3,183 views Oct 13, 2021 People who never considered themselves at risk from climate change are waking up to floods and fires. From June 2021 to August 2021, 1 in 3 Americans experienced a weather disaster. Preparing for the next one may be the thing that saves your life and maybe even some of your things. "Unfortunately, greenwashing seems to be a trend that’s here to stay. Companies are constantly coming up with new and brilliant ways to tell us lies. One of the best things people can do to protect themselves from these corporate cons is to get familiar with recent greenwashing examples. Awareness of the tricks they use can help you spot other talented greenwashers more easily, so let’s take a look at some greenwashing lowlights from the last couple of years.
Innocent: insincere TV adverts
Keurig: misleading recycling claims
Ikea: accredited illegal logging
Windex: misleading plastic packing claims
H&M: insincere sustainable fashion claims
Hefty: false representation of the product
Ryanair: false low-emissions claims
Quorn: unverifiable carbon-footprint claims
Shell: gaslighting of the general public
Unilever: unclear environmental claims
HSBC: misleading climate ads"

"This warming has driven widespread and rapid global changes, including sea level rise and climate extremes — resulting in widespread harm to lives, livelihoods and natural systems.
It’s increasingly clear that vulnerable people in developing countries — who have generally contributed little to greenhouse gas emissions — are often disproportionately affected by climate change.
Intergenerational inequities are also likely. A child born now is likely to suffer, on average, several times as many climate extreme events in their lifetime as their grandparents did."

Fossil fuel-linked groups spent around $4 million on Facebook and Instagram ads that spread false climate claims over the COP27 summit, a new report says.
The physical presence of more than 600 fossil fuel lobbyists overshadowed the November conference in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, as world leaders, NGOs and activists gathered in a bid to accelerate global efforts to confront the climate crisis.
Analysis out today shows oil and gas interests were also busy online. Climate Action Against Disinformation (CAAD) – the coalition behind the second “Deny, Deceive, Delay” report – has documented how PR companies, front groups and oil majors were actively spreading disinformation in the weeks leading up to and during the summit.
Researchers with the coalition’s COP27 Intelligence Unit identified over 3,700 ads sharing false claims on Facebook and Instagram, platforms owned by Meta. They also found a rise in content related to outright climate-science denial by ‘anti-woke’ pundits on Twitter, who pushed #ClimateScam and lines such as ‘climate is a hoax’." DeSmog

The case was brought by thousands of older Swiss women, and lawyers say it could set a global precedent."

"The data, shared exclusively with the Guardian, provides the first, albeit conservative estimate of the carbon cost of the current conflict in Gaza, which is causing unprecedented human suffering, infrastructure damage and environmental catastrophe.
It comes amid growing calls for greater accountability of military greenhouse gas emissions, which play an outsize role in the climate crisis but are largely kept secret and unaccounted for in the annual UN negotiations on climate action.
“This study is only a snapshot of the larger military boot print of war … a partial picture of the massive carbon emissions and wider toxic pollutants that will remain long after the fighting is over,” said Benjamin Neimark, a senior lecturer at Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL), and co-author of the research published on Tuesday on Social Science Research Network."

"David Boyd, the UN special rapporteur for human rights and the environment, said: “This research helps us understand the immense magnitude of military emissions—from preparing for war, carrying out war and rebuilding after war. Armed conflict pushes humanity even closer to the precipice of climate catastrophe, and is an idiotic way to spend our shrinking carbon budget.”
Climate consequences including sea level rise, drought and extreme heat were already threatening water supplies and food security in Palestine. The environmental situation in Gaza is now catastrophic, as much of the farmland, energy and water infrastructure has been destroyed or polluted, with devastating health implications probably for decades to come, experts have warned. Between 36 percent and 45 percent of Gaza’s buildings—homes, schools, mosques, hospitals, shops—have so far been destroyed or damaged, and construction is a major driver of global heating."

"The agriculture sector has spent millions of dollars on discrediting plant-based diets, a new report has claimed.
The report, published by the consumer advocacy organisation Freedom Food Alliance on Thursday (29 February), found that multinational meat companies and lobby groups were using industry-funded research, public ad campaigns and educational materials to sway public opinion on meat and dairy.
The Disinformation Report: Harvesting Denial, Distractions & Deception suggests that the industry is sidestepping accountability for its role in greenhouse emissions. By denying, derailing, delaying, and deflecting meaningful discussions around the sector’s key issues, the agriculture industry is using the same tactics as the tobacco and fossil fuel lobbies. "

"As the science connecting climate change to more frequent and severe weather events becomes clearer, there is mounting evidence that members of the fossil fuel industry coordinated to downplay that link — evidence that could be valuable to lawsuits seeking accountability."

"Transport is one of Australia’s fastest growing sources of climate pollution with cars, vans and utes making up almost two-thirds of transport emissions in Australia. Car manufacturers have a crucial role to play in offering a range of lower and zero emissions vehicles which are cheaper and cleaner to run.
That’s not happening right now in Australia. Climate Council has examined 2023 Australian car sales and identified five filthy car companies whose fleets are estimated to be responsible for as much domestic climate pollution as some of Australia’s biggest coal mines. The Filthy Five are Toyota, Ford, Hyundai, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi and Mazda. It’s no coincidence that these brands are also some of the loudest opponents of Australia’s proposed New Vehicle Efficiency Standard."

"The academic who blew the whistle on Australia's carbon credit scheme - sparking an independent review - has released new research  showing "damning results". Professor Andrew Macintosh says the research confirms the scheme isn't removing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Human-induced regeneration counts for almost a third of all carbon credit projects but Professor Macintosh says it's "failing", despite receiving hundreds of millions of dollars in credits."
