Did you know .. ?

Stone Age tools unearthed near Preveli beach in 2009 indicate that human ancestors sailed the sea and reached Crete, at least 130.000 years ago.

Preveli Beach in Crete is located at the exit of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, crossed by the Great River (Megas Potamos)

On the river banks, many palm trees are found and this gives the landscape an exotic sensation.

A big fire in 2010 burnt most of the trees, however, surprisingly the palm grove has  already recovered most of its damage!

It is worth to mention that several handmade artifacts, probably from the Stone Age, were excavated at Preveli Gorge.

These indicate that an ancient Homo species (that could be Homo erectus) had used rafts or other seagoing vessels to cross from northern Africa to Europe, via some of the larger islands, as archaeologist Thomas Strasser states.
