「参考にならない私の経歴」神谷之康

学生時代の同級生に本をたくさん持っている友人がいて、よく本を借りて読んだ。本文を読んだ形跡はあまりないのだが、本の後ろにある著者の経歴欄には必ずマーカーで線が引かれていたのを覚えている。その友人のその後の消息は知らない。著者（≒著名人？）の経歴に関する情報はキャリア形成に役立ったのだろうか？

今思えば、私にとってそのような情報はほとんど参考にならなかった。「XXXX年に小学校に入学した子どもの半数以上は、大学卒業時に今は存在しない職業に就くだろう」とか「20年後、今ある職業の半分はなくなる」と言われるが、私の現在の研究分野も、20年前私が研究を始めた頃には存在しなかったし、大学に「特任助教」なんて職業も存在しなかった。

と学生さんの今後のキャリアの参考にならないことを断った上で、自己紹介を兼ねて、これまでの経歴について少し紹介したい。

　

1970年、奈良県桜井市に生まれた。父は銀行員で、母は結婚まで同じ銀行で働いていた。母は、物理学者になりたいから大学に行かせてほしいと親に頼んだそうだが、「奈良女子大の家政学部以外はダメ」と言われ、泣く泣く地元の銀行に就職した。高校では、京大数学科を出たばかりで心理学者になる前の河合隼雄先生に数学を教わっていたそうだ。数学の成績が良かったので目をかけられていたと本人は言っている。

幼少期の記憶はなぜか鮮明で、幼稚園ではいじめられ、家では常に兄からバカにされているような視線を感じていて、今風に言うと自己肯定感がとても低かった。６才の頃から、「柱時計の振り子は自分が見ていない間も本当に動いているのか？」とか「他人も自分と同じように心を持っているのか」など考えるようになる。軽いうつ状態だったと思われるが、このときの悩みや疑問が現在の職業につながる。

小学校では幾分快活になる。私立中学を受験するが失敗。試験に落ちたことよりも、その後進学した地元公立中学での罰ゲームのような中学生活がつらかった。当時はヤンキー全盛期で、学校のトイレの鏡や便器は割れ、音楽室のピアノやオルガンの鍵盤は剥がされていた。授業中に上級生が乱入しないように、廊下側の窓や扉を針金で固定して授業を行った。生徒会長選挙では学校一のワルが当選した。そのときはじめて民主主義に疑問をもった。

からまれないよう細心の注意を払いながら中学に通う。部活では、バスケットボール部に所属し主将を務めた。主将とは名ばかりで、今思えばリーダーとして何もしていなかった。校内暴力の嵐は徐々に収まっていったが、今度は暴力教師が力をふるうようになった。

高校は京都の洛南高校に進学する。これは同校のバスケ部だった兄の影響や当時のコーチからの誘いがあったからで、進学校だという理由で選んだわけではなかった。だが結局、腰を痛めたことや「勉強クラス」の特待生にされたことなどの理由でバスケを断念した。正直なところ、バスケにさほど情熱をもっていなかったし、怒鳴られたり殴られたりしながらスポーツをするのはもううんざりだった。

写真では伝わりにくいと思うが、現在の私の身長は190cmで、高校入学時でも185cmあった。今でも5年に1度くらい「（元）プロ野球選手ですか？」と知らない人に話しかけられることがある。地元の中学の同級生に会うと「なんでプロレスラーにならへんかったんや？」と言われる。男たるもの、体が大きかったらプロレスラーを目指すべきだ、ということらしい。

高校の数学や理科を通して自然科学に強い興味をもっていたが、身近にロールモデルがおらず「理系の人生」が上手くイメージできなかったこともあり、大学は当初文系に進学した。もう一つ、80年台に流行したポストモダン思想に触れたことで、よく知りもしないのに科学の普遍性に疑問を抱くようになったことが影響している。ここで人生の道を大きく踏み外した。大学では普通に物理か電気工学を専攻していればよかったと後悔している

今まで京都大学とは不思議と縁がない研究者人生を歩んできたが、実は、高校卒業時、京大経済学部を受験して合格している。入試制度が大きく変わる時期で、京大と東大を同じ年に受験することができた。京大・東大の試験の後、京大の合格発表があり、東大の合格発表の前に、京大の入学手続きをしなければならなかった。京大を「蹴ら」ないと東大に入れないが、京大を蹴ってしまうと東大に不合格になっても京大には入れてもらえない。当時なぜそんな自信があったのかわからないが、京大の経済学部の入学手続きはせずに東大の合格発表を待ち、無事合格した。

