upbeat attitude lies deep concern and worry for those close to him. With his father gone, he usually spends his nights and any time off from school caring for his mother, who has been bedridden for several years due to illness. There is no one Zack loves more in the world than her, and he is not afraid to express it.

- Zack is fiercely protective of his friends, which manifests in his Ranger suit giving him extra plating and bulk, as well as the ability to create a forcefield when in danger. Creating a forcefield, while great for defense, does leave him vulnerable to attacks from behind. They can also be broken, with enough force.

Billy Cranston - 14, Freshman Year, Blue Ranger

- Considered by many to be a bit of an oddball, Billy Cranston is a boy who grew up homeschooled for most of his life, due to his parents not trusting the school system with their autistic son. However, with his parents having to work more and more to make ends meet, they were unable to continue teaching him from home and had to start him at Angel Grove High School for Freshman Year. Halfway in, he has not quite settled and mostly keeps to himself, preferring to tinker with his tools and contraptions he keeps in his large backpack.

- While tinkering, he has noticed that Trini Gomez has started to sit near him. Not too close, but close enough that he can hear the loud music playing from her headphones. Billy is also passing acquaintances with Jason and Zack, the latter of which making his week when the two came up with their personal handshake. Billy practiced it for several hours that same night, ending up sleeping in the next day and missing Shop Class, but he performed it flawlessly when prompted nonetheless. Perhaps Zack reminds him of his older brother, who moved out of town a few years prior. Nothing brings Billy more joy than hearing his brother is going to be visiting, even if it’s for just a day.

- Billy’s Ranger suit has a pack on the back, in which he can store tech to retrieve at a moment’s notice in a fight. He can also use it as a jetpack to gain higher ground or get out of a sticky situation.

Trini Gomez - 18, Junior Year, Yellow Ranger

- Trini has had a rough time of it. Her parents split when she was about to start Middle School, which ended up dropping her grades, forcing her to repeat a grade due to absences from looking out for her two little brothers in the midst of all of that. She spends the majority of her time at her mother’s place, who works late more often than not, leaving Trini to provide dinners for her brothers and make sure they get to bed on time. She prefers to keep to herself, with others at school more than happy to leave her be.

- She gravitates to sitting near anyone else who may be on their own, not ever really saying anything, just keeping close enough that she doesn’t feel completely isolated. Some people will get up and leave, however Billy Cranston hasn’t so far, and she does enjoy seeing whatever little thing he’s working on on any given day. Trini is most comfortable at her father’s place in Stone Canyon, where she’s able to pretend for just a weekend that she isn’t practically raising her brothers by herself. Her dad is also one of the few people she is out to, with her mother and brothers not yet knowing that she’s gay, and she’d like to keep it that way for the moment.

- Trini’s Ranger suit allows her to move at great speeds, however she must be careful to time her stops, as she can quickly lose control of her gathered momentum.

Kimberly Hart - 16, Sophmore Year, Pink Ranger

- Kimberly is the daughter of an artist and a successful LA businessman. As a result of her upbringing, she hadn’t really ever experienced anything but comfort and security in her life, meaning she can be a bit naive at times. However, she is much smarter than one might assume, with a ruthlessness to match if crossed or taken advantage of. While driven and passionate about her interests - particularly gymnastics - she can be superficial and a perfectionist, holding herself to a much higher standard than she may others. She is also kind of squeamish and doesn’t much like to get her hands dirty, but, if she must, she will suck it up and get the job done. She’s not one to leave anything unfinished.

- Despite her friendliness and sociable attitude, Kimberly doesn’t really have a set group of friends she spends her time with. If asked, chances are she will say that her Mother is her best friend, sharing anything and everything with her. She is on friendly terms with Jason - Zack too, by extension - and is... puzzled and intrigued by the new girl in the green jacket who just moved to Angel Grove from Reefside.

- Kimberly’s Pink Ranger suit has a hang-glider-like device stored on her back that she can utilize to glide short distances, and even as a weapon in certain situations.

First Fic: I'm Here - a 300 word ficlet about a rarepair that @blyedeeks and I came up with. I just ran with posting it and have been on ao3 ever since.

Last fic: currently posting a fic in probably favorite series that i've ever written - Breaks in Morning Light - which is fic five in my Matthew/Leon bdsm verse. It deals with chronic illness, communication and the hard work of a relationship. I really wanted to look at the way a relationship functions when absence is demanded and how those spaces remain empty or get filled. It's one of the longest fics I've written and I'm deeply proud of it.

Fic where I wrote for the fandom once: Let the Walls Break Down - a Girl Meets World Lucaya soulmate future fic. I love the concept of soulmarks that I created here and for a fic I often forget I wrote, it has a ton of reads

Favorite fic I wrote in the fandom that has the most works: Love in a Warzone which is my world war ii Stydia fic. It was the first big bang I ever participated in and I still think fondly about the experience and all the friends I made. Also love that I predicated Scott and Malia being a thing and got to put my history degree to good use.

