Erie in Springtime | 5.10.24
What is there to say about a place where the Warbler Chorus is punctuated by Oriole Arias? Birder’s Heaven? Because that perfectly describes the week in Erie… specifically at Presque Isle. And those Oriole’s? Well, I saw dozens of them… dozens. I have never seen so many Baltimore Oriole’s in my life! We were in Erie for The Great Migration… and let me tell you. It absolutely is great! And yes, I…

Field Course Update #20: More Beach!
Today we went back to Presque Isle for a little bit to visit some more of the woods back from the beach as well as the sand dunes and ridges formed there over time (pictures 1-3).
We then changed up some of our plans and went to Bluff’s State Park, (pictures 4-10) it is also a beachy area in Lake Eerie. I still cannot get over how big that lake is… I know it is called a great lake for a reason but still. Nature is absolutely crazy to me sometimes.
We saw some more metamorphic and igneous rocks amongst the vast sedimentary rocks and sand through the same Central Canadian glacial deposit (6th picture). There we also saw some really cool modern ripple structures (7th picture). The main structures we focused on today I feel were more geared toward geologic hazards (pictures 5,8, &9). Pictured here are areas that landslides have continuously been occurring. The ninth photo is from the perspective of nearly on top of this area- we climbed up the hill face. It was really tiring but super neat. This isn’t pictured but I found some fossilized shells too! :)
Today was really neat landscape wise and I think I understood the material better today. This area is super infested with ticks so I was slightly paranoid about that. It was fun to crawl through tens of dead trees on top of each-other and nearly falling off the side of the very muddy landslide/ hill face.
We met two new professors today and they were both very sweet. The one specifically I got to have a little more conversation with and he seems like a very nice guy! I am not sure at all what we are doing tomorrow but I am excited for it.
Not geology related but I think I am starting to make some really decent friends here and I really enjoy the people I am choosing to talk with. Some of us even went to get ice cream tonight which was super fun! I will definitely try to keep up with these posts more often again and I will try to be adding more detail as well!

That Steep Re-entry Curve | 5.8.23
The vacation was… interesting. There was a significant amount of rain and the beginning was very cold. However, I am very happy to report that my Handspun sweater and newly stitched sweatshirts were PERFECT in every way! One of us had plenty of things to occupy their time on a rainy day (or days)… reading, knitting, stitching… and one of us did not. So if you are reading between the lines here… I…

Field Course update #19: THE BEACH?
Today we went up to Lake Eerie to the beach! We went to Presque Isle State Park, it was pretty interesting because I had never gone even close to here before and was shocked. The lake is HUGE and has like its own whole beach? That was just so intriguing for me I had never seen something like this in PA before!
Most of the pictures are just of the beach, swampy areas just off of the beach, and the third picture has part of a sand dune pictured!
We got permission to dig a trench in the sand to look at the layers and lamination patterns through time (6th photo, I wish I could post a better picture here but I don’t want to include people from my class in the photos). We also saw some metamorphic and igneous rocks along the shore (next picture). I believe they were glacially deposited here from central Canada from the Arcadian shield. I’n not confident with the terminology used there, I am (pretty sure) that is how the professor explained it but I have bad ears and the waves were very loud lol. And the last picture is a structure used to help prevent erosion in this area. I am not sure about the spelling, but it is pronounced “JOIN.”
We have a new professor now and the way he describes things is sometimes way overwhelming and just completely over my head honestly. I have only taken one introduction class for geology and this is my second geology class I wish he could dumb it down a little sometimes lol.
Again, I am keeping these short for now but I will definitely come back and add to these or just make new posts. After this field course is over I plan to look through my field notebook and write more in detail about everything, make my own website, and maybe even a YouTube channel!