高校の教師から「体が大きいから外交官に向いている」という真偽不明のアドバイスを受けたこともあるが、実際には特別な理由や目標もなく、東京大学の文科Ⅰ類（法学部進学コース）に進学した。が、法学の授業で電気窃盗の議論（物体でない電気を盗むことは窃盗罪になるか？）を聞かされ、道を誤ったことを悟る。結局、法学部には進学せず、教養学部教養学科という何をやっていても許される学科に進んだ。

子供の頃から意識や脳の問題に興味があった。しかし、自然科学の方法で研究するのは難しく、哲学や人文科学の研究対象であると思っていた。だが大学に入って、認知科学や人工知能、ニューラルネットワークなど、心と脳の問題を自然科学や工学の構成論的アプローチで研究する分野があることを知る。はじめは、科学哲学、主に数理論理学を勉強していたが、その後、認知科学や���経科学に関心が移る。

今「人工知能」がブームだが、その実態は「第3次ニューラルネットワークブーム」である。私が大学に入った頃が「第2次ニューラルネットワークブーム」で、専門書が一般書店で平積みになるほどの盛り上がりであった。当時「人工知能」は、論理的なプログラミングをベースにした方法を指す言葉で、脳を模した仕組みでデータから規則を学習するニューラルネットワークとはむしろ対立する概念であった。

当時の指導教官の異動に伴い、大学院博士課程の途中から、カリフォルニア工科大学に移った。当初編入できるという話だったのだが、結局認められず、一般入試を受けて一から大学院をやり直すことになった。私が所属したのは、“Computation and Neural Systems”という、生物学、電気工学、コンピュターサイエンスが融合した学際プログラムである。そこで計算神経科学を本格的に勉強し、神経細胞のシミュレーションと心理実験を無理やりつなげた論文で博士号を取得した。

カリフォルニア工科大学にいた90年台後半は、クリントン政権下で景気もよく、研究予算も比較的潤沢であった。大学院生は少なかったものの、バイオ系を中心に多くの日本人が米国でポスドクとして研究していた。また、MBA取得のために留学する日本人も多かった。当時の米国留学やMBAには、まだ将来を約束するようなキラキライメージがあった。今はもうちょっと悲壮なイメージが加わっているのではないだろうか。

学位取得後、ハーバード大学とプリンストン大学で研究を続け、計７年間米国に滞在した。2001年には、9・11テロが起こった。ボストン発ロサンゼルス行きのボーイング767がニューヨーク世界貿易センタービルに突入したが、その前日に同じ航空会社の逆向きの便でロサンゼルスからボストンに引っ越してきたばかりだった。

2004年にジョージ・W・ブッシュが再選され、米国生活がいやになってきた頃に、ATR脳情報研究所の川人光男所長から声をかけられ帰国することにした。ATRは、京都府南端のけいはんな学研都市にあり、奈良にも近い。巡り巡って地元企業（ATRは株式会社）に就職したことになる。ヒラ研究員ながら、ポスドクと秘書の予算をつけてもらい、恵まれた環境で自分のグループを立ち上げることができた。奈良先端大の客員教員として優秀な学生を受け入れ、プリンストン大学滞在中に始めた「ブレイン・デコーディング」の研究を発展させることができた。

米国滞在中は毎年のように日本から遊びに来ていた両親も老い、2010年には父が他界した。母は、最近受けた大動脈瘤の手術の合併症で、意識が戻らない状態が続いている。介護のまね事のようなこともやった。良いタイミングで帰国できたなと思う。

帰国してから10年が経ち、今年縁あって京大に採用され、新しい研究室を立ち上げている。

以上が私の「参考にならない経歴」である。それでも、同世代の海外の研究者には、哲学から脳研究に転じたり、似たような経歴を持つ人がいて面白い。同時代を生きていると、似たパターンに収束することがあるのだろう。でもやはり「現在は存在しない20年後のキャリア」のロールモデルは存在しない。生まれ落ちた時代と環境の中で、自分で選び取っていくしかない。