Fic I wish more people read: The Devils Dance Outside My Doorstep aka my girl Jack Hughes fic. I love her here, her friendships and her relationship with Nico and Taylor. It's deeply personal to me as well and I wish it got more reads. Totally get why it doesn't but wish it did.

Fic I agonized over: anything in Scrawling It Forever but I remember agonizing over each word in chapter 2/3 of All This And Heaven Too. It was writing those chapters that I realized just how much of myself I was putting into the story and just how deep it was going to get.

Fic that sprang fully formed: Soaking in Promises But You Set It Alight aka my TK/NolPat demigod au that literally would not leave me alone during quarantine because I reread the entire PJO series. I wrote this in a fog but it has some of the funniest lines I've ever written

Work I'm proud of: In Tongues and Quiet Sighs - this fic was one that I wrote while I was dealing with the twin wrecking balls of long covid and burnout and as I got better, so did Leon. The character work that I did in this fic is something I'm very very proud of

I’m not Native, I haven’t watched Power Rangers in ages, and I’ve never read the comics, so someone who is ACTUALLY Native/indigenous should DEFINITELY make up their own opinion and we should listen to THAT person more than my late night ramblings and if someone had actually said or written something about it please please please point me into that direction because I do honestly want to know

The entire situation between Tommy Oliver being Indigenous is kind of Messed Up in a number of different ways for multiple reasons (JDF (Tommy´s actor) isn’t indigenous, his brother is not indigenous, he’s the Red Ranger at the time, I’m pretty sure there were a couple stereotypes involved, etc. etc.)

but I really do think it’s interesting and brings attention to the issue of the kids of indigenous people and people of color being adopted out to usually white families in order to divest them of their cultural heritage. Historically the US had been VERY interested in cultural genocide and what better way than by separating an orphan from his heritage? Idk I did my grade 12 English project on Native American Boarding Schools which were fucked to put it mildly. But like if Tommy, the younger brother was sent away to be adopted by a white family while the older brother David was kept on the reservation having been deemed “too old” or “too Native” it’s some fucked up shit and also probably a violation of the ICWA

They could probably use this for a sequel to the 2017 MMPR movie. What’s the point of being “dark” and “angsty” if we´re not also criticizing the government, colonization, and creating an identity crisis at the same time? Especially when people are looking to overturn indigenous nations authority over their own children

the portrayal is at least positive even if it’s really not respectful either way we can definitely do better idk just had some thoughts

Hello there, as someone who loves this movie, I decided to make a list of fics that’ve read, or am about to read, to anyone who is interested:

Note: I’m only putting here fics that I’ve read. So if someone knows a fic they might want to recommend, let me know! XD There are currently almost two thousand works on the power rangers 2017 tag on AO3, so be sure to look around and dig for stuff you might like.

MultiChapter fics (post-canon)

Rangers with Attitude by SmokeyCut : A sequel to the movie that is very in synch with the power rangers universe, both in how the story is told and how light it feels. THat doesn’t stop the drama from happening though. Awesome battle scenes and a very engaging take on Tommy, and the 2017 universe as a whole.

Power Rangers 2: Sythesis by SatanSpeaks (mature) : This fic is a piece, it’s another sequel to the movie, but with a much more bleak look on the universe as a well, however, it doesn’t dive too much into it and it has plenty of hopeful moments to spare. It’s a fic that leaves you on the edge of your seat, start to finish, biting your nails hoping everything will work out.

we gladiate but i guess we're really fighting ourselves by sunnydalehart: “The rangers don't really know what they're doing, but they really are trying their best.” -- Another post-canon fic with good romance, and team-bonding, check it out!!! (Trimberly) (Billy/ Jason/Zack)

Power Rangers 2: Rise of the Green Ranger by IzzyIniguez: Rita loses her coin, but finds a new power. The rangers learn to be a team and meet the Tommy and Tamsin Oliver, the new (twin) kids in town. Sparks fly and tempers flare between Kim and Tommy, and Trini and Tamsin. I think this might be one of the most original takes on 2017 Tommy Oliver out there.

Short-stories:

5 Times Jason Scott Was Protective of His Team by notawriters: Jason-centric goodness!!!!

Zack Taylor Designated Driver Squad by iwasnthere622 : Zack didn't have the best school record. His friends help him fix that. -- This isn’t as much a sequel fic as it is a Zack sequel fic, exploring his life after becoming a ranger, and how he relates to his new friends. The chapters go through his bond with each of the rangers, and it’s an amazing piece of Zack Taylor fanfic, enriching what we already saw in the movie. One of my all time favourites!!

Been There, Done That by TaikoTurtle: The team has a bonding camping trip up on the mountains, but after a series of unfortunate events, Kimberly has to figure out how to make things right, including her feelings.

One More Ride by magimumu: (NEW!) : Uber driver Trini picks up Kim on a rainy evening. (TRIMBERLY) (This short one is amazing! Like poetry! Can’t recommend enough!)

One-Shots:

***NEW!!!!! - (This is) Good Weird - by Laslus ----- Poly Rangers fic!!! - Or: The Huge Colective Denial of FeelingsThe first time Trini notices, they are around the fire. She looked at the whole picture, feeling the warmness she usually felt when hanging with them, how she finally felt like she belonged somewhere. She should focus on that, on the happiness she felt as they sang off tune, how they were a picture together. Oh.

All of the Above by songofsunset : This short one shot is a perfetc mood setting piece, with rangers hanging out. In a few senteces, it grasps both each ranger’s personallities and the nature of their both. Sweet fluffiness all around.

Just let me love you when your heart is tired by milkyegg_carton: A cure little fluff about the aftermath of the battle with Goldar!!

walk me home by twoorangecookies: A nice little, well, it’s canon complaint but it’s sort of a missing scene, but it’s also sort of an AU where Kim asks Trini to walk her home.

Campfire Dance-Off by Skyland2704: team bonding fluffiness!

we carry each other (we’re just different colors) by hearden: This is a fascinating fic, about the rangers before being rangers! Seriously! There are so many character beats, and a very good grasp on the characters!!

am i the only living soul around by younglegends: A story told backwards,going from the aftermath of the movie to the very beginning. Again, another rich story exploring the characters and their core! An awesome read about the power rangers that really makes a point about their evolution and their bond in face of their sttrugles. I always go back to this fic for inspiration.

Do Better by iwasnthere622: One of the best jason centtric fics out there, exploring his role as leader and the way he shoulders the burden.

Dildo Wars by cabooseachievables : I think this is one of the most fun pieces of fanwork I’ve ever read, seriously, just pure delight from start to finish as the rangers start a prank war between themselves.

**********NEW!!!!!!!!! Riding Shot Gun by zipzipnada: --Kimberly finds out her new friends have never tried weed before, and knows for a fact Jason is a shotgun king.

you’re my sunshine by titaniaeli: Short, fluff, and engaging, basically a tale of Jason falling in love with his team. (RANGER POLYCULE)

in a hopeless place by twoorangecookies: (AU) This is one of my favorite fics. It’s an Outsiders AU, and I never had contact with The Outsiders, but I do love how consistent the rangers are even in an Alternative universe. This fic is well paced, and leaves tense with each cliffhanger, not to mention the forbidden romance, which is just *cheff’s kiss. (TRIMBERLY)

The Heart part 1 by The Otter Limits: While this fic is a sequel to the movie, I’m putting it here, because its main focus is the relationship between Trini and Kimberly. I really love this fic because it has a very heavy dose of Angst. I’m not sure it’s everyone’s cup of tea, but I do love the melodrama involved. Also, there is some neat world building about the rangers’ powers and the universe they live in. (TRIMBERLY)

The Hunt For Love by magicmumu: Awesome Valentine’s day Fluff, what else can you wish for? Honestly, the dialog between the characters as they go on an scavenge hunt it’s so amazing, you can’t help reading this with a smile on your face. Can’t recomment enough. (TRIMBERLY)

Fire meet gasoline by twoorangecookies: (mature) A cute little soccer AU, with that good old rivals to lovers premise. What more can I say? Go check it out!! (TRIMBERLY)

Clarity by thebrightestbird: I think this was the first time I read about this ship, and interestingly it immediately spread to be fond of it in the tv show universe as well. Great stuff!!! (ZACK/JASON)

with my feelings on fire (guess I'm a bad liar) by movingforthesakeofmotion: The one where a date night turns into exposed secrets and discoveries. (TRIMBERLY, CRANSCOTT)

EXPLICIT FICS:

Turning sweet love into poison by twoorangecookies: (EXPLICIT) this fic is Intense, and I really advise you to look into the tags before going in. It deals with heavy subjects like body dysmorphia, so be mindful. Now that that’s out of the way, this fic is delicious to read, two traumatize characters navigating a complex situation, it has all those spices for those who love some heavy Angst in their romance. (TRIMBERLY)

Legacy of Power by Hearden (Mature, but the collection has Explicit fics): (INCOMPLETE) .This fic is interesting because it’s sort of a nice multiverse mix between the tv show and the movie, with the simple premisse of having TV Kimberly and Tommy meeting the 2017 rangers. It’s one amazing fic, very well written with an awesome premisse and solid character work. It’s specially awesome to see two versions of Kimberly knowing and interacting with one another.

*****NEW !!!! -- Shut up and Drive - by Twoorangecookies -- (Sort of a power rangers meet Fast and Furious, but R rated 😈) Trini is looking forward to start her new career as a rookie cop. She isn't the best at relationships, so she goes out one night just looking for a thrill. Then she stumbles on a scene that is not her scene at all and more thrill than she asked for, and she meets a woman that is the most annoying, obnoxious woman she's ever met. A woman she wouldn't go for in a million years. At least...that's what she thinks.

PS: I have to say, it’s really interesting to go through fandoms, not only to meet how diverse people’s interpretations can be, but how rich and creative they are as well. Just the ammount of Tommy Olivers I’ve seen for the 2017 universe is stagering, not one version is the same, and that, I think, is also very precious.

Anyway, remember to comment, reblog, and all that stuff that shows authors your apreciation. Feel free to add fics you might’ve read and are not here, I’ll sure try to do so as I find new ones. I tried to categorize stuff as best as I could.
